I got drafted in 1951 took basic training at ft Riley Kansas, Chester hill. after basic training was shipped to White Sands Missal Range In New Mexico.
where I spent the first two years. Made the rank of specialist E five in thirteen months. when I was separated from active duty I got travel Pay home.
I then served two more years active reserves and two more in active for a six year oblation. my mistake looking back is that i never stayed in for twenty Plus years. would had a good retirement of two thousand or more per month. oh well I am a member of the over hill gang now. see you all later.

Lloyd

JaneS

MARILYNE, my parents didn't even know each other when he was in the army.  He was in his early 20s when he was drafted. Mom was 27 and Daddy was 37 when they married and my sister was born the day after their first annivesary and I was born 16 months later.  You and I are close to the same age but our parents weren't.

I got everything done today that I wanted to do except for one thing.  I didn't chop the onions and freeze them in little packets.  Maybe tomorrow....

I have 8 more jars of spaghetti sauce with hot Italian sausage in it so I'm ready for winter with the spaghetti sauce.  Now it's time for the veggie soup.  The meat is cooked and frozen so that's a start.  And there are lots of veggies in the freezer from the summer's plenty.  I have to check the jars and I might have to buy some.  I'm getting down to the nitty-gritty on the jars and I still want to make some applesauce.  I think I have 3 jars of last year's left.  And I have to get tomatoes tomorrow to do this weekend!  I love the Summer and Fall seasons.

I'm going to try to go to bed early tonight.  It's supposed to begin raining around 3 and if it thunders and there's lightning the doggies may be upset.  I say sleep first and comfort the doggies when it's necessary.  So I wish you all a peaceful night and a happy tomorrow.  And may God bless us, every one.

This day is getting away from me just like all of the rest of them!  I always have so many thoughts about what I am going to get done today......then I blink twice and the day is nearly over.

We did not have to help Michele today, so we managed to get a few outside things done today.  Bob cleaned out the gutters and that is always such a BG job.  Sure hate to have him on the ladder......but he is very careful😩

We are attending a little cocktail party later this afternoon at one of the new retirement homes.  It is something to do and we can see what they have to offer for the unbelievable amount of money they want to charge to live there.

We have to be at Dave and Michele's tomorrow morning at 6 AM to help get the grands up and readY for school.  Dave is flying home tonight from a business trip in Jacksonville, so he will take Michele to the Gamma Knife appointment.  It is scheduled for 6:45 AM.  WE certainly hope it goes well and this will be the last time she ever has to do this.  It is the third one she has had, so let's hope the third time is the CHARM!🙏🙏. On next Tuesday she will have a PET Scan and they will be able to see what and how many radiation treatments will be required to make sure the tumor on the lung is gone!  We just hope and pray they do not see any more spots that they are concerned about.  This has been such a very long process to get to this point😫😢😩

I have not had too many messes in the kitchen like many have shared....but one time a egg blew up in the microwave and it blew the door open and little egg pieces were everywhere!

We are home from our outing....not sure it was worth the effort!  Fist of all it was a total traffic jam getting in to the facility.  They were doing valet parking and it took forever....it took us 25 minutes from the time we turned in to the facilities drive before we got out of our car and headed in.  Over all people were not very friendly at all....seems at things like this many seem to think they are better than the others, and truth be known most of them probably can not afford this place anyway.  I could not believe how many were stuffing paper coffee cups with the hordes d'oeuvres and the deserts.....there were  all kinds of adult beverages and they were quite popular🤣🤣
The units were not staged, and they were all quite small......very little closet space, and no bath tubs at all.  In a 2bedroom place there were two roll in showers.  There was a lot of complaints about that.  Oh well.....it is going to be quite the fancy lace and I do not think we are really interested in it at all.  Other facilities nearer to us are much more to our liking.

AMY, your link to what you can cook in a instant pot was quite interesting.  My mom and grandma had the real pressure cookers and I was always scared to death of them.

JANE, how sad that your dad was gassed in the war.  Bless him for just quitting the small keys....I am sure that is what bought him 20 more years.

