If you enjoy Big Band music and have a PBS radio station, there is a one hour program on my local PBS station on Saturday nights at 10:00 p.m.  The disc jockey/host plays 40's dance tunes and gives a brief talk prior to playing them about the musicians, composers, etc.  I'm usually in my P.J.'s by that time and I spend a pleasant evening dancing (alone!) in my bedroom during this program.  Good exercise, too!  Check your local PBS station to see if it carries it--and old reruns of Marian McPartland Piano Jazz follows that program.  She died about 5-10 years ago.

Sue. Good to hear. Will try to find that station. Isn't cute how we we just dance when we hear those 40s 50s tunes. That should be good exercise for you leg.Has it improved a lot?

What are the Call Letters of that PBS station?  Maybe I can find something available on-line.

Rammel, my PBS radio station is located at Troy University south of Auburn where I live.  The station is run by Troy State students and is on daily from 7:00 a.m.  through the late night hours.  The station number is 89.9.  Columbus, Georgia, which is not far from Auburn also has a radio station in the low 80's--don't remember their station number, but sometimes I can get it on my radio.  The Troy station runs PBS news programs all day long and has music in the late evenings.  Perhaps if you have station numbers in the 80's you may have a similar station.

Sue and Rammel - I don't get any good music programs like that on either of my PBS radio stations . . . however, I do have a great music channel that I get on my computer, and usually have it on every evening when I'm sitting here and winding down from the day.  It's called Swing Street Radio, and they play nothing but 1930's, 40's and 50's music.  No commercials or promotions of an kind - just straight music.  (On weeknights only, between nine and ten, they play a one hour old radio show, which I don’t listen to. Tonight was Boston Blackie.)
Here's what it says on their internet home page . . .
"Swing Street Radio plays America’s best music from the Golden Age of Popular music, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! Tune in to Swing Street Radio at home or at the office via the internet, or anywhere on the go, via our mobile app! Just click on our logo at the left, or listen on your favorite player by clicking any of the player links below:" Those player links are, iTunes, Windows Media, Quicktime, and a couple of others.

Thank you, Marilyne.  I'll see if I can find it on my radio.

Marilyne,  I only saw California stations listed on the Swing Street Radio link.  Do you know if they have affiliates in other states - like Oklahoma?
Edit:  Never mind.  Did a Google search and every link to SSR had "missing-Oklahoma" underneath the info.  Oh, well!

Oklahoma's 14-year-old ventriloquist, Darcy Lynn Farmer (America's Got Talent winner), will be a guest on "Little Big Shots" this Sunday.  Her very first t.v. appearance  was on "Little Big Shots" when she was 11.  Will be interesting to see how she has matured.
She lives in a small community not far from where I live.  Am amazed we'd never heard more about her until she began to move up on "....Talent".

I'm enjoying the new season of "Call The Midwife" but I could do with a few less segments showing the birthing process.

My PBS station isn't showing anything very interesting since their last "fundathon".

JeanneP

Most of the PBS radio stations tie into the Local University station if you have a big one pretty close area. Same with such a Masterpiece Theatre. Done all show at the same time. Ours plays mostly Classical now. Which I like but would like to hear some from back in the 50s to 70s.
JeanneP

CallieOK

Jeanne,   our local university has a good PBS station but it, too, only plays classical.  Like you, I would like from the 40's and 50's (MY 50's - as in BE <Before Elvis>  ;D)

Marilyne

Callie - I agree 100% . . . BE!
Popular music changed drastically with Elvis, and steadily got worse over the years, until we now have Rap and Hip-Hop! :yikes: Take me back to the 30's, 40's and early 50's!
So sorry you can't get Swing Street Radio, on your computer.  They just played "The White Cliffs of Dover", by Vera Lynn, and now, "Cherokee", by Charley Barnett.  A wide variety of hits.

JeanneP - Lots of colleges/universities, have oldies radio stations. I wonder why that is?  Swing Street Radio, broadcasts out of San Francisco State U, I think?

SCFSue

I have Spectrum TV and they have about 20-25 music stations of all genre's.  When there is nothing I want to watch on TV, I turn to their channel 948 which is classical music.  Sometimes if I feel like dancing by myself, I turn to their 40's and 50's pop music channels.  Very little TV programming appeals to me, although I do have a few favorites.

