Callie  -  I also like, "The Crown",  better in this folder where it belongs! :)  Since there had been no posts or responses  here since October 7, I didn't want to take a chance, but I think it will work out better here.   I may move my last "Crown" comment over here as well.

CallieOK

Marlene, I noticed how long it had been since a post here.  That's why I mentioned it over in the Library. 😐

Vanilla-Jackie

Seems i missed a great tv programme ( The Crown, ) think UK have had three seasons and i had not seen one of them...
" There is no present like the time "

Marilyne

Callie, Tome and Jackie - I'm still savoring episode #5 of The Crown, and haven't yet moved forward with the rest.  Tonight we'll probably watch #6.  I'm going to string them out as long as I can stand to wait, because I know it will be another year before Season 4, will be shown.  That's the thing I dislike about series shows on TV.  Usually a year, and sometimes longer, between seasons.

I see that Mrs. Maisel, is back for Season #3.  I'll also put off watching that one for a while, as it will be such a long time before the next season appears.  Another one that we have watched for YEARS, (lost track of how many years) is Ray Donovan. It started with his two children in the show being about 12 and 14, and now they are grown up adults, and the girl is married and boy is in the Army.  Anyway, that one is back, and we're watching it yet again, knowing it will leave us hanging for another year. ::)

RAMMEL

Anyone watch the tree lighting from Rockefeller Center? What did/do you think? I was a bit disappointed. Too Jivey(sp) and not enough traditional.

Rick - We happened to see a promo for it, and both of us agreed that it didn't look like a show we would like, so didn't watch it.    Then we started talking about the wonderful Christmas shows from years past, like the Andy Williams Christmas Special.  We always looked forward to that one, and so many others.  I remember the Bob Hope Christmas Show  He  always had great musical guests, and usually did his show from a Military base somewhere.  Also Sonny and Cher, did a Christmas Show, as did Carol Burnett, and Dean Martin.  Those were the days on Television. Entertaining shows like that, with lots of good music, will never return again.  :(

RAMMEL

:(    Seems like all the good ones are gone   :(
Even the Christmas Eve and Day shows seem to be going away.

Certainly true that the Holiday variety shows we remember are gone. Not surprising that they're now more relevant to whatever Generation label fits the younger bunch.

For those of you who watch "The Amazing Mrs. Maisel":    The new season is now showing on Amazon Prime (which I don't have).  In Episode 3 (Minute 22 according to the "expert" whose name follows  :) ), watch for the redhead in a pink dress on the right side of the fans cheering Mrs. M. as she walks into a Vegas casino.
That's my granddaughter, Miss Ellen.  :smitten:
It's the second season she's been an Extra on the show - but the first time you can see her more than as a figure in the dark background.

I'm ready to watch the last episode in "The Crown".  Will be sorry to see the season end. Wonder if there'll be another season?

Marilyne

Callie - There is supposed to be one more season, with the same actors who are now playing The Royal Family.  Those episodes will probably include the Princess Diana story, as well as Prince Charles and Camilla, and maybe something about Princess Margaret's death?   After that, I don't know if they will continue on, up to the way life has turned out now, for the family?  They would have to have older actors, or maybe could use aging makeup on the ones from this season?

I probably won't get to Mrs. Maisel, for a while yet? When I do, you can be sure I will be looking for a redhead in a pink dress!

For those of you who love the TV show Downtown Abbey, a look at the real Earl and Countess, Castle, and grounds where the show is filmed.

"You likely don't know Lady Fiona Carnarvon, eighth Countess of Carnarvon. But you probably know a little bit about her life and her home of Highclere Castle thanks to a not-so-little show called Downton Abbey. Or at least you think you do.

Although Lady Carnarvon and her husband Geroge Herbert, the Eighth Earl of Carnarvon, are the real-life counterparts of Downton Abbey's Lord Robert and Lady Cora Grantham, she says that they're "truly not very similar at all."'

