Title: FYI: Upcoming site upgrade
Post by: Oldiesmann on November 10, 2018, 07:52:14 PM
Just a heads up to everyone, I will be upgrading the site to SMF 2.1 in the coming weeks. For those who aren't members of CP (another site of Pat's that I just did the upgrade on), the new version includes quite a few new features as well as a theme that's optimized for devices of all sizes, including smartphones and tablets. The new features include the ability to embed YouTube videos, the ability to like posts, a built-in notifications system, post/PM drafts (start working on a post, then save your work and come back to it later without having to keep the site open) and a few other things.

I will keep everyone posted as to when the change is happening so you're not caught off guard :)

Thank you Oldiesmann, that sounds quite interesting, especially the post/PM drafts.
Just wondering: does the new version also includes the possibility of a chatroom?

I did find something simple that should work for our needs, but I'll need to play with it a bit more to make sure :)

Oldiesmann - any chance that we will ever be able to post photos directly from our desktop?

Oldiesman, I just want to say thank you for all you do. Not an easy job but you keep us up and running smooth!

Marilyne, that is already possible if you have resized to 650 pixels on the longest side and compressed to under twenty. You simply click on the below Attachments and other options. Directly below, you will see and click on Choose file. That opens to a folder window that you can use to navigate on your computer to anywhere you store your photos. Click on the photo chosen and to the right, click the down arrow and click on Inline full-size image. To follow through, simply click on the word Post on the lower right.

For those who are curious, here's an idea of what things will look like after the upgrade. I'm still testing a few things to make sure everything will work properly first...

Current plan as of now is to do the upgrade late Thursday/early Friday (midnight or 1am eastern, 5/6am GMT). Still need to do a bit more testing of a couple things before I do the upgrade :)

Still planning on going through with the upgrade late tonight / early tomorrow morning (Thursday night / Friday morning). I'll let you know if that changes.

Upgrade has been completed successfully :)

I am still tweaking a couple things so you might see something change, but if you run into any issues or have any questions, let me know.

Note that if the time is incorrect in the forum, click on your name in the upper left corner, then click on "Account Settings" and choose the appropriate timezone from the list.

I have two questions:
a) How can I use both Bold and Color without having to highlight twice?  It was remaining highlighted in the previous format.
b) somehow I don't seem to manage posting a photo in the body of the post. How is it done? Dragging it in from the desktop was my way of posting it.

There is a problem with the link to
What's For Dinner?  It does not open the discussion.

I'm not sure about the first question. For the second one, if you want to attach it to a post, you'll have to do it from the full reply screen (not quick reply). Just expand the "Attachments and other options" section and drag the image to the appropriate spot.  Then click the upload button and click the appropriate button to insert it into your post

Michael, coding a post took me five tries as what I put in often disappeared or only partially worked in the finished post and had to be redone. Why is the add image to post shown in the message block and outside? It shouldn't be in the message block since it is shown below. I am also finding broken links.

I know a number of folks are complaining and talking about staying away until all changes are fixed and others are asking why the fix to fix what isn't broken? Attempting numerous times to edit a simple post before posting it as you want it to be will stop many members from continuing. Perhaps if some info had been released beforehand on what to expect may have helped?

Like Vanilla, mail notification is useless if it brings to the home page and not where it should.

I have never used quick reply. For posting a picture -in the main reply screen I  had to add the coding for it to show in normal size. Where are the icons for 'image', 'url link'- it was so clear before!

Thanks for fixing smilies, etc. We know it is a lot of work.

The buttons just look different now because this version uses a different editor. The icon for images is directly to the right of the YouTube icon, and the link one is next to the one after that. You can hover over each icon to see what it's for.

Something is messing up the URLs in the notification emails... I'll look into that tomorrow when I get a chance (it's 3:15am here so I'm heading to bed). For now you can get to the post/message by removing the ";" in front of the first = sign in each of those first two links.

Oldiesmann...this is the email notification link sent to me of your post...but I see Bubble has already shown you this...It seems there are good and bad points to our new website page layouts...as they say..." its swings and roundabouts..."

