Hello. hello!

I hope your needles did not remain idle while Seniors and Friends was on strike   ;D

I am still working on  the afghan I started on this pattern https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYPr1TasKm4&feature=youtu.be (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYPr1TasKm4&feature=youtu.be)

I love it!  I'll post a photo when...  I am still thinking of a border around it to finish it  nicely

Hi to all again.  I did have to sign in again so finally I'm here.  I'll check your pattern Bubble but I'm making an afghan also.  Three colors, well four, I guess.  The two blues are almost the same so I'm alternating them.  Plus tan and white ripple pattern.  I was able to make one from start to finish in December and January when I was in Florida visiting the family.  This time the youngest finally got hers.  It was one large granny square with extentions out the ends to make it rectangular.  Both of these are using my stash.  I promise myself to not buy more till I use most of what I have up.  I spied some bright pink but made myself put that box back and get back to what I already started.

What are the rest of you working on?

Mine is mainly white, with lines of yellow, light green and purple.  Very  summery!

Well a double WELCOME BACK . It took me awhile to get back in but happy to see that SueB. caught up with us.  Missed you and glad to see you O.K.
Thought the family had moved from Florida.

Sue, I have so many of these left overs especially after I received from our craft circle that closed down completely. Now I don't dare go near a 'wool shop' so as not to be tempted.  I did have to go to get more white for my afghan so as to be able to finish it.
After that I'll start on sleeveless vest (from the stash) for next winter for my grandson.  He is growing so fast that nothing will fit from one year to the other.

Jeanne, thanks for the welcome back.  My husband died a year ago, late 2014 actually.  I have been busy with the aftermath of that.  So only a few months ago did I even have time to do needlework or go online for fun.  So much of that was for estate issues.

Bubble, that sounds pretty with with and some color.  Glad we are finding each other here.

SueB.

Yes, I remember your husbands passing. Was sorry to hear it.  Takes time after it happens. Settling Estates get crazy but now are easier than 10 years or so ago. Computers have helped.
Maybe we should have a Forum on such as that on here.  Could be a couple of good retired  lawyers reading S and F. that would help some. I was thinking we had one in Seniornet. Maybe it was another forum awhile back.

Good thing you came in prior to S and F closing down.  You would have wondered what happened to it.
Are you still in the same home. Same city?

Sue, the crocheting helped me a lot when Ben died two years ago.  It kept my thoughts concentrating on something else than myself having to deal with all kinds of issues.

I'm a quilter by passion, however I was taught all the other needleworks as a child.  I love scrappy quilts and ones made out of fabric left over from another project with something new added.
I'm attaching a quilt made out of leftover fabric from my daughter's wedding dinner napkins.  It's a Bonnie Hunter block called Box Kites.  I did add a light polkadot fabric to make it more youthful.  It's for my 3 1/2 yr old granddaughter.

When I figure out how to make Photo Albums under my profile I'll share more.

No I haven't.  I'm in Southern CA. However I did live in Louisville for a few months when my husband & I were in transition to Japan. Didn't have any of my stuff with me.  All packed and shipped overseas.
I do want to go at some point though.  My step daughter just lives over in Owensboro.

WOW! that looks like a time consuming quilt with all those squares.  I have never tried quilting nor seen it done but it must be a treasure to own.

How long did this one take to finish?  It must have been a great occupation when there was no TV or computer to while the hours.  With internet I even have problems reading books lol

My mother pieced beautiful quilts.  I have the last one she did, which is a little different since it is an applique top and not pieced.  I wanted to do quilts like she did but when I took a quilting class I learned very quickly that I just did not have the talent or patience for it.

I love the colors that you used in your quilt, tuckyquilter.

It must require a lot of patience.  I did hear that now it is mostly done with a sewing machine.  I wonder if it looks any different?

That quilt is a work of art.  I admire you for taking the time to do that and you must get great satisfaction working on it and looking at it later.  Glad you posted.

