    October 16, 2019, 10:04:54 pm
  • Oldiesmann: Heard from them this afternoon. The cost of repairs ended up being far more than they originally estimated and about $1200 more than what they say the car is worth (which is a little more than what I paid for it), so they're going to total it.

Shirley...our Joy lived in Baton Rouge and is not the Joy you're speaking of. sounds as if things are falling into place for you...and your girls.

Jeanne...the roads will be fine tomorrow for my trip to the doctors.  I've learned that when you live in a small town in a rural area, all speciality docs are a distance away.

It warmed up to the low 30s, so I got out to mail a letter, take food to the food pantry, and go to grocery store for a couple of items.

I'm tired tonight, so going to go get some sleep.

I hope our Sue is ok.  She hasn't posted since Saturday...but maybe she's still celebrating LSU's win over "Bama" ! :2funny:

It's AMAZING how much I can get done when I don't hurt and when I awake at 4:30 am.  :2funny:  :coolsmiley:

I'm working on the third load of laundry and I've gone through a food cabinet to cull out things I can donate to the church for those in need for Thanksgiving and just everyday needs.

I won't get it to the church today, but I'll drop it off tomorrow when I have to get out to go to the surgeon in Dbq for the physical part of my mammo exam.

Buddies...our Joy passed away Nov. 6.  Sharon's asking if I'd heard from her lately sent me looking and I found she just passed away...shy of her 91st birthday.  Here is her obituary and there's a guest book for a message. I left one that all of us at "Bosom Buddies" would miss our Joy.

Yikes, Mary!  It sounds as if you've been one sick lady.  I'm glad the hospital stay got things squared away and you're with Margaret.  I'm sure you and your girls will come up with the best solution for you.

Darlene...hope the cold doesn't appear.  They seem to hang on and on. now know you can't rely on your "church friends" to bring meals, so, I guess, you may want to stock up your freezer with your own meals for the next surgery, once you're back on your foot.  People don't have the time anymore, I guess.  You're lucky to find someone to walk your dog twice a day.  That's a huge gift. I'd think those you've taken meals to would reciprocate.

Sue..hurray for Joy's LSU Tigers!  What a game.

We have winter today.  It snowed all night and with wind, gives us a wind chill of 8.  It's still too dark to see how much snow, but glad my doc appt isn't until tomorrow.

Hi to Sharon,Shirley, Jeanne.

It's a nice day out there with temps in low 40s so a good day to "hit the shops" along with a gazillion other women.  The craft show was ok...and the shops were kind of disappointing. Only thing I bought was a yard flag with a snowman that was on sale.

With the cold coming in and possible snow, I took both cars to the station and filled them up so they're set for a bit.

Home now to settle in and watch some football.

Sunny, bright morning here and, as Jeanne said, it's to get polar blast cold beginning tomorrow for me.

Kathy and I are going to a craft show up at the Fairgrounds and then over to a town about 15 miles from here that's having "Christmas Open House" this weekend.  We'll go now while the weather is good.

I'm looking forward to watching Alabama and LSU football this afternoon. Not often you get #1 and #2 at this point in the season...and both undefeated.

Nothing else new around here.

No, and I took care of all the financial stuff all our married life...46 years. I simply can't imagine what the non-financial partner does when the one who does all that stuff goes first.  My dear husband would have been lost.  He became worried about money in the last weeks of his illness, when we were making weekly chemo visits, oxygen tanks were being delivered weekly, I bought a chair lift and walkers and a transport chair with our funds, and he worried we'd run out of money because of his illness.  We didn't...thanks to Medicare and our supplement.  Without those two, things would have been ...well...very, very tight.

The sad part is, that even with all the legal stuff in place...joint with survivorship, etc. some companies make it VERY difficult...MFS Fund...and others make it very easy...Vanguard.  I don't know how people get what's theirs without knowing the "ropes" and standing their ground.

Bank on the Square / Re: Money Matters

Investments seem to be doing ok.  Since my husband's death, I've decided to consolidate some scattered investments .... Edward Jones...who switched me to an "advisor" in Missouri when I wanted one here locally...but I guess my account wasn't big enough...and Muriel Jones...who suddenly assigned me an "adviser" with a name I can't pronounce...and who suddenly took an interest when they got the papers to make me the sole owner and to transfer the assets out.  So, I'm going with these investments with a local woman who is a CPA and a rep. for Voya.

