I need to find out where I can get around having to put in a password everytime I logon to my laptop.  Nobody else here uses it, and it's a nuisance.

Jane,
This is probably what you need. It works for me.

Password. If you are using Windows 10 and have to sign in when your computer starts you can bypass this as follows:-
   1. Press the Windows key and R together
   2. in the box type netplwiz
   3. select OK or Enter
   4. Highlight your user account
   5. Uncheck the box next to “Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer”
   6. Click Apply
   7. Type in your password
   8. Click OK
Restart computer

Jakki.

THANKS, JAKKI!   It worked beautifully.

Will put that tip on my list from when go on W10

Not seen you on for awhile. Hope you had good summer.

Jackki thanks I had done that a while back, hate having to insert the password.  For some reason it reverted back and for a week I was inserting the password and trying to remember how to avoid doing so.  Now back in business without the password.

Today when I turned on Win-10, before I logged on, I got a picture of a long "Hall" created with large arches down both sides, circles above.  Does anyone know where this is?  Did others get it also?
It's the WINDMILLS

I had a picture of the Trinity College Library...which looks more like a European cathedrale...with long arches, etc.  It was on BING.

Check out BING and see if you see it there in their photos.

I dislike Bing and I've tried to remove it, but it just won't stay gone.

RAMMEL

I opened the Bing page and it looked like a honey comb.
I also don't use Bing.

I don't like Bing and don't use it.  But I do get different pictures every few times I turn on my computer.  I don't recall getting the one Rick showed.  My screen shows a Greek lake today but at the upper right corner of the picture it tells where the picture is with "Do You Like It?".  They are fantastic scenes and I do like them and I could skip the choice things - but I don't.

Bing is Microsoft's in-house search engine and Cortana is simply Bing given a voice. If you use Microsoft you can't delete it. However, if you use FireFox, Chrome or any browser other than Internet Explorer or Edge; you can go into the browser's settings, go to search engines and delete Bing and others you don't use that are taking up space.

MarsGal

I didn't see the pix. Maybe Microsoft changed some of the offered pix. I have my lock screen (in Settings/personalization/lock screen) set for one picture, which I change periodically, rather than for slideshow. Also, I have the "Get facts, tips,,,", etc. turned off so I don't get Windows tips and such and no Cortona on the lock screen.

jane

Rick, I got the honeycombs, too.

I just click Bing off...just don't like it.  I have tried to delete it, Patricia, and just have google...with no success.

And, I have 3 browsers on my laptop, but I do like Chrome, so just click Bing off.  :idiot2:

jane

Thanks, Jack.  I only use IE for Pogo games, and, with those directions, I can at least dump bing there.

wjoan

I had that also Rick.

Here is a browser setting for using Google with Internet Explorer Nine. You can also put any search engine on the list besides Google if you prefer as long as it is on the list shown.

    Open Internet Explorer.
In the top right corner of the browser, click the Tools icon.
    Click Internet options.
In the General tab, find the "Search" section and click Settings.
    Select Google.
    Click Set as default.
    Click Close.

Changing Chrome's search settings

How to Change Your Default Search Engine in Chrome's Omnibox

Open Chrome and click the wrench icon in the top right corner of the screen.
Choose Settings from the drop-down menu and click Manage Search Engines under the Search heading.
Select the search engine you want to use from the onscreen list and click make default.

For FireFox,
Here are three methods for changing it so that, each time you search for something in the address bar, another search engine responds to your query instead of Google:

1. Change the default search engine in Mozilla Firefox to Bing, Yahoo!, or DuckDuckGo

Mozilla Firefox makes it easy to change the default search engine, if you want to switch to Bing, Yahoo!, DuckDuckGo, Wikipedia, Twitter or Amazon.com. If the search engine that you want is in this list, then follow the instructions in this section.
First, open Mozilla Firefox and click or tap the button in the shape of three lines, that is shown on the top-right corner. This button is named “Open Menu.” In the menu that is displayed, choose Options.

The Options tab is shown. On the left, click or tap Search. Next, look for the “Default Search Engine” section, and click on the drop-down list shown.

Close the Options tab and you are done. Mozilla Firefox now uses the search engine that you selected instead of Google.

Thanks, Patricia....I've printed that out.  It makes following directions easier for this old lady.

The President has the authority to send unblockable text messages to nearly every cell phone in the US, and a test of this system is scheduled for 2:18 p.m. Eastern time on October 3, 2018. But even though technically you can’t opt out, there are a few things you can try.

