Title: Tablets, Pads, Smart Phones
Post by: RAMMEL on March 29, 2016, 11:27:14 PM
A place to discuss Tablets, Pads, Smart Phones, and whatever devices we use.

I'm not an expert here but I'm sure there is someone that will jump in and help.

HELLO THERE, good to find this topic.  I have a Smart Prime cell phone and would love advice at taking photos with my rather shaky hands.  Need to get started but lack confidence.  Actually any advice re my phone would be helpful, especially negotiating around its various screens and learning which apps you are finding helpful, regards from Mary in Downunder New Zealand

maryde  I have used Hyperlapse, a free app on my iPhone.   Have used it even to steady video taken in a moving car.  You might check for apps.   Obviously a tripod or small mini pod helps but I never use.   Here is an interesting link on how you might steady your hands for the shot.

Maryde   ---   It would help us to help you if you told us the make and model of the device you want help with.

I believe some cell phones have the ability to "steady" an image. Just an option to select.

Good to hear from you all.  Hi to jane.

jackwv, thanks for that helpful link.  Isn't she flexible, I'm jealous.   Great balance too.  I will have to practice, really good advice.  I crossed my fingers that its compatible and downloaded Hyperlapse.  Have to go out now but will check it over later.

RAMMEL of course, I should have said the model, thanks. The name of my phone is Vodafone Smart Prime 6, its an Android version 5.0.2.  I bought it last year so its not the latest but it works well so far and I want to explore its capabilities.

The iOS. 9.3 downloaded fine to my Ipad and I chose not to put a passcode in.  My husband's 9.3 downloaded and we again chose no passcode, BUT the opening screen insists we put in the passcode.  Since we don't have one, we're locked out.  I've called Support, got a lovely woman and we had to hook the IPAD up to my laptop with the charging cord and connect to Itunes and the Ipad will be wiped, a new 9.3 installed and then the Ipad restored.

It's doing all that now, and Apple is to call me back in an hour.

Any news on the IPhone 7?

Will it be as other years a September launch.  Though thy don't come in the UK phone shops until late October and later still on the Isle of Man.

Kelly,

I don't usually keep up on Apple stuff. I'm more into PC's and their associated stuff, and electronics, electrics, mechanics.  I think Apple originally made their products for users, not hobbyists. That scared some away.

You can print from an iPad but you have to have a suitable printer. I bought a printer that was marketed as one that would print from an iPad but I found out (too late) that it can only print photos from an iPad - nothing else. So if you are going to buy a suitable printer make sure that it will be able to print everything that you want.

I'd like to know if we can show a screen image to our group members during talking over Skype on our iPads.

Hi Jakkims
I think I said yesterday that to print from a smartphone or IPad as I do you, then you need an air printer.  And wireless as well.

I can print documents as well.

Printing?  Trouble printing?

You can usually just send it (the image) to another device that you know how to print from.

Hi Kelly, I also use a MacBook Pro Retina and iPad mini (2013 version, a bit old).  Do you use Skype? I'm interested in "group Skype" and "image sharing on Skype screen".  I'd like to know how we can practice these two ways on iPad devices.  On computers we can do both.

I will read through that and see what can do . For some reason Apple would not accept my Password and so have decided to change a few of them this morning. I pad needs a good cleaning up. I have messed up a few things on it. Will just close it down .empty history, cache and enter with a fresh start some sites I have been in for a long time.

Should take off all the games etc.

Does anyone know how to delete lot of the books that either have read or will never read?

Hi JeaaneP
Try pressing the home button on your IPad, the one at the base of your screen.

And the pages you have viewed on the Internet will appear, all you do is 'swipe' the pages on the screen.

if there is a lot of 'pages' they can slow down the IPad and decrease battery life.

When I press the home button, I get Siri.  Are these open pages the same ones that show a ross the top of the IPAD and I can X out of?

Edit:  I can't seem to get beyond Siri...I've pressed twice and she just keeps coming up. I'll close down and see if that helps.   :knuppel2:

You asked -
QuoteDoes anyone know how to delete lot of the books that either have read or will never read?

It may vary depending on where you get your books from, but I get most of mine from Amazon on the Kindle App and when I want to delete one I just press and hold on the picture of the book in my Kindle library list on the iPad and that gives me the option to 'Remove from Device'. I click that and the book is no longer stored on the iPad but remains on the book list and is still available at Amazon to download again if I want it. If I am sure I will never want it again I log into my Amazon account and scroll down to 'Manage your content and devices' and the book can be permanently deleted from there and will no longer show on the iPad library list.

Hi Jane
Siri switches on an IPhone or IPad when you press the home button once and hold it down at the same time.

Tapping the home button quickly twice brings the internet pages we look at up.  I swipe them off the screen.