Post by: Joy on April 03, 2016, 10:49:16 AM
Bubble,  oh my yes!!!  There is a big difference in hand quilting and machine quilting.  I would not have the patience to do any hand quilting.  It is kind of a lost art, but  many  people still do it.   The Amish people make beautiful hand quilted quilts. They have what they call Quilting Bee's.  A group of ladies get together and sit around a big quilting frame and do their work.  If you go to many Amish communities you can always visit a home or community center where you will find a group quilting.  And, all ages, too.

Many people now who make lots of quilts for organizations will do the machine quilting.  Another way is to tie thread at regular intervals over the whole quilt to help keep the backing and batting in place.  I have done both machine quilting and tie quilting.

Now, many of the big quilt shops have a machine that is called  a Long Arm Quilting machine.  It is a huge machine that you place the quilt on and the machine will do various quilting designs.  They are beautiful,  but you can still tell the difference  between that and the hand quilting.

I used to make small children's quilts for the Linus Project.  That is an organization named after the character Linus,  in the Charley Brown cartoons.  Linus was the little kid who always carried a blanket around.  There are many, many chapters and groups all over the country who make quilts for sick children, underprivileged children, or any child who is in need of some  TLC ( Tender loving care).  I am not sure if it is a world wide organization or not.  I mostly crochet small baby afghans now.  Not as time consuming as making quilts.  The chapter that I donate to has donated over 93,000 blankets and quilts since it started back in 2001.  They have to be handmade.
It is a very satisfying feeling to receive a note from a mother of a child that has received on of your blankets.  Each person's name and address is attached to each afghan or quilt.  There is a lot of work involved with volunteers doing pick-ups from sites where people can leave their items,  labeling each item, and then delivering them to the various sites.

I am sure there are others who can add their interests in making quilts.

Joy

Good morning, on a very windy day, 60mi. gust.

Years ago I started in a quilting class, we started out with a pillow, I chose th boy with a big hat, he must have a name, but I forgot.   I never finished the class, as the teacher said in front of everyone, she had never had anyone in her class that did the worst stitching she had ever seen.  It sure was not a help with me to continue.  My husband grandmother from Ala. made beautifl quilts, and they were all hand stitched.

At Homemakers, I have made the quilts that you tie, for aids babies.

As the Amish area is close to me I see some beautiful quilts they make. None stitched on machines.

Now we are having the yearly quilt show here in town next week. A group of quilters make them . some are for sale but one is given to each new  child who lives in the Orphanage here. they do it once a year but each is only given one and has to take good care of it.
I always thought that nice afghans would be lot safer for them to use and not as much work to do. I know my GC. use to go through a afghan pretty fast as can use them all over the house watching TV etc. Easier to wash also

I now remember  being in one such Amish place in NC and enviously fingering those quilted heavy bed covers, feeling so sorry I could not fold one in my suitcase.  The idea of so much overweight stopped me, plus I would have needed a new suitcase just for that. They were beautiful and in such tasteful colors.

Hello to all on t his spring morning.  Actually it's fall on the southern hemisphere.  Nice days, warmer than it should be.  But I'm rapidly using up my yarn stash, now on a ripple afghan.  I have done baby hats, kid and adult hats knit and crochet.  Now I'm having to deal with 20 fruit trees and work being done on the house.  So the needles and hooks are silent.  But I'll get back to it all.  As I was looking around I found some bright pink.  That may be my next project if I can figure what to make with it.  Are you all motivated to create these days?

Is it thin pink? a lacy shawl maybe?
Title: Re: Yarn, Needles and Crafts
Post by: SueB on April 09, 2016, 03:40:50 PM
Well, Bubble, that's an idea.  It's actually very average yarn so not so thin.  But a shawl would work.  I think there are two skeins.

Meanwhile, I'm doing yard work.  Blossoms are out.  Old leaves are there too.  So I still have my afghan to work on between outdoor activities.

