CC with Windows 10 go to Control Panel, then to Uninstall a program and click.  You should go to a long list of all on your computer. Avast should be listed in alpha order.  Click on it and then choose uninstall.  Has been some time since I used Avast but that is how I removed.

Cottoncandy

Thanks Jack...finally got it to uninstall..I have an old computer...has windows defender....if I try to download avg...avast..etc....pc starts giving me problems CC

jackwv

CC I used AVG and Avast in the past but conflict with defender.  I now just use just Windows Defender and pleased with the results.

angelface555

Thank you Jack! That was helpful.

jackwv

Patricia you are welcome.   I have found it an easy tool to use.  In the past I would use paint, but like the snipping tool.   At times I would do several screen shots to demonstrate but often find a decent tutorial in youtube.

Sandy

Thanks for the help with the snipping tool.... (that I didn't even know existed !)   I should be able to learn that.

Regarding windows defender.
I use AVG,  but I am contemplating
uninstalling it,  so that I can use defender.

Have you used a program such as AVG and
then went back to defender???

Do you think that defender would take over if
I uninstalled AVG PRO?

And is defender the only prog of that
type that you use?

I use IOLO's System Mechanic and have since 2000. I really like the product. What I do not like is that I can not permanently turn off Windows Defender. It is okay, but there are better programs. What Microsoft has done is that every couple of weeks, it turns Windows Defender back on and tries to turn off my preferred antivirus and firewall program. So, once a week I go into settings and if WD is on, I have to turn it off again. Sometimes I will get a message saying Windows Defender needs to scan my computer and its back to settings to turn it off again.

How to Geek.com and other sites tell you that it is impossible to permanently turn off WD as Microsoft regularly sends updates that turn it back on. I do not like being blackmailed into a program I do not want.

jackwv

I have another view on Defender, I do not have conflicts since it is the only one I use.  It runs in the background and also does scans.  I have, on occasion, run a full scan with it overnight.

Tomereader1

Is Defender only available on Win 10?  I use Win7.

angelface555

Jack, it is the fact that Microsoft is trying to take my choice away. WD is fine for those who want to use it. I use what is to me a better program and I don't like WD to keep turning itself back on when I have shut everything down. I can't trust such a program.

jackwv

Tomereader  I took a look around and giving you a link to how to turn it on or off (if you have it on your machine.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqcFLabRc10

Now if you do not have it this link will give your the details and the proper download, (from Microsoft)
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/14210/security-essentials-download

Patricia I can understand Microsoft having to address problems of conflict.  Would appear you can have Windows Defender on your machine, guess it would update, but appears you can turn it off as shown in the top link.

Cottoncandy

Thanks Jack...I will just use defender and hope it keeps putter clean...CC

For those of you who are using a WiFi connection, I found a neat little program that keeps track of what devices are connected to your wireless router. It is called Wireless Network Watcher (scroll down, it is in the Network Monitoring Tools section). There are plenty of other FREE little software programs here for Windows. http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/

I had this on my desktop Windows for quite some time, but just installed in on my new laptop several weeks ago. Yesterday, it discovered two devices, not mine, connected. I disconnected the router temporarily to drop the interlopers and then went through and changed my wireless router password. That, of course, meant I had to go through and change the passwords on my devices to correspond. I hope that takes care of the problem for a while.

Nope, changing my router password didn't work. Some oriental named company just connected to my router.

MarsGal, it is all getting too complicated for me.   I did my usual and was checking out nirsoft.  I then looked at Kim Komando that I trust and she even had a link to it.   In reading I see where she has an article about Keeping criminals off your wifi.  I did not read it, started to and it was over my head.  Possibly you can follow to see if it addresses your problem and let us know.

Thanks for the reminder about Kim Komando, Jack. I used to get her newsletters. I didn't have time this morning to check out some of the info on making a router more secure, except for the very basics which I have already done.