I never delete books from the source....amazon or B &N.  I buy only fiction and from my favorite authors, and I re-read many of them over time.  I've   had to deregister my Kindle and Ipad from Amazon, which removes all the books you've purchased, but they're still at Amazon, if you should wish to re-read one again.

I had to deregister because of a bad download.

Jane.  Some of the books that one gets for free are not worth reading. Even some one pays for.  I do want to keep the one that cost more than 2.95 and I know will read again. I am not into spending the $12 that some books cost.  I can still get those at the library on loan.
I did find a way of deleting.
On the Ipad  I go to All Books list Books picture to left you tap them and the DELETE comes over on the right so just slide over to left and they go.

Now on the Amazon Fire. go to books. Tap book and it will  say remove

from home or from Device.

All so easy. Now I sent the other Tablet from Google back. It was a little larger  but I didn't like it as well as the Amazon Fire.  Its all I need. With having the desktop. Ipad and Fire I was getting to confused by what did what.  Just not trying any of the other.  Brain will not handle them all.

I just use comcast. takes care of my Desktop, WiFi for my Amazon Fire tablet, Ipad.  Mobile phones I think are on their own. I use a Consumer Cell for Mobile. I have Comcast  for TV also. Still have a home line phone on ATT. Could do without it as none of the above works through them. it is just that I have had the same home line number for 45 years and would be a problem letting people know I don't have it anymore. Specially the Family and Friends in UK and France.

Delphine....I think it depends on what's available in your area.  Jeanne mentions Comcast, but that's not an option where I live.  I don't think T-mobile is either or Sprint and AT&T wireless doesn't work well here.  Maybe your neighbors could give you some suggestions of what the options are where you are.

Now there is something on can buy that will pick up WiFi for your tablet no matter where you use it.  I saw a man using his in the Laundromat. Looks like a little black box. See a few others since. Don't know if it is a pay by month thing or you buy it. They said it cost $49.95 so I would say you own it. Ask like Best Buys or place like that. In my town no matter where you are anymore can get WiFi. Even the parks and all around town. They are attached to the Traffic lights I believe. All the stores, restaurants. Offices you can get on WiFi.

Jack.  I had one man on my street that just paid his Comcast for TV and had a modem. Then he just let about 8 other people log onto his account for their WiFi. Charged $10 a month. Comcast say can't stop people from doing that as they have nothing to do with WiFi. With it being a university town then on campus  many student do the same thing. All have to use the same Password but he would change it every month so that if they didn't pay then they would not be on it.  Most of the people used WiFi for their gaming machines and things they say.

Some businesses have Wifi access that they make available to anyone.  You just have to be within range.  An acquaintance of mine lives next to a pizza shop and they gave him their access code.  A medical building I go to has many Wifi sites, but they all need an access code.

Something to think about. From ZoneAlarm

MOBILE THREATS HAVE GROWN ALMOST 300% IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS. ARE YOU PROTECTING YOUR MOBILE LIFE?

How often do you look at your smartphone each day? Do you check it 30 times a day? How about 40-55 times a day? Whether you check your mobile a (relative) few times a day or a lot, one thing is glaringly clear - we rely on those little things a lot. Actually, we rely on them a ton. In a recent study by Informate Mobile Intelligence revealed that the average American spends 4.7 hours looking at or checking his or her phone. That's one fifth of your day spent looking at an inanimate, soul-less machine.

Let’s check in with reality. Sure, the figure sounds crazy, but when you think about all the things we use our mobile devices for, it starts to make a bit more sense. Our mobile devices really do make lots of the other little gadgets in our lives obsolete. Who needs alarm clocks, cameras or watches when you have a smartphone that does it all?

And just think about all the apps we have that save us tons of time. Apps make banking, finding information on the closest beach and even ordering a pizza to right where you have pitched your sun umbrella happen in seconds, as opposed to the minutes it took to accomplish the same task on the internet or using an old-school phone.
Who can remember a time when you had to go home to check an email?! Our mobiles are what keep us in the loop at all times. And surely this is a good thing, right?

It sure would seem that all this connectivity and ease-of-use is great. But from a security standpoint, mobile has the potential to be a disaster.
Our ever-present smartphones (at last check, 47% of Americans admit to taking them along while in the bathroom) are a 6X8 storehouse of virtually all of our information. These tiny devices hold more information than the most powerful laptops did back in 2013. They contain our financial information, including credit card information, DOB and SSN’s, emails (often times including work-related emails) website login and password information, and much, much more. These little things know the in’s and out’s of our lives almost better than we do.

