Update on the kittens at 15 weeks;

"Back from the vet, vaccinated, examined, and with an updated schedule. Snips will be the 29th, with adoption the 2nd (adoption location not yet announced). The lump on mama's neck is a small wound which was not there on intake, so it's not that old. It looks like one of the kittens nicked her with a claw while wrestling, and it got infected. She was given a long-acting antibiotic shot and will go for a recheck on the 17th. They all got their claws trimmed, so they may not stick to the towers as easily for a day or two."

The dates were pushed back due to last processing of the URIs and some younger kittens needing help first.

MarsGal, the winner has a sense of humor - or a good mentor!

I enjoyed the bunny video. I've never seen a hopping contest! The winner was very self-assured.

Of course, I had to watch the next one about the farm cat who thought he was a chicken. I found it odd that they didn't neuter the males as they spayed the females. Jack is acting normally for an unneutered male.

Their social life is the same as wild horses or walrus and some other big cats in a social setting. Usually, it is one dominant male and a group of females. The young males would be driven off at about two years.

Patricia - I watched the first two video's, featuring FDJ.  He certainly is a pleasant and well spoken man, as I expected that he would be. I'm in awe of people who devote most of their time to the welfare of helpless animals. He is one of the "good guys", for sure.

Mary Ann

Kendrick is only part Bengal and we didn't have him at that age.  I loved the markings on those cats, beautiful!

Patricia, Kendrick doesn't have the circles of the Bengal cat, but he has stripes on his legs and his head looks like a Bengal, only with faint stripes.  Those kittens are so cute.  How can anyone resist a kitten!

Annie came tonight to have supper with us and supper was a ham and pineapple pizza.  Her birthday is Wednesday and she'll be 23!  Hardly seems possible.  She also cut my toenails and the two of us made my bed.  She intended to vacuum, but the other two were more important to me so she did those chores.

Tom picked her up to come here and is taking her home so that gives them some one-on-one time.

In a nutshell, the kittens went off to be adopted. Apple and Peach, the two shyer kittens, weren't adopted yet but are available at a site for adoption. Mama cat was held back as her biopsy results aren't in. She will be spayed once that is cleared up and adopted out.

Marilyne

So sorry to see that Apple and Peach have not been adopted.  That's the first of FDJ's kitten families that I've seen that haven't been adopted.  What will happen to them if no one wants them? :(

Patricia, I hope you continue to post, when FDJ gets a new litter to take care of and to socialize for adoption. I enjoy watching their progress, and always have a favorite or two, that I look for every day. I know it sometimes seems like no one is interested, because there are no comments . . . but I think that lots of people are looking into this folder, but just aren't posting anything.

That seems to be happening throughout Seniors & Friends. Always lots of members as well as non members looking in every day, but not many messages at all. Seems that most people choose only one folder to post in, and that's it. I wish our members would spread themselves out, and get acquainted with some of the other discussions/folders here in S&F?

so_P_bubble

I am one of those remiss in posting... :( Sorry!

There have always been litters where some are not immediately adopted but usually within the month. I have twice seen cats with serious issues adopted. One had kidney disease and one with FLIP and both of those are always, eventually fatal.

Peach and Apple are just shy around people and slower to trust but then that's why they say it's better to start with Ferals in the first couple of weeks and this litter came in at eight weeks. It was an amazing socialization of a feral litter at that age. And with mama at about a year and a half.

Mama will stay another week with FDJ until her neck wound biopsy comes back so she can be spayed and adopted. If a cat is not adopted, Purrfect Pals has an entirely separate building with different areas set up so the cats live healthy lives with a vet in the building, feline company, and daily volunteer company.

Thanks for the feedback Bubble and Marilyne it is appreciated and Marilyne, Purrfect Pals, The Critter Room, John Bartlett, alias FDJ; as well as many of the cats from former litters are all on Facebook.

There are so many myths out there about cats,(Dogs as well); that are often repeated as gospel. Here's some truth about some of those myths, for example; "Fact: While an older cat might be unhappy at being kept inside, cats that grow up indoors, even in apartments, can be very happy, as long as they are provided with plenty of toys,
scratching posts
climbing towers
safe compromises
for those times when you (or your cat) want him to be outdoors for fresh air and sunshine."

I have taken in cats, two years and much older and rarely has it been an issue for them to adjust to indoor only.

Carol

Our daughter recently adopted a Golden from the country Turkey.  Apparently, the people only want status symbols of Golden puppies and when they are older, they are dropped.  The family lives near Golden, Colorado and the town celebrated their first Golden Retriever gathering.  Daughter's dog was able to learn to swim - the dogs all had a wonderful day and it looks like it will be an annual meeting.

angelface555

Carol, that sounds wonderful that they rescued the Golden and were able to bring it to the gathering!

A similar thing happened in the US from the Taco Bell commercial and the rage for "purse dogs." Many of these fad dogs dumped when fads moved on, or they became "too much trouble" for their owners!

I have seen youtube videos or read accounts of animals in countries where they aren't valued or scorned as vermin.

