I also got a different picture of a cactus on starting up, and then my chosen picture shows up again.  I usually change my desktop view every week.

Hi gang! For the moment I am using the laptop my BIL gave me. It is running Windows 7. The only things I don't care for with this laptop (so far) are that I keep hitting the up arrow instead of the shift for some reason, and the machine runs hot. It is an HP Pavilion Entertainment PC. The screen is larger and not an LCD display. I haven't taken a look at the system specs yet, so I don't know how much memory it has. It has an Intel dual processor and an Nvidia graphics card. It is about the same age as my HP desktop with the Ubuntu on it.

My BIL suggested taking the battery out of the ASUS and then putting it back in. According to him that should force the machine to reset Windows. I haven't found info on the net about that to confirm. I'll be darn if I want to unscrew the whole back and pry the sections apart to get to the battery. You would think that the "hatch" on the back would provide easy access to the battery compartment, but there appears to be no way to open it. My sister found a YouTube DIY for taking the thing apart.

I had a lot of trouble with my HP Pavilion Laptop when I first got it. It went back 3 times and they couldn't fix it. So I did it myself. I didn't want to mess up their warranty .  That's why it went back.  Anyway, ------- Every time I called their Tech Support they started with the remove the battery routing. So is seems like a likely place to start when chasing a problem. What model is yours?

Rammel. Yes. I delete that way but they just come up 10 at a time. I select. Hit the All . I was thinking there was a way one time could do the lot. Like today did show 179 spam. So that takes time.  I should check more. Last time I had over 700. not checked for ages.

Just want to drop a note that I may be a bit scarce for a week or so.

Rammel, the ASUS is only two years old, if that. I am going to take it and the HP Pavillion laptop from my BIL up to the local computer repair store (Alliance) to see what they can do with the dead one, and see if I can get a processor upgrade for this HP. It is soooooo slow. I checked the manufacture date on it and it is actually a year older than my desktop HP. For some reason I lost the ability to logon here with the desktop (using Ubuntu 16.04), haven't figured out why yet.

This has not been a fun past few days between the computers, one of George's cats (which I feed when he is away) died, the smoke detectors decided to go off for no apparent reason this morning and I got overcharged at the grocery store today.

 ;D   ;D

I had to reset my password here because, for some reason it stopped letting me log on. I think I might have set a password manager wrong that I had on Firefox. I couldn't check because I have since removed that extension.

I am testing out the Chromium browser on my desktop. It seems a bit faster than Firefox. George seems to think it is safer these days than Firefox.

The first thing on my agenda today will be to mow the front lawn. It looks like we will be getting a few more days of rain after today. Next, my laptops are going up to Alliance to see what they can do. I might wait until tomorrow to do that.

Update:

ASUS computer is up at the repair store. They are saying 3-5 days to even look at it.

Chromium on the Ubuntu desktop is a bit faster that Firefox. And, so far, am not having any problems with websites. But, I haven't "traveled" much yet.

I tried to download Chromium for Windows on the Windows 7 laptop, but Avast blocked it. The machine set the file to Avast for testing and it came back clean, but I still get that message and it still won't let me install it. I haven't figured out how to circumvent Avast short of installing it yet. I did get the machine to speed up after I realized that I only had updated software programs and still needed to update hardware. What I like about Windows 7 over 10 is that I feel like I have more control over my machine. Right now it is getting a boot scan.

I haven't decided whether to upgrade to Windows 10 on the HP laptop, leave it on Windows 7,  or go to Ubuntu. Some of that decision depends on whether or not Alliance can resurrect my ASUS. After talking with the tech, it looks like it will not be worth trying to put in a new motherboard on the HP.

For those having issues with the latest Windows 10 update, this link may be of interest.
Apparently there may be a conflict with computers running AVAST.

Hi, Donklan, et. al.

Yes, I've heard that Don; Avast, of course, claims otherwise. I had Avast installed.

The verdict at Alliance is that my computer "hung up" on something. The tech was able to get into safe mode and recover it, the bill will be almost $50. I won't be able to pick it up until tomorrow as I am expecting company today.

$50 is a decent charge.
Most places around here charge $75 to $100 just to set it on their counter.

Interesting, Don. There was no charge for looking at my machine, only if for what he fixes. I told him to go ahead and "tune-it up" just so he could charge something for his time.

Uh, oh! Lucy is here staring at me. I just looked at the time. Seems it is feeding time.