It’s all about our habits
There are lots of foolhardy habits that people do on a daily basis regarding their mobile devices that could end up costing them dearly in the end. These behaviors include:
• Using weak passwords
• Opening suspicious links in emails
• Accepting all “friend” requests
• Using unsecured public Wi-Fi networks to surf and shop
• Ignoring/delaying software updates
Then there are plenty of apps that employ sweeping permission policies, feeding lots of unnecessary information back to the app developers and third parties to be used to essentially spy on you and your mobile habits. All too common are rogue apps pretending to be legit but really only exist to collect data and even plant malware on devices. Other apps, though not malicious in nature, contain unintentional critical vulnerabilities that put your mobile and your data at risk, all the same.

Our utter reliance upon these little devices, coupled with our really bad practices and all the dangers apps can present make it no big surprise that the incidents of mobile threats have grown almost 300% in the last five years. And now that basically the whole world has been “mobilized”, things are only going to get worse. Thanks to services like Apple Pay and Samsung Pay and in no small part due to the Internet of things, mobile attacks are poised to increase in their technique and scope.

ZoneAlarm and many other programs present complete peace of mind
All these potential pitfalls should at least cause you to evaluate your mobile habits to see where you can do a better job at protecting what’s yours. Security programs help you protect your device from rogue apps and apps that request too much information; check security levels of surrounding Wi-Fi networks and guard your communications from being intercepted.

It’s total peace of mind, wherever life takes you.

No matter how tempting it may be, don’t take your mobile’s security for granted. Regardless of how entrenched you are in this already-mobile world

Now I have use Consumer Cell for a long time. Have their newest phone that is a flip top. they do have one like the Iphone. I don't need it.  Only thing is that I wish they had where did not need to go from 200 min. and next up is 1000. I didn't have quite enough with the 200 but never use more that 300. Yet you loose the min. each month if you dont use them. I am going to try now to use it for calls to U.K and to Canada.  It uses your minutes with a addition 4 cents a minute charge. That pretty good. Will see how it works out.

Jack.  I think if one opens each one up at a time. Then puts the X on and delete maybe that will work. So many though. I will try it . Seems like they may still show up on the Purchased.  They haven't seemed to figure out once people who design them can get them on  but Apple don't know how to take them off.
Still pouring and so will play a little more.
Weeds have taken over at the back of my lot. Going to try spraying. Hard for you with Jessie in the yard.  I am laying down a lot of the 15 inch square blocks at the back. Get rid of where the weeds are bad.

Jack. That YouTube Video shows about what the IPad Book Tells you to do.
I will put my IPad here by Desktop and play it and see.
Few people saying on it that didn't work for them.  Will see if I have the special TOUCH...

I've just touched on those I wanted to delete and they wiggle and the little X comes up and I click on it and it's gone.  I don't bother to look at whatever's been "purchased" if I want it gone.

Some can't be deleted that Apple wants there.  But those you buy and download should be deletable.

I was playing with 6 or so photo apps and it cluttered up the screen.  Was able to combine them dragging them one to another and then named it Photo apps.  Did not delete, most are free but now take up no space and I may try to use again, but all could have been deleted.

I titled another  "Extras"   and have tips, podcasts, game center, ibooks, calender, reminder, notes, video.   Seldom use but they are not taking up space on the screen.

Seldom use the pad, but very handy at times.  I spend most of my time on windows 10.

I always thought that Apple were very good when you called them.  Having problem with my IPad and the Account with Them.  Held on for 45 min. last night and then when i got some young lady on was another 90 min. Got no place with her.  She was just reading from a Manuel and kept loosing the place. Was worse than if India and she was Tennessee.  Finely she said would have to get someone else. and then she lost me on the phone. Kept saying. Its your WIFi  that is not working. Yet I kept saying but it is Just my problem of not being able to get onto Apple to buy Books or use I tunes. Was trying to get a new App.  If It was my Wi Fi i could not be sitting using the Internet on the IPad right now. Finely I give up. Will see if I can find the Man at Best Buys who knows Apple.  I just need to Get a new Pass Word now in order to get into The Apps store.  She found were they have my CCard number and my Comcast acct. but had now idea how to change my Password. I just need all the setting done over. Been a long time.

Apple sales are of 27% this year . Better start getting better service.

The text is so small  on my iPad. I have moved it up to the highest but it just will not change. If I do it with 2 finger on screen it just stays until I type something but goes back small when I send.

The November 2016 issue of "Consumer Reports" has a great 14 page article on "How to Protect Your Privacy". (CR has a "new look" so it may be hard for you to find.)  If you don't subscribe, pick up a copy at your library.  There are some steps in there that I would love to try, but am so unsure about fiddling with various "settings" on my computer, laptop, wifi and even my SmartTV.  Article is well worth reading!

You need to set the size you want in Settings if you want it to stay.