Some email notifications are now saying...

" You have been quoted in the post titled "Re: FYI: Upcoming site upgrade" by ( members name ) "

other notifications are stating...

" A reply has been posted to a topic you are watching by ( members name ) "

Neither bring me to the actual posting...Hm, maybe I need to adjust my notification preferences, otherwise I shall be getting too many notifications in my email box......

I had 22 S&F emails in my spam all directing me to a blank page. Since I do not use notifications, I'm assuming this is another error? Also when you try to code, using bold, italic, font and font size, it appears with the b in front and all other coding, open and closing, on the end. I have to put in the code instead of being able to use this editor's code setup for it to work.

Yes, the URLs in the notification emails is a known issue. I'm looking into that.

I'm not sure why you're having problems with the editor. It's working fine for me - if I select text and click a button it surrounds that text with the appropriate tags. What browser are you using?

I am using Chrome, and I'm aware that others are highlighting the entire message for each type of code, each time, but that does seem unnecessary when before you just typed your message, highlighted and then clicked on your code.

I was able to fix my time but I'm still attempting to find the last post in a forum. If you click Updated Topics, it takes you to the page but not to the last post. If you click Unread Posts it takes you to all the forums you do not read.

Unfortunately that's how things work with the new editor at the moment. I'll do some digging and see if I can change that though.

I had 47 spam posts, Michael, after posting about the 22 earlier ones, all stating "You have been quoted in the post titled "Re: FYI: Upcoming site upgrade." And 15 just now. I haven't posted more than say five posts overall.

If like me, you are finding you have been getting far too many topic email notifications...just found out how to cut them back..( well I hope this does the trick )....Click on your " name "- top left corner...click on " notifications "...where you see the " orange  notifications preferences " click on the " watched topics " button to the side, then the list of topics - rooms comes up, just tick in the box to the side of the red " receive emails and alerts " that you dont want to receive, scroll to the bottom, then click on the " unnotify " button, bottom right...hopefully your computers email box wont receive 50 plus unwanted notifications posts like I was receiving...

Jackie, it sounds like both of us are receiving the same type of 50 or more daily notifications that we did not request. The other annoyance is not having the last post, only the forum page when linking as well as having to code three times for what was previously done once and no longer having a standardized photo or graphic sizing system. Tell me again how this change benefits us?

jane

If they don't remember their password they should be able to reset it. If not, let me know and I can reset it for them. The reason everyone is having to login again is due to increased security features that forces everything to be secure (even the "cookie" that remembers their login info). Once they get logged in as long as they choose "forever" for the time to remain logged in, they shouldn't have to login again.

I can disable the features if it's a huge deal but I'd prefer to keep things secure.

I am not sure why you're getting spammed with notification emails. I'll look into that when I get a chance.

What exactly is the issue with photos now? I can do my best to fix any issues.

They should be 650 pixels on the longest side and compressed by 20 kb and that is not the tiny graphics shown. They should all show as in post #3450.
Title: Re: FYI: Upcoming site upgrade
Post by: Oldiesmann on November 17, 2018, 07:44:21 PM
The forum software doesn't change the picture size or the file size. It only rejects them if they're over a certain size. I'm not sure what the issue is.

The "tiny graphics" are not shown because I have it set not to show them under the post if you've already embedded them in the post. If you want them to stay there even when they're embedded in the post I can change that setting.

Michael, I'm sorry, we're communicating at cross-purposes. The photos and or graphics DO NOT SHOW at the correct size but they DO SHOW as tiny postage-sized images. I gave the post #3450 as an example of how it should look but does not.

I'm going to take a break as these "changes" seem more problematic than worthwhile.

Oh, OK. I'll look into what I can do to fix that without having to manually edit each of the posts. The way the forum handles inline attachments is different than how the old add-on handled them.

I changed her password at her request;  She could get in then.

If you are going to stick around to suss out many of the issues remaining with this new editor, might I suggest Norm's B&T or Bosum Buddies and others besides the Soda Shop or why so many posters are leaving?

Finding a resolution as to why three known or more people are daily having three, five or more spammed S&F notifications purported to come from you might be a help even if we are older.

