Oldiesmann: Relevant links can be found in topics in the Homemaking, Food & Garden board. I'll see about moving them over to articles here when I get a chance.

2024-05-02, 00:07:54
Oldiesmann: Found them. They're on the CP site: https://www.christianphotographers.com/recipes/recipeindex.html

Oldiesmann: I'm not finding anything related to recipes on the site. I'll do some digging through the Internet Archive and see if I can dig them up. It's possible that got lost in the big server crash back in 2016

JeanneP: I am trying to get into the Archives of the Recipes that where moved over from Senior net few years ago, Can't find them

Domestic Goddess: Is this correct, if one would like to post/share a recipe, we do so here?  If so, was searching to see if there were separate recipe categories?

Oldiesmann: The chat can be accessed from the menu but I don't kow how often anyone is in there

Tomereader   thanks for posting that your problem was solved.   I do not have MSWord.  I use Notepad free and included with Windows 10.   No tab for clipart, but you can include photos.

JeanneP

Looks like MS Window Essential will end Jan 10th.

I am still using W7 so will have to see what happens.  http://www.howtogeek.com/286552/how-to-replace-windows-essentials-2012-after-support-ends-in-january/

Jack and/or Rammel, in the past there has been mention of two places to get electronic/computer stuff. One was NewEgg, and I can't remember the other one.  Seems it begins with the letter C, but it's possible I am just dreaming that!LOL.  Can you help?

jackwv

Tomereader1  What kind of equipment did you want.  I simply use Walmart, Best Buy, Target and Staples.

RAMMEL

Tomereader1,

The other might have been "Tiger Direct", but I have been leary of their return policy. But have used them when they have just what I want.

I don't think it was Tiger Direct.  I've shopped at Walmart, Target.  Going to best buy, maybe this weekend.  Staples probably won't have what I'm looking for.  Ooops, forgot to say:  Looking for well-priced BluRay player and a Soundbar.
Trying not to spend a fortune!

Tomereader1

Found it... was Crutchfield, but they are mostly high dollar equipment.  They have some reasonable priced BluRay players.

Thanks for helping.

JeanneP

Now soon there will be no DVD players to be found. I need to buy a new one before that happens.  Now all say Blue Ray. Will they use the Regular DVD also.
I still have one that does DVD and VCR.  One in the room children use is here that just plays VCR.  I have so many of those tapes. Wedding. Childrens Cartoons. Things going back may years. Use the one daily that does the DVD as again I have hundreds I want to keep.  I don't have anything Blue Ray as yet. See some on sale right now.
JeanneP

jackwv

JeanneP    You should take the time to copy what you want from the DVD to your computer.  If you have something on VCR you should be able to get a gadget that will transfer to DVD/Computer.   I have all my movies converted to digital and while I kept a few DVD's I have everything on my computer, with copies on my external hard drive and even flash drives.

JeanneP

Jack.  Yes. I had lots of Europe Trips put over from Slides to VCR . need to now put to DVD. I have got way to many things to put over. Will just hold onto the things to play them on. Sort of fun watching Old movies on the TV that are VCR. I collected Black and white movies for years.

Well I think my Desktop is now in bad shape. Friend said to take it apart and bring it to him and he will start over and clean off and reinstall every thing. Will do it as not going to pick up the new one yet. Not in a hurry to leave W7.
Malware must have hit me.. No idea what that does but people do say that is the problem. Thing have just installed themselves on that I never asked and did.  I have spent time seeing if could clean them off. No way.  I took Firefox of and reinstalled. Can't get rid of the one thing that keep coming back as my home page. Its some thing where you can check the speed you computer working.. Another thing is Avast. and another one like it. All downloaded them selves. I didn't want Google Chrome on  but its on now.
On WXP I remember how one could go in and bring up what was on computer and you could reinstall (take off what you didn't want). Can't think where we went to do that..don't have the book on W7 anymore. Anyone remember where it went on W7. I have brought up All Programs but tried to delete Avast which did show on there. But there is another way to check all on the Hard drive.
JeanneP

jackwv

JeanneP  let your friend handle.  I have had many of the problems you describe and a real headache trying to reinstall etc.  Do feel you will be happy with 10 and if friend works with you, can set it up to be a lot like 7 for your use.

JeanneP

Yes. I will do that once this weather gets better.  I can go on the Internet on the Desktop but it is so slow and things keep poping up. I still think i all ties into Mozilla/Firefox. although I have used them for my browser for years.
JeanneP

Microsoft has been advertising that their browser is safer than Firefox these days. I have both, but mostly still use Firefox.

What I found is that when I manually update some of my programs, or when I go to install a new one, they sometimes give you the option of installing other things, like Adobe does with McAfee and CCleaner does with Chrome. I have to remember to uncheck the box so that these unwanted extras don't install along with the program I want. Sometimes I forget and then have to uninstall the unwanted programs.

I've been reading the reviews for LastPass password manager on PC Mag and am considering this.

Anybody use it or something else?

MaryTX

I think Larry uses it.  I tried it.  Either I missed something in installing it or whatever, it messed up my computer.  I had a heck of a time getting rid of it so I'm back to the old fashioned way :).