LLOYD, I had a friend that was stationed at White Sands in 1964-65......were you there then?

SHIRLEY, your egg story was a funny one.....and I am not surprised it made your pan a no longer no stick variety🤣🤣🤣. Your kitties are SO SPOILED, but I know they bring you pleasure and that is why you take such good care of them.

Have a good evening, EVERYFRIEND💞

Good Morning Everyfriend!  We're sitting here waiting for the boinger and breakfast.  Then I'll be off to Wally World this morning.  Wish me smiles!  They sure do make the hours go faster!

I did manage to go to be earlier than usual last night and I might have to try it again.  I slept from 10:30 to about 4:15 a.m. without waking and that's a lot more than the usual 2 to 3 hours I've been getting.  Then I went right back to sleep and slept until the alarm at 6.  It's gonna be a good day!

JENNY, I'm sorry your trip was a bust yesterday but if Bob is still able to be cleaning gutters, it sounds like you're not ready for that kind of living yet anyway.  I get the feeling that you enjoy your home and the privacy it gives you!

We're close to boinger time so.....

I wish you all a lovely day!
Make it your own in every way!

Good morning everyone..

Just checked the temp 36° and can hear the loons calling.I can listen to them all day long.

Yesterday  I managed to get a lot done ,have recipes that needed to be put in binders, cleaning and I did deliver the quilt in the morning....to a young lady. Picked enough cucumbers for a batch of pickles so that will be part of todays jobs. Had a visit from a neighbour and Floyd and Lloyd could be kin...both har workers, farmers and one I would want in my corner . Floyd brought over beautiful carrots, a huge onion ,that he said is so sweet you could peel and eat like an apple and some tomatoes. We had quite a visit..love listening to him .

Jenny, I too am scared of them that is why I just love my IP.

Hope Joy pops in.

Better get going or not pickles will get done.

Enjoy your day everyone.

Good Morning, Amy !!!    And, all the other friends.  Yes, I was absent for a few days.  Just trying to limit my computer times.   I have been trying to catch up with some chores, that I have been putting off for a long time.

I do think of all of you and wishing everyone a great day. I will try to get back later.  I know I say that a lot, but then the days just fly by so fast.

I hope everyone has a great day.

Amy

Lloyd a belated HAPPY BITHDAY to you!!!
:hb2:  :hb3:   I hope you got spoiled on your special day!!

Vegetables are all cut up just waiting for the time to go till I can start pickling. Cut up the carrots the neighbour gave us and oh my are they sweet!! Couldn't stand the floors so while I wait I washed them and will likely have to do it after pickling..

Noticed how fast some of the leaves are turning, the sumac is already red!! Maples have a tinge on them and the tamarack are also starting to get the yellow tinge..that time of year again..

Better do my beans then the pickles..

Almost sundown, still light enough to see 3 cats laying around the pool. Tom & Tiger have not had their "midnight snack" but Callie didn't want what was offered for supper so ate an extra large serving of her fav midnight snack, the canned Friskies. I always heard that cats ate the same all the time... not these! They act like they love something but if served 3 days in a row, they will walk away.  Seriously, is that not spoiled?

Lloyd, Cas was in the Air Force, Air Police. I was really offended when he died I had to give back the "Vet" plates for cars & RV. We were married 3 of the "active" years and all 4 of inactive. I was the one that Cloroxed his white hat cover, lanyard, gloves, boot laces & scarf EVERY night.... washed, ironed (yes, boot laces, too)... and pressed a sharp crease in his pants & clean ironed dress shirt every day. BUT, I didn't count when it came to being a vet, had to give up my tag. He won an "Airman of the Year" award for our base, only time in a year & half anyone from our base won. The Major asked him how he got that shine on his boots... instead of dipping his cloth covered fingers into water & then the polish... he used gin. Cas was in from 1953-'57 active & before he got the final discharge 4 years later (during the Cuban Missile Crisis), papers were burned at the base in MO where they were stored. Took extra time to get that final release! We were in England during the Suez Crisis & on alert until we were shipped back to the US. He didn't have the rank for a wife to be shipped over, but they couldn't stop me from going as a visitor & staying on. Because I already had a clearance (Civil Service at Corp of Eng Map Service, cartographic draftsman) & also Civil Service Clerk Typist/ draftsman.... I was intervied by the base commander in England for a job only an American (classified) could have. I told him that he didn't want me, that I couldn't take shorthand! I also would not join the Wife's Club since the gov didn't pay my way over & I didn't owe them the time. I did it all with a smile....  ;)  A lifetime ago. Hey, Happy (belated) Birthday!

