Chris Wallace: the first family and other Trump surrogates "waved away" on scene health officials offering masks during the debate https://t.co/PUDh8yT7kA pic.twitter.com/iQTJdSMsoM

"Following the news that President Trump tested positive for the coronavirus, Fox's Chris Wallace seems determined to push aside some of the pro-Trump agenda of his on-air colleagues and focus on truth-telling instead.

On Friday morning, Wallace told the Trump propaganda-spewing panelists on Fox and Friends about how, during this week's debate that he moderated, the first family and other Trump surrogates entered the debate hall wearing masks but then removed after they were seated.

Wallace said that his own family, as well as Joe Biden's family and campaign staff, wore masks throughout, but the first family and other Trump surrogates "waved away" on scene health officials offering masks — an obvious nudge to get them to adhere to the rules set forth by the Cleveland Clinic requiring attendees wear a mask."

We had 36 new cases today and this week 14 pediatric cases went to ER with several admitted to the hospital.

An anonymous "person close to the Pres." told the pool reporter that the Pres. was worse than what the doctor reported in the press gathering.  According to the anonymous source, he had to be given oxygen Friday.

The debate commission says at the next debate that anyone refusing to wear a mask will be escorted out of the debate area.  Who knows what is going to happen in the few days left before the election.  I'll vote early with my mask and gloves on!

This has been a bad year.  Sure hope things get better soon.

... this C-virus seems to be bringing out the best in some people and the worst in some people, also turning some people into crazies...We have seen the tv footages of people going berserk inside shops - stores, mainly when somebody tells them to wear a face covering....
The longer this goes on, the more crazies we will hear about, the nasty's and the good deeders and so forth...This is causing many to be acting out of character..

We had 25 new covid cases today.

My Canadian son-in-law flew to Los Angeles for his dad's funeral.  Since coming back he has had some symptoms and now he is waiting for test results.  I'm sure he wore a mask but planes don't have a great ventilation system.

My son and daughter-in-law have flown to Calif about 5 times in the last few months because of my grandson dying of cancer.  They always fly Alaska Air direct because of the good ventilation system.  They've been fortunate so far.

Rammel, good to see you posting.  I hadn't seen a post from you in a while.

A dear friend whose husband works outdoors fulltime for the County Conservation Dept. developed a cough and 103.5 fever Sunday. He tested positive so they're both quarantined for 14 days.  She's been tested, too, but no results yet.  They're in their late 50s.

Stay safe and healthy,

Stay positive

FlaJean

My Canadian son-in-law tested negative.  I think he might have been super sensitive about his sniffles after his trip to southern CA for his dad's funeral.  Covid-19 is especially bad in LA it seems.

patricia19

Monday, locally, we had 55 new cases. On Tuesday and Wednesday, we had 40 new cases, and on Thursday 21. As people are inside more in winter, this is going to be bad. And they say we are still in the first surge while some Western states are already in their second. Alaska has 9,005 resident cases as of yesterday and 991 nonresident cases. The majority are 29 and under.

Finally something on a positive note about COVID.
Encouraging update!
A professor of pharmacy at U of Toronto sent this clearly worded update to his family.

For this pandemic, there's a greater chance of survival for those getting infected 3 months later like June 2020  than those who got infected 3 months earlier say February 2020. The reason for this is
that Doctors and scientists know more about Covid-19 now than 3 months ago and hence are able to treat patients better. I will list *5 important things* that we know now that we didn't know in February
2020 for your understanding.

1. COVID-19 was initially thought to cause deaths due to *pneumonia- a lung infection*- and so Ventilators were thought to be the best way to treat sick patients who couldn't breathe. *Now we are realizing that the virus causes blood clots in the blood vessels of the lungs* and other parts of the body and this causes reduced oxygenation. Now we know that just providing oxygen by ventilators will not help but we have to prevent and dissolve the micro clots in the lungs. This is why we are using drugs like *Aspirin and Heparin ( blood thinners that prevents clotting) as protocol in treatment regimens in June 2020. *

2. Previously patients used to drop dead on the road or even before reaching a hospital due to reduced oxygen in their blood- OXYGEN SATURATION. This was because of *HAPPY HYPOXIA*- where even though the oxygen saturation was gradually reducing the COVID-19 patients did not
have symptoms until it became critically less, like sometimes even 70%. **Normally we become breathless if oxygen saturation reduces below 90%. **This breathlessness is not triggered in COVID patients and so we were getting the sick patients very late to the hospitals in February 2020. Now since knowing about happy hypoxia we are monitoring oxygen saturation of all COVID patients *with a simple home use pulse oximeter and getting them to the hospital if their oxygen saturation drops
to 93% or less*. This gives more time for doctors to correct the oxygen deficiency in the blood and a better survival chance in June 2020.