Bubble, I have joined you with plumbing problems, two weeks ago, I needed a new kitchen faucet, as it was linking.  Now to day, I went to do a load of wash, and run out of hot water.  My water tank is only 7 years old.

After he changed and fixed the pipes under the floor tile, the toilet started leaking!

I also need a new faucet installed in the back bathroom.  I thought my kitchen sink had a problem also.  Was water leaking under the sink.  I got under and tightened  the pipe connectors and that seems to stop the leak.  I have to get water shut off outside and to cold for now. So will replace soon as warms up.
I have lost my handy man after 35 years. Hard getting people over here to do small jobs.

Maryz, I've also been to the quilt museum in Paducah twice.  Both times were on road trips--one time we spent the night in Paducah and went on to Illinois to visit Bill, Dawn, and Andy.  The other time we were on our way to West Virginia.  The quilts are simply beautiful.  We have an active quilting club here in Auburn.  They display new ones every month at our public library.  I have a couple of really old ones that Bob's mother and grandmother made years ago that I've always used on beds, not for display and they are wearing out.  I'll miss them when I have to quit using them.  And both Kris and Dawn quilt, but they do machine quilting.  I have several small pieces from both of them.

Alpiner1.  Love those slippers. I had a pattern but never tried. Loved doing slippers. Only thing is 3 years ago I did 24 pairs as Christmas presents all in the famiy along with 4 Afghans.  Put my wrists out.  Now crochet since but think I will try and finish a afghan I started then. Start soon.  The slippers I made were a big hit but now as nice as yours. Much easier.

Hello to you needlework folks.  I have not stopped in here in a long time.  I'm busy trying to get rid of as much stuff as I can.  This house and acre are too much for me.  No time for fun.  Well, that isn't totally true.  But it's much work and I want a simpler place so I can do more fun and less work.  So speaking of unfinished projects, I have an afghan going and it sits on the couch.  Maybe with getting back to S&N I'll be inspired to get my work done on the afghan.  So nice to read all your notes on your projects.

SueB.  Good to see you back in here. It has been awhile.  I also have got to get started on clearing out so much stuff.  Not in the mood to move yet but its getting harder to get people to work on things that come up and need doing.
Are the family still living in Florida?
I also have a afghan only half way finished. Think I am going to ask this lady if she will finish it for me. Crochet seems to bother my thumbs to much. That is my only place but now it seems like need thumbs so much.  No one in the family seems to bother with E-M anymore. they are into Texting.  Again need thumbs.  Don't like to do it anyway. Phones are to small.
Are you still using you Tablet?

Alpiner,   Your slippers are very nice.    I like the way they come up high on the front of the foot.   I wear the ballet type slippers around the house but I do have trouble with them slipping off at the heel sometimes and would like to have slippers that stay put better.    :)    I haven't done any needlework in a while so maybe I'll take another look at the patterns for slippers.

Jeanne, the family does live in Florida.  Son is in Seattle.  I've seen him several times this year.  Heading to FL soon.  Maybe I'll take my needlework with me to finish there.  I hardly use the tablet at all.  I take it when I travel to check e-mail and do games.  I recall some time back spending lots of time looking for pattern online for knit and crochet.  I printed out many of those.  Guess I'll have to go look at what I have already.  Not much posting here of late.  Hope you are all well.

Enjoy your trip to Florida. Hope you are not driving in the TG Traffic. Just saw on the news that traffic on most interstates, specially Int. 1 Florida was moving at 16 miles a hour. Least you will have some sunshine.  Enjoy your Christmas there.

It seems as though our long lovely fall weather has gone and it is getting cold and stormy here in Western NY.   JeanneP,   you don't need to bother sending any more of  those wintery blasts out our way.    ;)
Anyway since the cold weather has returned to our neck of the woods,  I'm really enjoying my hand knit wooly socks.    I already have a pair on for the evening and my feet are toasty.   Thanks to those of you here who encouraged my along with knitting them a few years back.