What have we accomplished with the latest change?
What I notice is that it is more difficult to find things (assuming they are still there). Why do we keep fixing things that are working well?
Finding unread posts --- where did that go. Not surprising some leave (or threaten to).

The link for unread posts is at the top of the page on the right side directly below the menu.

The upgrade added a lot of features (drafts, likes, mentions, etc.) and a new look that works well regardless of the screen size of the device you're browsing from among other things.

Oldiesman,  I might as well add my little 2 cents worth here of complaints. LOL  It would be helpful if you could make your messages a little bigger and bolder.  It is difficult for some of us to read the lighter and smaller print.  Thanks !  Maybe that will make it easier for some to understand things a little better.

I have begun getting e-mails this morning from Seniors and Friends; subject line says I've been quoted in this particular discussion - no others have been mentioned.   (I haven't opened them.)

I blocked the first nine in my web mail server but 4 more have come through to my e-mail program which is sending all of them directly to Junk Mail.

Does this seem like a Hack that's switching senders?
Title: Re: FYI: Upcoming site upgrade

Callie, all you can do is go into your profile and turn off all notifications. This will keep them out of your regular email, but for a while, they will still show up in your spam. None of us have found a way so far to stop this particular gitch.

Angelface,  I've never used Notifications which is probably why they're appearing in Spam.   I've "blocked senders domain" in my Outlook Express program.  Will report if they keep showing up.

Callie, I've never used S&F Notifications either but that didn't stop 300-500 daily notifications all saying the same sentence and all purported to be from Michael. I marked it as spam, but I was still getting five to seven showing up in my regular email, besides the hundreds in spam.

By going to my account profile and marking no notifications, (Even when showing no notifications and or alerts requested);  All my Gmail did was send it to spam, and I wanted it GONE!!   Which the profile accomplished.

I'm wondering if it's related to the auto-refresh feature of the shoutbox, as this isn't happening on the other site I recently upgraded and we don't use the shoutbox feature there. I'll look into disabling that and see if it helps at all.

I still get some but not in the hundreds like before :(
Thankfully in Gmail they come "grouped together" so that the subject line will show 12 or 23 etc in just one line.  I get maybe one or two dozen of that.
For image, after resizing, I have to manually write length and height to see them post as in the old version. It's a pain!

It would be beneficial to remove the "Add image to post and upload to gallery" line from the inside of the message block and it is unnecessary as it is listed below anyway. It is distracting as it is now.

I wish I knew what was causing that. I changed it to only send out notifications once every 5 minutes so it shouldn't be flooding you. Also, you should be able to just leave the height and width at "auto" when inserting the image into your post. You only have to fill that out if you want to show it a certain size.

Michael, I would eliminate both of the "Add images to post and upload to the gallery. " My reason is that the code expects you bring a photo from somewhere else. And it is supposedly added to your gallery which from what I've heard it doesn't.

In my opinion, with seniors, it would be simpler to add it in the gallery section, with its info for posting. Also, Bubble could help you in writing code to help us use a system that would show the photo in the correct forum size.

If that were underneath a posting box and not inside it, in the Gallery, it would be helpful. Also, a feature allowing you to use and upload a graphic/photo besides the gallery as many store photos on their computer and not in the gallery.

Perhaps in one section, dealing with where the photo/graphic is uploaded from and a second, dealing with the size of the item. This coding could show up at the bottom, outside of the posting box each time you clicked on reply.

The attachments feature allows you to upload photos directly from your computer - you just have to click the big "Reply" button at the top/bottom of the page (above the first post and below the last post on the page) or click "Preview" from the "Quick Reply" box.

As far as the gallery thing goes, it does seem to upload it to your gallery but you still have to go there afterwards and copy the code to add it to your post. I'll remove the "Add image" links until that's fixed.