First, let’s talk about how unblockable these really are: the Wireless Emergency Alert system was established in a 2006 law, and became fully operational in 2012. The original law says that wireless carriers can allow their customers to block emergency alerts, except the Presidential ones.

The Presidential alerts are meant for situations of national importance: if a nuke were headed our way, for example, or some other serious, nationwide news. It’s not meant as an alternate outlet for petty, insulting tweets, and the message has to go through FEMAâ€"it’s not sent directly from the President’s phone.
Try turning off all emergency alerts (this probably won’t work)

This shouldn’t work, but October 3 is your chance to figure out whether it actually does. A Presidential alert has never been sent before, so this is untested territory.

Your phone should have a setting to let you turn off emergency alerts. This includes severe weather alerts (like tornado warnings) and AMBER alerts (the ones that ask you to keep an eye out for abducted children).

On iPhone, go to Settings, then Notifications, and then scroll to the bottom to see government alerts. There are switches to turn off AMBER alerts and “Emergency alerts.”

On most Android phones, go to Settings, and then Sound, and then Emergency Alerts. On Samsung devices, you’ll find options for emergency alerts in your Messages app settings instead.

If you lucked out, and it turns out your phone does block the Presidential message, enjoy the peace while it lasts. The whole point of the test is to find out if the system works as designed, so your carrier or your phone’s manufacturer will have to fix the problem.
Enjoy a 30-minute break from your phone

This won’t block alerts in an emergency, but if you’d like to avoid the test’s mass phone-blaring at 2:18 p.m. (11:18 a.m. on the west coast), turn off your phone or set it to airplane mode until 2:48.

That’s because each alert has its own “alert period” in which the alert, like a bird that keeps bonking against your window, will try frantically to reach you. If you’re on a call, you’ll get the alert when you hang up. If your phone was off, you’ll get the alert as soon as you turn it back on.

But after the alert period has expired, that frantic little bird goes away. FEMA says the October test will use an alert period of “approximately 30 minutes.”
At least put it on silent

Emergency alerts come with a “tone” that is different from your usual notification ding. In practice, this tone is a blaring alarm that scares you half to death.

But at least you can silence it. FEMA notes that “Consumers should receive a visual message if their phone is on silent.” So you can’t block the president’s text, but you can silence it, at least.

If you’d like to share your thoughts on this test, FEMA invites the public to send feedback (ideally about whether you received the alert, but hey, you can send what you like) to FEMA-National-Test@fema.dhs.gov.

MarsGal

Patricia, I don't know if my phone even has an emergency alert setting. It isn't a smartphone, but does have a text feature that I have never used. I've had it since 2003. Most of the time it is off. I originally got it in case of an emergency or car breakdown when I was working. I would often have to do overtime, so it wasn't unusual for me to get home at 2am or later.

angelface555

I suggest at least put it on silence for the approximate thirty minutes. You'll still have text but not the alert sounds for those minutes.

RAMMEL

Wouldn't you want to know if it works?

angelface555

If it works the text will be there. I have had other alerts so I know they work on my cells. However, having thirty minutes of two cells blaring and bleeping is not going to be conducive to my mental health...

I just today, found out that my email address was among thousands hacked in an Adobe breach in October 2013. That means addresses, passwords and anything else possibly accessed through my email by whatever software was used in that huge hack! While at this date, a lot has changed and I have different email antiviruses, regular and malware, (separate companies); I'm still angry. So very many use Adobe photo and other products and the company never publicly announced the breach!?!

Mary Ann

Patricia, that was five years ago!!!  I'd be angry too.

FYI, it wasn't Adobe but daily emails that announced through FireFox. I believe those types of breaches involving public records should be made public as soon as possible. While it's too late now, who knows what info was then on my email base, and how it might have affected others?

"Adobe Photo

Breach date: October 4, 2013
Compromised accounts:152,445,165
Compromised data: Email addresses, Password hints, Passwords, Usernames"

On that same note, for those still on Facebook, it was just announced they had a complete breach of over fifty million FB accounts recently.

Presidential Alert is today, Wednesday 2:18 and 2:20 Eastern time in the US,  No action required.

jane

Thanks for the reminder, Jack.  Cellphones will be dingalinging everywhere🤓

Mary Ann

Not mine because I have a TracFone that is turned off in my purse.

If they hit the landlines, I'm a dead duck!