Sasha, I cut the cord a few months back and depend on over the air antenna for local stations but also subscribe to Netflix, Amazon Prime, Starz, (I am an Outlander fan) and Britbox, for now.  It is fine for the present and I'm very happy with the reduced Spectrum bill.

I watched an interesting movie the other night.  It is long but well done with a great director, Martin Scorsese, and a terrific cast, Pacina, DeNiro, Pesci, and many more.  The Irishman.  It is about Jimmy Hoffa, the Mob, unions, the whole period back in the mid-20th C. and is nominated for Best TV Movie of 2019.  Certainly not a feel-good movie but very interesting.

Phyllis - Good to see you here!  I enjoy reading your messages, because it seems that you and I usually like the same movies and TV series!  We are in sync once again,  with The Irishman!   I thought it was an incredible movie . . . too long to watch in one sitting for us, so we watched half on one night, and finished it on the next. Not a moment wasted in that movie, so I can see where they couldn't make it any shorter.

I agree with most critics, that it's deserving of all the Golden Globe Awards that it's been nominated for.  Kudos to all the stars who brought this unique American story to life.  Whether it's true or not, as to what actually happened  to Jimmy Hoffa, we will never know for sure?  The acting is perfection, as far as  I'm concerned.  You can't help admiring the three old men . ..  DeNiro, 76,  Pesci, 76, and Pacino, 79.  They were remarkable and convincing in their roles.  DeNiro and Pesci were made up to look younger in the early years, which didn't work too well, but I didn't care.

I hope that some of you will give it a chance and watch it. It is perfection, as far as the directing, (Scorsese), acting, background music, and supporting actors are concerned.

Marilyne

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas, with family or friends, and that you enjoyed many of the Holiday programs that are shown on TV every year. AJ and I watched our favorite old movies, like It's a Wonderful Life, White Christmas, and Remember the Night.  Besides movies, there was a beautiful London Ballet performance of, The Nutcracker, on Christmas Eve, that we had playing in the background.  Of course, many different versions of The Yule Log, were shown on various channels, and will continue through New Years Eve.  Usually my grown up kids, love to watch their old favorites from childhood . . . A Charlie Brown Christmas, Mr.Magoo's Christmas Carol, and Rudolph, but we had more company this year on both Christmas Eve and Day, so never had time for those. A few days before Christmas, I sat down and watched O Henry's, The Gift of the Magi.  It's from 1952, and stars Jeanne Crain and Farley Granger. I just love that oldie, because I can remember reading the story when I was a young teen, and really getting the message!  A message of love, that never grows old.

Just got through reading The story of Arthur Trueluv. Loved it. Not read any of her books for awhile. Will get more. I am getting away from computers for awhile. Back to other things. Seems like telephones have taken over people's lives along with such as Facebook etc.
The robot calls stating already. Had 2 this morning.

My New Year's Eve is set. "Live From Lincoln Center" on PBS is showing the NY Philharmonic playing music by Stephen Sodheim (one of my favorites), followed by a stage adaptation of "Holiday Inn".
At the same time, TCM is showing reruns of "That's Entertainment" parts 1 and 2.

Can't believe I actually have a choice.

:bestwishes: to EachFriend for A Happy New Year.    :bubbly:

Marilyne

JeanneP - I'm glad you enjoyed Arthur Truluv.  Lots of us read it here, and liked the story.  Elizabeth Berg, wrote a couple of follow ups, which were good, but not as good as the original.

Callie - Thanks for the tip, on the PBS,  Live from Lincoln Center, tonight.  AJ, will be watching a Sharks Hockey game early in the evening, so if it goes into overtime, I'll watch the PBS show  on the bedroom TV. Also I keep meaning to tell you that I haven't yet seen Episode #3, of Mrs. Maisel, so haven't had the pleasure of watching Miss Ellen, in her scene outside of the Las Vegas casino.  Maybe tonight, I'll watch it after Lincoln Center is over.   :)

Sasha

Happy New Year to those who partake.