Sue

CallieOK

I also have music channels on the tv but I don't really like "background" music unless I'm doing a lot of baking, etc. in the kitchen.  Don't ever have the car radio on, either.

"To Each His Own".......which was one of my favorite songs "back in the day".   ( Having an Intellectual Interlude and can't remember who recorded it.   :crazy2:)

FlaJean

I love the big band era but I also like Elvis!  The Beatles have some beautiful music.  I’m a fan of Petula Clark.  I don’t care for hip hop and not really fond of most country, although I enjoyed square dancing a lot.  I got rid of all the old vinyl records.  Never thought they would be collectibles.

SCFSue

My husband and I attended U. of South Carolina during the 50's.  We loved to dance and he was an officer in the Intra-Fraternity Council.  Twice a year they paid Big Bands to play at Fraternity Dances.  We were photographed standing at the bandstand when Tommy Dorsey was playing favorite 40's tunes.  Bob especially loved Glenn Miller and I still have his Glenn Miller limited edition album.  I think my sons may sell it when I pass on to "hopefully" my reward, but they might haggle over it!

After Bob retired, we joined the small local "country" club in our town.  They often had dances and the kids I'd taught in high school didn't really dance (this was the 70's).  They just sort of stood there and waved their arms in the air.  Some of the girls asked us to give dance lessons, but by that time Bob had his first bout of cancer and didn't feel up to it.  We still preferred big band dance tunes from the 40's--although we were college students in the mid-50's.

Sue

CallieOK

Sue,  I graduated from high school in 1953.  We jitterbugged to the Big Band sound and then learned the Shag by watching the first "American Bandstand" programs.
I remember Marge and Gower Champion performing at OU when I was in college.  Harry Belafonte appeared with them - with second billing; we'd never heard of him.   :)

JeanneP

We had all the big bands US bands playing in the UK during the war. Played in all the big dance halls. I got to see many of them s had a big US base close. Had Bob hope and many stars. I remember seeing Glenn Miller playing just before his plane went down.
We must have 20 music stations on our radios but only 2 where you can understand  what they're saying .i just buy the CDs of what I like.

My husband and I also met in college . . . in a social dance class, that we were required to take for a PE requirement. We became a couple, shortly thereafter, and the rest is history! :D  Lots of dancing going on at that time, at fraternity and sorority events,  both formal and casual, plus home parties, outdoor dance pavilions, and lovely indoor ballrooms.  It was a rare weekend, that didn't include dancing of some sort. AJ paid his way through college by playing in dance bands around town, and doing the musical arrangements for various bands. So for years, our lives revolved around pop music.

Later, when he was drafted into the Army, he was placed in the 72nd Army band, and stationed at Fort MacArthur in San Pedro, CA. The band members all "moonlighted" on weekends, and substituted in dance bands all around the Los Angeles area.  AJ played in the Les Brown band, a couple of times during our time there.(as a sub of course)  It was great military duty, and I loved it there. Wonderful place to live, wonderful friends, wonderful music!  Looking back, I think that the Army years, were some of our happiest years.

RAMMEL

Marilyne,
That plays nice on Windows Media Player.
I also set it up on a program I have ( MPC-HC ) for quick access. You can Google MPC-SC.

The only new show that I’ve watched recently, is Roseanne, and it’s much better than I thought it would be. It’s like Roseanne Barr and John Goodman have been in a time capsule for the past 20 years, and have suddenly popped out again!    Whether you like her personally or not, she really is funny. I could relate to some of the conversations, and laughed out loud at a couple of her comments.  The supporting cast is mostly the same, which makes the whole idea more believable.
Has anybody else watched it?

JeanneP

Watched the first one but missed last week. I think it worth watching. She sure looks better now than in the old one.
On tonight at 7pm here.

Vanilla-Jackie!  Sorry I neglected to mention how much I enjoyed the video/music of Les Brown! I also enjoyed reading that bit of history that preceded the video.  I'm sure you know, but in case you don't - Doris Day, is still alive and lives not far from me here in Northern California.  She is celebrating her 97th birthday in May!  She is still active in dog and cat rescue.

Vanilla-Jackie

Marilyne...
...no, I ddint know she was a neighbour of yours... what a marvellous achievement to be still actively caring for dogs and cats at her age...