It looks like Data Information Center is a legit site. I never heard of them before.

Other oddities this week, I got an email from a business site last week and  started to dump it to the spam folder without looking at it. They claimed my invoice was ready to view. What invoice? It showed up soon after I got a link to my invoice for some plumbing work I just had done. I called SECCO, who did the work, and asked if they were associated with this business group. Low and behold, SECCO just began a relationship with it (of course I forgot the name just now) for their scheduling and billing. Then, there is my sister who got an email supposedly from my best friend asking her to like or whatever you do for his LinkedIn page. George, it turns out has a LinkedIn account, but he did not send anyone a request to friend (or whatever they called it on that site) him. Wasn't LinkedIn hacked a month or so ago?

It may be a legitimate site, MarsGal, but the viewers rated it as average or two to three points out of five altogether. If you didn't first ask for or about it then to me, its spam.

There are so many malware sites, ransom sites, and spamware that no one can keep up with it all or even to say confidently that there is none on your computer. We can only keep up with our security and antivirus updates and stay educated about what is going on or even the ranking of our antivirus against others.

A good example is with this net neutrality where business rules. If outfits have to pay different providers to be allowed on their sites or if you as a customer has to pay a higher premium for full and easy access to a site, which is what this new rule means, then what is to say an antivirus is allowed free range or if a better, antivirus program, different provider info or a news site isn't available to you because they haven't pay a fee to be shown by your internet supplier?

The previous administration had ruled against this and the present administration repealed that as unnecessary. Which is why the Net Neutrality is now in effect.

For some reason I was not getting emails re posts in this discussion.  Reading and catching up, have not received any email from data center.

Tough staying safe with weird telephone calls and emails.  Funny, yesterday morning I received an email from my electric company with notice, "Service Outage"   Thought that was weird was having no trouble and deleted it.   10 minutes later a truck pulled up to the pole in front of my home.  I went out and the worker said there was a reported outage, but we were fine.  A neighbor had problems inside her home, that had to be addressed by an electrician.   Curious, I went into my trash file and opened the email.  It had my address for the pole and said it was a temp. outage.

My sister sent me this that explains it better that big business rules. From the news.

"Net neutrality

It's over folks. The repeal of net neutrality officially kicks in today. The FCC voted along party lines in December to repeal the Obama-era rules, which were intended to stop internet providers from blocking, speeding up or slowing down access to specific online services. A repeal means a provider can play favorites. For example, a provider like Comcast could potentially allow its own video content to load faster than competing content on a service like, say, Vimeo. Alternatively, it could force Vimeo to pay more to get its content into the Internet's fast lane. So will you notice any changes today? Probably not. Lots of litigation needs to work its way through the courts, and lawmakers are weighing in too, so it may be awhile before things settle down."

donklan, Thanks for the link re: updates for windows 10

Microsoft automatic update wiped out my computer. My tech says he has been doing a booming business because of this problem.

To give you a laugh: I sent a snail mail to Microsoft CEO claiming Elder abuse by Microsoft. I listed all the things that happened and I sent him the bill-- $139-- That got me back in almost business. I am tired of not having control of my computer. Theft is what it is.

I have been coming into Senior and Friends since Senior Net went kerfunk. But Microsoft wiped out my entry here- so I am stumbling about trying to find my way.

I will quit complaining! Thanks for listening tho!

Diglady, that is why I am using Ubuntu on my desktop instead of Windows. Linux is not as "easy" as Windows because you occasionally have to do a little programming if you want a nicer interface/additional features and the like. Most of the time you don't. Often the program/app sites will have instructions with the exact coding to use to add a program or "extension" to a program or a nicer interface.

Linux distributions are easy to install and update and they are surprisingly free (but not entirely) of malware and viruses unless you are using WINE which is an interface to run Windows programs on your Linux machine. Then you would definitely need an additional antivirus program. Linux does come with an effective anti-virus program called Clam, BTW, but most antiviruses seem to focus on Windows programming.

However, I am fond of a few programs that just are not available in Linux, hence one of the machines still using Windows.

I wonder if you will actually get a reply, DigLady, to your letter.  I like your thinking there. I thought about doing that, but haven't. The next time Microsoft screws up my machine, I plan on going Linux all the way. Well, that might not work so well eventually because Microsoft is trying to switch to a Linux base programming. They just bought Github, a big site for open source software developers and such. There is a rumor, unconfirmed I think, that Microsoft is also looking to acquire Ubuntu.
