A gorgeous voice and a very sad life.  She was at the peak of her popularity  when she recorded this hit song, and was in the movie by the same name.

Been on a bit of a Roger Miller kick lately, particularly exploring some of his more serious songs. He had hits with silly stuff like "Chug-a-Lug" and "Dang Me" but was a great songwriter and could do serious stuff just as well. Here's a lesser known one from 1971. This was the flip side of "Loving Her Was Easier". Apparently this got the attention of some people in Europe as there are adaptations in German and Swedish - the German from 1971 and Swedish from 84.

Roger Miller's version of a Buck Owens song. Buck Owens originally recorded this in 1961. Roger Miller's version was recorded in 1965 and used as the flip side of "I Ain't Never".

They, all four, are really classically trained, and It's that training that allows them to let them comedy shine.

I had seen them years ago, forgotten them, and I had to check, and they are still working today.

Heard that guitarist George Kooymans of Dutch rock band Golden Earring has passed away. This was the second of their two big American hits, peaking at #10 in 1982. Their other big one was "Radar Love", which hit #13 in 1973. As with many European bands, they had far more success overseas than they did here, but both "Radar Love" and "Twilight Zone" are staples of classic rock radio stations still.

Never heard of them, but have heard or heard of Radar Love.

Ohhhhh! I remember him. Here is the composition he wrote for the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, NY.

His composition for the 1976 Summer Olympics.

Neither one of them, IMO, is memorable.

RIP Tom Lehrer. Talented singer-songwriter, satirist and later math/music history teacher.

My favorite Tom Lehrer song ---

My favorite Tom Lehrer song is, "The Vatican Rag", which was on his 1965 album, That Was the Year That Was.  Catholics, Protestants, Jews and atheists all laughed  got a kick out of these lyrics.   Nobody got offended  back then as they do now.   No such thing as PC in 1965. . . .

From 1971. Just in case you needed further proof of what a talented guitarist Glen Campbell was. This was I guess his answer to "Classical Gas", written by his piano player Dennis McCarthy. This was the flip side of the single "The Last Time I Saw Her".

Never realized this was a Hoagy Carmichael song. I usually like to hear it done by Leon Redbone. Either way, it's so easy listening to it.

Leon Redbone did a great job on that song.

Here's a good one by John Prine, about the former town of Paradise, Kentucky. The town met its demise when the Tennessee Valley Authority built a coal-fired power plant in the area. The resulting ash caused a lot of problems, at which point the TVA bought out the town, razed most of its buildings and expanded the power plant. The only thing that remains of the town today is a small cemetery.

The original version of "The Highwayman", from 1977. 8 years later, a country music supergroup consisting of Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson had a big hit with this song.

Certainly someone other than Oldiesmann, Marilyne, or me, has a favorite or two. Let's hear them. I'm getting tired of hearing my favorite stuff. - - - - - Not really, but would like to hear other stuff.

I couldn't understand the lyrics by Jimmy Webb, so went to YouTube and found the one by Kris, Nelson, Jennings and Cash.

A great song by an 80s supergroup, featuring lead vocals by Roy Orbison. The Traveling Wilburys was comprised of Jeff Lynne (of Electric Light Orchestra fame), George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Roy Orbison. This is one of the things that helped revive Roy's career in the 80s. This was released on the group's first album in October 1988. The group went on to record two more albums, though Roy Orbison died less than two months after the first album was released.

A great song from the New Christy Minstrels from 1964. Like much of the group's repertoire, this was written by their leader Randy Sparks.

In 1973, Italian singer/actor Adriano Celentano released a song called "Prisencolinensinanciusol" (roughly pronounced "Preesen colon en san an choose ohl"), which consisted of complete gibberish designed to make it sound like what American English sounded like to someone who didn't speak English. It was a big hit in Italy and several other European countries. The next year, British comedian Mike Reid released his own version, consisting of actual English words and phrases used in a nonsensical way (such as "You'll be comin' up choosin' a wife around the shore, hubba hubba and a cable on a coconut pie").