On my iPAD mini it's:

Settings/Display & Brightness/Text Size   and set the slider at the size you want.

I spend most of my time on Windows 10, but with the Ipad air I would occasionally type and email etc.   I was interested in a Bluetooth keyboard and stopped at an Apple Store in Pittsburgh (sorry so far from home)   I picked up a Logitech keyboard and found I can also use on my phone.  When paired with a device the on screen keyboard disappears but comes back up if you remove the Bluetooth keyboard.   Giving a good video on youtube, a bit long but really shows the unit well.

Jane.  Now that is what I did. Put the slider almost as high as it goes. Still wont stay. I shows Green. Even Bold and shows it OK there but not in the Forums. Still small.

Jack. Now I bought the key board for my IPad when I first bought it.  Been in a drawer for ages. Think I put it on twice.  I usually write long E-M and so use my Desktop for them.  If just a quick one liner if I am on IPad. I can use the drop down

Candy. I don't think I would delete the Itunes off your IPad.  I don't use it a lot but have needed it on there. I was thinking it came installed when new. Be hard to get it off if it did.  It does come up once in awhile for you to update. I don't. I  just know it doesn't come up again for awhile once you close down the IPad.

Every body seems to want you to update their things anymore. I let IPad do theirs but don't bother with the others.  It is even worse on the Desktop

I don't know what happened but my desktop, ipad, tablet all messed up when trying to use passwords.  I had gotten them in such a mess as I had to change my password. All are on Comcast as my server but  ended where all 3 had different Passwords from having to change them.  Couldn't get into Apple and order a app.
Messed with them for hours yesterday. Now today I think I have them all back and using the same Password on the all.  Hate it that they will not let you use a PW if has been used in past year. Going to try to get a  more simple way to remember all the PW we now have to have in our heads. Will have to have them for everything one day.

I assume you've put in your Network and the network/router/modem password so your tablet can connect to your wireless?

When you go to another network, you have to put in the network and password, if there is one, just like you do at home.

[If you're trying to connect with cellular data, somebody else will need to help you.  My IPAD is only wireless and not a cellular one as I didn't want to have to pay extra for a cellular data connection.]

I had a friend who forgot they have to connect the device, just like a computer, to the internet by cable, or in the case of wireless, with the settings on the tablet or computer. She thought the tablet would somehow magically connect.  That would not be a good thing, obviously, since anyone could then connect to your wifi.

I don't know what kind of tablet you have, but my Ipad mini connects to whatever wifi...at home, or on a connection away from home, and is as fast as my laptop.

Jane.  I now use a desktop, Ipad. Amazon Fire Tablet and the new tablet I bought at christmas. .I just turned them on when I plugged them in as new. I use Comcast and so all wired up for WiFi.  Did notice the other day that someone tried using their IPad in my house.  Could use for about 5 min. and then that was it. I don't give out my number.  Seems like the Iphone  people use in here work fine
Problem in this town at one time as people were letting to many use their WIFI number.  C/U now 94% all wired up for WiFI. Not many places where you cant get in. Can just sit in car at traffic lights, Parks anywhere and get on.
Title: Re: Tablets, Pads, Smart Phones
Post by: jane on January 27, 2017, 07:34:27 PM
That's fine for unsecured wifi, Jeanne.  If your wireless is secured, then you have to put in the network name and the password.  With the large number of unsecured wifi in your area, your equipment may be connecting to that easily....no password required.

In this condo complex, there used to be condos that had unsecured networks, and the equipment would find that and connect.  I don't want that.  I want my network secured since I check my credit cards and pay bills online, etc.

For that, or, for example, in a motel, you need to get the network name and the password to be on that network.

When our family comes here to S. Texas, they need the network and the password to connect their phones, their ipads and their tablets for the reasons I've given above.  The network in our condo is secured/

Jane.  Yes. Mine is Secured in the House.  Only other place I have used my Ipad of Tablet is the Library and the big Medical centre.  I think they are secured.

People would be a little crazy if they used their IPad doing such as banking or paying bills while in a public place such as McDonalds or on the Streets. I just don't have any financials on any of mine.  I still like to keep a Ledger and do financial the way I did working.
Did catch one big mistake this Dec.  My Min. Deduction has to be taken out of a Annuity. Each Dec. Had it for years and they never suppose to take tax out of it. I got the amount of what they show Deducting and also got my Bank Statement showing what my Bank received into my Money Market.  Different Figures by over $200. Now they have to take care of that error. Says will send me a check for the Difference. Over the years surprising what mistakes are taken . I had a $30  thousand dollar one a few years ago. Between my bank and Stock trading. Took them over a month to take care of this one.  It was in my favour but they then wanted to take the Interest that the money earned in that month.  No way.
I love doing accounting. (Job for 30 years).  I can find a mistake of a dime.