3. We did not have drugs to fight the coronavirus in February 2020. We were only treating the complications caused by it... hypoxia. Hence most patients became severely infected.
```**Now we have 2 important medicines FAVIPIRAVIR & REMDESIVIR**```
These are ANTIVIRALS that can kill the coronavirus. By using these two medicines we can prevent patients from becoming severely infected and therefore cure them BEFORE THEY GO TO HYPOXIA. This knowledge we have in JUNE 2020... not in February 2020.
4. Many Covid-19 patients die not just because of the virus but also due the patient's own immune system responding In an exaggerated manner called *CYTOKINE STORM*. This stormy strong immune response not only kills the virus but also kills the patients. In February 2020 we didn't know how to prevent it from happening. Now in June 2020, we know that *easily available medicines
called Steroids,* that doctors around the world have been using for almost 80 years *can be used to
prevent the cytokine storm in some patients*.
5. Now we also know that people with hypoxia became better just by making them lie down on their belly- known as prone position. Apart from this a few days ago Israeli scientists have discovered that a a chemical known as Alpha Defensin produced by the patients White blood cells can cause the micro clots in blood vessels of the lungs and this could possibly be prevented by a drug called Colchicine used over many decades in the treatment of Gout.
So now we know for sure that patients have a better chance at surviving the COVID-19 infection in June 2020 than in February 2020, for sure.
Going forward there's nothing to panic about Covid-19 if we remember that a person who gets infected later has a better chance at survival than one who got infected early.
Let's continue to follow precautions, wear masks and practice social distancing  Please distribute this message, as we all need some positive news...
From CNN this morning, "Some European countries are reporting record high Covid-19 cases, prompting leaders to choose between two drastic solutions. Limiting local restrictions would help keep economies open, but may not stop another wave of the virus. A short national lockdown may be safer, according to health experts, but could shock economies once again. The UK's Boris Johnson is one of the leaders trying to avoid the latter. In the US, the Trump Administration has indicated they are open to natural herd immunity as a way to best coronavirus -- an option that experts say could be disastrous. Under most estimates, that would mean about 70% of the population would have to catch the disease."
The US tops 8 million cases
"U.S. passes 8 million COVID-19 cases
By: CBS News Posted at 12:51 PM, Oct 16, 2020 and last updated 10:52 AM, Oct 16, 2020
The United States has now seen more than 8 million COVID-19 cases, according to a tally from Johns Hopkins University. Over 218,000 people nationwide have died due to the virus.
The country is now battling a fall surge, with 17 states seeing surges unlike anything they've experienced before in this pandemic, CBS News correspondent Mola Lenghi reported.
More than 63,000 cases were reported alone on Thursday, rising closer to daily case numbers not seen since the summer.
Hotspots are flaring across the Midwest, with smaller, rural hospitals fighting to hold on.
"It's not a joke when we say we swim in COVID," said Dr. Scott Samlan, an emergency room doctor in Hammond, Indiana, a state that hit a record number for cases on Thursday.
"I think the scary part for a lot of us is that we don't know how any individual is going to handle COVID," he said.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's leading infectious disease expert, told "CBS Evening News" anchor and managing editor Norah O'Donnell this week that the country needs to redouble its efforts to contain the virus as we enter the fall and winter months.
"What we really have to do is double down" on preventive measures like social distancing and wearing masks, Fauci said Wednesday.
He stressed that the same protocols health officials have been advising for months — wash your hands frequently, social distance, wear a mask, and avoid crowds, especially indoors — are as essential as ever, seven months into the pandemic.
"They sound very simple, but people are not doing that and that's why we have an uptick in cases," he said.
Anne Yurek, of Lancaster, Wisconsin, said people just don't take the virus seriously. "My uncle, my brother, my sister and then my dad died," said Yurek. "I couldn't even go to my dad's funeral. We don't get to say goodbye."
Compared to other states' case rates, Alaska's average case rate per capita over the last 7 days (25.5 average daily cases over the last week per 100,000) remains at the thirteenth-highest of US states, just below Wyoming (27.3) and worse off than Missouri (24.4). If Anchorage were its own state, its 7-day case rate (34) would put it at rank #6, between Utah and Idaho, and if Fairbanks were a state, its 7-day rate of 40.7 would make it #5 in the nation, just behind Wisconsin.
We in Az had about 300 new cases a day 2 weeks ago. Now we are over 1000 a day. People are not good about wearing masks and then we have had the Trump family in for many unmasked rallies!
Bioterrorism at work, sadly.
jane
DigGirl...you're sadly right.
And, I've joined the Quarantined Group...I was exposed to the virus...and so staying in and checking my temps, etc. for next 14 days.  I talked to a nurse when I called to cancel my annual mammo and doc visit (which was today and next week respectively, and so that's off until end of January!)  She told me to just drink lots of liquids, rest, and take tylenol if I'm achy...but with arthritis like I have in every joint, that's a given!
Netflix and Hallmark channels are a godsend to me.  Sure nothing on regular channels that appeals to me.  I'm not into all that "contest" stuff or whatever that is.
Take care and stay safe and healthy,
"White House advisers have made the case recently for a "natural" approach to herd immunity as a way to reduce the need for public health measures to control the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic while still keeping people safe. This idea is summed up in something called the Great Barrington Declaration, a proposal put out by the American Institute for Economic Research, a libertarian think tank.