Amy, thanks for that link. I still don't understand what the difference is between the IP & pressure cooker. I will have to check to see if anyone I know uses one here so I can see... this old Missouri Mule has to SEE to understand. (MO born, is the "Show Me State").... Y'all talk about using different types inserts/pans??? Still a mystery to me. I did use my pressure cooker to fix the beans & ham shanks.

I got the fixin's for another pot of taco soup. I've tried several different recipes but this one really "turns me on". This is the 3rd batch I've fixed & it makes a huge pot. Doesn't sound as good as it tastes. Jane, I'll bet your crew would love it if they like Mexican flavor at all. It calls for a package of taco seasoning.... I use Williams... or Taco Bell.... Wish we lived close enough to give you the 2 cartons of Ball jars I'll never use again. I did give a couple away when I made the picklelilly.... recipe from a long ago neighbor that tasted exactly like what Mom made.  I made it twice & both times dumped it out because I didn't trust my canning. These jars have the Liberty Bell on from 1976. If I remember, slight greenish/blue tint.

The goal tomorrow is to clean off this table & put leaves in.... will have room for all the paperwork still not finished with, this laptop & hopefully room to get out paints to start working on Christmas presents. Sam's Club has all their stuff out already, kinda pushing the season, huh? I can't paint in a room off by myself, spent all these years with a long phone cord so I could go from canvas to stove & still be talking on the phone. Supper was on the table at 5:00 pm & all sign of painting put away.  That was when it was safe to multi-task.  ;)  ;D

Good night to all.... I think Jenny has been coming in last so will let her turn the lights out. Got through Friday the 13th SO FAR without anything bad happening.

JaneS

I went by Davy's for tomatoes to make small jars of tomato sauce for recipes. That was my plan for tomorrow. They didn't have any of the boxes I saw there on Tuesday and when I asked, the young man said, "We'll have some more.  They come on Tuesdays."  Well, Duh!

Shirley, If I were near enough, I'd take your jars.  I'm getting down to the nitty gritt now.  I think I might just make it with the quarts.  I sort of forgot that I took 5 quarts of soup for the soup sale last October and I never went back for my jars.  I hope I can remember to pick them up after church on Sunday. But I might have to buy some pints.

I'm off to bed.  I'm going to check out my theory that not napping during the day and going to bed a little earlier is the reason that I slept better last night.

Cathy and I made our Amish Store run this afternoon and I'm all stocked up on paper goods.  I also picked up some extra peas for the veggie soup.  I'm pretty sure I don't have enough.

And now, Good Night Everyfriend.  I wish you a peaceful night and a happy tomorrow. Today was cooler...almost felt like Fall!  Still night time lows in mid 60s though.

JENNY, get the lights when you're finished!  Thanks!

good morning everyone, 47°. Ahh fall temperatures sure feel good to me. Woke with my right eye bothering me. Trying to see with just left eye. Happens at times but goes away after a few hours.  I managed to read the posts but just barely. Had my hand over the eye that is bothering me. Looks like no reading for me for at least a few hours.
I did not realize yesterday was Friday the 13th. I am not superstitious so that day never got to me. When I pulled up the bedroom shade this morning and looked out I saw that beautiful full moon. Harvest moon?
I will try to get back later. Maybe I should go back to bed and keep my eyes closed and hope this blurry  eye will be OK when I open them again.
  Have a good day.

Good morning everyone.