I agree that the calls to our cell phones have increased dramatically since the first of the year.  We do as Jack does...if we don't recognize the number and it's therefore not in our Contacts, we don't answer and if important, they'll leave a message.  We do the same thing at home on our landline... let it go to answering machine.  I'm having a hard time getting my husband to do that.  He wants to answer any call that comes in.  I think I'm slowly getting through to him.  His cell phone isn't a smartphone and he pays for each call....$0.25 per call outside our home area...so I'm explaining how much those calls are costing him that he answers.

Candy. Look in another place on it for your Security System App. It could have moved.

My IPad is giving me a problem at the moment. Will not accept my Password to get into Mail.  it must be in right someplace because it is listed when buy books and the accept my Credit card.  Use the same address and Password on my desktop and its O.K.  Not in the mood to mess with it today

I seem to have a problem with my IPad at the moment.  Tried doing it 3 times but it just will not forward photo.  I usually have been able to take the picture. Find the one I want to send to daughter. click it. go to drop down that shows places to forward and I choose EMail. brings up here E-M address. I hit send but nothing happens. Does not show up being Sent. I go into my E-M program and does not show any sent and she doesn't receive any.
Has worked in the past. I don't use it than much. I don't seem to use my IPad that much anymore but I do like it for Selfi's.

Maybe should take it to the library see if anyone is there to help.

JeanneP and CC, I have used the camera on my Ipad air only a few times, seldom carry it, but use my camera or the IPhone.   I just took a photo, then went to photos, selected it and no problem sending it to my self.  I then opened the Email and it was there to again be saved if I wanted it.

I will often check the IPhone the same way, just send an email to myself.  Believe the pad takes decent photos.

CC you can do the same to test the pad, take a photo, it goes into your photos and when you open it on the upper right you will see a box with an arrow.  Click the box and it gives you choices.

"Can't find server" So I lose the message. No arrow on to just go back a post.

I need to get onto Comcast anyway as my Wi Fi is now slow like the desktop.  The are now trying to sell their New Phone service. Called twice on phone to me and sent at least 2 letters. JeanneLee.  Would appreciate a new discussion.  HOW TO POST PHOTOS IN A DISCUSSION.

Hate to clutter up other discussions.  My earlier post also addressed both size and kb, but for those looking into the discussion the heading should  advise your limits.   Also if the gallery still works someone might include instructions.

As for safety agree all we do is now at risk.  I have used Shrinkpicture.com for years and have often checked for safety.  It appears they are safe and you do not give them info to log in.  Gave up on Photobucket and they kept your photos.

Hal...

On my Ipad mini, I

1. click on Safari...my browser there.

2. Put the S&F address in the top bar, just like on a computer.   seniorsandfriends.org

3. Choose my discussion. Read to the end.

4. Click REPLY and tap my finger in the open text box.  When I do that the keyboard appears on my screen.  I type in what I want.

5. Click POST and it appears....just like on a computer.

I don't have a clue on an iphone as I don't have one.  I don't attempt on my android smartphone. It's all too small for me to do comfortably.

With Xfinity I watch one on my tv and the other on the pad.  Posting a shot of the form that came with the pad, and also there are a number of youtubes that explain.  A good one is.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jYwDyJ2KleQ

If it doesn’t show any more updates, your Ipad may not be able to download them.  I get the updates there in settings, too.

Ckick check for updates again, maybe, and see if you’re as up to date as you can be.

Earlier this week we reported that the newly released iOS 9.3 update was bricking older iOS devices, including the iPad 2. Now, Apple has confirmed that there are issues with the iOS 9.3 update for older iOS devices and that it is pulling the update for select devices.
My IPad will not go past 9.3.5 update is it because 5 years old?

Looks like it is now to old...

CC, try going to settings, then wifi, it may be asking you to join another network.   Make sure your wifi is on and you should have a home one normally used.

I often go to my desktop and google then keep suggestions on the desktop while I work on pad.

Quiet day for me today.  I had planned on going to Texas but getting connecting flights not good and as the weather awful still I decided would do it later.

But now a tech problem again.
I think I just blew my IPad. Strange. It did start up . They said like."Slide to power off" Thought I would do that as not done awhile. Turned it back on and nothing. It had 60% power still but just blank. I plugged in to power cord again but nothing works. Was working perfect last night.
Could it be the battery died? I will take it to Best Buys tomorrow and check. Never thought they just did that without some warning.
Enjoy your day. Sun out here but cold. They said snow but I doubt it now. Heading east now so look out Granddaughter.  some Spring this is....

Jeanne, I have never had my iPad say that but my iPhone does when I want to turn it off.

When I am not going to be using the iPad for awhile, there is a button in the upper right corner.  I press that and it shuts it totally down which saves the battery.

