That's terrible, Patricia. I knew only of the USPS attack. Make a Wish Foundation is one of my favorite charities. It was only a matter of time until someone messed with Amazon, but I'd bet there have been earlier attacks on them that I have either forgotten or didn't heard about. Did PC Matic say which E-mail programs are being targeted or is it across the board?

It's across the board. I don't have PC Matic as a system, I use another program, but as part of my defenses, I email subscribe to different tech sites which I highly recommend to anyone wanting to stay safe, thus helping everyone else to stay safe. I don't mean sites like Kim  Komando websites but actual tech sites such as PC Matic, Ask Leo, PC Pitstop, How to Geek and others. It pays to be defensive without being paranoid.

Rommel.
Thanks, I recd. the E-M O.K. had to bring it up on Desktop. Just could not read it on IPad. Printed out to small.
Not read it through yet. Will leave it on my EMail and read little at a time. That really took a lot of time for him to put that on.

Just curious whether anyone else watched "VALLEY OF THE BOOM" last night on the NAT GEO channel.
It was very fascinating as it detailed the birth of our internet, starting with the old Netscape browser.
It is a 6 part series with the first two being shown last night.

Don & Jack,
Thanks for that info.  I missed last night - didn't even know about it.  I'll try to catch up at Youtube and then program in the follow up weeks on the TV.

Remember the high speed we got for internet service back then?  I recall getting an upgraded modem for 1440 speed, which would now be considered "no speed".

When watching this program, you realize none of us would be visiting and chatting today if it weren't for those early internet pioneers.
The first two episodes are available (commercial free) on YOUTUBE.
Bill Gates is about to enter the scene in the third episode.

After watching Episodes 3 & 4 of "The Valley of the Boom", I realized I had forgotten
that Netscape was the foundation and precursor of Mozilla's FIREFOX.
Quote below is from the link below........

"The origins of Firefox can be traced directly to Netscape, a company whose Web browser, Netscape Navigator, was the dominant browser before Microsoft developed Internet Explorer. The internal company name for the browser was Mozilla. Eventually, Netscape released the source code for Navigator under an open source license, meaning anyone could see and use the code. A nonprofit group was set up to direct the development of browsers using this code. This group became the Mozilla Foundation in 2003."

CHANGE ALL PASSWORDS NOW!!!!!

Why You Should Care About the Collection #1 Data Breach

"The latest data breach wasn't an attack on a big company. Instead, Collection #1 is a massive database of 773 million email addresses and 21 million passwords compiled from a number of breaches.

So what? About half of the passwords haven't been revealed in earlier breaches. The whole database is being sold for just $45, which makes it affordable for any cybercrook. And, it's likely just the beginning. The hacker that's selling Collection #1 has four more collections of data.

So it's very likely that a password to an important account is in hackers hands, especially if you created the account a long time ago. I used my password manager's password health feature and found out that the password for one of my retirement accounts had been compromised. It was a company I'd stopped working for years ago, so it wasn't top of mind.

We walk you through how to find out if your passwords have been compromised and what you should do if they are. And even if your passwords aren't in Collection #1, change any that are weak.

More tech companies are warning about the big breach I posted about earlier. I had two on the list that I had to redo passwords for. One was for Microsoft's Outlook email and the other unsurprisingly was Yahoo.   https://techtalk.pcpitstop.com/2019/01/18/latest-data-breach-exposes-2-7b/?collection1leak=&utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=january_newsletter_4&ad_id=505870&share-ad-id=1

If you use W7 Microsoft has announced a support cutoff date.

"Microsoft has released plans to end support for Windows 7 on January 14, 2020.
What Does this Mean?

The end of life (EOL) of Windows 7 means Microsoft will no longer provide any security patches, software updates, or customer support to Windows 7 operating system (OS) users.  Fortunately, users have plenty of time to update their systems to Windows 10.  For many home users, updating to Windows 10 will not be a major issue.  Businesses, however, may face larger complications.

As some may know, moving a business over to an entirely new operating systems may lead to major complications.  This may be due to legacy systems that aren't compatible with Windows 10, training new employees on the new system, ensuring IT staff is available for the actual transition as well as the transition period, and the cost associated with all of the above.  In addition, some of the recent Windows 10 updates have created more problems than benefits.  This in itself has left businesses in no rush to migrate to this particular OS.

Unfortunately, there are few options available for these businesses running Windows 7."

