Dec. 20 Update on Keith. His wound is healing so nicely that I only have to change the canister on his wound vac every 5 days. Yesterday his caregiver took him out for a haircut, I had called the shop and told them to cut his hair SHORT, it is shorter that it has ever been. Now he needs a shave, the beard is too long for the electric razor. The nurse at OPI (Out Patient Infusion) yesterday said he seemed more alert. He does sleep a lot but that goes with the Alzheimer diagnosis. Of course he thinks his doesn't have any dementia at all. That too goes with the diagnosis. He does get lost in this house and goes in the opposite direction of where he wants to go. Like the laundry room last night going to bed.The antibiotic kills all the good bacteria in his gut nso he does have an incontinence problem there and we sometimes have to change and clean him up 1-2 times a day.The Kefir is supposed to be putting the good bacteria back in his gut.I am leaving for California on Monday for a couple of days. His caregiver will be with him full time while I am gone and will start working 6hr 5 days a week after the first of Jan. I still need to get a decent night's sleep. My eye surgery is scheduled for Jan3 and now I have a little bit of a cold. Got to get rid of that ASAP.

SharonE

Marilyn, so glad to hear k's wound is healing so well.  The caregivers are a wonderful blessing for you.  I hope you have a wonderful trip to Gilbert's.  Your cold shouldn't impact your surgery unless it is in your lungs and you have trouble breathing. John had a mild cold when he had his first eye done.

John has his 2nd appt with the hearing aid specialist today. I'm so glad he got them, in spite of the awful cost. Monday, I have to take him to Matthews, a nearby (30 miles or so) to see his eye surgeon for a recheck. He works out of 2 offices and wouldn't be able to see him for another 2 weeks at the one here. He wants to get in and get cleared to get glasses asap.  The cheaters help a lot, but are not what he really needs.

It is 50 degrees with a steady drizzle today and of course today was the day I had to go to the grocery and to get my hair cut!

A handyman is coming over shortly as we have a toilet that is running and neither of us could put a new flapper on. We also need a new switch to our electric fireplace. I hate not having it at Christmas time.

Jane, I'm sorry you were up last night too.  The weather fronts definitely impact our old joints.

Mary, I think you did say that you stopped because of the early AM darkness, but I had forgotten. I never get up that early!!  Glad you will be with Margaret & Kate for Christmas. I hope it is a good time for you all in spite of Kate's loss.

I can't remember what anyone else posted. With the new format, you can't scroll back.  For all of you who will be leaving soon, I'm sending

BEST WISHES FOR A VERY BLESSED CHRISTMAS!

Winter solstice greetings!

Marilyn...glad the Caregiver can give you a needed break. Have a good Christmas with Gilbert and family.

Sharon...be careful out and about with the Christmas crowds.

It was a long day at the dealership, over near the Pharr- McAllen- Mission urban area, so the traffic was bad.  Then woman said it could be 3-4 hours because they would be doing a software update, too.  They had a driver take us to Applebee's so we could eat.  At about 3:45 they had finished and we headed back.  We won't go back there.  Ray will get any needed 10,000 mile oil change, etc done before we leave home, even if it's early.

Good morning, Buddies.  It's another dreary wet day here.  No rain yet, but everything is still wet and more rain is expected.  I'd hoped it would dry up today so I could get the wet leaves raked up and down to the curb, but I don't think we'll see any sun today and perhaps not tomorrow.

I have a visit from a Senior Friend yesterday.  He brought me a small gift from the Senior & Friends group (candy which I don't need!) and we chatted for quite a while.  It was kind of him and I enjoyed the visit, but was also fretting (silently) about the cards I needed to address and checks I needed to write.  These volunteers are usually retired people who've joined Seniors and Friends to especially check in on those of us who are no longer driving.  It's a nice service, but I'm thinking I won't join again next year.  I'll have to discuss that with Tim, though, as it is a big help to him.  He's self employed and it's often hard for him to come by when he's working.

Not much else to report this morning.  I'm dressed and ready for Tim and hope we don't get drenched while out doing our errands.

Have a nice day, Every Buddy.

Enjoy Your Day, Joy!

SharonE

HOPING YOU HAVE A WONDERFUL BIRTHDAY FOLLOWED BY A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS, JOY

The plumber has been here to fix our running toilet and then I went to the Dr. for my MC wellness visit.  My #s were all good except for cholestrol and triglycerides. The LDL was particularly bad as usual, but down a little from last year.  Since I can't take statins and diet doesn't work, I just have to face that. My fasting glucose was down to 70!  It was 80 last time and before that was in the 90's. I think that is rather strange because I have a sweet tooth which I try to control, I don't think I've done anything different since the last test. He said it was low, but didn't seem concerned about it.