Mary

Post by: jackwv on April 01, 2018, 01:46:52 PM
Jeanne, if plugged in the battery should charge even when you have powered off.   When you power back on, usually mine will stay blank for a bit, but then the apple comes up there is another pause and things start working again.  If no luck then Best Buy sounds like a good idea.

Got to looking again, you said slide to power off, I would shut down completely,   like this

If turning the iPad off and back on again doesn't fix the problem, or the iPad is unresponsive when you try to turn it off, you have to reset it by doing the following: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

Yes Jack.  I brought up apple on desktop. Said to try pressing the On/off switch and the home button same time.. If  that didn't work press one for 3 seconds and then the home for 3 seconds.  Got it working again now.  Amazing these Techs arn't they.  No idea what caused it to do what it did. Not ready to buy a new IPad yet...

Glad you are back in business.   I was surprised it was even removed.  Read this process, appears that was your solution.

How do I get my app store back on my iPad?

Fix 2 â€" Check Restrictions

1.Open “Settings” from the Home screen.
2.Tap “General“.
3.Select “Restrictions“.
4.Make sure “Apps” is set to “Allow all apps“. Older versions of iOS will show as “App Store” and you will want to set it to “On“.

Good work CC.   Probably, like me, you changed passwords and they still had the old one.  Good that you were able to set a new password.   I had fits once, they kept asking for the password and even when I change was having problems.  They finally accepted a new on that was (partial)  Igiveup    with several numbers.   At this point I have not changed it for several years.

I don’t put either the finger print or a password on my IPAD.  With each update, it wants you to do that,  ut you can option out by looking at the options and selecting no password.  It’ll try to get you to put one in, but I don’t want the aggravation.

I use an easy 4 digit password.  I would have by passed but my son insisted.  He in fact preferred the finger print, but I declined.  I guess there is some measure of security with the password, and takes no time.   Now the app store requires another and of course your credit card number if buying.

For me the 4 digit is to get onto the phone and pad and that is all the space they provide.    They require the long one at the store.

Does anyone here use the Consumer Cell. Mobile Phone? I have one for years as don't use often. Now getting to many unsolicited calls on it. I use them.  One of the cheaper in this area. I also don't use it much . Mainly I use it when I go out for emergency purposes.

I would venture to guess that if you change your provider you will still get unwanted calls. Many automatically "dial" out the call. When someone answers the call is forwarded to a "representative".

Not sure  if this is the right Forum but it is the closest to my question.  I just bought a new Cell Phone as the last one did not work very good.  The Company is Consumer Cellular.  I rarely use it but it takes TWo HOURS EVERY MORNING TO RECHARGE IT.  iS THIS NORMAL?   sorry for the caps.

Joan if handy I would go to the source.   Do not know the phone you have, I have an iPhone on AT&T.    I seldom run low on battery but plug the phone in overnight.   You may be running some programs you do not need and/or want.   I have had my latest phone several months and a problem with settings.  Walked into the store, they corrected things and no charge.

If store not handy you might post the make and model of your phone someone may have an answer.  Believe I would put it on the charger at night and it should indicate if you have a fully charged battery.

Joan. Now I have used Consumer Cell for years. Like you I don't use it that much . If I remember when you get them at the first time before using you have to leave it charging for a couple hours or so.. I just have250 min. on it. Never use that much.. Just turn it off as only couple people have the number. However now getting a lot of calls from spam and such on it. Not as bad as home line. There about 8 a day. Not a thing can be done

I would suggest you go to the Consumer Cellular web site. It is (or was when I was there) fairly complete. -  https://www.consumercellular.com/Plans  - They offer all sorts of phones and plans, no contracts, $1.00 AARP discount, very flexible plans.  I bought the Motorola smart phone - cost not too bad. It has a camera in it so that allows banking access. I like the ability to deposit checks with it (saves trips to the bank)
Coverage varies with all providers and locations. Mine works good here but my son uses Sprint and reception is not as good here in the house.

I have Bell South.net for some of my e-mail and they have made huge changes in the way I understand my service.  I don't want anything new and have no idea how to get them to understand.  I also have ATT telephone service which I want to keep as I can call both my sisters long distance without an extra charge--according to my understanding I can call anyone in the continental U.S. without a long distance charge.  Any suggestions from any other ATT users?  There are a couple of local companies I could switch to, but it would involve changing all my Bellsouth e-mail accounts.

Thanks,
Sue

P.S.  I use Hotmail for my family and a few close friends.  I've been using ATT for business mostly.

I do wonder if the problems are more the particular phone and not the plan.

