Still not purchased the W10. Going to have to soon. Maybe if anything was wrong with it they have fixed by now.

I'm here this afternoon using Win-10.  At this point I'm not sure just how I got here but I'm trying and learning.  I'm using a computer that Dave built for my son a few years ago.  Just put in a new hard drive and more memory.  Bought a Win-10 disc and loaded it.  It looks like it is working OK but at this point I don't know how to use it.

I Need -----
A Windows Dummy Book
Other Win-10 Use info

Anyone --- Feel free to fill me in.

Rick just back from 3 heavy IPA beers.  Do not have a dummy book, too dumb to understand.  Hope this will help, I am sending two  screen shots.  I am pleased with Windows 10 but have my machine set up like windows 7.  Two screen shots, one of the page with the programs, but set up another that is more like windows 7.   I have set up shortcuts to my photos etc and use it rather than going to the tabs on windows 10, so in effect still working with windows 7

Hope this helps and get back to me.

Some of these may help; just keep in mind that many of these are backed by Microsoft and should be taken with a shaker, not grains of salt.

I hope to get mine likw Win-7 also.  I have to learn how to accomplish these things.

What do you use for EMAIL?  I tried to set up what W10 offered but didn't receive the mail they sent me.

What Browser?  I like FF

I will now study the images you posted.  More fun than a person should be allowed to have.

Right now the Win-10 puter is down in the "work shop" (basement) so can't just jump back and forth.

I use Gmail and FF as well as Opera.

I disabled Cortana and One Drive because one is just a voice-activated  Bing search engine and the other is poorly rated. Another issue is I have to re-disable my touchpad each time Microsoft has an update.

And yes there are those dummy books

Gmail & FF -- Did/do you just download and install them as you would do in Win-7 or xp?

I will also likely disable Cortana and One Drive.  I can probably dig that procedure out of the net.

I thank all for any help or ideas.

I am using windows 10 mail, took some adjusting but like it.   I still am using Explorer and Google. Only use Windows Defender and it has kept me clean.  Just picked up a Trojan, no damage, and removed.

In the past I have tried the dummy books, but too dumb :)

Rick,
OneDrive is like DropBox. MS gives you 5GB of free cloud storage. I use it for some back-ups and for files that I would like to also access from my phone or iPad, as I have put the OneDrive app on them both. I use it continually and wouldn't be without it. I have been using it for many years since MS first made it an available option under the name of SkyDrive.

angelface555

You can download and install Gmail, FF and the usual such as Dropbox easily. What I don't care for with Onedrive is that it tries to take over, it changes your settings without your approval or authorization which is why I deleted it and why it has poor peer reviews.

An example is my photography program. Onedrive set itself up as the program's storage or backup. I would go back in and reset to Dropbox only to find it later set back to Onedrive. The same issue with my PSP program.

For those who pick Onedrive and don't use another storage or want more than one system, it would probably be fine, but it doesn't play well with others.

MarsGal

I didn't know you could delete OneDrive. I don't like it either. I did try to disable it as much as possible. Do not want ANY of my stuff on the cloud. I don't trust it to be as safe as they claim, and I certainly don't share anything except for the few photos I have uploaded and posted here.

I am having trouble getting used to the Vivaldi browser (Chrome based). I will give it one thing, though, it is faster loading pages than Firefox. I suspect that is because I don't have so many extensions on it. I still like Firefox much better even though it is slower and has gotten a few of those nasty malware programs that don't show up on my various antivirus/malware programs.

If you recall it, maybe you could post how to delete or block/ban ONE DRIVE.

I'm another who doesn't care for CLOUD services. I know it's secure, just like the Credit Bureau (Equifax) but I go with "A Bird In The Hand ......... "

Rick I also avoid the cloud.  Sometime back had my photos there and would pick them up on computer, pad and phone.  I stopped using Icloud.   I put just the photos I want on my phone.   On Windows 10 I never set up one drive so nothing to delete.

I treasure most my photos and family videos, have back up copies on flash drives and external drive.

