Brrrr, it is finally feeling like winter. Supposed to go down to 29° tonight.  But it has been a sunny day.

We have 4 seasons here, although winter is mild in comparison to places we have lived in the past.  We don't have to worry about shoveling snow, but we do have to temporarily wrap our outdoor spigots, the pump we use for watering, and put our potted plants in the garage when we get what they call here a "hard freeze".  This only happens a few times during the winter.  We have had unusually warm until now.

Not much going on here.  Everything is quiet.  I trust everyone is having a good day.

Mary Ann, my casserole turned out pretty good and I did decide to use sharp cheddar.

It is colder today.  Tonight it is supposed to go to 32F. Brrrr

We got a late start again today.  Larry got our taxes finished.  I looked them over and thn we  signed them.  We took a ride over to the post office and mailed them.  Lots of traffic on the road today which was surprising.  Usually Sundays are pretty quiet around here.

I have the fixings for a chicken macaroni casserole so I need to get busy pretty soon.  I can't decide whether to use grated Parmesan or sharp cheddar in the casserole.  I'll probably take a taste of each cheese then decide.

Patricia, did you ever decide what to do with all that dried fruit?  You got some new cooking pans are you getting more enthused about getting some meals prepared for your freezer?

Mary Ann, how was Tom's chili?  I know you mentioned you didn't care for chili, but I hope you enjoyed a little bit.

Marilyne, I think we have very similar weather to yours in that area of Calif., but we don't get those cold winds like they do in San Francisco.  We have been there several times and I always felt chilled from the wind.  We were there in Feb. once and another time in Oct.  My youngest grandson was born in Santa Cruz.  They have pretty nice weather there.

Jenny, how is your father these days?  I hope he has gotten completely over the fall he had awhile back.

Marsgal, I hope your ice soon melts.  I don't envy you the icy walkways.  Be careful out there.  I remember when we lived in Illinois how bad it got.  The maintenance man forgot to salt the walks and I went sliding down on my back.  I was not hurt but embarrassed, but I was young then.  I wouldn't want to have that fall now.

Joy, I hope you continue to feel better.  Jackie, I think of you often.  My son has MS and I know life isn't easy for you.

MaryC, I bet your neighbor enjoyed that hot soup.  Callie, I always enjoy your posts.  Glad you were able see your granddaughter in the Christmas program.

Well, I better get busy.  Hope everyone has a good day.  I always read and enjoy hearing from everyone but not much of a conversationalist. 😊

Beverly, it got up to 70 today and it is 64 now at 10:30 central time.  We are to get some colder weather Sunday or Monday.

Larry and I went to Outback for a late afternoon lunch.  Larry got some shrimp and French fries and I got chicken three tacos and fries.  I could only eat one taco so finished the other two tonight.  They were full of very tasty chicken strips.

I was just like a rag doll today.   Just dragging myself around and doing almost nothing.  Now I'm sitting here yawning and thinking about going to bed.

Jackie, I hope you are doing OK.

Mary Ann, Larry has an older brother who lives in Tulsa.  They and their large family like the area.  I hope she finds a nice place to live and is happy there.  As my kids used to say that if things didn't work out they could always come home and she probably feels the same way.

I enjoy all your posts.  But I think I'd better go get ready for bed.

We had another warm day but some colder weather is coming in another couple of days.

I've looked at TV most of the day to watch all the oath taking, etc.  I only have a vague memory of the Clinton trial 21 years ago.  All the "pomp and circumstance" is interesting.  Another thing I find interesting are the State Dinners on c-span when all the guests are arriving, and a commentator or a historian describes the State Dinners of various presidents.  I enjoy history.

We lost power for about 15 minutes today and I was in a panic.  There is a lot of building going on in the area and we have lost power a couple of times lately.  The bedroom clocks reset themselves but we only have to reset the range and the microwave.  All the rest of the clocks have batteries.  Today the smoke detectors started beeping and I told Larry they must be electric because we've never had to change batteries since we moved here.  Sure enough after he got the step stool and looked it was electric.  However, I don't remember ever hearing them beep when we lost electricity in the past.  Oh, well, now we know----if we remember.

Joy, I'm glad you are feeling better and Marilyne, I hope you were able to get back home before the storm.

Patricia, that was a strange dream.  I've never had one like that.  Most of the time I don't even remember what I dreamed.

We're still having our warm weather--73F, but starting next week it looks like some winter temperatures are on the way, at least that is what the Weather Channel is reporting.

Mary Ann, I'm glad you didn't lose your hearing aid and that Tom helped you up.  Before Christmas I got down on the floor to arrange some things on the hearth and couldn't get up.  I needed something higher than the stone hearth so I crawled over to the sofa and managed to pull myself up.