Sue I am on AT&T   My son has a plan for he and wife, daughter and included me.   Have been on it several years and no problems.  If a question I do not get on the phone, seldom helps,   I go to the ATT store they have been very helpful. Have never had an issue with the phone service.    Do not know my sons plan but he tells me no concern with limits.   I will, on occasion, watch tv on the pad or phone.  I had an Apple I-7 but earlier this year I traded up to and I 8   I have learned to use it as a GPS, gave my Garmin to a friend.  The phone is like a mini computer and with a good camera.   I paid for the phone.   Do not see his monthly bill but we meet 3 or 4 times a week and I always pick up the bar tab.

Sue and Jack, I have AT&T service for both phone and Internet.  Recently Tom wanted to up our speed and was going to Comcast.  I asked him to check with AT&T to see if they had a different plan.  Tom did and we are still with AT&T.  I wanted to stay with them because I have had no problems and I have heard of people with Comcast having problems.  I'm not sure our speed was upped to what Tom hoped for but he was satisfied with the results.  I am on landline and have only one phone.  I do have a TracFone but I use that for emergencies and to call Tom to come and get me from appointments.  My AT&T bill for both phone and Internet is $104.  I do not intend to get a smart phone or cell phone.

I definitely agree with Jack's comment.
"I do wonder if the problems are more the particular phone and not the plan."

Joan - Don't those phones come with a guaranty. Probably short, but most failures show up quickly.

I very much understand that. Seems that most purchases or transactions lately have something wrong or an error.

Joan with Comcast I get free phone service for a "land line", but never hooked one up.  I am now sold on the phone in my pocket.   Have not had a land line for several years.

I keep a cell phone, but only charge it if I'm going out of town.  My ATT service gives me free long distance anywhere in the U.S.  (I realize that they are charging me more for my entire service--but my sisters both live far away and we try to talk at least twice or three times a month.  I am not charged for the long distance calls.).  I am confused, though, about the new terms they posted on my Bellsouth account this week.

I guess I'll leave it like it is and hope my son who lives nearby can figure it out for me.

Joan.
Now on you Consumer Cell Phone. Do you have a Target Store close. They Represent Consumer and will take care of setting it up right for you. I am pretty sure. I am not that crazy about CC as I just have a Flip one. It is to much trying to Text on it. Yet most people expect Texting things to you now. I may look at one of the CCell new phones.
I am going to call my Home line people A TT. as I don't have long distance on it and Yet it is now up to $37  a month. Get just to may people calling. at least 7 a day just ring and never talk. Do it late at night now and also weekends. That is about all I use it for but now they even charging for call in town.
I feel like Technology is just getting out of hand now. I for one tired of it....

After reading this article, I discovered I had 2221 contacts on my phone from my email addresses being added to my phone's contacts as well as multiple dupes and bad numbers. I generally ignored it because I didn't know how to clean my contacts correctly and I didn't know how to stop my email from syncing everything with my phone. Now I do and I have. The following is quoted from the article.

"Chances are, the smartphone in your hand isn't your first. And chances are, it's carrying contacts from three, five, even 10 years ago that you've been faithfully migrating from phone to phone.

My iPhone address book holds nearly 800 contacts including defunct numbers, contacts containing no information, and of course the requisite dozens of duplicate contacts. This is the result of years of syncing various email accounts and social media profiles. Blank contacts can be created when Android phones use Google Voice to message or call contacts. Allowing Facebook to sync contacts with your phonebook way back when could have added tons of not-really-friends into your phone.

Until recently, I just ignored the growing chaos of my contacts list. If I needed to call someone who wasn't already in my favorites, I typed their name into the search box and never, ever tried scrolling.

But your contacts list isn't just for making calls. It also populates messaging apps like WhatsApp, Snapchat and Viber. It powers your email contacts, and it rears its head in your calendar app too."

Is it an app on your IPAD or are you getting it on Facebook?

If it’s an app, you hold your finger on it until all the apps start to wiggle, and then you click on the X.

I’ve run into that selling thing, but it’s on Facebook.  I just ignore it.

From an Internet search:For phone and probably IPad

“To switch up what notifications show up on your phone, head to the settings sections within your Facebook mobile app. Go to Settings > Account Settings > Notifications > Mobile, then go through and turn on or off the ones that do and don't matter to you.Sep 6, 2016”

==========
On my iPad with the Facebook app, there are three horizontal lines at the bottom right. Click on those and you should see settings.  I don’t see mobile.  I’ll look further.

Edit:  another source says

“The marketplace notifications are just for-sale group notifications. They used to be in the globe tab, but now they are in the marketplace tab. Disabling notifications for them is the same as disabling notifications for a group. To learn how to do so, please visit this Help Center article:

Here’s what I found on an internet search...I did it for my Ipad.

How to stop marketplace notifications?