The basic idea behind this proposal is to let low-risk people in the U.S. socialize and naturally become infected with the coronavirus, while vulnerable people would maintain social distancing and continue to shelter in place. Proponents of this strategy claim so-called "natural herd immunity" will emerge and minimize harm from SARS-CoV-2 while protecting the economy.
Another way to get to herd immunity is through mass vaccinations, as we have done with measles, smallpox and largely with polio.
A population has achieved herd immunity when a large enough percentage of individuals become immune to a disease. When this happens, infected people are no longer able to transmit the disease, and the epidemic will burn out.
As a professor of behavioral and community health sciences, I am acutely aware that mental, social and economic health are important for a person to thrive, and that public health measures such as social distancing have imposed severe restrictions on daily life. But based on all the research and science available, the leadership at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health and I believe this infection-based approach would almost certainly fail.
Dropping social distancing and mask wearing, reopening restaurants and allowing large gatherings will result in overwhelmed hospital systems and skyrocketing mortality. Furthermore, according to recent research, this reckless approach is unlikely to even produce the herd immunity that's the whole point of such a plan.
Vaccination, in comparison, offers a much safer and likely more effective approach.
An uncertain path to herd immunity
Herd immunity is an effective way to limit a deadly epidemic, but it requires a huge number of people to be immune.
The proportion of the population required for herd immunity depends on how infectious a virus is. This is measured by the basic reproduction number, R0, how many people a single contagious person would infect in a susceptible population. For SARS-CoV-2, R0 is between 2 and 3.2. At that level of infectiousness, between 50% and 67% of the population would need to develop immunity through exposure or vaccination to contain the pandemic.
The Great Barrington Declaration suggests the U.S. should aim for this immune threshold through infection rather than vaccination.
To get to 60% immunity in the U.S., about 198 million individuals would need to be infected, survive and develop resistance to the coronavirus. The demand on hospital care from infections would be overwhelming. And according to the WHO estimated infection fatality rate of 0.5%, that would mean nearly a million deaths if the country were to open up fully.
The Great Barrington Declaration hinges on the idea that you can effectively keep healthy, infected people away from those who are at higher risk. According to this plan, if only healthy people are exposed to the virus, then the U.S. could get to herd immunity and avoid mass deaths. This may sound reasonable, but in the real world with this particular virus, such a plan is simply not possible and ignores the risks to vulnerable people, young and old.
You can't fully isolate high-risk populations
The Great Barrington Declaration calls for "allowing those who are at minimal risk of death to live their lives normally ... while protecting those who are at highest risk." Yet healthy people can get sick, and asymptomatic transmission, inadequate testing and difficulty isolating vulnerable people pose severe challenges to a neat separation based on risk.
First, the plan wrongly assumes that all healthy people can survive a coronavirus infection. Though at-risk groups do worse, young healthy people are also dying and facing long-term issues from the illness.
Second, not all high-risk people can self-isolate. In some areas, as much as 22% of the population have two or more chronic conditions that put them at higher risk for severe COVID-19. They might live with someone in the low-risk group and they still must shop, work and do the other activities necessary for life. High-risk individuals will come in contact with the low-risk group.
So can you simply guarantee that the low-risk people who interact with the high-risk group are uninfected? People who are infected but not showing symptoms may account for more than 30% of transmission. This asymptomatic spread is hard to detect.
Asymptomatic spread is compounded by shortcomings in the quality of testing. Currently available tests are fairly good, but do not reliably detect the coronavirus during the early phase of infection when viral concentrations can be low.
Accordingly, identifying infection in the low-risk population would be difficult. These people could go on to infect high-risk populations because it is impossible to prevent contact between them."
Steven Albert
Professor and Chair of Behavioral and Community Health, University of Pittsburgh
In our county we had 100 new cases today.  This is the most reported in one day. We are now over 5500 cases in our county.  The only place we go nowadays is the grocery store and they require masks, thankfully.
It has been my understanding that the epidemiologists don't know if you can become immune to this virus??  In the event that there is no immunity, the herd theory wouldn't work anyway.  Haven't there been a few people who have gotten covid twice?
Dr Fauci said today that everything should be normal by the end of 2021.  I didn't hear his reasoning, however.
patricia19
There have been several reinfections because the immunity doesn't last very long as the disease continues to mutate faster. And each mutation brings more and more surprises, such as the notable one causing a rare but serious complication triggered by the infection that has features of Kawasaki disease. And it is now spreading to adults.
https://www.webmd.com/lung/news/20200514/covid19-may-trigger-rare-complication-in-children
https://www.wxyz.com/news/national/coronavirus/severe-covid-19-complication-seen-in-children-now-reported-in-adults-cdc-says
This is why a vaccine is the best way to go and Dr, Fauci, believes we may have one early next year altho it will take most of 2021 to fully vaccinate IF you can find those who won't wear masks or vaccinate due to odd beliefs.
Why Covid-19 Coronavirus Won't Just 'Go Away,' As Eric Trump Said, What Does Endemic Mean
"During an interview with Fox News host Jeanine Pirro on "Justice with Judge Jeanine," Eric Trump, the son of President Donald Trump said, "And guess what, after November 3 coronavirus will magically all of a sudden go away and disappear and everybody will be able to reopen."
