Larry, my gas meter,as with the water meter, are scanned electronically as the utility guy drives by. They only show up once a year, if that, to check the accuracy of the indoor readings against their scanned readings.

Marilyne

I looked in here earlier this morning, and intended to come back after breakfast, but our electrical/gas power went out at 8:00, and didn't come back on until a few minutes ago.  (out for about an hour and a half)

I had all sorts of things planned to write about, so you can all be grateful that you will not be subjected to one of my long rambling "books"! ;D   Now 10:30, and I have to go out and mail a package to Claire for her birthday, coming up next week.

One thing I want to tell you all, is that I heard from Shirleyn last night.  She will be starting her chemotherapy next week, for her Lymphoma.  It will last until about the end of January. I certainly do wish her well, and I know you all do too!

Mary Ann

Marilyn, thanks for the information about Shirleyn.  She is in my thoughts.

I've been watching the Bush activities and now the train is heading for College Station.  It was a nice service this morning, not as much humor as yesterday.  I think CNN will be at College Station.  CNN has been the only station in our area covering today.

I had a call earlier today from Tom's former wife because she had realized today was Norm's birth date - he was born 89 years ago today.

Patricia, I did read your piece about Episcopalianism.  My mother's family has been Congregationalists since coming to this country.  Some were responsible for establishing churches.  My dad's family was Lutheran but Dad left that denomination before he met my mother.  I was baptized in a Methodist church but when we moved here, there was a Congregational church about a mile from where we lived and I've gone there ever since.  I think many basic church services are about the same, but the Episcopal and Catholic churches have a lot of ceremony that does not happen in the Congregational or Presbyterian churches.

My mother and her sisters were very close although living in three different locations.  Therefore, they had a Round Robin where one would write a letter and send it to another who would write a letter, send it on, enclosing the first letter.  The next sister would write a letter and enclose the letter she received and take out the letter of the person to whom it was going.  We tried to have it more inclusive with cousins, but the letters got lost somewhere and that was the end of the big one.  However, we continued the Round Robin until my one aunt had a stroke and went to live with the other sister.  We continued the correspondence, it just didn't go round and round.

Larry, I'm happy you had a good doctor's visit and I hope the additional med does help you.

I hope I haven't left anything unanswered, but I'm going to quit now.  I had something to eat and I managed to get dressed.  Tom finished my Christmas pictures and messages and I'm going to get started on those.  I want the ones to family to go our soon because I will enclose checked to the kids.

Oh my goodness.  I think I have finally gotten registered.  What a headache this has been.  Of course, I am trying this out, to see if anything works?

Quote from: MarsGal on December 05, 2018, 07:34:29 AMI'll be darn if I can figure out how I managed to get a "Message Icon" up at the top. I can't figure out how to turn it off, or show none. Just noticed it today. I wonder if this is a Shan the typing expert assistant insertion I hadn't noticed before? It was on Angry when I saw it. I see the things sometimes at the bottom other posts, mostly the thumbs up icon with he word Like beside it.

You can choose the message icon if you want by clicking on it and changing it, but there's no way to get rid of it entirely.

The thumbs up and the "Like" at the bottom are so you can "like" someone's post.

MarsGal

Thanks, Oldiesman. I just thought it was weird that my message icon shows up at the beginning of the date line. I don't have anything at the bottom.

Hi Everyone. My day is starting out at 34 degrees and will only get into the mid-50's with it remaining mostly cloudy all day.  The only thing on our agenda for today is a morning trip to Costco to stock up and Scott is coming to go with us and help us.  It shouldn't take us very long as our list isn't too long.  Pat and Scott will go to the meat department so Pat can pick out the meat she wants and I will get the frozen items and the item on the grocery shelves.  Over time I have noted what isle to find the various things we repeatedly buy. This avoids me having to go up the same isle repeatedly looking for another item.  Google has a neat little memo program called "Keep" that lets you make lists and when you get the item while shopping you put a little check mark in the little box and it moves the item out of the active list but is available to use in the future by removing the check mark and so I can annotate the location of the item in the store.

