I haven't seen Spotlight,  but I am going to when I can   stream it.

What a Tragedy... and heart breaker.

But I do want to see it.

I hadn't heard of Longmire. I don't watch much T.V. So just checked my library. DVD and they have all the seasons have checked out first 2.

Quotefans will be hoping for another cutting edge season of Longmire when Season 5 premieres on Netflix in September

Found an article about Longmire and apparently they have started filming for Season 5.  Sept. is a long time away but something to look forward to.

Phyllis, thanks for the information on the upcoming season of Longmire. September seems like a long way off, but we all know how quickly the months fly by.

We've started watching the brand new season of Game of Thrones.  Only two shows so far . . . good, but not great.  After following many episodic TV dramas over the years, I do think that most shows tend to start going downhill after four or five seasons. The writers seem to run out of ideas or maybe they start losing interest?   The show is adapted from a series of fantasy novels called, A Song of Ice and Fire, by George R.R. Martin.

I'm looking forward to Spotlight, and hope to see it over this coming weekend.  I'm sure I can watch it On Demand, for a hefty price, but maybe I can get it at Redbox for $1.50?

Mostly hockey playing on our TV this past week, because the San Jose Sharks, are in the midst of the playoffs.  I will often sit down toward the end of a game, and watch the last five minutes or so, but I rarely sit through a whole game.  Usually I find something to watch on the other TV, or I just do computer stuff.  Saturday night, I watched the weekly PBS movie, which was Mr. Smith Goes To Washington, 1939, starring James Stewart and Jean Arthur.

I was pretty shocked to see that the underlying theme of the story, was about the political corruption in Washington, and how politicians are manipulated by money and greed!  Just goes to show that things have not changed in the past 75 years!  I suspect that PBS purposely choose that movie, to make a point during this turbulent election year.

phyllis

That was one of my favorite movies and I liked everything that Jimmy Stewart did.  I agree that not much has changed.  Disheartening, isn't it?  But, our nation has survived so I guess we just keep hoping that continues to be the case in spite of what the politicians do.....or don't do.

The movie tonight on my PBS channel is The Philadelphia Story, 1940, starring Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant and James Stewart.  I saw it recently on Turner, so I won't watch it again so soon.  It's a good romantic comedy, and I think those of you who have it playing on your PBS channel tonight would enjoy it.  As I mentioned, last week was Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, which might be on some of your local channels tonight?   I remember that the PBS Saturday Night Movie selection, plays on different weekends, across the country.

No hockey game tonight, so we may watch The Imitation Game, on our free On Demand movies.  I haven't checked to see if Spotlight is playing, but if so I would very much like to see it.

I've been wondering if any of you have watched the British drama series, River?  It's available on Netflix, and consists of only six episodes.  We watched #one a couple of nights ago, and thought it was very good, and very different. Pretty heavy stuff, but excellent acting.  The main character of Detective John River, is played by Stellan Skarsgard.  I've seen him in other British shows, but can't remember what they were?  I'll have to look him up on IMDb.

FlaJean

I have watched a couple in the "River" series.  It is different but is well acted like you said.  I've also watched Series one of "Hinterland" a Welsh show which was redone for English audiences.  I found it rather depressing and didn't continue with Series 2.  I've been watching less TV and trying to read more.

FlaJean - We've still only watched the first episode in the River, series, but are looking forward to the rest of them.  I was impressed with #1, so hope that the remaining five are just as good.

Saturday night we watched the movie, The Imitation Game.  I can surely see why it was nominated for so many Academy Awards.  I would recommend it to anyone who likes a good drama, based on a true story.  The same applies to The Theory of Everything, the life of Stephen Hawking.  Both films are playing on my free On Demand movies.

Does anyone else besides me like the old Jeanette MacDonald/Nelson Eddy musicals?  The stories are so corny, but the music, costumes and scenery are fun the see and listen to.  I watched Maytime, on TCM a couple of days ago, ("Sweetheard, Sweetheart, Sweetheart"!), and found it to be very relaxing.  My favorite is Naughty Marietta, so I'm hoping it will come up soon and I can record it for future viewing.

I have just finished watching 6 tv episodes of " Undercover...." staring a brilliant actress " Sophie Okonedo, personally I think she should win an Oscar or the tv equivalent for the part she played...the other brilliant actor was Adrian Lester playing her hubby.....I found it at times a tad complicated to follow, also a few flashbacks but, I got the gist of the story......I did read up it is coming to America some time this year after its aired on our tv.....Just want to say I fully enjoyed it....Link to story, plot, including trailer, bottom of the page.........