A few years ago my son sent us a nifty little bench from Home Depot for working outside.  You could kneel on it and pull yourself up by the handles or you could turn it over and sit on it.  I'm thinking maybe I'll get one for the inside.  Larry uses it outside.  He can still get up but I notice it is getting harder for him also.

This warm weather has started me thinking about flowers and fertilizing my azaleas but it is too soon.  I know we are surely getting some colder weather soon.

Well, I have a few things I need to do so I better get busy.

Beverly, that is a pretty hibiscus.  When we have extreme cold we put any potted plants temporarily in the garage.  We have only had to do that once I think since we moved.  Ocala was in zone 9a and we are zone 8b, the same as Tallahassee.

Those cyclamen are lovely.  If I can find a plant I might try it on my back porch.  I have a nice low brick wall around it where I could put some plants.  It faces the East.

It is 70F degrees here and is supposed stay that way for a few more days.  Unusual weather.

Just got back from the grocery store a little while ago.  By the time I got everything put away and the meat in freezer bags, I feel exhausted.  I had one of those nights where I tossed and turned before I finally went to sleep after 3 am.

It was a little overcast but suddenly I see sun shining.  The air is warm and moist.  The Goldfinch is a regular visitor to the bird feeders as is the red bellied woodpecker.  He has a bright red head and a spot of red on his belly.  Sometimes the names of birds is confusing.  We have a lot of purple finches but their head is red and underside is a light rose color not purple at all.  Well, no one asked me to name the bird but if they did i wouldn't call it a "purple" finch.

As you can tell, I'm writing a lot of nonsense.  There isn't much going on and everything is nice and quiet.  I have a book that is more exciting than my life at present so I think I will go read it.😁.  But I'm not complaining as I like a quiet unexciting life.

Have a good day everyone!

Gigi took this photo a couple of days ago.  Tazz (left) is 13 years old.  Scruffy on the right is probably 9 years old.  He was a rescue dog so the Vet was guessing.  They've had him about 7 years.

Beverly, a lovely orchid.  I have had no luck with orchids but my Christmas Cactus blooms each year in December.  It stays on the porch in all weather and all I do is water occasionally.  It probably doesn't get the help it needs but I forget about it.You cannot see attachments on this board.

January 12, 2020, 01:49:20 pm
It is a beautiful day here in Northwest Florida.  A pleasant 70 degrees.  We aren't as warm here as Central Florida where Beverly lives.

We were late getting started this morning and didn't have breakfast until 10 am or so.  My Christmas cactus is a beauty again this year.  An occasional watering and it sits on the front porch regardless of weather.  I gave up having house plants as they always get gnats and I don't like that.

When we first moved here (four years ago come March), we were bothered with lots of flies.  My husband said it was because of the horse farm on the street behind us.  Since then they sold the horse farm and have built about six or seven nice houses.  And sure enough we seldom notice any flies.  However, I sure do miss the different types of horse shows that we saw in Ocala.  My son-in-law loves this area because it is a haven for fishermen.  We live across the Choctawhatchee Bay from Destin which used to be known as a fishing village.

Mary Ann, did Dot change her mind about driving to church?  Have been wondering if you and Dot had your usual cream pie today.

Marilyne, our neighbor had plumbing problems Friday.  Barbara started her clothes washing and water started leaking hot water badly.  The plumber came out yesterday and found a leak in the pipe coming up through the concrete which meant they had to knock out some concrete to fix the copper pipe.

We never use our garbage disposal except for crumbs.  We had our kitchen sink stopped up several times when we lived in Ocala.  I stopped using the garbage disposal and never had another problem.  Also the plumber told me to occasionally pour a cup of Clorox down the drains.  It helps keep them clear, at least I hope so as I have followed his advice.

Patricia, it sounds like you are having your regular winter weather?  We are not.  It is way too warm for January, but I'll take it.

Hope everyone will have a good day!

Rammel, the Naval School Explosive Ordnance is located on Elgin Air Force Base just a couple of miles from us.  It is managed by the Navy but staffed by Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps.  It has a separate entrance than the Elgin base.  Elgin AF owns a lot of land in this area.  Sometimes weeks go by and we don't hear the bombs but lately it has been more often.

Patricia and Rick,  ;D

Nothing much going on here.  It is 65F but a little overcast.

It is very quiet here in Northwest Florida, except for the short periods when the Navy Ordnance base is doing their bombing practices a few miles away.  Yesterday they were really loud but they only last about an hour.  This has been going on for several days.

Hope all is well with everyone today.

The War Trilogy sounds really good.  I like stories in that time period.

The Paris Architect is also a very good book.  It tells a story of a Frenchman concerned about himself when the Germans take over Paris and how he is drawn into helping a rich industrialist in helping the Jews.  It has a feel good ending.  Over a couple of years I have read it a couple of times.