Yesterday. after I got home from coffee, I did get our large Christmas wreath hung between the two windows in my office facing the street.  I got it last year and we hung it on the door but Pat thought it was too big for the door and it is just right for where it is place now. It is on our front porch so is well protected from the weather.  That is all the outside decorating I will do.  Pat fixed a really delicious baked chicken dish last evening using the boneless chicken breast.  She marked the recipe as a keeper.  I got quite a bit done yesterday and was ready to retire at bedtime and had a good night's sleep.

MarsGal, I didn't think about them being able to read your meter electronically when it was inside the house.  Perhaps the required change to outside has something to do with safety otherwise it doesn't make a lot of sense.

Marilyne, I never consider your postings as long and rambling but just interesting.  Thanks for the info from ShirleyN.

Mary Ann, that was nice of Tom's former wife to remember about Norm's BD and call you.  Over the years we have belonged to several different denominations and found a great deal of similarity even in the liturgy used.  However, our present Methodist church has a more formal service to start but very nice.

ShirleyN, so good to see you have found us and left us a posting.  We will be thinking of you as you start your treatments on Monday.

Larry, it is good to find you feeling quite good this morning.

Tom went to his Bible study, then took at job at Northview Schools (not sure which one) and will finish early afternoon.

I finished labeling my Christmas message envelopes (#10) and have everything together so I can fold and put in the envelope, then stamp.  They can get in the mail tomorrow.  I had hoped, at least for the younger generation, to get them in the mail closer to the 1st because I put checks in their envelopes, but when you need help, you take what time they have to offer, so into the mailbox later today.

That's a nice idea Google has for in-store shopping.  Our online shopping shows previous purchases and it is fine except we now have four pages of previous purchases.  I find I do most of my shopping from that previous purchase page.

I think both our gas and electric meters are read electronically.  A meter reader may have to walk to get the information but they don't have to poke around bushes or get close to the meter to read it.  All of our meters are on the outside, including water.

The only thing on my agenda today is taking care of my Christmas message.  I told the cat I could pay more attention to him today; that I won't be watching TV as long as I did yesterday.  In fact, it was near 2 pm when I got dressed.  I don't get dressed early, but I do get dressed in the morning - usually.

Tom and I went to Russ' for supper last night.  I had a fish sandwich and those I've had from there have always been hot, which is how I like them.  The fish was tilapia.  I can't tell by taste one fish from another, I just like to have fish and since Tom doesn't like fish, I order it often when eating out.

Good Friday morning.

I wrote a long message over in the Soda Shoppe, as I know I have been missing for a couple days.

I kind of messed the message up a little bit and don't know What I did wrong.

But, anyway, I have been sitting here much too long and  need to get my feet propped up.

Hello to all the friends who visit here.  Will try to get back a little later.

Have a great rest of the day.

Joy

(Same thing happened here.  Don't know why the size of the font changed.  :( )

Larry, at the least, reading meters on the outside instead of having to go inside is a convenience for the meter reader. It certainly does not take near as long to walk or drive down the street and pick up the signal. They don't have to deal with grouchy pets and people, and they don't have to estimate on the days they could not get inside. We've had outdoor readings for out water for years. First the water meter reader had to come close to the meter, now they can do it from the street. I don't know how the scanner keeps from getting confused when houses are close together.

On the way back from checking George's cats, I actually saw some very light snow flurries. Now it is sunny again.

Marilyne

Our electric was out off and on all day yesterday, so I finally gave up on posting. We had received a mail notice, that they would be upgrading the poles and wiring in our area, and that the outages would be sporadic. That's exactly what happened . . .  had three outages of a little over an hour.  This neighborhood is close to town, so is one of the oldest.  There are no plans to switch to underground utilities, so they have to upgrade every few years.  We have a pole in our backyard, but they didn't do anything with it this time.