Thank you Michael. I found the big "reply" at the beginning and that finally got me out of the maddening quick reply where I did not have the formatting nor the attachment from my desktop. The "reply" at the bottom was stuck on quick reply and I could not find my way to normal view. Phewwwww Thanks again! :)

Michael, I apologize as your reply left me more confused. So, I went back to photos and tried using attachments. I was able to click on a .png to upload but first, its 650 pixels size showed HUGE, then at 500 pixels, tiny so I backtracked to 600 which showed at postage stamp size so I removed it.

I think I've fixed it for the time being. There's a setting to resize images when showing them under posts (leftover from before inline attachments were a feature). Disabling that seems to prevent them from getting resized, so I'll leave that disabled for the time being.

I use an IPAD, and that's not an option I want since I'd have to change it for every other site I go to.

If others are happy with the default print size, I can live with it.  I just hate to see more people leaving because they don't want to try to do the coding or the highlighting or resetting their settings for one website in order to read the tiny print.

Then you have to click yes or no, to make it go away. Is that supposed to be an upgrade?  We got along fine without it in the past. Is there any way to get rid of that box forever? :knuppel2:

Michael, I have something happening that is new.  I do not use the Spell Check since I'm a pretty good speller.  It isn't happening here in this message, but in the folders the red line starts when I type a word and continues until I am nearly finished with the word.  It happens with every word.

If there is some way to get it to quit, I'd appreciate it but if not, I can live with it.  If I'm doing something wrong, please let me know.

That's the browser's built-in spellcheck feature, not the one here (the one here only works when you click the Spell Check button).

Still, it seems like it takes too many steps now, to post a message, compared to the old way? Then we seem to miss lots of posts, because we have to either scroll up or down to see a message. We used to be able to click on "See new replies to your posts", and the replies would show up. I know the "unread posts" is at the top right, but it isn't the same? Not sure why that is?

I haven't made any postings for a day or two on this forum but this morning I came into 137 emails of which at least 120 - 125 were from notifications from our site, even from  rooms I haven't posted in for some weeks, many being back-dated...I had originally unticked these rooms for notifications so have no Idea why they have started up again...I usually only come in to a maximum of 30 normal emails but was overwhelmed with the amount of emails this morning...I have now gone into my S & Fs account and unticked them all, lets see what happens..

Also when I press the preview button before posting, it only shows part of my post, not all, as it once did, so in that case how can I look for spelling mistakes before hitting that post button...
Title: Re: FYI: Upcoming site upgrade

I made some changes to the notifications code recently to fix the problem with duplicate notifications and such. It appears that the bug with the code (prior to my changes) caused it to miss things, so that's why you're suddenly getting old notifications. That should hopefully clear out soon.

I have no idea why it would only show part of the post when you click "preview". It's showing all of it for me.

Michael, your post was small and probably would show the entire post.  I recently clicked on Preview to see what I would get.  I write "books" and it did not show maybe the bottom third of my post and I couldn't move it.  I will say I usually do not Preview my posts, posting instead and using Quick Edit if I need to make a correction.

I removed it for the main button on the board index. It must use different code for the one shown for each board. I'll take care of that when I get a chance and will also look into the issue with message previews when I have time.

I've removed the confirmation for marking posts as read from the message index.

Unfortunately I can't reproduce the issue with previewing posts. I tried it with 5 paragraphs worth of dummy text from lipsum.com - normal size, bold, size 7, etc. and each time it showed all of the text when I clicked preview.

What browser/operating system are you using? That will help me figure out if it's a browser issue or not.

Oldiesmann...
...if that question was for me?.." what browser are you using " (as I did pose that query along with Marylyne )...I am using Google Chrome but have just gone into Internet Explorer and tested a 4 line post in text size 3 and 4, and the preview is the same as if I done the same in my usual Chrome, only one line of my post shows as a preview...

I'll try it again in Windows when I have a chance (I primarily use Linux) but I haven't been able to reproduce the issue at all in Chrome, although there is a recently discovered bug causing text to be dropped if there's an ampersand in the post (the ampersand and everything following it will get dropped from the preview).

Michael,  could you change Unread Posts and Updated Topics clickables to bold print like Previous Topic and Next Topic are?  That would be more "eye-catching" and easier to see.

Sure. I'll look into that when I get a chance.