I'm going to try to convince myself to make the banana bread this afternoon and pies tomorrow.

Jane, I agree that I wouldn't plan to go to that car place again unless absolutely necessary.  It has been raining for 2 days here but my trips have been less than a mile from our front gate.  Supposed to be nice for the next 4 days--thanks goodness because I have to drive John to Matthews on Monday which involves the interstate and I hate to drive in the rain.

Safe travels for all of you going somewhere.  Sharon

Thanks to all for the birthday wishes.  I think I will have another 90th!!!!!

SCFSue

Good morning, Every Buddy.  I just wrote my Last! (I hope) Christmas card to my college roommate.  We only write once a year now (we graduated in 1958 and Cinda was my only attendant at our wedding at my aunt and uncle's home in Columbia).  We used to correspond more often, but raising children and in my case frequent moves cut down on letters.  It's really good to hear from her.  She and her husband have been married 51 years now.  My Bob died in 2002 after 44 years of marriage.  He had a recurrence of colon cancer.  Cinda and Jimmy live in her home town of Bennettsville, SC, and he is still farming, but not as much.  Their son and daughter live nearby.

I am going to begin prep today for Christmas dinner.  I'm making a blueberry pie and a salad--Tim will cook the entrĂ©e and bring some side dishes on Christmas Day which we'll finish in my ovens.  I still have some gifts to wrap for Tim and Kris, but sent everyone else checks.  I still don't drive and shopping depends on getting someone to take me to a store.

Joy, a belated Happy Birthday.  Reaching the big 9-0 is quite an accomplishment and I'm glad you are well and near your children!

Darlene, enjoy your 2 celebrations with your children.  I've heard from both my sons who live elsewhere (New Orleans and Illinois) and will enjoy the day with Tim and Kris.  Tim will do the cooking here at my house except for the blueberry pie that I am making.  All 3 of my sons cook, but Bill and Jon don't cook as much as Tim.  Their wives like to cook although Jon does a lot of their cooking, depending on what they are having.

I need to get dressed so that I can get my kitchen table cleaned up and ONE MORE Christmas card to write before the mailman gets here.  Have a nice day, Every Buddy.

Sue

SharonE

Joy, WOW!  I didn't realize it was your 90th.  My 80th is next October. You seem pretty healthy for that age.

Sue, glad you got your cards out and that you will have Christmas with Tim and Kris. It's been nearly 20 years since we have had Christmas with the kids at our home.  It's been pretty long since we have had it with any of them anywhere.  With their kids and in-laws and being scattered everywhere, it just hasn't been convenient. I don't like to go north at Christmas either.  We had planned to go down to Mel's new house in Tampa area this year, but after the TG gathering ballooned and everyone was there, we didn't want to go again so soon. However, we will have a girls' weekend there the end of Feb when John is in NZ.

I did get my banana breads baked yesterday and will do the pies later this afternoon. I fixed a plate of the banana bread to take down to a neighbor, but she was going out the door when I called, so will take it later.

Jane, what are you up to today?  We actually have sun and 50's today, the best for quite a while.

Darlene, enjoy your double Christmas.  I'm envious.

Mary, I think you are on the way to Margaret's today. Have a good visit.
Sharon

jane

Sue...sounds like a nice Christmas with Tim and Kris.

Sharon...I hope you don't have to drive in the rain.  That never used to bother me, but it does now.  The same with highways with 3-4 lanes on each side.  I hate that, esp. when I'm in an area I don't know.

Joy...glad your 90th was good.

Darlene...We are loving this weather...People in the outdoor pool again this morning, of course, when we went for a short walk.  My joints are unhappy with the latest weather front and max dosage of 8 hour Tylenol for arthritis hasn't helped as much as I'd hoped.

Ray needs to make a WalMart run to find a pan and grill for his rib roast he plans for Christmas dinner.  I want to get some more of the little rice lights I got there, since I doubt they have them after the holiday.

jane

Cottoncandy

Jane what is rice lights? Darlene

jane

Tiny LED lights that are battery operated...fun to string around things for little lights...I want to use them around and in candle rings.  I'm using some now here around my little snowmen.