Some of you might recall my "battle" with MFS Fund to get my money...and who wanted all sorts of $$ to "help" me get through their 22 pages of paperwork, to get a "Medallion signature," to get my original "stock certificate," etc.  The total they wanted was in the $200+ range.  My agent here got through all of that and I finally got my check.  Farewell, MFS Fund!
 :coolsmiley:  :idiot2:

My last fight has been with Social Security.  Woman who called me wanted our marriage certificate and Ray's DD214.  I explained he had no benefits from his Navy reserve service and I had a discharge paper and attached papers...nope...needed DD214. That was in Sept.  That was the earliest telephone interview time they had.  DD214 has been can take 90 days...but I stopped in the SS office 45 miles away last Friday...and gee...funniest thing...I showed another woman the marriage certificate, she made a copy, I said still don't have the DD214...and she said. "Oh, you don't need that..."she" can get that...and I showed her the discharge certificate I had...she made a copy...and said all was ok. AND, on Wed. the money I was due appeared in my checking account...the death benefit and money difference between his SS and mine for the last 3 months.   I was angry.  I didn't need the money to eat or pay my bills...but there are women who may need that...and some "bimbo" is throwing up unnecessary roadblocks.  AACCKKK.

Good early Fri morning!

Joints tell me weather change is coming.  It's suppose to get VERY cold...January like cold...this weekend and into next week.

Easy day today...haircut @ 9:15 and will stop by grocery store.  Going out tonight with Friday friends.

Marilyn...sounds like you're making good progress if you can drive and get out to class, etc.

Sharon...I hate sorting through clothes, but I need to do it big time, too.  Too many things in there I never wear anymore, but I hate to part with them.   ::)

It's a crisp 17 here now...was 10 when I got up.  We have snow on the grass, but roads and walks are all clear.  I'd rather have this than warmer and ice.  I also love my ugg boots...just slip them on and my toes are toasty warm.

Laundry going and I've been out to WalMart for drain stuff.  Bathroom sink upstairs is draining so slowly.  I guess I need to go put hot water in the drain now.  I hope that clears it up.

Geez, I started to post about 10:45 am and then looked at the clock and realized I was late for bridge.  We certainly can't have that!!  :2funny:  So, I had to close down without posting and hit the garage and get to our meeting place.  It was fun, but my cards weren't too good.  However, I had a partner in one game who made a grand slam...unfortunately we hadn't bid it.   ::)

Weather is to turn quite cold and snow tonight maybe.  Nothing big going on for me tomorrow...may wash out the refrig and see if I have any more items in the cupboards I can donate to the church for the Thanksgiving food drives.

November 05, 2019, 06:34:57 am

Good early Tuesday morning!  Time switch and old joints have me awake early.

Winter weather to return, so I'm glad I did the "city" run yesterday.  Everything else for with CPA to sign papers, play some bridge, get some groceries in, go to bank to put stuff back in safe deposit box, and get a haircut are ALL I have todo this week...and all right here in this little town.  :D

Hope your Tuesday is peaceful.

I did my drop off of about 10 bags of Ray's clothes at Good Will in Cedar Rapids and stopped in a couple stores to look for some heavier pants for winter.  Finally found one pair of black.  Everything seems to be black or gray this year.  I also stopped at Barnes and Noble for a calendar I like for my purse...covers Sept. 2019 through Dec. 2021.  So many of my appts are done a year in advance, so I like having a couple year calendar.

I went to another Memorial Service tonight...the second in two days...and I think about all I can take now.

I saw the first local house with outside Christmas lights on and a lighted tree in the house.

Jeanne....nope, never done them from scratch.  I always use Rhodes dinner rolls. Like I said "Lazy Lithuanian Bacon Buns."   :2funny:

We've got the rain now that I knew was coming. I've brought down a couple of the bags of Ray's clothes that the nephew and wife went through, so I'll load those up tomorrow and take them to Good Will in CR.

November 03, 2019, 03:23:44 pm

Sharon...bummer on the time goof up. The Good Lord knows you were there, though!

Marilyn...hope the looser bandage helped with the pain. really are warming up.  The Winter Texans will be glad for those temps., too, snow gone...until the next time.  I, too, moved some clothes around...with my closets getting most of Ray's things gone or ready for donation, I have some room to spread things out and put spring/summer things easier to get to and see.

It's warmer here today...40s ... but to rain and the joints have been shouting that since yesterday.

Church today was a memorial service for those in the church who passed away this past year.  They had candles on the altar with the name of the passed one and they were listed in the Bulletin and each name was read aloud during the service.  After the service we could go to the front and the parish nurse and others were there to give us our candle.  Tomorrow night is a Community Memorial Service at the Hospital and one of my bridge people whose husband passed away several weeks ago is going to pick me up and we'll go together.