Our meters are all outside, and always have been . . . gas, electric and water.  Water is still out in front under the sidewalk.  In the old days, the meter reader used to walk around the streets once a month, and lift the cover from the meter, and write down the numbers. Since I haven' seen him in years, I'm sure they read it electronically now.  Same with Gas and Electric.  Gas on the side of the house by the driveway, and electric is in the backyard, on the wall outside the kitchen.

Today I have to get a haircut somewhere, but don't know where?  My long time hairdresser, is having some minor surgery, and won't be back for a couple of weeks.  I didn't want to have anyone else in the shop cut my hair, so I might try a "walk-in" at Super Cuts? I haven't been there for about 25 years, but will give it a try.

Mary Ann - I also like fish sandwiches, and glad you reminded me. There is a nice little seafood restaurant here in town, and I always forget about it. Delicious sandwiches and other items as well.

Larry - I'm glad to see that you're getting back into your old routine, which means you're beginning to feel better.  Nice that Scott does so much to help you and Pat.  Our son Brad would be here whenever we asked, to help us with anything, but AJ feels like he has to do everything himself!  Same attitude with housework.  I also would love to have a housekeeper come to do the heavy stuff, but AJ wants to do it. He says he will know, when it's time to let someone else take over.

shirleyn - Good to see that you made it, even if you had to re-register! :)   We hope to see you here often, to let everyone know about how your treatments are progressing.

Glad to see Shirleyn posting and hope all goes well with her treatments.  Good to see that you are feeling better, Larry.
Mary Ann, I have been looking in every now and then but just don't have much to say. 😊  Hope GloriaD is doing OK as I haven't noticed a post.  But I have been busy and sometimes I just kind of skim over the posts to look in and see if everyone is OK.
Today is D Day when Pearl Harbor was hit.  I was just 5 years old so don't really have any memories of it.  I do remember later as we had to put up dark shades, undergo rationing,  one of my distinct memories is using margarine for the first time and helping my mother squeezing the bag with yellow coloring into the white margarine.  Isn't it strange the way some memories stay with you overtime?
Hope everyone has a wonderful day.  By the way, that little weather icon is finally working correctly at the bottom of my post.  I had to change my location to Pensacola.  Guess Weather Underground was no longer recognizing Niceville.

Mary Ann

Joy, when I get to the Soda Shoppe, I'll read your message.  I don't mind reading duplicate messages when I know I'm in another folder.

I folded some of my Christmas messages and now I can stamp them.  I have to check on foreign mail (Germany and Canada) as they are quite a bit more than US postage, however, we're catching up.  I think foreign is $1.02, both the same.  I wish I had gotten started earlier because I think both countries' mail is quite a bit slower than ours.

Marilyn, while I worked downtown, I had my hair cut at one of the department stores and was very happy with the results.  When the company moved to the suburbs, I found a man near here and eventually that led to the place where I have my hair cut now.

We had light snow overnight and it was pretty but light enough that cars have made a mess of it now.

Time for a lunch before Tom arrives.  I saved some messages for him to fold, but I could have finished them.  I have enough left that I can look for others to send the pictures to.

Jean, I have memories of December 7 1941 too, Pearl Harbor Day?  I was out of high school and into first semester (only semester, it turned out) of college.  It was Sunday and Dad and Norm were in the dark room (former coal cellar) printing pictures.  I was listening to the radio when the announcement came that Japan had bombed Pearl Harbor.  I ran to the basement to tell them what I had heard.  And I have no recollection of what followed!  I do recall squeezing the margarine, but I don't recall having to darken our windows.  I still have one ration book and a red token that I think was for shoes.  We had to give up things for the war, whereas later wars did not require that.  What memories!

Mary Ann

shirleyn

Hi guys and gals!  Thanks to all who wished me well, I really do appreciate it.  I am still trying to find my way around in here.  Takes patience, I know.  Oh yes, Mary Ann, I wanted to let you and Dot know that I was thinking of Norm on his birthday. That is it for now.

shirleyn.