WalMart has them...and in colors as well as the warm white I get...and the little wire can be black, gold, green, etc. to fit in as well.  Target also lists them.  Here's one I found that shows it better:

We had a lovely day today - sunny and mid50s.  BUT, Sharon managed to send me her cold.
It hit me suddenly yesterday afternoon.  It seems to be centered in my throat, so far - and I don't feel too bad.  But I was awake almost all night.  I slept from 11-about 12:30, but then got up and was awake until about 4:30 a.m.  After that I slept in the chair until 7:30, and napped again around lunchtime.  I let Margaret know that I had a cold.  She's called and lovingly "uninvited" me - at least for a few days.  Nobody else wants to get it.  Definitely makes sense to me.  I fixed my own lunch down here, and had my supper delivered, so I didn't get around any of the other residents here.

Always a nice Xmas present!   :tickedoff:

Jane. it is so funny how the weather in Texas can change every 50 miles.  I know Mcallen  well as my friend lives there.
At the moment trying to stay off reading and Computer.  For weeks my eyes have been so dry, itchy and watering. So glad I had a appt. with eye Dr. yesterday. Right away he found I had Follicular Conjunctivitis. I have been putting in drops for months for dry eye. But he gave me a proscription for a Steroid drops and the name of another one of the shelf that is better than the one I had been using.
Never had this before or heard of it. I only get weird things. So he wants me back in 3 weeks. Glad I am home over the holidays

Thanks to all you friends for listening to my "bragging" about having my 90th birthday.  I promise
to do the same when you reach that day. I had a LOVELY birthday party with all my children (now 5
since i lost my oldest, Cindy, when she was 69), with grandchildren, friends, etc. I am ready for
another one  ;D

SCFSue

Good afternoon, Every Buddy.  I'm home from church later than usual as Bonney and Jean picked me up and they always go to Burger King for lunch after church, so of course I had to go along, too.  I've changed clothes and plan to make some chocolate chip cookies this afternoon as well as read.

Joy, your 90th birthday party sounds wonderful.  I am so glad your living children, grandchildren, and friends were able to attend.  90 is wonderful milestone and I know your family and friends were so happy to celebrate with you!  I'll be looking forward to your 90 first!

Jeanne, I'm sorry about the Conjunctivitis.  I had that once a long while ago and I know how uncomfortable that can be.  I hope the Steroid drops and the other new meds will clear it up right away.

Mary, I'm sorry about the cold.  And that you'll miss some of the holidays with your girls and their families, but hopefully you'll feel better soon and will be glad you didn't give it to any of them.  I also hope you sleep better tonight.  Getting a cold like that at Christmas time is like getting the "butt ugly sweater someone was "so Kind?!" to knit for you!  Try to nap during the day if you're unable to sleep during the night.

Jane, I checked out the "fairy lights".  They are cute, but I've already put up my tree and a few ornaments around the house, so I'm not going to buy a set now, but if I see some on sale after Christmas, may buy a string.  It sounds like they are giving you some Christmas cheer at your condo.

Sharon, "girl time" with your daughters sounds like a lovely post-Christmas gathering.  I know you'll enjoy getting together with them in February while John is in New Zealand. If he brings any pictures back, I'd love to see them.  I've always wanted to go there--just one more thing on my bucket list I'll have to skip!

I need to get out to the kitchen and get the oven turned on.  Have a nice day, Every Buddy.

Update on my condition.I went to the hospital by ambulance on Friday night because my heart rate was up to I had a nauseous feeling and upper chest burning type pain. I also have a bad cold settling in my chest. In the ambulance my heart rate went up to 170, the inserted IV"S and med to bring down m,y heart rate and BP up as it was dropping. At the hospital they stopped my heart and restarted it to beat the proper rate. I was also told that my potassium was down and that could have attributed to the Atrial Fibrillation as well as stress. The caregiver stayed here with Keith while I was in hospital.I was released after the Echo gram last night. I still plan to make the trip to California tomorrow providing that I feel up to driving there. That depends on how I feel in the morning.I do have Mitral valve prolapse that I've had for years. But this was the only heart problem I hope it was a one time thing. Slowing down my life now.

maryz

Good heavens, Marilyn - how scary!!  I know how important it is for you to get away for a few days, but I'd think long and hard about taking a long road trip alone after such a scare.  What did the doc say about it?

Sue, glad you got to go to church and lunch with your friends.

Today, I feel awful and sound worse, so I'm really glad I'm at home and not "sharing" this with anybody.  I'll get my supper brought in again today.
"When someone you love dies, you never quite get over it.  You just learn how to go on without them. But always keep them safely tucked in your heart."