Good afternoon, cloudy day and warm for this time of year, To morrow it is suppose to be very cold, and i am suppose to go to Red Hat luncheon, at the food court in the mall, Our Jan. and Feb. meeting were decided to do at the mall.  If it snows that day we do not have to worry about restaurant reservations . Which  has happen before, if you were not  able to drive, the restaurant still wanted their money.

JeanneP, I loved that glitter bottle idea. I made a copy, and will teach it at home makers. Thanks, I am always looking for ideas. I have already taught the fingerless gloves. 10 people took the class.

Lindancer - I did not know you were known as deAngel previously.  Thanks for updating this information.

SueB:  Hug to you on getting your life in a different order.  You are right to take time to make any decisions - wishing the best for you.  We are in Tucson for the winter and it gets more and more difficult to return to our high altitude home in Colorado (for Don) each spring.  The children live there, of course.  We don't have to make any decisions now - but who knows what is to come.

Anyway, I stopped in to rest my knees - aching because I am trying to sort out a quilt on the floor and it isn't as easy as home where I have a flannel on a wall - so much nicer to be able to look straight at the quilt layout.

Alpiner,  I, too love the slippers you made for your husband.

Like MaryC,  I have trouble keeping slippers on my heels.  I like these because, like you, I think they would stay put better with the fronts  coming up higher.

Alpiner,  any chance of where I could find the pattern or would you be willing to share the pattern???  I like the wider toe, also.  They do look very comfortable.

Thanks.

Alpiner,  I was able to find a used copy of that leaflet on Amazon and just now ordered it.  I saw a picture of the cover on the leaflet and  liked a couple pair of the slippers.  ( good old Amazon... can usually find whatever you are looking for.)

I hadn't looked at this site for a while, so glad it showed up on my  "unread posts" notice today.

Estimated delivery time is a couple weeks, but things usually come quicker than what they tell you.

Those slippers look just like what I am looking for.

I went back to April 2016 and don't find them and so maybe not in. Can you show again?

Alpiner,  I am still waiting for the little booklet that has the slipper pattern directions.  Don't know why it is taking so long????

I am anxious to make those slippers.  I had found another pattern and made a pair, but I made them too big.  I wasn't thinking about them stretching so much.  Not sure if I can tighten them up or not.  I did put a draw string through them, but that didn't help too much.

Just anxious to get that booklet.  Nice that your husband loves his slippers so much.  I am hoping I will like mine just as much.  LOL

Love that baby afghan. Been a lot of years now since I made one. Babies seem to come often in my family but not for awhile. I made so many afghans that we all have enough. Maybe I will get back into crochet again in winter. My wrist sort of gave out.  So hot here. Been mid 90s for last 8 days. Just awful. Feel like just loafing around.

Alpiner,  That is really a pretty pattern in this afghan.  I just watched the video for making it and after you once get going,  it does sound pretty simple.  I have never heard of that yarn.  I have used the Caron yard, but never seen the "Caron Cakes".  I like how it changed colors in the middle.

I am working on a baby afghan for a great-granddaughter. I had made her one and her mom said it was too pretty to use.  So, I am making another one so that she will have something nice and soft and comfy when it gets cold again.  I am just using one of the patterns from the Linus Project website.  The slanted shell stitch which goes quickly.

Thanks for sharing.

There is no carving on the back , just soft scallops across the back . We had it recovered with the fabric in the picture . Husband's parents bought it in the  mid 1960's .

Alpiner, your newly finished quilt is lovely.  The colors are so pretty together.  I haven't knit anything in a long while--it is so hot here in Alabama in the summer that it just isn't fun!  What do you do with your finished projects?

Alpiner.

That is so pretty. love colours. Now I would love it for the small round table in my bedroom. Perfect colours I also do not crochet anymore. Doubt I could have done that on anyway. My afghans not quite that good.I made a lot of them over the years.

How great it is to "find" all of you.  I cannot believe that you have been 'here" all this time - sorry for missing.