I'm still watching Roseanne on Tuesday nights.  Like most sit-coms, it's silly, but I have to admit that there are some things about the adult daughters, that do hit home! LOL ::)

Other than that show, the only other one that I'm still following, is Homeland, starring Claire Danes and Mandy Patinkin.  I know I've asked over the years, but I guess I'm the only one in this discussion who has ever watched it?  Game of Thrones, returns again in May.  Dungeons & Dragons style Fantasy, is usually not something that interests me, but AJ and I have enjoyed this series from the very beginning.  The only complaint I have with it, as well as Homeland, and other series, is that after a run of 10 or 12 shows, you have to wait a full year for more.  That's unacceptable, and I will not get involved with any more series on HBO or Showtime, as soon as these two have reached their final season.

I would like to recommend an old movie, that I recorded off of TCM a couple of weeks ago.  It's called Dear Heart, from 1964, and stars Glenn Ford, Geraldine Page, and Angela Lansbury.   It's a warm and sweet romantic comedy, and I do think you all would really enjoy it.  I think you can get it On Demand, or in your free movies?

Marilyne

Does anyone else like to watch the HGTV show, Fixer Upper, with Chip and Joanna?  I saw a brand new one a couple of nights ago that was really good, and a departure from the usual home renovations that they are famous for.  Now they seem to be focused on large scale improvements, all around the city of Waco.

First they bought The Silo's, and put in a bakery, and a number of other boutique style shops.  After that, they did a Bed and Breakfast Inn.  Now they’ve purchased a large old restaurant, that looks to be on a busy corner in town. They remodeled the whole interior, and added outdoor patio seating, play area, gift shop, etc.  Of course, when they were finished, it was absolutely gorgeous!  It showed the grand opening, with people lined up to get in.  I'm sure it will be a success, as everything they touch, turns to gold.

I understand that Joanna is expecting another baby, (#5), so it will be interesting to see if she slows down a little, or is able to continue on with the show and the remodeling projects?

Marilyne, I seem to watch less TV, now that the days are getting longer. I spend more time in the sun room.  I put the TV on when I go to bed about 11 and watch till 1  also read.  I watch the new Hallmark a lot, it is 189 on Long Island  I still watch some HG

I watch it fairly regularly.  I like a few of the "Fix-It-Up" shows.  Then there are some I don't care for - as my son would say, "contrived".

Once in a while I watch "First Time Flippers".  I see it more as a comedy than instructional.

I am a devoted fan of our long running ( 1960 ) Coronation Street (UK soap, ) but oh how it has changed, and not for the better...now has story lines of rape, brutal murders, lesbians and gays which we now get the intimate kissing scenes...now if the likes of Ena Sharples and Annie Walker were still alive, I am sure they would be turning in their grave to see how it is now...It has far too many actors and story lines, some dragging on before other stories are finished...Sadly it was known for its humour, which kept this soap at the number one spot, it is now going down in the ratings...Guess like most everything, the writers and producers are gearing this to the young...and forgetting us older viewers who have watched this from its early days when it was just centred around the street and the pub...

Rick - I agree with your son, that most of the shows on HGTV, are "contrived"!
A couple goes to look at three houses, and you can count on the same familiar scenario: #1: The kitchen is never good enough, and always needs complete remodeling and updating. #2: Any and all carpet must be removed and replaced with hardwood floors. #3: Walls have to be removed to achieve "open concept" between the kitchen and living area.  etc. etc. etc.   Nonetheless, my husband and I get a kick out of these buyers, and we like to watch these shows for an hour or two in the early evening.  Our favorites are the Beachfront or Lakefront shows.  Also the, Log Cabin Living, is interesting.

Jackie - I've heard about Coronation Street, and it's popularity throughout the UK.  We had a few long running "soaps", but seems that most have all disappeared, in favor of the celebrity talk shows that are shown in the afternoon.  It started with Oprah, and now the most popular one is, Ellen.  Although I like both Oprah and Ellen, I've never cared for that style of show, with the  live audience screaming and clapping, and the endless parade of famous celebrity guests.  There are a few soaps left that are shown every morning, like Days of Our Lives.  I've never been able to sit and watch a show in the morning, so I haven't seen that one, or the morning talk shows like The Today Show, or Good Morning America.   My TV viewing takes place in the early evening, and up to about 11:00 PM.  Occasionally I'll watch a movie in the afternoon.
