I am going to a catered dinner for  the library volunteers tonight at the library.

Molly

I hadn't realized that I'd not posted in such a long time!  My bad!  I've been trying to deal with some of the issues which we experienced while Mohamed was here for a brief visit between his teaching duties in Egypt.  First was a couple of days of heavy rain which brought on lots of water in our basement.  Mohamed bought some cement-like products and after the rain had dried, he spread the products around the floor.  That worked briefly, but the basement flooded again, so we called a professional team.  They did the same thing with a different product, but the second rainstorm came and BOOM - more water in the basement.  They we called our City of Concord fellows, who came out to the house, spend about 2 hours cleaning out the drain at the street as well as checking the street as far away as the entire Block.  I thought that would work, but a couple of days ago, another rainstorm and another flooded basement - not as intense as previously, but still WATER IN THE BASEMENT.  Not the way we expected to spend his "down time" while he was here.

We've also had a couple of HUGE rain storms recently, which brought down a huge old Oak tree in a small empty lot across the street.  Thanks God it did not hit the houses on either side, but it sure was messy.  Our Emergency City guys came back to split it into pieces with their Emergency equipment and it is still laying in pieces on the grass.  Wonder when they will come to pick up the downed pieces?

Mohamed just called - it's about 2 a.m. where he is in Egypt.  He's been watching the international news RE all the chatter about Hillary and her supporters, as he did earlier about THE DONALD and his team - and his wife and other supporters.

He asked me a question about REALLY PAINFUL toes, which he has experienced.  I wondered if any Friends here have had the same pain in their feet?  His doctor gave him some Meds before he returned to Egypt and he has checked with his local Dr. there, but
still continues to have the pains.  I've not had the pain in my feet, but sure have recently experienced INTENSE pains up and down the outside of my thighs.

I'm happy to have the chance this evening to catch up on news among friends here and wish everyone a blessed evening and Happy Week.  Do something really special for yourselves!!

Good morning to all.  We are expecting a full week ahead, starting today, of a rather dreadful heat wave.  I thank heavens for the lovely breezes off of the bay, and plan to just make a quiet week at home of it.

Molly, I am so sorry about your flooding basement.  No expert I, however; so I have no words of wisdom.  Call in the experts is my mantra when ANYthing goes wrong.  I am sorry it spoiled Mohamed's visit.  Sounds like he needs to see a doctor and have some tests regarding his toes.  Gout? Type 2 Diabetes? Neuropathy?  Takes blood tests and stuff to diagnose.  I do hope it will not prove to be anything serious.

Well, Our Rebecca flew out of here and landed safely back in Kansas City by a hair, as it were!  She JUST missed being part of the huge computer glitch that grounded Southwest yesterday.  Becky misses us already, but is happy to be home with her husband Sam and their 3 Bichons.  She will catch up with my granddaughter Jenny and her 4 children, Emily, Sam, Simon and Max, today.  They are experiencing a heat wave, as well, but lack the relief from bay breezes.

Keep cool, everyone!

jane

Molly...MaryPage gave excellent advice on the toe pains...and blood tests can tell if it's gout or arthritis.

I have them recently in my big toes, and I suspect arthritis as I have it in most of my joints, it seems.

Bloody awful heat wave here, too, but we need to make a CR trip so Ray can stock up on fish for the weekend.  We'll leave as soon as he gets home from coffee with the fellows, and hope to be back by early afternoon.

Stay cool and safe, Buddies!!

Molly

Many thanks for the suggestions RE how Mohamed should follow up RE his painful toes.  He did have an appointment with an excellent Dr. in Maryland before he returned to Egypt and was given prescriptions for
several meds.  He brought those prescriptions back here with him and visited our local Harris Teeter pharmacist and got the meds to take with him to Egypt.  He uses them daily and learned that there also is a pharmacy near his apartment there that also has some of the same meds, so he can obtain refills also. I also cautioned him about wearing REALLY comfortable shoes as much as possible.  As he is in the University classroom several hours a day and plays with his Cousin's kids when he visits the family in Giza, he does walk around a lot.  He also has a good Dr. in Egypt, whom he has known for many, many years.

I listened to the NEWS last night and learned that we are going to experience temps in the 100 degrees for the next few days.  Sure glad I had our AC unit already checked for this time of the Season.