Have plenty of space on my computer for additions.

angelface555

Click the Unlink OneDrive option on the Settings tab, click OK and close the OneDrive window when it prompts you to reconnect. To complete removal, go to Control Panel > Programs and uninstall OneDrive. You may need to restart your PC for the removal of OneDrive to be completed. Or to fully delete the program; here is more exact information from Lifehacker which is similar to How to Geek.

Well, ---------- I'm pretty much up and running Win-10.  But for some reason I just can't seem to create a valid MS account and their Mail App. I've had trouble with that in the past with Win-7. I'm still working on a program or two that I liked but can't get to run in 10.  But that will resolve in time.  My old Win-xp was dying and getting slower by the week so now things seem fast as lightning  :nanadance:  :excited:  :nanadance:  Now on to learning more.

I upgraded an old puter that Dave built for my son.  Added memory and changed the hard drive.  No sense using an old, questionable, HD on a new installation.

Can anyone shed some light on getting rid of COOKIES?  Does 10 have a way to get rid of them but save those you want?

I use C cleaner to get  rid of all cookies, and then add again the PW I use often.

jackwv

Rick I use Internet Explorer.  I click the tools logo upper right, looks like a gear.   Then go to internet options  pick delete and this list of choices come up.  I usually delete all cookies but looks like the top choice would do what you want.

Firefox uses three bars at the upper left, I assume Chrome has a similar option. Or you could go into your W10 start menu, go down to Windows Administrative tools and use Task Scheduler, disk cleanup, optimize and defragment from that menu.

RAMMEL

Thanks all.
I think I need a break  ???   Brain overload.

Well! Windows just did an upgrade. I had to go in and reset some of the settings. Other than that everything seems to be working okay, EXCEPT, I keep getting a message in notifications that the other drive that used to hold a backup copy (I don't know if it was the Windows 7 that you could go back to or the orginal of Windows 10) doesn't have a visible file in it any longer. That is not stopping the darn notifications from telling me that this folder is full and asks if it should clean it up. It comes up with a window that says there are two files, but with 0 bytes in them and when I finally, in desperation, hit the clean up button, it did, of  course, nothing. I still get the message, even though I have system notifications turned off at this point. GRRRRRRRR!

Anyone have a clue how to get rid of this? Guess I will break down and check Windows forum to see if others are having the problem.

RAMMEL

MarsGal...anyway to track it down and manually uninstall/delete it?

I bought my laptop with Win10 and I've not had any problems...so far....knocking on wood of the desk.

Jane, I use my head to "knock on wood" - works as well as natural wood.

I got the update and no problems.   Windows Defender changed its page but appears all ok.

A year or so ago I went to their online support, then asked for phone help.  They took over my pc while I watched and cleared everything up - no charge!

You might go to this link  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us  go to the virtual agent and believe it might give you phone support if needed.

MarsGal

Oh Joy! Windows sent another update this morning. After installing, my computer went to the main password screen, but after I entered my password/pin I got a message saying Windows (forget which program) wasn't responding. I tried again and ended up with a black screen with only the mouse working. I can't even shut the machine down. The stupid thing just goes into sleep mode and back comes the black screen when I open the laptop lid. I have not been able to get to the battery to pull it. But then, I almost always have trouble with getting to remotes and especially my phone batteries.

The good news is that my BIL just got a new laptop and will let me have his old one. It is an HP, so it and I should get along just fine. I am typing on my HP Desktop which is running Linux (Ubuntu 16.4) right now. The HP has never given me a lick of trouble. The only thing is that is it too old now to work well with the newest Linux programs, or so the Ubuntu pundits are saying.

JeanneP

I am still using the W7. MS. seems to still do some things keeping it clean. I get very few spams show in my Email acct. but just went into spam file and was 976 in there. I just forget to check there. Now does anyone remember how to delete all at one time. I had to do it 10 at a time. They use to clear them every 30 days but don't do it anymore it seems.
JeanneP

RAMMEL

Go to your "Spam" folder.
Highlight the first one.
Scroll to the last one
Hold the Shift key down and select the last one
They all should show as highlighted --- hit Delete

All gone