Read that LastPass thought they "might" of been hacked 2011 and had everyone re do.   I know I am exposed.  I do not keep passwords on my machine, but do have them written down.  I really do not trust any firm to handle my records and seldom use the cloud except for photos.  Feel anyone can be hacked, will just take my chances, so far no problems.

jane

THanks, MaryTx....I don't need something trying to mess with my computer.  I appear to do enough to screw it up! ;D

Yep...I've leaned your way also, Jack.  I have a zippered notebook with all our passwords in it.  I just get tired of having to change some every 6 months and for sites that don't have anything of value of mine!

I also don't think anyone is intentionally trying to get my financial data...they won't bother with me when they can do the banks and the big clearing houses for credit cards....yep...we had to get a new one 'cause the big clearning house was compromised!

jane

so_P_bubble

Jack I was/am doing it your way as well. But... when on my visit in Canada I lost my precious little notebook, probably in my hotel room and it could not be found.  A great loss, and now I learned that I should also have a back up notebook for these passwords.

JeanneP

I now found how to Uninstall from the W7.  Must not have used it since I had XP . could just not figure out where it was.  But anyway. Spent a hours trying to clean off all the things that started appearing on this W7 desktop. What a mess. Had 6 things on I have never heard of. Just appeared and really messed the computer up.

I know I am not going to even install anything that looks O.K . Keep it the way it is.  4 out of the six took so long to go.  All the questions as to why removing had to answer.

I have 2 packages here waiting to be mailed since last Saturday. Storm just will not let up. Temps not bad 43 deg. but it doesn't stop one getting soaked. So will hold until tomorrow. Hope it quits.  seems like down South it is bad also. So much for Winter.

Cleaning out the file drawers on my desk. Thing in there going back years. I have to get better at keeping things in order.  (Say this every January)

Carry a copy of passwords in my wallet, so problem if lost.  Several do not have the site and are joined together so that I am able to pickup the portion I want.

Just wondered about putting on a small flash drive and having available. (problem if lost)

With Russia, China and our Government busy hacking etc.   probably no way to keep entirely safe. ;) ;)

When installing anything, I always do a custom install to avoid addons and am still surprised when one slips through. I use LastPass, but you do have to remember or write down your master password. I have all of my passwords written down as well as on a cloud server in hopefully a disguise.

I have a regular antivirus, IOLO's System Mechanic that consistently rates high as well as a second opinion malware and rootkit program as well as Malabytes; and I still have to pay attention as Windows Defender keeps trying to shut them down and reopens.

Altho it is honest in telling you that it will be doing this and I am unable to lock it down as I did with Cortana.  :tickedoff:   "Real Time Protection:  This helps find and stop malware from installing. You can turn this off temporarily, but if its off for awhile, we will turn it back on automatically" Microsoft at its most controlling!

JeanneP. You might have an issue such as "SavingsCool" malware that gets on your system with bad program downloads and does exactly what you are talking about. It changes things around on your computer, downloads ad ware as well as malware and it's hard to be rid of.

Jack --- Interesting idea.  You could put them on a flash drive but encrypt them. Then you could have a complex encryption word but one that you could easily remember.

I have a stack of index cards about 1 1/2  to 2" high of sites and their passwords and user names.  This is for three people that access stuff from my puters.

I am beginning to lose some interest in computers I think.  Enjoyed them for years but just to much of a mess now trying to keep ahead of things.

Really enjoyed Google for Searching for Different Web sites.  Now you just can't type in a Word. say if Travel area or  person Cooking site. Use to put you right into their Web page.  Now longer do that. Dozens of places alike come up.
Tried it today just to get their Tel. Number.  Never did get the Web page up.

I quit using Edge to search, when you go to their home page they are trying to sell too much.  Use IE and Google as my search engine.

JeanneP  I have never lost interest in computers.  I do not read books, but spend a lot of time on computers and remain overwhelmed with the information and entertainment they provide.

Rick I never encrypted a flash drive, good idea to consider.

Jack is google chrome any good to use? Candy

jackwv

CC unable to answer your question, hope others will offer an opinion.  I have windows 10 and edge that I do not use.  I still use IE and have google as my search engine.    Giving a link to a recent article and looks like I should consider the move to Chrome.  It appears the most popular and would like to hear from others that use it.

Link  http://www.howtogeek.com/257964/how-to-migrate-from-internet-explorer-or-edge-to-chrome-and-why-you-should/

jackwv

CC   I am looking into possibly switching to Chrome, but temp. staying with IE.   I caught this fairly recent comment on zdnet.

There are also some sites, most noteworthy is Facebook, which don't play well with Edge. Still, that isn't so much Microsoft's problem as it is Facebook playing fast and loose with web standards. Of course, that's not going to matter to you if you're having fits making Facebook comments.

Taken all-in-all, Chrome's my first pick for Windows 10. However, I can see why some of you would prefer Edge. I will be watching Edge closely. I'm told by friends at Microsoft that the company is putting lots of resources behind it. By this time next year, Edge may be the unqualified best Windows 10 web browser, but it's not there yet.

Sandy

Chrome has been my browser of choice now for many years ...  I have Edge but only use it if
for some reason Chrome is giving me a problem...  Then I uninstall it,  and use Edge to download and re-install Chrome.

This usually clears up  any issues that I might have come
across on Chrome.   (Which rarely occurs)

Sandy

I can't compare Chrome  to other browsers because it has been so many years since I have experienced others.

Before Windows 10, I used both Chrome and Firefox. Then I began having issues with Firefox and went exclusively to Chrome. I have always prefered Google to other search engines because it found items easily that other search engines failed at.

Now I use Chrome just like Sandy has mentioned.