Part of the problem is that I wasn't reading my little Watcher problem right. While I was doing a virus scan (and then after, when I forgot the laptop was still on) I brought up both my Kindle Fire and my Kindle e-reader at some point. The Watcher found them but didn't drop them from the lis when I disconnected. I didn't have the window expanded enough to see that they were no longer active. I discovered, this morning, when I linked my Kindle Fire it did not drop it from the Watcher list when I disconnected until I closed Watcher and then reopened it.

I am not out of the woods, so to speak, yet, though. This morning there was some Chinese (or Korean maybe?) company that popped up. And this was after I changed my password. I went upstairs and turned the WiFi Router off for a few minutes. Too bad I didn't write the name down to see who it might have been. Anyway, it did accomplish one thing, it got me to change my router password which I haven't done in years. Like everything else, it should be changed occasionally. The annoying thing is that you have to figure out how to reset the password on the devices too. It took me a while to figure out that I had to click the forget button in several of my devices settings for it to come up and ask for the new password.

jackwv

MarsGal   you are way ahead of me.   Have the Windows 10,  an ipad I seldom use, and an iPhone.   Always mess up the settings and passwords and have to get my son to help me out.

Aside from the WiFi, twice the past week I had pop ups with warning my computer was infected.   Know it is a scam, unable to exit or Ctrl-Alt-delete.  It happened a few times the past year and I restart the computer.   Scans show nothing and all working fine.

JeanneP

I get that Computer Infected also.  Even got voice on one of them. I just ignore. Not seen any damage on mine in years.
I have heard that your WIFI can be being used. Long as they have a number and can be anywhere the say. Not just US.  I don't understand whats going on now with Technology. Just keep slogging along. I don't have things on mine like Bank Info. Anything personal. Can't see a thing that would help anyone.  To me it just a hobby.  So much garbage people do on them now. Facebook being one. Those are things that have kept people on personal computers but also made it easy for scammers to work on things.  Its same for me on my IPad and Tablet. Just have books. and nice to check Google for things. look at a few Emails.Play couple games. See pictures people send. (Never get any on E-M or in the Mail anymore. Just on Facebook all the time. Same with the Texting on the Phone. No long conversations now. Just one liners.    I refuse to use it.

JeanneP

I got my invoice from Comcast today for December 31 payment. Put the Internet part up $27. Time I went to have a check with them. I very seldom use Comcast other than they are my Server. E-M prog. on it no good. and don't use it for search and so will see if I can cut the Internet part down as I do have to have their Modem and I have the TV on it.  I can read E-M on my IPad or Tablet.  Will go and see.
JeanneP

MarsGal

Jeanne, I suspect that Comcast is trying to take advantage that more of their customers are going off cable and just doing streaming over their their computers and such. When I look at the individual prices, the internet fee is way higher than the digital TV price. Also, I was talking to a CSR earlier this year and discovered that I can't get the speed I have now except with a bundle. So my choice is to stay where I am or just get the internet, but a a slower speed. I can save a few bucks by adding the phone to Comcast and dropping my AT&T Home Wireless System, but then I would have to buy a new modem. The modem I just bought a year ago does not support VOIP. Sometimes I just throw up my hands and give up thinking about it.

JeanneP

Something strange happening now on my W7 desktop.  When I get a E-M with a picture and I try to forward it to someone. Then it just vanishes off my inbox. I look in the sent and no photo shows.  Now I find them if I clik on Important . Then it sent the photo out.  On the address it had in Brackets.  (The Cloud). I am always seeing that show up now.  I never registered to Use (the cloud). Don't want it.  More strange things happening now on computers.
Can't just get into anyones Web page now even if from Googling it. site comes up but one has to give a E-M address before you can bring up the Web page to see anything.

"Can we just assume that everyone who has ever had a yahoo account is exposed at this point? Save us all some effort."

This is separate from the breach announced in September 2016.

