Oldiesmann: Finally got the AmazonBot situation under control. I basically changed some server settings to tell AmazonBot that it's not allowed to access anything on the site. That should fix the speed issues we've been experiencing lately

Shirleyn, good, now if you open it in the future you will see that it is updating and scanning daily.

Shirley

I am one happy camper/computer-er this morning.  Jack, you've cured my sleeping problem with 10, thanks to the e-mail showing how-to.... I am most grateful.

Other problem with the fight between Defender & Avast.... Avast still has the X over the icon & mouse under shows this computer is NOT protected.  BUT, Defender shows it is up & running & scanning.  Not sure how or why, but I will leave as is until my son is around to decide if I should try to un-install Avast.  It has always been good to have, never had anything come through since installing it back when the other free protection (can't remember the name, but equally satisfied with it)... said it would go to pay-for and not sure it ever did.  I have McAfee free with my Cox server but have never used it, had pay for Norton on other computers & always some problem with it.  At any rate, you have solved my computer problems up to date so will quit crying for today!

We have sprinkles out right now, went to vac the pool but gave up .... I love being out in the rain but not too sure I want to be playing with the "on & off" power when raining.  Good excuse, I thought~

I often have a hard time describing a problem, or understanding what others may describe when addressing problems (the story of my life)   I would suggest, when possible that you send a screen shot or snippet of what you are seeing on your screen, when appropriate.  Now both the screen shot or snip will require your resizing and possibly photobucket, but after doing so several times it gets simple (takes a few minutes)

On windows 10 to take a screen shot simply press the "Prt Scrn" button on the keypad up to the right of the function keys.  At the same time press the windows logo at the bottom left.  Here is a screen shot of my entire desktop including a look at my Defender page.

To just take a portion of what you are viewing use the Snipping Tool (handy to copy a photo, recipe etc)
The Snipping Tool comes with windows 10, you find it under the list of what is on your machine, it is under Windows Accessories.
You can right click on it and put it on your start.  (not giving info on snipping, should be easy to follow)
Here is the snip of just the portion of the screen shot if I wanted to show what Windows Defender was displaying,.  This can be direct for displaying anything showing on your screen.

The Snipping Tool also comes with Win-7.

Rick I find the snipping tool to be very useful. I used it on 7 but do not recall how I accessed it, believe I made a shortcut.  There are youtube videos on the use of both the snipping tool and screenshots.

Well yesterday I finely got a message on my W7 desktop from MS. telling me that this is the last time W10 will be offered to me on this computer. (it was coming up every other day). It gives the choice of downloading W10 now or hit NO and it will no longer be coming on. Lets just see if they keep their word.  Although I did think from when it first started they said it would be offered only until June 30th.

It is sometimes easier to put a tool or setting shortcut on your taskbar.

angelface555

Jeanne, I went back when I got a new computer to W7Pro, for a program said to work better on W7. I disliked how inconvenient it was for me and just plain missing items and shortcuts I used daily so after a week switched back to W10 and never looked back. If you stayed at lower windows system, it is hard to use easily and understand a more current system and why should you if you are happy with what you have?

JeanneP

Yes, there is nothing on W10 for me that I need to stop using W7 for.  I am so use to just jumping for W7 to the IPad and from there to the Amazon Fire Tablet. I don't need to learn anything more.

You are right,  If you stayed at lower windows system, it is hard to use easily and understand a more current system and why should you if you are happy with what you have?

An icon for Windows 10 installation has been on my toolbar for a long time.   Yesterday, I noticed a yellow exclamation point on the icon.  I thought it was a “warning” of the upcoming deadline but when I clicked on it, a screen popped up saying Windows 10 is not compatible with this computer.

Another area says:

“ NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430
The display manufacturer hasn’t made your display compatible with Windows 10.  Check with the manufacturer for support”.

It invites me to View the Report, which I have not done â€" and to “check out new PCs”, which I did not do.   I can also click  “No thanks, maybe later”.  I have not done this, either.

Suggestions?

Edit a day later.
“ NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 is on a sticker on the front of my computer.  What does it mean?

Also dug through files and found that I bought this computer in June, 2010.

Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.

JeanneP

Tell me to download W10 was coming on my computer daily up to the end of June. It did say on the last time that MS would not be downloading a free W10 after June 30. Must be true. not come up since.  I didn't want it on this computer. Will get it when I get a new one.

You can still get W10 for free till the end of July after that you have to pay for it.

Rick, "How to geek" is still showing ways to delete Cortana, which is another fancy version of Bing, from your computer. They are doing the same with Windows Defender. They have an article, (Microsoft); that if you don't want to use Windows Defender, you can still turn it on for auxiliary sweeps. When you do, however, it attempts to shut down all other antivirus programs.

I feel Bing aka Cortana is an inferior search program, more information collection gathering and I don't like Edge even if they have allowed some apps and adware programs. They are just not as good as other browsers and have a long way to go to even come close. Personally, I prefer Google and try to avoid using a multitude of other search engines.