Mary Ann

Shirley, thanks, it's nice to know others thought of Norm on his birthday yesterday.  He would have been 89 and he's been gone three years already.

Norm always insisted on the family gathering on Christmas Eve - and at his and Dot's residence.  This will be the first year we will not have that happen because we felt it was time for the next generation to celebrate with their own families and/or in-laws.  At some time we will all get together, but I don't know when - my saying is:  I go where the car goes.  I don't try to make any plans any more because there's always a break in the plans.

Shirley, I hope you continue to improve and come back to let us know how you are doing.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Jean - Good to see you posting!  I've been wondering about Gloria de, also, and hope she is okay? I looked at her profile, but no email is showing for her.

I remember Pearl Harbor very well, considering I was only seven. I mostly recall that it was a Sunday, and my Aunt and Uncle and cousin were coming for dinner.  They arrived early, and all the adults sat around listening to the radio. My cousin Kay, and I, went off to play outside, and I mostly remember us putting on our roller skates and skating to the school grounds, where we sat with some other kids and talked about war. The boys were very much into scaring us about bombs and invasions, etc.  One year later, my Dad was drafted into the Navy, and was sent to Hawaii. As you can imagine, that was a big worry for me, because I remembered Pearl Harbor!

shirleyn

Need some advice - the time after our name is five hours off, how do I correct that?  Like after Marilyne it says Today at 8:20, and it is presently 4:05.

Mary Ann

Shirley, I show the time after Marilyn's name as 3:20 pm which I think is the time it was posted and shown in Eastern Standard Time.  Your post showed as 4:05 pm which was about an hour ago.  I think there is some place in your profile where you can correct it.  But start with clicking on your avatar.  I know someone can help you more, but I'm not the person.  You might ask Patricia (angelface).

Mary Ann

shirleyn

Thanks MaryAnn, I think I have it changed to be the correct time.  I was also not receiving emails when there was a message, but I saw that box at the bottom of the page for that change.  So time will tell.

shirleyn.

angelface555

Shirleyn, first click on your avatar which is to your left to bring up your profile. Then second click on your Forum profile and go down to Look and Layout.

The third level down is Time Zone. Click on the drop down list and find your time zone and click on it. Finally, go to the bottom of the page and ALWAYS, always click the change profile button. Lastly, check the accuracy of your time.

Edit: I see you fixed it when I was typing.

It sure is good to be back home.

Hi Everyone.  The rain has set in for a couple of days with a 100% guarantee for this afternoon and evening.  As of now I plan on just staying home today and take care of somethings here in my office, listening to Christmas music, and then this afternoon take it easy.  Scott did take us over to Costco yesterday morning and we set a new record for spending the most money on groceries at one time ever but we are now well stocked.  Unfortunately I forgot to put the curtains we have to return in the car so will have to make another quick trip over there to return them next week.  There are plenty of college basketball games on TV to watch this afternoon.

Mary Ann, I just bet those you gift with a check will be happy to get it regardless of how close it is to Christmas.  I am sure it is a relief to you to have your Christmas messages completed and in the mail. Pat can also access previous online grocery orders and I think she often refers to them in preparing the next order.  As time marches on some of our family traditions have to change. I know that ours have changed.

MarsGal, I see the city truck drive by each month and think he is reading the water meter to calculate the sewage cost since we pay our water bill to the county just North of us and not the city.  The electric company must have the ability to read the meter from their computers as have never seen a meter reader drive by.  We have no gas lines in our neighborhood.  I hope you and other to the North don't get covered up with snow this weekend.  We will not be getting snow in our area but on North of us in South Carolina they will be getting a winter mix.