All done now :)

If you don't see them in bold, hold down CTRL and SHIFT and press "R" to force your browser to reload the CSS file.

Michael,  I'll bet more people could find the Go Down, Go Up and other "instructions in boxes" if they were also in bold.

I'll see what I can do there. That one will be a bit more work as the style used there applies to all buttons, not just those.

Having all the buttons in bold might be helpful.  Easier for aging eyes to see.

Another update for everyone... A new version of the forum system has recently been released which fixes quite a few bugs and such, so I will be upgrading the site again in the next week or so. The changes won't be nearly as drastic this time around and there shouldn't be too much of a disruption. I'll post again when I have a better idea of when the upgrade will take place.

Michael, we lost quite a few members, in the last upgrade, who never returned.  Those of us who are still here, have adjusted to the new format. Maybe it would be best to leave things the way they are?

Michael.

Thank you very much for letting us know
about the forthcoming upgrade to our system.

Even though upgrades are not always fun, it
is important to know that they are very
necessary in order to stay current with
the software that we use in here.

Staying currant is just part of what is
necessary so that we don't crash and burn...

Your work is much appreciated.

Junee, if you come back here and see this, today (Feb 12) is the birthday for both Larry and Gloria de, and we'd like you to go to Norm's Bait & Tackle because Gloria was asking about you.

The upcoming update won't bring many changes at all - it's just a minor update that fixes bugs and such.

Oh no, 117 S&F's email notifications, I need to put a stop to these, its just like before...another 5 within seconds...

Edited: Think I done it correctly this time, now I fathomed out how I done it last time..

I have the same problem - but almost double the amount you received and all notifications are from last year posts!
What did you do to stop it Jackie?

Junee, there should be a box to tick that will allow you to stay logged in permanently if that is your preference..

I never receive S&F notifications since I turned it off after the last redo and was flooded with hundreds daily.

Junee, when I have to re-sign into S&F, I always use the one in the upper left, not the sign in at the center of the page. That center sign in has caused issues. I hope this helps?

Patricia...Like you i turned it off after our last redo session but somehow its been turned on again, like Bubble I have been flooded...Seems I have now turned it back off, I have played around and tinkered with the settings, again...at least all seems calm at the present time...

Let's hope. I discovered a new issue in the PSP forumn. You can see the graphics until you go to post. Then there are no graphics visable, just their coding. It's hard to comment on what you can't see.

I'm copying two posts here from Shirleyn who is also having that notification issue and one from MarsGal.

Thanks.  Another 98 messages in the last two hours.  Geesh!

Angelface, where is the S&F account?  I know I have been there before but in my muddled mind I cannot remember.

Found it and the notification was already turned off.  In the meantime I have received another 200 emails.  Sigh!

Help!!  I have been receiving about 200 emails from 3:30 this morning from this site.  I had not changed anything, so do not know how to stop them.  Anyone have any suggestions?

This one is from MarsGal;
Uh oh, I'd better go look at my email again. I got one, just one, earlier today about a post of mine from early December that Oldiesman re-posted as a quote. I was scratching my head on that one.

I have not done anything to turn off notifications, but those multiple mails stopped flooding me.  Michael must have fixed it.  Thank you Michael!

About Angel's problem with graphics, I don't understand it since no other mentioned it.
Don (radioman) did experience something else. When he went to Photos now and then, he could read my post but could not see the photos in that post, only a notice : not allowed on this board or something like that!
I wonder now if maybe suddenly he was not registered.  I'll have to check that with him.

Instead of seeing the other posted graphics when I am replying to a post or attempting to comment on a graphic, I don't see the graphics, only their coding. I'll post a screenshot.

I just tried again this morning and the issue seems to have been fixed. I will try again later to doublecheck.

Are the semi headings such as updated topics, unread posts and the like going to be bolded again for easier viewing?

That's an issue caused by a change in how the inline attachments work in the new version. If you see any of those, let me know and I can fix the posts.

Yes. I can do that. Which ones were bolded - just "Unread Posts" and "Updated Topics"? I seem to remember that most of the buttons in posts ("Quote", etc.) were bold as well.