I just lined up Mrs Maisel (which, the show, and whom, the character, I enjoy to the hilt) to 3:3:22 and discovered that Miss Ellie, wearing 60s lipstick, was almost on her knees!

Ok, favorite moment, whole series so far: Susie's entrance into B. Altman's. Second favorite: in the car on her way home, Rose sees a bison.

Yes, I am just starting on the Followup of Arthur Trulove. I don't think I am going to enjoy it as much. Will see. I find that with a lot of writers, specially new ones now. First book great next they write to fast I think. Not good

Sasha - I really enjoyed the Las Vegas scenes on Mrs.M.  Everything was so well done, with little snippets of real past entertainers either in the background (Louis Prima & Keeley Smith), or in the forefront - the  Shy Baldwin character doing a perfect imitation of Johnny Mathis, in personality and voice.  I'm wondering if generations younger than ours, even know who Johnny Mathis is/was?  Lots of the beauty of the show for me, is featuring actors playing show biz icons from the 1960's.

Tomereader1

Wow, I love Johnny Mathis.

Count me in as a big fan of Johnny Mathis!

Sue
P.S.  I loved Nat King Cole, too.  He grew up in Montgomery, Alabama, near where I now live.  He had the smoothest voice (IMHO) of most of the singers of ballads at the time.

Johnny Mathis and Nat King Cole were always at the top of the "Swoon List"!

Sasha, did you really catch the moment when a redhead in a pink dress appeared on the right hand side of the crowd as Mrs. Maisel walked between her fans?  Awesome!    I caught a better glimpse of one of Ellen's friends who was also an extra.

I came home from the Wisconsin trip with an eye infection. So my t.v. watching has been mostly "listening".  I'm looking forward to some of  my favorite "dramas" beginning their January schedules

Marilyne

Callie - There was another redhead, who was shorter, and was seen immediately before Miss E. (Also in a pink dress).  Then came Miss Ellen!  A good shot of her, and when she turned her head to watch Mrs.Maisel go into the casino, I got a good look at the back of her head.  Her red hair was styled in a '60's "do".

I was also a big fan of Johnny Mathis.  One of my best friends in college, had graduated in the same class with him, from a high school in San Francisco. So she knew him, and always said what a nice guy he was. He had a long run of many years in Las Vegas. I think he's still living, and would be in his 80's now.

Tomereader1

For smooth voices, anyone remember John Gary.  Sighhh!

CallieOK

I've only seen a  clip of the Mrs M scene that dil sent to my phone and it's a bit blurred.  Just watched it again and noticed the other girl in pink.
I do have a selfie that Ellen took of her and her friends who were also extras. She sometimes styles her hair that way " just because".

Tone, don't remember John Gary. Sighed over The 4 Aces and liked The Mills Brothers close harmony.

Male vocalists all had such clear beautiful voices, back in the 40's, 50's and a few lingered on into the 60's.  You could understand every word, and such lovely music and lyrics.
Tome - I remember John Gary! He had a similar voice to Jerry Vale, and Al Martino, so I sometimes got them mixed up.  I liked Johnny Mathis, Andy Williams, and Steve Lawrence. Steve and his wife, Eydie Gorme, did some great duets.   They were married around he same time as AJ and I, and recorded an album that we had, and played hundreds of times. I think it was called "Steve and Eydie", but not sure?  Another album that we played a lot, was Frank Sinatra's "Songs for Swingin' Lovers".

FlaJean

When Apple started selling individual song on iTunes, I got many of those oldies.  I have them on my iPad, phone and computer.

JeanneP

I remember seeing Johnny Mathis in my home town in U.k. In late 40s early 50 .we use  get lots of stars I this one theatre. Have lots of his records. He must be in his 80s. Now. Think he still does shows.
JeanneP

Tomereader1

Oh, Marilyne.  I loved Steve & Edyie.  Both were great singers. Andy Williams too.

Sasha

Oh, yes, Songs for Swingin' Lovers. Oddly enough, the Living Room uses I Thought Aboit You from that album as her alarm clock sound when it's time to call her mother. Twice a day.