Marilyne, at least you knew the reason for your electrical outages.  Our neighborhood has no poles or wires showing as all utilities are underground.  Both Pat and I use Great Clips for our haircuts.  Pat wants this one person to do her hair and I just don't care so take whoever is available.  We do really appreciate Scott's help and try not to overdo it at anytime.  Like you I hope Gloria de is OK.  I checked but I don't have her email address in my contacts.

Jean, just say hi if you can't think of anything particular to write and that way we know you are probably OK.  However, whatever you share is appreciated.  Like you I have no memories of Pearl Harbor and WWII.  I was too young to be directly impacted from it.  My sister and I used to be competitive about who got to mix the margarine and break that little die pack.

ShirleyN, it looks like you are doing very well in your postings and glad you were able to get your time of postings correctly shown. We all had to go through the same process I think.  We are glad that you are "back home" with us now.

Patricia, even though I know better on occasion I forget to hit the save button or on the postings here don't see that after I hit the Post button that a new message has appeared as I was writing and a further action to hit the Post button again is required.  I get annoyed at myself but it really isn't that important.

Mary Ann

Good morning, everyone.  From what I can see out my window, it is the start of a decent day.  Radar says no snow, but I don't see the sun shining either.  Tom has left to run some errands.  I gave him his Christmas present so he will have some money to buy gifts.  I noticed a doll in the dining room and commented on it.  Tom told me there are two girl dolls, both redheads and they are American Girl dolls.  The best thing is he bought them at a thrift shop for $20 for the pair.  I am sure the dolls are as tall as Jo and Ellie are.

I wanted my messages to go out today but they're not going to make it so they will go out Monday.  Today Tom, Dot, Jan and I will lunch at the Olive Garden and I'm going to give both Dot and Jan their messages today.  We adults do not exchange any more in our family as I know many families do not.

Shirley, it is good to see your post.  Shirley/Tisie does not post in this folder so I can just refer to you as Shirley.  I'm glad you got your time fixed.  It's annoying to have it wrong - as we did for so long.

I found out we will be celebrating our Christmas in Holland with James and his family.  They seem to get to be hosts for many family things because my condo unit is too small for a group.  We don't know which day yet.

I'll be back later, I am sure.

Mary Ann

Joy

Good morning, Larry.  And, also to the other friends who will visit here later.

It is a cold, but sunny morning here. But, hopefully,  the weather man will be correct with his forecast of NO SNOW headed our way.  Looks like it will happen a ways south of us.  Sure hope he is right.

I have some  butternut squash soup in the crockpot.  I had some at Paneara's Bread place a while back and it was so good.  I was able to find a copy-cat recipe for it, and it will taste good on this cold day.  It was real easy to put together.  I had the squash in the freezer.

I was hoping to go to an Amish market up in Shrewsbury Pa, today, but my DIL asked if I could go next week. That will work out ok.  Just going to pick up a few things that I like from there.

Nothing much else going on.  Hope everyone will have a good day.

Joy

Lucky you to be going to the Olive Garden for lunch.  I haven't been to the one near me for a long time.  I love their bread sticks.  Enjoy!!!

Mary Ann

Joy, I like the Olive Garden breadsticks too.  I used to meet a friend at an Olive Garden and we'd get salad and minestrone soup along with the breadsticks.

Let us know how your squash soup tastes.  It's probably hard to get the spices just right.

I've been reading and writing all morning and it is time to get dressed.  I think the cat is on my bed yet and I couldn't make it entirely when I got up.  He just doesn't think of things like that!

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Good Morning to Joy, Larry and Mary Ann . . . the first ones in this morning. Also good to see Shirley here last night.

Mary Ann - The two American Girl dolls will be nice gifts for Eleanor and Johanna. Good idea on Tom's part, when he saw the two redheaded dolls! All of my granddaughters had American Girls, but I don't recall ever seeing a redhead?  I have heard that there are very few Barbie dolls with red hair.
Enjoy your lunch at Olive Garden.  I've liked the food there, the few times that I've been, but haven't been been in a long time. It's quite a ways from here, through heavy heavy traffic areas.

