Oldiesmann: Finally got the AmazonBot situation under control. I basically changed some server settings to tell AmazonBot that it's not allowed to access anything on the site. That should fix the speed issues we've been experiencing lately

I remember the movie, The Great Escape, but not the music?   The movie was good, so I assume the sound track was too?

I don't know about the rest of the soundtrack, but the march was pretty good, and a version with lyrics was recorded by Mitch Miller and company.

Tonight's silly find. A version of "Rawhide" with "Ghost Riders in the Sky" and a few other melodies thrown in, all done with a heavy Scottish accent.

Happy 90th Birthday Johnny Mathis!
This wonderful video is both sad and uplifting. Sad because he has grown old like the rest of us, but uplifting  that he is still willing to get out there and sing, for his many fans!  He sounds great for his age!
This video was recorded in January, 2025, so he was 89 here.

Oldiesmann

A funny novelty song from 1967 featuring parodies of "Tell It To The Rain", "Georgy Girl" and "We Ain't Got Nothin' Yet".

One of the more unusual renditions of that song. This was a hit on both sides of the pond, hitting #14 in the US and #2 in the UK. Stevens also won a Grammy for this arrangement.

Vanilla-Jackie

Lesley Gore was another version, she was just 17 at the time and best known for Its My Party and I'll Cry If I Want To and You Don't Own Me back in the 60's

Oldiesmann

A completely different "Misty" song from 1976. This was Dorothy Moore's biggest hit and the only song of hers to hit the top 20. This peaked at #3 in the US, #5 in Australia and the UK and #7 in Canada.

Latest strange find (and I don't even remember how I found this). The classic song "Rawhide" done with a heavy Scottish accent, with some minor lyrics changes, mixed in with "Ghost Riders in the Sky" and a couple of brief instrumental clips from other songs. This apparently came out in the 80s.

Back to the (slightly more) normal music, here's a Halloween song from Guy Lombardo and company, from the 1950 movie My Blue Heaven.

In 1956, blues singer Jay Hawkins intended to record "I Put a Spell on You" as a love ballad. Before the recording session, someone apparently brought in a bunch of food and liquor, and the song ended up being anything but a love ballad. The rest is history...

Awfully quiet in this topic lately  ???

A strange one from the late 50s. Despite the title, there are no other "parts" to this. Besides this, Linda Laurie is best known as the writer of "Leave Me Alone (Ruby Red Dress)", which was a big hit for Helen Reddy in 1973.

Oldiesmann

A forgotten gem from 1956 by actress/singer Helen Grayco - the wife of Spike Jones.

Oldiesmann

A fun forgotten tune from the guy who gave us "The Ballad of Davy Crockett", with a nice sprinkling of German mixed in. This is from 1956.

A recently released a capella version of Gordon Lightfoot's historical classic. The 50th anniversary of the event that this song is about is coming up in a few weeks.

Vanilla-Jackie

One of my all time favourite pieces and beautifully sung by Connie Frances " O Mein Papa "

Oldiesmann

A followup of sorts to "Tequila". Same saxophonist and vocalist, similar sound, just a different artist (I'm not sure if the rest of the members of The Champs played on this as well though).

Vanilla-Jackie

We have several versions of Ave Maria and, in my opinion, perhaps better than this but, i still think Connie Frances has done a superb job and is worth a play...

An excellent rendition of "Somewhere" from West Side Story by some talented Danes. Featuring the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Danish National Concert Choir and singer Maria Lucia Rosenberg.

Oldiesmann

An unusual serious song from Dick Smothers, who was of course better known for the comedy act The Smothers Brothers with his brother Tom. This is from 1967.

From 1987. This song always reminds me of the summer about a decade later when I was taking Driver's Ed at a local suburban high school. One week they took us to different areas to get used to driving on the highway, out in the country, etc. The area where they took us for "country" driving was in the midst of being transformed from farmland to expensive subdivisions. Today that area is one of the wealthier suburbs and you'll be hard pressed to find a farm out there.

I don't think I remember Jethro Tull the band. I am more familiar with Jethro Tull the agriculturalist who invented the seed drill and has been called the father of modern agriculture. I am guessing the band was named after him.

They've been around for a long time but have only had a few hits. In the UK, where they're from, they hit the top 10 with "Living in the Past" (#3 in 1969), "Sweet Dream" (#7 in 1969) and "The Witch's Promise" (#4 in 1970). In the US, they had two top 20 hits - a reissue of "Living in the Past" (#11 in 72) and "Bungle in the Jungle" (#12 in 74). "Bungle" and the 1971 song "Aqualung" (apparently only released as a single in Italy) are staples of classic rock stations these days.

Back to the music, here's a great progressive rock version of Bach's "Toccata and Fugue" from 1980. This was a hit in the UK and a couple of European countries.

An unusual rendition of the French language version of "Carioca". This was originally performed by Etta Moten in the 1933 film Fly Down to Rio and Les Paul had a hit with an instrumental version in 1952. The French version appeared in the mid 90s. The song seems to be more popular as an instrumental, but several artists have recorded this in English and a few other languages.

50 years ago tomorrow, the freighter SS Edmund Fitzgerald crashed and sank in a storm in Lake Superior, killing all 29 crew members. 9 months later it was immortalized in a song by Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot.

Lovely  Indian Summer days here in California this past week.  Reminds me of this beautiful old song, that was popular around the year 1940.   Indian Summer, by the Glenn Miller Orchestra, with Ray Eberly singing.  Wish I could step back in time to this day in history. ❤️

Hasn't been too bad this past week here in Ohio, but now we're in the midst of a cold snap and it's snowing. It's supposed to get back up into the mid to upper 50s by Wednesday though.

Heres a good CW song by Willie Nelson.  Reminds us that over our lifetime, we made many choices and decisions.  Some were right and some were wrong.  Some good and some bad,  but .  .  .
"There's Nothing I Can Do About It Now"

Oldiesmann

More fun from the French. A traditional middle eastern folk song that became a signature tune for surf guitarist Dick Dale, especially after its use in Pulp Fiction.
