Domestic Goddess: Is this correct, if one would like to post/share a recipe, we do so here?  If so, was searching to see if there were separate recipe categories?

I'm not that familiar with laptops. I just use mine. But I would bet there is a way to adjust the width height, and centering --- just as a stand alone monitor does.

I must have disabled allow cookies on this desktop W7. Now Firefox will not let me get into a lot of sites.  I don't remember where to find how I can put the Allow cookies .  Firefox is the only one I have on here. Will not even let me get into any other and install such a Int. Exp.

Rammel.
Yes, E-M seems to be working O.K.  Not many people using it anymore. I have just gone through. Tools-Options. All seems to be the same as ever was. I don't really know where the Cookies shows. Use to be in a list asking if allowed or not.  That list not the same on this W7.

Did you manage to install the W10 on your old WXP.?  I still have a desktop in the cupboard that has WXP on . Loved that system I have about 5 of the new ones never opened. Use to get them from SIL what they came out.  Don't have a W10 though. Think I have W7 someplace.

"Did you manage to install the W10 on your old WXP.? " --- Not yet.  I'm still playing with the stuff Santa brought  :)

You do restart your puter occasionally, don't you?

When I turn my laptop on (Win-7) I'll poke around and see if I come up with anything that might help.

I am still getting where Firefox is say can't get in Caused by Cookies not allowed. Also getting a lot of Adds popping up now.  Friend who kept my computers running good. He passed away 6  weeks ago. He was wanting to reinstall W7 again a couple of months ago.  So I will have to make up what to do. Would like to hold off until I manage to get down to Texas as my SIL has always built mine and puts on everything I want. Once he sets on up its usually few year before problem.  Have 3 GS and him all in the business but just so far away.

Rammel. I did a few changes and thought I had that Cookie problem fixed but still Firefox will not let me in some.
On this old W7 desktop I thought I had another browser beside Firefox. I can type IE in Google to try and install it but it is one that Firefox will not open. Use to be a Bing. What happened to it. It was Microsoft also

I have a question about external hard drives. While I do use two cloud services for a monthly fee, I mainly depend on three 4T external hard drives for my important data. I do not leave them plugged into the computer, only when I upload or download, and they are stored away from the computer. I thought I was protected.

Now I'm reading that these hard drives have a lifetime average of three to five years, Do they mean both added inner drives or those as well as external drives? I have a lot of data on my external drives that I do not want to lose, and they are not cheap, over a hundred for each external! I also do not fully trust cloud services thus the hard backups. Any suggestions?

jackwv

Patricia, thanks for the post, it had me looking.  Know it is no surprise to you but I have no suggestions.   I do not have that volume on my computer, I have just a 1.5 tb external drive that is always connected for backups and info needed to reinstall.  I do not use cloud services, concerned with security.   Over the years progressing from DVD to flash drives I have continually downsized the photos, video document information.   With photos I have deleted many, keeping for the most part Family. I then have a number of travel etc, but again keep just the favorites.  Video takes a bit of space and have again reduced the number kept.  A Sandisk now holds the photos and video as well as having copies on the external drive.

I just looked at the literature on the FreeAgent external drive and see I purchased Dec 2010, and the warranty was only for 5 years. Have had no issues but will be interested in the comments from those looking in.

Thanks Jack, but I do have a suggestion re your leaving the external plugged into your computer. There are so many antivirus and other dangers with our computers that no one, no matter what precautions are taken, is completely safe.

I would only leave the external plugged into your computer during use and unplugged and set away when not in use. Any damage done to your computer will also be done to anything plugged into that computer

jackwv

Patricia thanks.   That is easy enough to follow, will try to remember.  I have the computer on all day, sometimes will put to sleep but not shut down.  Will not be on for a bit so unplugged the external.

jane

Angelface....I rotate between two external harddrives and replace one when it’s 3-4 yrs old.  I keep some spreadsheets there of our financial stuff, so I don’t need more than 1 T of space.  I also, have a number of flash drives and save the hat same financial stuff there, too, on a rotating basis.

Angel, I asked my guru.  His answer is that  HD can works more than 500,000 rounds,   it means that it depend on how much you  use it. Also the  NEW hard drives are more reliable because they do not have moving parts like the older generation that was rotating.

angelface555

Thanks, everyone. I have four external hard drives, not flash drives, which are 4T each. Three of them are full and one has 3.28T out of 4T. While the other filled ones are on the shelf, the last sits on my computer table when not in use. I looked it up, and I paid 113. for the last one.

They are all full of info I want to save,  having decluttered each as it became full. For example, in my family photos, I have derrotypes of a Union officer and two Confederate army officers from the same family unit. Since they are not used usually after being filled, does that mean I do not need to replace any which could get expensive fast?

jackwv

Patricia that is a lot of files, mine are limited.

I unplugged the external drive and may continue to do so.  Mine is a Seagate and found this little piece for proper steps to do so.  (now they tell me  :) ))

Jack, those files, dating back at least eight years, represent two laptops and one desktop computer. I have several hundred photography files, PSP graphics files and a large syllabus of the classes I took in the past and am taking today.

I have that symbol for turning off an attached item in my hidden icons space on the lower right side next to my volume control. It's good advice!

so_P_bubble

I have always disconnected the safe way. even downloading from my camera, I turn it off first before disconnecting. I compare it to turning off a light before changing the bulb.

RAMMEL

The "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the System Tray is there to assure you that the item you want to remove is not busy doing something. If you remove or shut off an item when it is in the middle of doing something it could cause the loss of data and mess the item up. Use it. It's a good thing

Jack.  I don't have a W7 manual now and really dont do a whole lot on my W7 Desktop.  I have even forgotten lots I learned 6 years ago when I got it. I may as well decide to go to a new Desktop with W10 if I have to learn over.
But now I just did a restore  and played around and it seems that now I can get the document files up again.  I had about 89 documents in there and so I have deleted about 60 of them. One other things I had forgotten is how to delete lots that had not gone into files I know was a way to just do them all with one clik. so did it one by one. Then cleaned out the recycle bin.
JeanneP

jackwv

Jeanne P   I always delete one by one.  I would make copies of all documents you want.
