Oldiesmann: Relevant links can be found in topics in the Homemaking, Food & Garden board. I'll see about moving them over to articles here when I get a chance.

Oldiesmann: Found them. They're on the CP site: https://www.christianphotographers.com/recipes/recipeindex.html

Oldiesmann: I'm not finding anything related to recipes on the site. I'll do some digging through the Internet Archive and see if I can dig them up. It's possible that got lost in the big server crash back in 2016

Sandy and Patricia thanks may change to Chrome and CC appears you may have your answer.

JeanneP

Firefox does seem like it gives a few problems now.  I had the Chrome Icon on my Desktop and Deleted it. Maybe should give it a try. do I just bring up its home page?
JeanneP

jackwv

JeanneP just back from my physical and emailing the kids all is ok.   Saw your post, I am sending a link that should answer your question, in fact I am about to give it a go myself.

http://www.howtogeek.com/257964/how-to-migrate-from-internet-explorer-or-edge-to-chrome-and-why-you-should/

JeanneP

MaryAnn.  See if this tells you anything on working the W10 on your new Laptop

I can't stand the pads either.http://www.howtogeek.com/286905/what-is-a-precision-touchpad-on-windows-pcs/

Jack.  Now my Desktop does seems to work better. Nothing popping up . Still a little slow though and the Home page wont hold.

I have really cleaned a lot of stuff off.  A lot where the companies try to have you download theirs to stop things getting into the computer. (Like they got in).
Some as high as $99 a year.   I know a little more now on getting the off.

I downloaded chrome and made it my default, was able to keep my favorites.  Only used several times but all seems well.

JeanneP on downloads I try to go to the source and not some article in a link that recommends.  I am also sure to read each popup and eliminate many recommendations that they try to sneak past.   You also have to be careful of free offers that are simply a trial.

jane

I, too, use chrome almost exclusively anymore.  I do have IE and Firefox on, in case of browser "kerfuffle"
and it works well for me.  I have Windows 8.1.

Mary Ann

JeanneP, I went to Settings in Windows 10 and it appears I have a standard touchpad.  Some time ago, I disabled the touchpad so I could use the mouse alone.  It's a shame it took me so long because I remember the conflict between the touchpad and mouse from previous troubles but as of now, my mouse is working fine and I don't have the screen going up and down and the font stays the same.  I am using Firefox.

I have Windows Ten and I have disabled both Cortana and the touchpad. I am still trying to discover a way to disable Windows Defender.

Best advice is to have no more than half of your memory full on your computer, only install what is needed and will be used and never on an automatic download and installation. Always, always use custom installation and even then go immediately to your control panel and check to see if any undesirable add-ons slipped thru!

You need, separate from your computer, two system backups. You may use free or paid cloud services,(Info is on their servers, not yours, but assessable always for you); external hard drives or written documents. This is critical.

Nowadays you need a good antivirus, a second opinion software and usually Malabytes. This is non-negotiable if you want to keep your computer healthy and each of these should be checked at reputable sites for good reviews and always, always downloaded from the source and not some anonymous site. There are excellent free and purchased programs.

Never use the red X to check out of a program or site you are wary of. This can lead you to more scams and malware. Always use control-alt-delete. A good plan to have, available for all browsers and in paid and free versions is WOT or Web Of Trust.

This will stop you from clicking on bad sites and will display a page saying it is a bad place, bad reviews and will ask if you really want to go there. It will give you the option to go ahead or go back, safe. You still need to pay attention because some places will always slip through.

You pay a lot of money for your computer and do you really want all your personal and financial information available for scammers' use? And do you really want to pay crazy amounts of money to fix what you didn't pay attention to or for another new computer?

Very good advice, Angelface. I love Malwarebytes. I use Avast anti-virus, but I did not entirely disable Windows Defender (which I read is actually not that bad). Windows Defender pops up several times a week to request a quick scan of essential bits. It recognizes that another anti-virus is in place to do the heavy work. I really like WOT, too.

What I haven't done yet, but keep threatening to do, is disable my touchpad. I keep bumping it when typing, so strange things sometimes happen. I refuse to use Cloud storage for most things, preferring to back up my files to flash drive or external hard drive. Some things are important enough to print out hard copy as well.

jane

I don't know if you've heard of Touch Freeze?  It's a free program that keeps those accidental hits from your hands as you type when you've had a mouse attached to your computer.  I kept having problems with my typing jumping around up and down on a page when I was typing.  I found that Touch Freeze solved my problem.  It still allows you to use the touchpad if you choose, but it keeps those accidental touches from screwing up your typing.

Here are some links you can look at:

I have a beef with Microsoft and their Windows Defender as one; it isn't as good a program like the one I have always running in the background, yet keeps turning itself back on and attempting to close down my chosen programs. I know because both System Mechanic and Malabytes use a popup saying it is attempting to block all or parts of their programming. I then have to go back into settings to manually turn it off again. That is not the sign of a reputable program, more like malware, in my opinion!

jackwv

Patricia, for my part I run only Windows Defender and am pleased with it.   There are links for turning it off in registry etc.   Here is one link hope it works for you, a google search has other links.

Thank you for those links, Jack!

Well my old windows vista wouldn't let me down load google chrome...said vista wasn't supported anymore...guess I will have to upgrade or buy new pic...CC

Darlene, my son erased my computer and reloaded 8.1 and it's doing great.  I don't really do anything much online except look at web sites here and others that I think are safe--don't play games, run a quick scan daily and a full scan every few days.  So I'm hoping to keep this going for quite some time.  I've never used Windows Vista.

Sue

jackwv

CC I am trying Chrome, but usually still use IE   really not much difference.  You should consider the age of your computer and how much memory, you can just continue with IE.  You can check and see the cost to do as Sue did.  I am still using a 6 year old Gateway
If you use a desktop and no touch screen they are selling for $350 to &500.

Cottoncandy

Thank you Sue and Jack for ur comments.....right now will just use I.E.  CC

JeanneP

On cleaning up my desktop W7 I must had. Cleaned off.  The Allow cookies. It is telling me I can't get in without allowing cookies. Can't get into my Email at all.  I have tried to find how to do that but so far can't find out how it's done. Seems my memory only does MS XP
JeanneP

jackwv

JeanneP   Sounds like you are running XP, but regardless if XP or 7   you can pay for 10 but would make more sense to buy a new machine, you may not need an all in one, but just the computer and laptops inexpensive.

Know that is not much of an answer, but sounds like you need technical assistance.   It may be worth going to this link then scrolling down to push the blue  connecting with the help desk, then  select phone.  You will discuss with someone that can help you and even temp. do a remote takeover to help.  Should be no charge, but ask first.

How about this

1.In Internet Explorer, select the Tools button, and then select Internet options.
2.Select the Privacy tab, and under Settings, move the slider to the top to block all cookies (or the bottom to allow all cookies), and then select OK.

Or check this out

Thanks, Angelface.  I use both Google Drive and dropbox.  I'm going to think about doing this and if I'd really need any emails I've kept in various gmail subfolders.

angelface555

It took about an hour I believe by the time stamps. It was overnight so I was off in La La Land.

It did not work for me. After 3 hours I had a broken file :(  end when I tried a smaller one, it could not be open.  Pity.  I just wanted to save my archived mails.