Hope all have a great day and are ready for a pleasant weekend.  Stay Cool!

maryz

Molly, always good to hear from you.  I hope Mohamed gets some relief for his foot problems - when the feet hurt, the whole body hurts. (Ouch!)  Also, I hope your basement is finally drying out.  You'd think the heat would help, but the humidity is also so high, it can't do much good.  Home ownership is always something, isn't it.

MaryPage, glad you're getting some good breezes.  And it's good we can always find things to do inside.  So here we are on our computers.  LOL

jane, I assume Ray's skin graft is continuing to heal properly.

I guess the heat is getting everybody - Oregon, Texas, Indiana, Iowa, OH, SC, MD, and TN.  We haven't heard from Sue, but I know AL is getting it, too.  Has anybody heard anything from or about Sue.  I sent her a note the other day.  I was awake most of Tuesday night (for no apparent reason), but I got a short nap yesterday, and was early to bed last night. And that was a good night's sleep.  I've always been a good sleeper, so I really hate this sleep irregularity.  Guess we always have to have something to complain about.  LOL

Hugs, and stay cool!

There is a front page story in this mornings local paper (The CAPITAL, Annapolis, Maryland) to the effect that one of the people on Hillary Clinton’s short list for VP is an Academy grad.  I had not known this, but he sounds great, if you want to google the article.
Retired four-star Admiral James George Stavridis, class of 1976.
The article likes him a LOT. He served 4 YEARS as Supreme Allied Commander of NATO, among other prestigious assignments.
I'm not trying to be political here;  just sharing some local bragging on one of our one time middies.  I thought seeing as how I hadn't a clue he was on the list, plus not a clue as to who he is, most likely you hadn't either!  He is not a politician, nor has he ever been in politics.

Just dropping in to say hello as I just  got registered (third try is a charm?)

Molly, its good to see you are still here and hope Mohomed's foot problems are rightly diagnosed and he soon finds relief.  What a mess it is to have a flood anywhere in your house.  Last one we had started in the kitchen on the first floor and it traveled to our finished basement.  Took days of big fans blowing to get it dry enough to remove and replace the kitchen floor.  We had to replace the bed in the bedroom plus many ceiling tiles and then replace the dried carpeting.  Thank God for home insurance.  Water just goes wherever it wants to go!
So MaryZ and everyone in the path of the heat wave.  I see my state of Ohio is included.  Yuck!  I begin to feel trapped after one day in my house.  Last night, I sat out on our screened porch and read a whole book (only 150 pages) which we are discussing on SL for 2 weeks.  If you are interested, the book is entitled "Our Souls At Night" by Kent Haruf and its pretty thought provoking and unusual.

Anyway, it was only 87 degrees and that felt pretty cool. And the sun was gone which
helped!

MaryPage, the article is interesting and its nice to know he isn't a politician. We could use more of those kinds of people in Congress.
.

Hi Annie - welcome.  Come back often.
"When someone you love dies, you never quite get over it.  You just learn how to go on without them. But always keep them safely tucked in your heart."

jane

Hi, Annie!  Good to see you here.

Molly....do you have a dehumidifier in your basement?  We have a lot of humidity here in Iowa, so have one that runs a lot in the summer to keep our basement dry.  It has a hose to the big washsink in he basement so we don't have to go down and empty the bucket.  You can buy them at WalMart, etc.

The heat has hit us here.  We made a quick trip to CR today to get Ray fish for the weekend, and it's good to be home and inside the AC.

I haven't heard a word on our Sue, so I may try to contact Kris again and see if I can get an update.

Everybody seems to be going to be hit by this high heat.

Stay cool and safe, everyBuddie!!

Hi Gals, I just got back from the grocery. Today has been a bad pain day, so took the motorized cart to shop. It's a blessing when you have to use it.  I had taken a tramadol before I left, but it never did kick in.  I also went to the library and stocked up with some more books.  I'm on the last one of the 8 I bought 10 days or so ago.  I have taped and watched the mosst important speeches of the convention. I enjoyed hearing Mike Pence last night. He seems like an intelligent man and very down to earth. A good Hoosier! :)  I'm also impressed with the 2 Trump sons. I missed the daughter's speech but I think Ivanka is talking tonight before her father. I am anxious to hear him give a serious, prepared speech and see if there is any decent content and solutions in it.