Had a thunderstorm and rain last night, didn't bother the dogs too much though. Managed to get the pickles done kitchen cleaned up last night then did a whole lot of nothing. :)

Today is laundry day and if it clears up the laundry will be hung out..hope to finish cutting the fabric out for another quilt but it is a lot of 1 1/2 " strips!

Gloria, love this cooler weather too. We do have a wee fire on at the moment just to take the chill out of the house.Hope your eye feels better soon.

Jane , I used the last new case of  pint jars yesterday.I do have half pints but use them more for jams/jellies.

Shirley, not spoiled just well loved. The IP can be used as a rice cooker, slow cooker , you can sauté in it. and now they have a gadget to use on top instead of the lid to make an air fryer out of it!! You can steam and make yogurt too! You don't have to watch till it comes up to temp just plug it is program it (easy) and walk away.

Enjoy your day everyone.

WELL!  Where's that JENNY hanging out.  She left the lights on all night!  I saw two mosquitos buzzing around in here this morning!

I've been up and attem and tending to some chores.  I now have 16 half cups of chopped onions in the freezer to grab for recipes.  I still have to do some peppers and onions and then take the trash up and dispose of it.  I don't want that onion smell in my house forever.  Then I have to make a quick stop at WM.  I have a meeting with one of the managers.

I better get back to work before it comes in here after me.  Enjoy your day, Everyfriend!

Denver

Good Morning, EVERYFRIEND!

I apologize for letting you all down......I should have been in to say good night and turn out the lights😤😤😤😤. Who knows how many have misquote bites this morning because of me🙀😩😩.

No excuse, I just have to admit it had been a very LONG day and once I got home, changed into my jammies, sank into the "recharger"....I was SHOT!

Michele came through the Gamma Knife treatment as well as can be expected.  She had a terrible headache when they removed the "halo" and they did all they could to help her through it.  They put the halo on around 9:30 and she had it on for nearly 5 hours....bless her heart.  Unfortunately they did see a couple of new spots, one they included in the procedure and one they are going to watch😩Another MRI will be done in a couple of months to see how things are looking then.  We are thankful this procedure is over, but I have to admit we were all praying they would say this procedure would do it and she would be done😢😢😢

We saw her about 5 PM when we dropped Matt off after football practice.  She came down to speak to us and had a cup of tea, but very soon after she was going back to bed and gettin back under a ice pack for relief.  She has this big graze wrap around her head and sure looked sad, but she continues to be in good spirits and seems to roll with the punches and says the most positive things vs moaning and groaning!  She is a real trooper.  Her only brother, flew in from California last night around midnight.  Dave picked him up and she sure was happy to see him this morning.

JANE, glad you managed to get those onions chopped and ready for the freezer.  Hope the meeting with the manager went well!  As usual, I always 😍😍 when I read you have been to the Amish Store!

AMY, take a extra "sniff" of those lined dried clothes when you take them down this afternoon for me please!  Glad the pickling went well......you are one very busy lady💞💞 I have to admit I can not help myself for feeling jealous of you picking your cukes, and then Floyd bringing you the yummy carrots and onions....no wonder you can make such yummy pickles🥰🥰🥰

GLORIA, I sure hope your eye is doing better this afternoon.

SHIRLEY, I share in your disappointment that you were forced to give up the Veterans Plate after Cass passed away.....Many wives were there supporting their military men and we deserve some recognition 😤😤. Same thing will happen to me if Bob passes first......his pension from the telephone company  ends, as does the free local telephone service he has for his service.  😤😤

HAPPY belated BIRTHDAY wishes to you, LLOYD.  Thank you for telling me the years you would have been at White Sands.

Good to see your post, JOY.  Just realize those ol chores will always be there waiting for you, so don't be overdoing it!

I have been watching a football game as I have been typing......University of Colorado and Air Force Academy.  Two of my favorite teams, so it requires me to pull for each tea: equally.  Colorado has more to loose if they do not win.

Enjoy the rest of your day.  We are going to a October Fest this afternoon in the village where Dave and Michele live.... it will be fun and we appreciate Dave inviting us.