Kendrick seems happy enough being a 100% indoor cat.  He has escaped a few times in the three years he's been here (we've had him since he was five months old) and he's found his way back home, none the worse for wear.  He gets an almost 100% kibble diet and when we weighed him and the vet weighed him a year later, he had gained only half a pound.  He is a big cat, 15.6 pounds, and too much for me to lift.

Carol, I love Goldens.  My nephew Tom and his family had one and she and I were good pals.

MarsGal

When I was working. the department head's wife would come in (she used to work there and had friend there as well) with her tiny dog. She carried an oversized purse with him in it. You wouldn't know he was there if she didn't unzip it enough for him to stick his nose out. He was sooooo quiet. She took him everywhere with her.

Mary Ann

MarsGal, I've heard of small dogs being carried in purses.  Cute idea.  None of the dogs we've had - or Kendrick - were small enough to fit in a purse, unfortunately!

This was posted this afternoon from FDJ just before Peach and Apple were adopted together! YAY!!

"The Critter Room shared a live video.
23 hrs ·
I've been visiting Apple & Peach to study how they've been doing and how they've been behaving now that they're on their own. One of the first things I've noticed is that they gain confidence from each other and using that confidence to explore & push their boundaries.

When they nap, they seek each other out and sleep together. When they play, then tend to go off away from each other while being distracted by something but return to each other after a minute or three. That in itself is a good case for making them a bonded pair but not quite enough. Making two kittens bonded makes it harder to find them homes.

But we've also notice that Peach seems to have become reliant on Apple, sort of like a security blanket. When Peach wakes up, she moves towards Apple (she doesn't have to go far being already cuddled with him) and starts to comfort nurse. When Apple went off to be Brave, and Peach didn't know where he was, she would cry out for him.

With Peach being more reliant on Apple and combined with both being a skittish sort but will blossom & gain strength from being together, it has been decided to make them a bonded pair. They will live out their lives together."

Sweetie Pie is still awaiting news of the neck biopsy and is now in heat again. Luckily she is protected from getting pregnant and also safe and warm inside, away from the more than 8 feet of snow Western Washington has received. The snow has hindered both getting a quick report back on the biopsy and also for the spay.

MarsGal

Oh good, I was wondering if they got adopted, finally, after I saw that the list was no longer posted. I also wonder why the biopsy is taking so long. Did the vet have to send the tissue out somewhere?

My critters woke me up this morning at 3:30am. For some reason Oscar (and I caught Shan at t once) has been tackling Lucy which causes quite a ruckus. Lucy isn't doing real well, and I am convinced that she has lost her hearing. While she does use some caution, she doesn't always pick up on Oscar stalking her. While the ear meds helped for a little while, it looks like her nasal drainage is coming back, and she is sounding a bit hoarse again. Since she hesitates to come into the kitchen for her mid-day meal, I now take it to her. She does not hear me call, will not always come into the kitchen when I show her her dish to entice her, and absolutely refuses to come in it she thinks one of the other two is waiting to way-lay her. I don't blame her. But she does gobble it up when I put her dish in front of her where she is. Mostly she sleeps. As you can see I am very worried about her. Another call to the vet is probably in order soon.

Marilyne

Interesting news about Peach and Apple, being declared a bonded pair. I can certainly understand why, and how it would be best for them to stay together forever.  However, I'm wondering how likely it is that someone will adopt both of them?  If no one does, then what will happen?  Would they end up in a sanctuary of some sort?

MarsGal - Sounds like Lucy, has some serious health problems?  I feel bad for her, that Shan and Oscar are picking on her.  Also, she is sleeping a lot, and not interested enough in eating, to go to the food herself? I don't remember if you said how old she is?

angelface555

Good morning! MarsGal, as I understand it, the neck issue was where she had gotten a scratch from one of the kittens probably in mock play. That's the general supposition. The scratch had become infected, and Sweetie Pie was constantly scratching at it and making it worse.

The local vet took a biopsy and sent it out just before a massive snowstorm dumped over eight foot of snow on the area, and there is another large snowstorm either happening now or about to — these two events are snarling different types of traffic and deliveries. Of course, I haven't checked today.

I am so sorry to hear about Lucy's problems and hope the vet will have some suggestions and or meds for her. When I had those six foster cats in 2009 through 2011, I had one cat who refused to come out of the bedroom as the other five would attack him outside of it. The bedroom seemed to be the agreed-upon neutral zone.

Marilyne, just after FDJ posted about the bonding decision, someone adopted the two, so they're off in their new home. Cats are amazingly resilient creatures who enjoy routines.

A case in point is the two males of the past litter of five brothers with different degrees of damage from an untreated URI. If you recall, they thought they might have to take one eye from each of two of the kittens because of URI inflicted damages. The meds they used, (Blood, drawn from a donor dog, and medically treated); helped to save the eyes but with different blindness results.

The one cat who was able only to distinguish light and dark was adopted together with one of the kittens who was blind in one eye, but the other was of normal vision.

What surprised everyone was the one almost blind, is the leader and isn't afraid of anything. The one with one good eye is timid and depends on the semi-blind cat to be his "seeing eye" and emotional support brother.