Joy - you can save a bowl of your butternut squash soup for me! :D I also like it a lot.  Although I've never had it at Panera, it is now available at Safeway!  I bought it only once, and really liked it.  Problem is that it costs about twice as much as the other soups at Safeway. Any food, that has the name of a well known restaurant or chef in it, is always expensive.  I guess you're paying for the name.

Larry - It sounds like you're back to feeling like your normal self again?  Isn't it wonderful, that our doctors can change or add medications, and we can bounce right back to feeling well again. (maybe not perfect, but much better.)

We are back from the Olive Garden.  There were four of us and Tom and I treated Dot and Jan.  Both are widowed and Jan has an extra burden of taking care of her parents.  She said her dad now required being fed and her mother's memory is regressing a few years.  Jan has had to give up her full time job with Hospice because of her folks but she is working part time.  She also is not with her church now because their services were too early for her - also because of her folks.  Her son lives in CA and her daughter lives in IN so they can't help her, however, she does have nephews and great-nephews who do help out with their grandparents.  The young ones aren't always available because of school and/or jobs.  While I often say it isn't easy being older, it isn't always easy being younger either with so many responsibilities of today.

Tom and I both had Chicken Garabino (or words to that effect) and both of us thought it bland.  I brought much of mine home but will season it a bit.  I would not order it again.  I don't like spicy food, as Italian often is, but I don't like bland, either.  Dot had Chicken Alfredo and it also needed spice.  We had a good time, however, just talking.  We had not seen Jan for some time so it was nice she came alone and could bring us up to date on her family and we brought her up to date on our activities.

For the most part, we've had a sunny day so the fact our temp is in the mid-twenties to 30 doesn't matter.

While we were there, Tom got a call from a friend of all of us, asking him to take her to Aldi's.  She doesn't drive and has a son who won't lift a finger for her.  If she called Dot (as she usually does), Dot was with us so could not answer her phone.  Tom just got home from taking Else to the store.  We both agreed we had a good time and it was good to see Jan (Terry's widow).

I've never had butternut squash soup that I know of so the next time I go to Panera's I might order some.  I usually have the Cheese Broccoli soup.

I'm going to see if I can manage a nap, but first I've got to see what is still waiting for me in S&F.

Hi Everyone.  It has been a very cold, windy and rainy night and the morning continues this way.  It is suppose to rain all morning and then the chances go down substantially around noon. While I stayed home all day yesterday I am ready and plan on attending Sunday School and Church this morning.  If it isn't too rainy when Church is over I will pick up something to bring home for our dinner.  Last evening we enjoyed stuffed peppers from Costco,  a big lettuce and carrot salad and a delicious cookie. I noticed my heat pump was making a terrible noise this morning and found it was freezing up.  So I have switched it to the emergency heat setting and hope that soon resolves the issues and keeps us warm in the interim.  I do have an electric space heater that I may have to call into service.  It is going to stay in the  40 degrees today.

Mary Ann, it seems rather silly for adult family members, perhaps beyond parents and children exchanging gifts.  For a number of years our extended family would get together at Christmas and we drew names, which was doable and still provided the enjoyment of gift giving without breaking the bank and there were no longer small children to be considered.  I read something recently about how many people are still paying off what they  charged last Christmas.  It is nice that James and his family are picking up the responsibilities of hosting your family for holidays and special events. Jan certainly has her hands full.

Joy, if the rain we are getting is falling as snow North of us, especially in North Carolina and Virginia, then they are going to be getting a lot.  I hope you were able to get to the Amish market.  To my knowledge none of those markets exist around here.

Marilyne, like you all we haven't been to the Olive Garden since we moved so that is in about 4 years.  We had an Olive Garden built close to where we used to live and a couple of the men's groups went out to lunch often and frequently went to Olive Garden.  I have been feeling pretty good the last few days and just hope it continues.