Beverly, I hope today will be better for you.

Bubble, colds are miserable.  I've always heard that hot chicken soup helps at least temporarily. Hope you feel better soon.

Was cold this morning but it is getting warmer and the sun is shining.

Marilyne, how is the weather in your part of the country?

Not much to talk about today.  Just wishing the best for all.

Mary Ann, the Goldfinch was a bright yellow so I'm sure it was a male.  I'm not sure I've seen cherry stained that shade  I think I will look on google to see if I recognize it. We have a very nice tall curio cabinet we bought some years ago.  Our living room lamp tables and coffee table are dark mahogany and we thought the curio cabinet was also but when it was delivered it was stamped on the back cherry wood.  The only type of wood I easily recognize is oak because of the grain of the wood.

It was cold this morning but is warming up to 65 by afternoon.

Mary Ann, I really like dark cherry.  All of my daughter-in-law's wood furniture is dark cherry.

Sorry to hear Bubble is sick and hope she feels better soon.  Colds are miserable.

Larry looked out and the birds have busy eating all their food.  He went out to replenish the feeders and said it felt pretty good outside.  We saw our first Goldfinch a couple of days ago.  They leave in summer and come back in winter.  We should be seeing more of them soon.

Patricia, does the winter weather affect your arthritis?  What bothers me is rainy weather.  The dampness stirs up some pains I don't normally notice.

Beverly, I had enough mashed potatoes to make two bowls of soup so my husband had a bowl.  He said "I forgot how good this tasted".  I have in the past made potato soup from "scratch" with pieces of crisp bacon and carrots, but when it comes to cooking I make it as easy as possible.  I really don't like to cook.

I hope everyone is having a good day as it is possible according to your circumstances.  If you are like me, you occasionally would just like to skip a day or two until things are better.

Phyllis, thanks for that suggestion for the Harry Bosch books.  I'm sure Larry will like them and I'm going to write Michael Connolly's name down to remind myself.  He has a few more Jack Reacher books left to read.  He recently finished all the CJ Box series about the forest ranger.  He got most of those from the library so he could read them in order.

It was chilly this morning but finally reached 60 degrees by this afternoon.  Now it is getting cold again.☹️

I got my cookies made yesterday.  Made from a Betty Crocker mix but they taste pretty good to me.  I took a bagful to Gigi and Jeff when we went over to look at their new bedroom furniture.  I love her new furniture.  They are real happy with it.  We bought our bedroom furniture almost 50 years ago when maple furniture was popular, but we're still happy with it.  Although we moved several times, it still looks almost new.

I've been busy today making birthday and anniversary cards (on the computer)---just for our immediate family.  We have 4 birthdays and 2 anniversaries in Feb.

When Larry and I first got married, he used to love soup made from mashed potatoes.  I thought that sounded yucky.  Now I'm the one that takes the mashed potatoes and makes potato soup (which I am going to do in a few minutes with some left over from our roast chicken dinner).  His taste has changed over the years.

I hope everyone had a good day.  Loved reading all the posts.

Sue, your posts about the Jack Reacher books sounded like something my husband would enjoy. Our library has a program called "Libby" with digital books and I noticed they have a number of the Jack Reacher books by Lee Child.  I downloaded one for him and he really liked it.  Now he is on another one.  Glad you mentioned the books.

I was late yesterday and today I'm early.  The sun is shining on a chilly day.

I'm glad to hear you are feeling better, Joy.  So far I haven't had any problems with skin cancer, but Larry has had several cut out.  He used to see the dermatologist every six months but now it is every year.  When we lived in Ocala, we had a half acre and he started hiring a yard man.  Now we have just a small yard and our son-in-law does the yard during the growing season.
Nice to hear that Jack is doing well and that he and Mimi are still going to the park.  Yes, I miss his photos also.  I still hear from Sato several times a week.

It is a slow day.  I have a cookie mix from Betty Crocker (oatmeal chocolate chip) so I think I will go get busy.

Have a good day.  I enjoy all your posts.

I am late checking in today.  It seems I have been busier than usual today.

MaryC, so glad you found us.  We had sun this morning and the temp. Got up to 75F, but later in the afternoon we had some rain and it got a little chilly.

I baked a Perdue whole chicken today.  It is so good.  We'll have plenty of leftovers so I won't have to do any cooking for a couple of days.  I've been in more of a cooking mood lately.  We did have a turkey for Christmas but I sent most of it home with my daughter.  I felt so tired for a couple of days and we ate a couple of TV dinners.  My husband was really happy with that chicken dinner today.

Joy, I hope you are feeling better.  Beverly, it is good to see your post and I'm glad you are feeling better.

I hope 2020 will be a better year for all of us.  So much bad news on the TV I had to turn it off and read a book.