Does anyone have a good recipe for White Bean Soup?  It can be Slow Cooker, regular large cookpot.  I don't have an IP yet. Seems like it might be a waste for a widow cooking for one.  I sometimes like to get those packages of 16 Bean (soup they call it), and make that up with all sorts of additions: sausage, ground beef, chicken or pork.  It has a sauce packet, but I usually add my own conglomeration of spices! Tell me more about the beans and hamshanks, sounds delicious.  Also, Taco Soup recipe? Thanks

Amy

Tomereader, I don't have a recipe but I did find this on the internet for you. I may even try this one.

JaneS

I was going to take a look at that recipe, AMY but it didn't open for me.  Well, the web site opened but it said the page was no longer available.

JENNY, you're forgiven for leaving the lights.  It sounds like you had a trying day yesterday.  I'm happy to hear that the news has not turned off Michele's good mood but I'm sorry the news wasn't what al of you were hoping for.

After I came back from taking the trash and my meeting (which went well, not what I'd hoped for but the news was OK), the couch was calling.  It must have been loaded with Zs because I sure did have a good nap.  And I must have needed it because I feel a lot better now.  I still have to do the onion strips to go with the peppers but that won't take long.  And my plan is to scoot by the Farmers Market after church tomorrow and (hopefully) get some Roma tomatoes to make my sauce.

When I got home there were 4 pint jars sitting on top of my dryer.  Seems Cathy had some empties from stuff she got through the year and she returned them for soup refills.  Along with what I scrounged up, I might only have to buy one box.  And I'm about to empty a jar of AMY'S ZUCCHINI RELISH and it's a pint.  About one more hotdog for lunch should do it.

I ran across Radioman's recipe for sweet potato soup and I might just make up a batch of that.  It was really good!  And I haven' made it for a while.

Annie is telling me it's time for supper so, before she gets really pushy, I better start thinking along those lines.  I hope everyone's day is going well....especially Michele's!

Crock Pot Ham Bone and Bean Soup

You've got a leftover ham bone so let's make some soup. There is nothing much more classic then ham and white bean soup. Use up that holiday ham bone with this traditional soup.

Prep Time
15 mins
Cook Time
10 hrs
Total Time
10 hr

1 lb of dry nave beans  or Great Northern

1 meaty ham bone

2 carrots diced

2 stalks of celery diced

1 medium onion diced.

1/2 tsp of garlic powder

1 1/2 tsp black pepper

1 bay leaf.

6 cups of water.

Instructions
Rinse 1 pound of navy or great northern dry beans. Pick through the beans for any stones or pebbles. Cover with water and allow to soak overnight. See notes if using precooked beans.
Under running water rinse any coating off a meaty ham bone. Also, scrape off any surface fat that you can. Add to a larger crock pot.
Dice 2 medium carrots, two stalks celery, and one medium onion. Carrot and celery are options but recommended.
Add the drained beans, carrots, celery and onion to the crock pot. Add 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon pepper, and one bay leaf. Add 6 cups water.

Cook on low for 10 hours total but at about 8 hours remove ham bone to a cutting board. Allow the bone to cool for 10-15 minutes. Then remove all meat from the bone. Discard bone and any fat and waste. Place meat back into the cookeing board. Allow the bone to cool for 10-15 minutes. Then remove all meat from the bone. Discard bone and any fat and waste. Place meat back into the cooker and finish cooking. This is a good point to taste test for adding salt if needed. Note: Cooking time can be decreased a few hours if using precooked beans.

Thank You.  I got the Website to open by scrolling down a bit.  It has lots of soup and other recipes.
Now, I have been thinking most of you here are in my age group (roughly) I'm 80. But if so, where on earth do you get all the energy you talk about. Just your canning episodes would tire me completely!  I love all your references to food + canning food.  You all need to get together and compile a cookbook. all the gardening and such, wow you are strictly Amazonian.  WonderWoman look out!

Somewhere in the S&F menu should be a Cook Book, or some similar title, that Larry Hanna put together.  Recipes are in categories.  Larry is not around to continue the folder, but the folder should still be available.