Here’s a simple process for turning off updates and notifications from the Marketplace app. For convenience, i have detailed the steps to execute on a desktop computer (tried it in both Windows  10 PC and MAC OSx).
Here we go:

Open your browser and log in to your Facebook account
Hit the arrow at the right hand side.
From the drop down menu select Settings
Now, from the left hand side menu, select Notifications
In the On Facebook section, hit the Edit button
Now scroll down to App Request and Activity and then hit Edit
Select Turn Off from the dropdown at the right hand side of  the Market Place app.
That will stop Facebook notifications from Marketplace.

There is a lot of alarm in Android phone industries over a massive billion dollar tracking and theft scam. This link is to a spreadsheet showing the apps, some set for kids that allows them to steal your info and even track everything you do. Google says it is busy deleting apps from it but check to see if you use any of them.

Sorry CC unable to help with that.  I know that I avoid passwords and possible other settings. Hope Patricia or Rick have an answer.  If you have an iPhone, I have found that going to AT&T or Verison  have folks able to do necessary adjustments and have never charged me to do so.  Would take the iPad along.  Best Buy might, but would ask if a charge.

I am not able to use  my desktop computer at the moment and using IPad. So much I don't know how to do in it.
Was trying to copy and paste a long postings I had done here on s andF   tonight to save the typing. Most people just read certain forums.
I Cant remember how to do it on iPad. So use to using desktop.

Got to get in bed. Already down to 6 below zero and house getting colder. I do have a electric blanket on.

Put your finger somewhere on text you want to copy and hold it there. When options come up, click on Select ALL and then COPY.  You can then go to other place, open reply box, click your finger in the box and when options come up, select PASTE>

Stay warm and safe.

Thanks Jane. Not looked at the Ipad today still messed up a little. Will try your tip tomorrow.
How I wish they had kept the place on . Maybe it was Seniornet . All the tips where stored in there for when our question answered. Was great.
Jane. Just dont be in a hurry to head home. Even colder for you. Said today the Minneapolis is at 60 deg below and Chicago high also. Lakes don't help when this cold. They say can pour liquid from high and if freezes before hits ground . I just got up to turn my electric blanket on on my bed. Sure glad I have that. Only thing is it turns off after 3 hours and so have to wake up to clik back on. I don't keep bedroom register on and boy its cold in there. So many people have water pipes busting and furnaces stop running. They are keeping chuches, libraries and lots of place staying up all night . Buses trying to run some and at the big turn around places they have buses staying in spots with heat running.  First time that the Univ. Of Illinois not open as records kept. They way the kids have to go from building to building I cant see them being able to be out they say try for only 15 min. Not seen a school but all week. Still not as bad as homes in floods and fires. So grateful for that.

I have just Googled it for you, Jeanne. Here is what to do -

To access the Control Centre swipe your finger down from the upper right corner of the iPad screen.
In the Control Center, locate the Lock Rotation button. The lock rotation icon has a circular arrow around a lock. If this button is highlighted, tap it to toggle the rotation lock off.
You should be able to rotate the iPad now, but you can't rotate it with the control panel open. You can close the control panel by either (1) sliding a finger down starting from the top of the control panel or (2) press the iPad's Home Button.

Regards, Jakki.

orry to say it but winter is back here. No snow but really cold. It stay away for the Marathon runners early but by 10 am it starting storm. Rained all day. I have not even gotten dressed and think will just shower and put other PJs on.
Have a bad time with my tech stuff also. My desktop working o.k but what a mess with my Ipad and one other that works WiFi and its google that has them messed up. I have now got the new smart phone working some but have not put a google acct. on it yet. I have rung them up to work with me but it is another company not google who answered there service calls. Now they want you to pay  $60 for a month of help. Not paying for it.
Will let someone else work on the Smart phone . May try calling them later. Think I am going to go back to reading more and stop with the Tech Stuff for awhile. Ipad will not even let me shut it down. Some women voice who I can't understand just keep talking.

Tap and hold the icon until your apps shake. Tap the X icon to delete it. Then tap Delete to confirm that you want to remove the Messenger app from your iOS device. You can still check your inbox on the Facebook mobile site.

Now I think my iPad is using battery time fast. Even if not using it. I charge it to 100 and it only last a short. Now it is getting old about 6 years. Never used it a lot.
The magnetic cover is pretty worn out along edges. Maybe it is not shutting down when I close it.  MY buy another one end of year. I have all my books on this one.

Jeanne, I turn my Ipad off completely when I'm done with it.  There is a button in the upper right corner.  I don't trust the cover on mine.  It turns the screen off but I don't think it actually shuts it off.

I mainly use it to read my Kindle books.  If I am sitting close to a plug when I am using it, I will plug it in while I'm reading.