Molly, I was going to give you the same advice MP did for Mohammed. Glad he has a good dr. there.  If you have pain running down the outside of your thigh, it sounds like sciatica.  Prednisone and physical therapy are the only answers for that.  Sorry about your basement. Do you think a sump pump would help?  Also, painting the walls with a water-proof sealer might help. It all depends on the source of your problem.  We have had some real severe storms lately, haven't we?!

Jane, glad you had good cards and a good dr's run.

Mary Page, you all looked like you were having a ball at your happy hour outing!  It's so fun to be with adult children.

Hi Annie, welcome to our group. Are you a BC survivor also?

Mary, I haven't heard a word from Sue. I wrote her a note over a week ago and asked that she contact one of us, but so far nothing.

Jeanne, we have to pay a vehicle tax in SC, so we get that notice and when it's paid, they send us our stickers.  Illinois' system sounds ridiculous.  Good letter.  We don't get a notice about our driver's license though.

Hi Darlene. Think we are all primarily staying in and reading!

Sharon

jane

Buddies....email on the way from me about our Sue. If I missed you somehow, let me know and I'll resend.

jane

MaryPage

Sharon, Prednisone and physical therapy are the first things they tried in order to deal with my Sciatica.  They did not do a thing for me.  Then they did those 3 needle procedures, where I had to report to a surgical center each time and have nerve blocks done.  Those were each an extremely temporary partial help.  THEN they did the big surgery, where I was in hospital for 2 days.  Sciatica is dreadful, indeed!

Marilyne

Jane -  Please send me the email about Sue.  I'm very concerned about her, and some of the ladies who post in Library~Bookshelf, have also asked about her.  Thank you.

Cottoncandy

Well I'm out of the house tomorrow..daughter talked me into going to the casino..with four others...taking very little money..at least it will be cool in there and the fun of eating and visiting...hope someone hears fro Sue soon.  Darlene

MaryPage

Bottom line, Sue is home and it sounds as though she is doing well, getting out and about for Bridge and luncheons, but her computer is not working for some reason.  I'm sure she'll be back up and running eventually.  It was lovely to hear and cut the edges off my worries.

Jane.  I got the E-M. Good to read that Sue has now gotten to come home. Sounds like getting good help.  I am sure she is not in any mood to be on the computer. I am sure when she is up to it she will get back to us.

Even if a place does not have storms and a house has a basement. I have never been in one that did not need to have a humidifier in. Anytime a room is below ground they need one.  I notice that most homes built in the past 25 years or so not having basements in them. A good idea. I think the USA must have  a lot of water underground. One doesn't seem to have to go far down to hit a Well if needing one.  I hate basements.

JeanneP

Marilyn

Jane thank you for the email re: Sue. Galdd to hear that she is home.

Freckles and I went visiting at the hospital today, if they weren't sleeping the room was empty.

jane

Marilyne...email on the way.   ;)

Cottoncandy

Thank u Jane for the email and home add on Sue.....I will get another card off to her..Darlene

Molly

Many thanks to Friends here who offered suggestions about how to deal with my leg pains AND keep the water out of the basement.  At this point, I massage my outer thighs in the early morning when I wake up and again in the evening when I am preparing to sleep and it seems help quite a bit.  I talked with my Dr. about the meds that were suggested here, but he told me they would NOT be successful for me.

RE our wet basement when it rains: this is an older house with a small basement, NOT the kind that could be turned into another area to use often other than for the Washer and Dryer and Furnace, as well as a few of things Mohamed has collected to ship to Egypt.  He already painted the lower walls and floor a couple of times with some type of cement suggested by a fellow at Home Depot, but it didn't keep the water out.  We realize that this is a very old house, so just "deal with it" when the rains arrives.  A hassle to be sure!

jane

Another hot day here in the "Heat Dome" of the Midwest.  On the news, it looked like it was a huge dome...and now beginning to move east. I suppose once it reaches Boston and NYC, it'll be considered "important" and will be all over the news.   :idiot2:  Somehow, when we in the midwest have a problem, it's never a big deal until it hits the east or west coast. I guess if it doesn't happen in NYC or Boston or LA, it's not really a problem.   :tickedoff:

So we have one convention over and another to begin.  And then the campaigning nonstop until Election Day.  And the day after, the wannabe candidates start again for 2020, regardless of who wins.  It sure gets tiring for me.