Darn it. Just had the computer I got with Windows 10 picked up by the place along with my computer with w7 on so that the can transfer every thing I wanted to keep over. It's done and comes back tomorrow. Now MS xtending W7 to March 2020. They had said 2019. I would have stayed with 7. Hate bothering to learn another system. Jus don't use computer enough.
Big thing for me was emailing and nobody does it now . All texting
JeanneP

jane

WIN 10 isn't too bad and you'll have the latest with all the updates, etc., Jeanne, and all the "glitches" on your other system eliminated.

JeanneP

Well I got the w10 going.Few glitches that have to be taken care of with the Comcast part of it. Will not accept my Passwords. I do think it is a lot different. So much harder that the other and yet I remember the first Windows. Goodness that is over 30 plus years. I think they were much easer to work on.  I think that for a older person now. Jus starting out this W10 would be hard for them to learn. I sure can tell. My brain not figuring things like did way back. Even then I thought never learn this.
I will go and get a book and also now our library have gone to mostly new W10 computers. Will check things out with a couple of people there.
Was never hard for the past 15 years as my fried was in the business and changed and kept mine up to date. He passed last year and one of the things I am missing him for.
This new keyboard I put on is one of the curved ones. They say easy on fingers. I do seem to like it. Can't type and look at keys and so have missed a few. They are as bad as the computers. So many more keys and things on it.
As we can't get out doors here at the moment . down to 27 below again tonight and was below all day. So give time to sit and try to figure out things.

You're thinking positively, Jeanne.  Way to go!

Still at it .seemed to have figured the W10 a little but with all the changes to my. computer w10. Now the IPad messed up. Won't accept the Google set up. Just leave it for tomorrow as snowing heavy again so will be housebound again
JeanneP

Mary Ann

Jeanne, I realized I was really not using Windows 10, but Firefox, so I didn't have to change anything.  What gets me now is I daily receive a message that my sbcglobal.net is not up to date. I couldn't figure out what to do but remembered we recently went from AT&T to Xfinity because of Internet speed and that probably is the reason for the message.  I'll get Tom into the act one of these days.

Mary Ann

angelface555

MaryAnn, Windows Ten is the program that Wndows uses to operate your computer. Firefox is what you use to "browse" around the Internet. To put it another way, Windows Ten is your car and Firefox is the gas that moves that car around.

Mary Ann

Patricia, that is a good way to explain my situation.  In other words, I sit in the car and Firefox gets me around.  Jackwv tells about various Windows programs and I don't have them because they must be apps.  I'm really not interested in broadening my use of the computer, so if I don't get any apps, I don't have to worry about not using Windows programs.  I know there are other browsers than Firefox, but I am comfortable with it and I'll let things stay as they are.  Thanks for the explanation.

Has anyone here who uses the gmail.com for E mailing started getting emails saying that www Google will be closing down by April 2019?
I wonder if that means no more gmail accounts?  My goodness millions all over the world use it
JeanneP

RAMMEL

I got an email from Google tonight but haven't looked into it yet. I have a gmail account but only because some site "required" it. Almost never use it.

Google+ which is a Google program app is closing April 2019. It is not the entire global Google network but only a small app that allowed you to do more with Google Drive.

Google and Google Drive are not closing. Just the app called Google+.

Tried all day again to get my desktop and IPad working together. Ready to give up. Itd the problem between my Google account and my Comcast . Now only in the EM area. I have always had them set up that when A Email comes into one acct. I can get it up in the other.

Problem now is that Google will not accept Comcast.  I tried sending a Em from my Comcast to GMail and it came through. But then when I try to send one from GM to Comcast. It doesnt work. it has to be something wrong with maybe My Password was changed on the W10 Computer on my Comcast acct.

I just cant find where to take care of getting them both using one password.

Does anyone here have a good Service Tel Number for Google and Xfinity.  These that I have just gets me into Either India or Mexico.

am going out of my mind trying to fix my computers. Ever since I got the new W10 desktop and had everything for the old one transfered over to it nothing works. I use Comcast and my desktops all tied into a couple of Passwords. My Desktop, Ipad, Amazon Fire and another tablet I dont use to often. Just for books. All come up saying wrong Password . Even would not let me in my Seniorsandfriends today. I am working to try and now get them all using the same User Name and Password. So far taken 4 days trying. Need to give all a rest until I fix.
This bad weather not helping me at all. That and my car still not running. Hope spring gets here soon before I take a hammer to everything

Jeanne P  it is possible you are not hooked up to your wifi.  Your main computer should be hard wired to it.  Here is a link that I hope will help and a chat spot for you to start a discussion with Infinity.  I only use one computer, windows 10 and have been able to get it working to my satisfaction.