My little project right now is to make fabric tissue holders that fit in a purse or pocket.  I have sewn 26 or so and my goal is more & more.  All to be donated for a church bazaar this fall.  It is very simple, the pattern I mean.

Keeping on here - both hubby and I have medical appointments and keeping up the house and visiting with everyone  fills most of our time.

Just need to clip the threads and iron this and it is on the way to the longarm. This is called a Log Cabin in the barn raising design.
Thank you Bubble for your help.

Amy - Such a beautiful quilt, with the many shades of green, offset with white.  I like the intriguing name - "Log Cabin, in the barn raising design".  Makes you take a closer look!

MaryAnn and Marilyne, thank you. I did have fun doing it.
Marilyne, there are many ways to put the log cabin together, Barn Raising is one of them.

Do you also make wheelchair size for elderlies? I used to make in crochet but yours are so much nicer.

Bubble, thank you. The group I am with does just cancer quilts. I think your wheelchair covers would also be lovely and much needed warmth on the legs.
I did make my bil a fidget quilt, lots of thing to play with and see when he had dementia.

A fidget quilt has many things sewn on it. For ladies it could have lace, zipper.ribbons.....thing of different textures for them to "feel" keep their fingers busy. On my bill's I put his name with beads, farm animals, Velcro .keys on a ring that could be removed for washing. I made his big enough to cover up in.
Here are some ideas for you to look at.

How interesting! I remember Making something similar with button to fasten, zipper to open, shoe string to pass through holes, poppers to push in or open, loop to put around a big button, all that in kindergarten for my daughter and others to learn those skills. Then it was called an activity cloth :)

I should follow your example: I also have one abandoned for about 6y, when Ben got sick...

Lovely, alpiner!  And a great way to use up some of the yarn stash. I made several of those, but haven't in a long time. I knit more now (with the one and almost-two new great-grandbabies), but occasionally crochet an afghan, using a "pattern" I got from one an aunt made many years ago.

Good morning all!

It has been a long time since I picked up any knitting or crocheting, and even longer for needle work.

I thought of you all when I ran across some old pattern booklets in Project Gutenberg. In fact, I actually have some of them.

This one I am not sure I have, but I do have some of the patterns listed: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/62482

These two I have: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/62487 I made the curler carrier, the boots, and fuzzy wuzzy. I still have the curler carrier although I don't do curlers anymore.

I am not sure I would call hairpin lace "exciting" I do like a few of these patterns including the lovely baby set. http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/62718

Anyone working on anything during this shutdown? I really need to get back to finishing a few projects. The cats, however, may have other ideas for my yarn.

I have a hairpin white blanket I started long ago  and abandoned, I don't know why.
Maybe I should try to finish  it? At the time I thought it was fun and growing fast.

I was always one that could sit for hours either Crochet, Reading. Polishing things. etc. for some reason right now just can't stick to one thing. Lasts about 15 min. and up on my feet walking around the house again. This scorching weather not helping. Maybe had this pandemic happened in Winter would be easier. Hope it doesnt last till then.

There all kinds of designs for quilts, aren't there?  I love this one, Amy.  Dramatic colors and what kid wouldn't like all the wild animals?  Where do you come up with your ideas?  And, I hope you are recording with photo and information everyone you make.

I miss doing handcrafts so much!  I was never a good quilter...not enough patience. I guess.  My mother made beautiful pieced quilts but always sent them out to be hand quilted by a local lady she knew or a church group who did the hand quilting for a source of income to the church.  I loved knitting and cross stitch and crocheting but don't do any of them now.  But, I still love looking at them (the ones I have left that Mother made and I made) and even using some of the things I have left.

Phyllis , the animals were cut from a panel and a dickens to get straight as they are rarely square. I had another pattern that I could use for a guide then used my measurements to put it together. I find quilting relaxing to do .

I crochet and cross stitch but since picking up quilting haven't done a lot of either.
The ones from your Mom are keepsakes and I am sure David will appreciate both yours and your Moms.