SharonE

Joy, that sounds like a wonderful party with your family and friends.  We had a surprise luncheon party at a hotel private room for my mom when she was 90. I think it was the first and last time the whole family was at one place at one time.  My brother's family is in FL, we were in IN and now SC and the grands are all over.  It's hard to get just my side of the family together at one time. Thanksgiving was one of those special times.  We hired a photographer to take pics at Mom's party and are gift to her was a large framed one of the whole group. I hope they did something similar for you.  If not, tell them it is a must for your 91st!

Darlene, glad you asked about the lights. Jane, they are cute and I might buy some too. On QVC they have shown them in clear glass vases with ornaments, etc. However they didn't call them rice lights. Not sure what they called them.

Sue, I didn't have any eggs yesterday, so had to pick up some today for my pumpkin pie. I did get the mince made though and John helped! So I need to go in and make that soon.

Mary, I'm so sorry I sent my cold to you via the internet.  It was a lousy thing for me to do at Christmas! :) I'm sure everyone appreciates your staying to yourself while you're sick, but such a shame you can't go to Margaret's.  Take good care of yourself.  Try some Coldeez lozenges. I think I am finally over mine.

We had a nice SS and church service. I've got the 2nd load of laundry in. Tomorrow is John's eye appt in Matthews. Not sure if we will go to Christmas Eve services or not. I can't remember the last time we missed one, but I will have to do the driving tomorrow and not sure I'll be up for going out again later.

Wishing blessings on all of you for the coming days.  Sharon

Cottoncandy

Marlyin...sorry to hear about ur heart episode...I agree with Mary...take care of ur self Darlene

Marilyn

I was told I could make the trip and it will be good for me to get away for a couple of days. It all depends on how I feel in the morning. I do have all the gifts already packed in the car. But I can always take them back out if I don't think I should be making the trip.

maryz

I called up for my supper this evening, and could just barely make myself understood.  Almost total laryngitis!!!  Wonder what tomorrow will bring.

SCFSue

Good morning, Buddies.  It's chilly here this morning, but no wet or white stuff outside, so it's going to be a pleasant day.  I need to wrap some Christmas gifts and do a little pre-Christmas dinner prep.  Tim is making the entrĂ©e and some side dishes and I'm making a blueberry pie.  I am going to church at 5:00 for our Christmas Eve service.  Bonney will pick up Jean and then me.  It will only last about 45 minutes, but is very nice and I'll enjoy it.  I'm getting out my red quilted coat that one of Bill's students gave him several years ago for Dawn, but it is too large for her and she sent it on to me.

I want to make some cheesy pecan balls today, too.  So lots to get done before 5:00!

Have a nice day, Every Buddy--and an early Merry Christmas!
Sue

SharonE

Marilyn, somehow I missed commenting on your scary heart event.  I do hope it is all stabilized now and that you can make the trip, but it does sound a little risky.  Big  HUGS and prayers for a safe trip and a happy Christmas.

Mary, you must really have a bad infection. I presume you have tried tea with lemon and honey?  It might be a good idea to go to an urgent care to see if they can do anything for you.  Not the gift you were expecting!  HUGS!

Sue, enjoy Christmas Eve services.  We are skipping this year, I think.  I did my pumpkin pie yesterday and the mince pie the day before.

John had his appt with the eye dr this AM and we had no problems finding it. It only took 35 minutes to ddrive there. I had thought it would take an hour!  All was well and he has an appt 1/9 to be tested for new glasses, so he should get them in 3 weeks from now. He can't wait.

I really don't have much to do today other than dinner.  Have a wonderful day!  Sharon

jane

Marilyn...hope you're up to the trip...as long as there won't be a lot of "drama" at Gilbert's.  Drama you don't need now!

Mary...take care of yourself...glad they're bringing you your meals!

Sue...your pie sounds delicious.

Sharon ...glad the trip was easy and John's eyes are good.

Jeanne...ouch on the eye issues...glad you could see your eye doc.

Darlene and Joy...hope you're both having a good Christmas Eve.

We've talked to various family members this morning, made a run to WalMart, and took a short walk.

Nothing else planned for the day.

We had planed to meet our two sons & their wives for lunch on Christmas Day at a casino but one son has to work & the other called today & said he had a scratchy throat & cough & didn't want to give it to us .  So Norm & I will go alone & afterward play a few slot machines . Our daughter lives in Washington state & another son lives in the bay area .