There are other browsers and systems such as Ubuntu and Linux, so Microsoft is trying to foist themselves on an unwary public before they learn better. Apple is not as well versed as Microsoft, but it isn't any different in business tactics.

angelface555

That may be true Jack, but there are increasing reports of it hijacking your other antivirus programs if you accept Microsoft's new idea of using Windows Defender as an occasional product. To me, that is fraud no matter how good it may be or some folks feel it may be.

Have you downloaded the new update and seen the promos for using Defender occasionally?

RAMMEL

Much of the Windows-10 chatter reminds me of the days when M$ ended up in Court over the Java issue and IE/Netscape.     Where oh where will it all go.

Jack, no one has said anything about simply using Windows Defender on its own. What is being said is that Microsoft states it will run along side your own antivirus without interfering with it in the new update. It is supposed to be like a separate  extra layer of protection.

What people are saying, increasingly, by those who opted for it, is that it tries to turn off or destroy your other antivirus. So Microsoft's claims are false.

I just upgraded to the new built 1607 "Anniversary" version of Windows 10 from build 5111. Some of my programs that worked in 5111 no longer work and my screen is low res. It is only giving me three resolution  choices. I remember having that problem, briefly, when I went to Windows 10 but was able to find the solution. I must not remember what I did to fix it because none of my solutions are working. I may go out to HP and redownload the last drivers available. Also, it looks like I have to try and re-find my last drivers for the video card. The card is no longer supported. My machine is only six years old.

My alternative is going to be Ubuntu 16.04 also newly released. I am testing it as I "speak". So far, I like it a lot.

RAMMEL

MarsGal

So, what you're saying is that a Win-10 update disabled some of the prior working Win-10 stuff?

MarsGal and Rick.   Does the build update load with all other updates if you have automatic update.   The Build bit has me confused (nothing new)  I found by typing Winver in the search window that it gave the build.   Here is mine.  Is there a need on my part to go further and try to update?

MarsGal

Well Rammel, in all fairness I have to say  that my machine is six years old. Some of the hardware are EOL and no longer supported. But, yes, I had an old Majong program that  I love will no longer work on the 1607 version and I could not resolve the problem with low res screen. Version 5111 had the 1600x900 resolution I need, but the new version only sees three resolution choices from which to select. The screen resolution is a biggy for me. Another wonderful problem I had with Windows 10 on this machine is that it would not let me troubleshoot or do a recovery. Every time I went into the troubleshoot mode I lost both my mouse and my keyboard functions, even in safe mode.

Jack, I was hoping to use the go back to the previous build feature in settings, but it didn't list 5111, nor did the recent updates log. How odd, but than again we are talking about Microsoft. It could be because I bypassed the wait in line and downloaded if from the site.

At any rate, my new laptop has Version 5111 on it and it works just fine for now. I installed my old majong game on it okay. Also, I checked the screen resolution offerings and a whole bunch came up. Now I hope that they don't screw that up if/when 1607 downloads, but then this is all new and still supported hardware.

I installed Ubuntu 16.04 on this machine this morning. It was easy, fast, and it looks and works great. My main problem with Linux always was properly downloading extra software that I want. It looks like it will be a lot more easy now. The other nice thing I like about Ubuntu is that I am not coerced/forced into cloud based applications and I don't need more and better social media programing - I don't do Facebook, Twitter and the like and I don't use Cloud services except for Amazon music and ebooks. I refuse to store documents and financials on the cloud. That is what I have a Flash Drive for.

Now I am off to find out if AceMoney Lite will truly work on Linux and see about antivirus programs.

MARSGAL   Is there a chance your version is 1511  not  5111

Jack and I both show 1511.

MARSGAL,
You said - "the new version only sees three resolution choices from which to select"

I had the same problem with just three choices when I first installed Win 10 last year and I think I cured it by downloading and installing a new driver from my motherboard manufacturer. I have ten screen resolutions to choose from now.

MarsGal

Don, you could be right; I may have transposed the number when typing. I'll have to go look at my laptop in a bit.

Jakkims, as far as I know I have the latest drivers that I can get for everything, but I can go look see. Per Microsoft instructions before I originally installed Windows 10 last year, I went out and located all the newest drivers I could find for this machine. Several of the components are no longer supported, so no new drivers. The company that made my video card was bought out by another. The driver I downloaded from the new company was incompatible but I did find one more from the old company which I installed.

Of course, I could gut my machine and install new hardware. That would be at least the video and sound card, and maybe the controller. Didn't want to spend the money, especially just after buying the laptop. The Ubuntu 16.04 is nice and suits my kind of computing at this point. Anyway, Windows 10 is on the desktop is history. I blew it off rather than going the duel boot root. I had done that once a long time ago. That machine didn't like it (or was it Windows didn't like it). It didn't take too long before it wouldn't boot up with either OS. Of course that could have been a coincidental hard drive failure, but I an not taking any chances now.

Marilyn

my computer is now running the Win 10 anniversary upday. What I have lost is the ability to send page by email, The send link by email goes directly to my WLM program but i need the Send page by email in order to send the stationery that I make to WLM. otherwise I am going to have to give up my stationery groups. and I don't want to do that. I have followed all the instructions for getting it to work but WLM just flashes on the screen then closes.

RAMMEL

Can you use the CLIP tool and paste it into email?