I've been baking some Lithuanian "bacon buns" that I like to have in the freezer for a quick snack or supper.

This recipe makes the dough, etc.

None of Ray's Lithuanian relatives do that anymore...use Rhodes dinner rolls...thawed in a warm over for a couple of hours and then filled and baked.  I guess that makes "Lazy Lithuanian Bacon Buns."   :2funny:  That suits this Welshwoman just fine.   :smitten:

Medical Corner / Re: Bosom Buddies
November 02, 2019, 01:21:02 pm sounds as if you have Iowa temps.  You'll get warmer...but we won't. Bummer.

Sue...enjoy your walk

Sharon...good to have a clean car.  Mine was a mess after the snow and slush, so I got it washed in Dbq on Friday, but just the outside.  I slept in this morning, too. Guess the time in Dbq wore me out yesterday.

Marilyn...hope Doc calls you back with advice on the pain.

Alpiner...are you near the fires?  Do you want me to email you as I do the other Bosom Buddies I have email addresses for when the site goes down?  If so, please email me at

Darlene...hope all is fine in your part of Tx.

Jeanne...stay warm.  Winter has arrived, I guess.

Shirley...hope all is good in Wichita, too.  I know you really get snow and ice, come winter.

It's in low 30s and windy and overcast here.  I tried to walk this morning, but I'd forgotten a scarf...had my parka, hat and gloves, but got cold, so didn't last long on the walk.

Back to laundry.

Hope Marilyn's surgery went well.  I forget...did they do both feet?

Mary...good idea to stay home if you're hurting.

Sharon...hope you can get your back thing fixed so you get relief.

Sue...careful walking in the rain...though your temps are probably high enough you don't have to worry about ice.

Jeanne...yup...we "Northerners" have found winter already.

Alpiner..hope you're safe from the fires...and the smoke.

It's a WHITE Halloween here.  The little ghosties will blend right into the white stuff.   :2funny:   It's snowing as I write this and there are already several inches on the ground.  I'm glad I bought my new snow boots when I did. They got their first workout this morning taking recyclables and garbage to the curb.  I love them.

My surgeon's office called at 7:30 to change my appt to see him from this morning to Nov. 12.  He was called in for emergency surgery this morning.  It's just the physical part of the mammo so no big deal.  There was no call back, so all good there.

I'm kind of glad I don't have to drive to Dbq on this second snow of the year.  Always people who forget how to drive on it and go way too fast for the conditions.

I do have an appt at 2:30 with gal who's gotten some accounts all centralized for me.  That's right here in town, though, and I need to drop off new POA for Health Care at the hospital and Clinic.

Happy End of October!

I'm home to cold Iowa where there was 2+ inches of snow this morning ...mostly melted by tonight but more coming tomorrow night.  Plane was delayed...were out from gate when we had to go back for a "maintenance issue."  :P  Scary stuff, but got home ok.

Great visit, but good to be home, too.

Alpiner - are you close to all the fires there in CA?

Sharon- it sounds as if you're getting stronger everyday.

Mary- you also sound as if you've making good progress.

Sue...any relief from the heat?

Darlene...your family visit sounded wonderful.

Jeanne...looks like snow headed our way.

I'm still here in N. Wisc ...cold and crisp, but no snow...yet.

I'm flying home tomorrow.  It's been a good visit, and I am ready to get home now.

Sue and Sharon...hope Sue's bridge was as good as Sharon's.  I missed playing today, but had to do the mammo. good to see your postings again!!

Back from the Big Squeeze...and hope there's no recall.  I HATE those.  They always scare me badly.

It's gotten cloudy again and I'm getting my suitcase packed.  I won't be in Mpls...Patricia will meet me and take me to their Northern WI home.

Nothing else new here.

October 23, 2019, 11:02:11 am

Morning, Buddies.  32 here this morning and to get into the 40s.  Some dark clouds, so may have some rain.  Clinic changed time on my mammo to 12:15 in Dbq, so no bridge today.

Tomorrow I'm flying to Mpls for a long weekend with same family here last weekend.  It just worked out that last weekend was when they could come here.  This weekend up there had been planned for a bit.  It'll be nice to see their place again and they're making cider this weekend.  I will come home Tues.

Their internet can be spotty, so I may or may not be able to get online.

Cold, wet, windy and dreary Monday here.   Great day to do laundry, sit in the Fam room with the fireplace on and read.  Perfect wet, windy, cold Monday.

And that's my news! :D