"Yahoops. Again.Michael Gillett added,
CNBC @CNBC
BREAKING: Yahoo discloses hack that may affect "more than one billion user accounts", "likely distinct" from hack disclosed on Sept 22, 2016"

"Yahoo said Wednesday that more than 1 billion user accounts â€" meaning most of the Internet giant’s customers worldwide â€" were hacked in 2013, leading to the release of user names, telephone numbers, dates of birth and other personal information.

News of the hack, coming after the announcement in September of a separate hack affecting 500 million accounts, means that Yahoo has been the victim of the two largest data breaches ever reported. Both have been announced since Yahoo agreed to sell its core businesses to telecommunications giant Verizon in July for $4.8 billion.

The incident raised new questions among analysts regarding the viability of that deal and whether the valuation will need to be changed, especially if the hacks trigger litigation against the company.

“This is another major blow,” said Jeff Kagan, a Georgia-based telecommunications industry analyst. “It throws into question what’s really going on at Yahoo. And if you don’t really know what’s going on at Yahoo, does Verizon have the guts to buy a potential bomb? This company could explode with major problems and major losses.”

In the 2013 incident, Yahoo said that credit card and bank account numbers, which are stored separately, were not affected, but the breach did include some unencrypted “security questions” that the company uses to authenticate users.

[Have you ever had a Yahoo account? You might want to change some passwords.]

Yahoo also reported a separate incident Wednesday in which hackers used what the company called “forged cookies” to gain access to some accounts, though it did not give the number. That incident, the company said, appeared to have links to the one announced in September involving “state-sponsored” attackers. Law enforcement officials said that breach, which happened in 2014, was probably the work of Russian hackers, though no final conclusion has been reached.

To minimize the damage, Yahoo is alerting affected customers and requiring them to change their passwords. But the scale of the hack and the time that has passed since it happened suggests that few of the company’s customers were unaffected. Given the size of the two hacks, many Yahoo users are likely to have had their information stolen more than once.

Yahoo has said it has more than 1 billion users worldwide, though the company’s fortunes have been sagging for years as other tech companies have snatched away pieces of its search, email and other Web-based businesses.

“Yahoo encourages users to review all of their online accounts for suspicious activity and to change their passwords and security questions and answers for any other accounts on which they use the same or similar information used for their Yahoo account,” the company said in a statement. “The company further recommends that users avoid clicking links or downloading attachments from suspicious emails and that they be cautious of unsolicited communications that ask for personal information.”

Regarding the deal with Verizon, Yahoo said in a statement, “We are confident in Yahoo’s value and we continue to work towards integration with Verizon.”

Verizon spokesman Bob Varettoni said: “As we’ve said all along, we will evaluate the situation as Yahoo continues its investigation. We will review the impact of this new development before reaching any final conclusions.”

Now my Server will not accept E-M  using Yahoo Acct. at the moment.

I am not having problems getting into S and F or onto  the Internet but when  it comes to E-M accounts they have gone crazy. I use Comcast as my server and it is really messed up. Can't get into my Account there at all. Now wanting a 4 did get security ID number  put in along  with a voice security. No idea what they are talking about.  All I can reach right now on them is in the Philippines. Spent over a hour twice. Got no where. To cold out to go see them at the office here and you can't get a phone number for them.

What a joke yahoo has become.

angelface555

Jane, I think two of the questions should be, Why are they only discussing it now? Was it just discovered?

jane

YES!  YES!  I agree, Angelface!!

Three years later?  Please!  Now they want people to change their password.  It's ridiculous!

JeanneP

Yahoo is beginning to get hard to follow also. Seem like they are all trying to outdo the other.  My Gmail got crazy for awhile . Wanting you you change to a new way. I then opened up a Yahoo.  After awhile Gmail to went back to the old way on mine.
Even Comcast who is my Server.  They have really gone strange. Trying to get things worked out with them.  Also pricing me out of theirs.  All seems to be in their E-M programs .  Soon I think E-Mailing will be gone.  Most people seem to be using Texting and Facebook.  None in my family hardly use E-M anymore.