Inside day for me today and then out for Friday night supper with friends who will pick us up.

jane

MaryPage

That last part is the part that really bothers me, Jane.  I get so tired of elections, elections, elections.  The truly sick thing is that there can be BIG NEWS of great importance to our peoples, and yet the top topic is who is running for office, and the truly important stuff is down in the small print on page 16.
I wish we could have a law that says NO ONE in the media can mention ANY given election (to be) more than 11 months before it will actually take place.  That way we can have a little relief of hearing about the NEXT dang election for a brief respite.
This has been a non-partisan complaint and is approved by ME!

jane

SharonE

Me too!  I did think Trump did a decent job with his speech last night, but still short on specifics.

Jane, CBS News talked about the MW heat dome last night. It is really strange. Bismark was hotter than we are, however it is now moving east and we're to be at 94 or 5 today and 98 for the weekend.  It is really awful.  They were talking on the news about the heat wave in July '95 that killed 800 people in Chicago.  Scary. Again, thanks for the news on Sue. I can relax again.

I need to go out and fill my bird feeders but am waiting till my back stops hurting for a while.

MP, I'm sure the location of the pinched sciatica nerve determines what works. The prednisone & PT worked for me. I'm sorry you needed surgery for yours.

Molly, that's strange that the dr said that prednisone wouldn't work. Maybe your pain isn't sciatica. Anyway, hang in there.

Nothing happening here.  Sharon

JeanneP

Well I just got back from going the the Farm and Fleet store. Decided would shop early before 9:30am and glad I did as it is above 90 deg already.  I am in for the day. They say with the Humidity high will feel about 104.
They are saying that not seen such hot weather so early in the year or even in August. Lasting so long.  We do get a storm during the night it seems to be every other night. Was a good one last night but just makes the the temps higher.

Darn people on my phone. Had three already this morning. One about Credit cards, another from India wanting to fix a Windows problem. And yes, I won a trip to Bermuda. Aren't I a lucky one.  With all that has come out in the Technical field over the past 25 years looks like should be a way to stop this calling but there isn't they say. Will get as bad on our Mobile phones soon.
Think it is time to make lunch. Not eating as much but not loosing a lb. weight. Think it is all the water I drink.  Not getting my 4 mile a day walks in either.
JeanneP

jane

Gee, Jeanne...we might have won the same trip to the Caribbean!  According to a mysterious "Lisa" I won a trip. She called my cell phone.  I don't know the particulars as I hung up on her!! :knuppel2:

SharonE

Aren't we all lucky!  I received a call I had received a free cruise to Bermuda, a trip to Orlando, and I don't know where else. As soon as I hear the start of their spiel, I hang up too.  Sherry

maryz

I've gotten to where I check the caller ID, and if I don't recognize the number, I let the landline go to the answering machine to see if I know who it is.  I can always pick it up during the message, or call back.  On my cell, I just hit "ignore" and don't answer.  I get more of the ones that ring only once, then hang up.  They don't want to talk, they just want you to think you missed something and call them back.  I don't even think about answering the phone until the second ring.

Today was the usual Friday.  I did play duplicate, but I think we came in last.  Had pretty yucky cards, and didn't bid well, either.  I played one game bid and made 7 - that was not good.  We had a pop-up shower here this afternoon, and got about 0.2" of rain in about 15 minutes - and we'll take whatever we can get.

Have a safe and cool weekend, Buddies
"When someone you love dies, you never quite get over it.  You just learn how to go on without them. But always keep them safely tucked in your heart."

JeanneP

Wouldn't that be nice. We could all meet up and have a fun trip. (As if).  I can't understand how these people who call can still be doing it.  It has gone on for years. Wonder if many get fooled.
Now I know how the ones in Florida work .My friend and I years ago where there and was asked if wanted to take a free trip to one of the islands. (Can't think which one now). But anyway we laughed at him. Fact he took us to dinner.(girl friend really cute). So we asked him what the spam was . He was a talker and told us.  The thing is you sign up saying will take a look at Condo's . Takes about 3 hours of your time. They take you over but people never read the contract. In small writing is says nothing about them paying you way back. So it does end up costing you. But he says it was amazing how many deals they made on the Condo's. You sort of leased them and got to use them for either a week or 2 weeks in a year. Had to find someone to buy out your lease if you found not working out for you.
People got tied up for years.  I would say that the law has closed down that kind of spamming because I don't hear of it done anymore.  I am sure there are others that have replaced it.
I have never believed that there is anything for FREE. Somewhere you are going to pay for it. No matter what the deal is. Read the small print.