Jackie.  That will be a series worth Watching. Will see if it comes over here.  Seems like all we have now is Police shows.  Not had one with a cast of Black players. Time will tell if we get it.

Marilyne

Jackie - I really like Sophie Okonedo.  Her acting has impressed me in the two movies that I've seen her in.  My favorite was her role as the retarded sister, in The Secret Life of Bees.  All of the women were wonderful in that film, but she was outstanding.  I also saw her in Hotel Rwanda , and she was good in that one as well.  I'll be looking forward to watching Undercover, when it comes to the US.

Marilyne, first time I ever watched her, never heard of her, nor seen her before but...I thought her acting was brillant, both her changeble positions as a family and her career....

Jeanne P, perhaps your UK friends have watched it, maybe you will get some feedback from them.....

That sounds very promising, Jackie.  I'm looking forward to it.

I have been watching the Aaron Sorkin HBO series, "Newsroom", on Amazon Prime and I think it is the best TV I've seen for a long while.  Sorkin's rapid dialog is a little hard to follow sometimes but, as Jackie said, I get the gist of it.  Good acting from Jeff Daniels, Sam Waterston, and I even like Jane Fonda in this one.  Dev Patel is in it also plus a bunch of other young actors who are excellent.  I'm coming to the next to the last episode of the 2nd season.  Unfortunately, it only ran for 3 seasons.

Phyliss, "Newsroom" was one of the better TV series of late.  I was devastated when it finished its run, 3 seasons.  And once again, I have to comment on "ensemble acting".
A show with this many characters, but each doing their role proud!  Reminiscent of "The West Wing" which IMHO was the best TV Series ever.

FlaJean

We didn't have HBO during the Newsroom but I saw the first series on my daughter's HBO.  I really liked it.  I hope I can find Series 2 & 3.  It has been several years since I watched Series 1.  I also loved "The West Wing".

maryz

I watched "Newsroom" on On Demand (I think) or it may have been on DVDs from the library or from Netflix.  It is an exceptional series, and I recommend it highly!  I don't have HBO either.

The West Wing,  all Seven seasons is now showing on NetFlix...

The Newsroom,  all three seasons is now showing on
Amazon Prime.

Is anyone else in the midst of watching Game of Thrones? This season has been good so far, but I have to confess that I wish it were the last of the series.  I like the show, but I feel it has gone on long enough, and time to bring all the various stories to a logical, (or illogical), conclusion.  Of course the show is adapted from a book, so I suppose there is a conclusion out there somewhere?

Some series shows seem to end at exactly the right time, whereas others go on too long, and then have a unsatisfactory ending. Boardwalk Empire was the perfect example of "unsatisfactory".  I loved that show so much, but the last season was terrible. House of Cards, seemed to drag a little this past season, with lots of unrealistic story lines.  Others end abruptly, before all loose ends are tied up, like Treme

Anyway . . . coming back this week on Netflix, is Bloodline. I thought the first season was excellent, but can't imagine what they could possibly do, or how they could go on without the character of Danny??

Now I'm hooked on the British series, River.  Only six episodes, and that's supposed to be all.  I hope they stick with it, and do not go into a second season.

Radioman34

Marilyne I'm a Game Of Thrones fanatic, and unlike you I hope it never ends. :D

As far a story line goes, the book is still a work in progress; GRR Marin is still writing it.  The tv series, however, has actually caught up with all of the books, and the story is now being written by tv writers.  This may account for any nuanced alterations that may have been detected, although I have found the transition to be quite seamless.

Tomereader1

Marilyne, is "TheRiver" a streaming Netflix series?  Is it Masterpiece?  BBC?  Does BBCAmerica have it?  I'm interested but can't seem to find it.

Marilyne

Tome - River, is on my streaming Netflix. It originally played as a series in the UK, but I don't know if it was on BBC?  There are only six episodes, and as far as I know there aren't any more being produced?  We've seen five of them, and will watch the final one Tuesday night. (Hockey finals on TV tonight).

Don - I am also a big Game of Thrones fan, although I do hate to see a series run long after the original script is finished . . . or in this case, after the book has been completed. (I didn't know that GRR Martin was still writing it!)  I thought last night's episode seemed to be a bit scattered?  Only about five minutes spent on each one of the stories.

Sandy

Regarding Bloodline Season 2    (hooray)..
I do believe  that they are
going to utilize Danny by using dreams
and flashbacks....  Plus they probably
have tons of film on the floor that they
can use..

I do believe that the character "Danny"
is not going away very soon.

I am really looking forward to
this next Season.

Plus... Big Brother 18
is returning on June 22..

It is on three times a week,  and I
follow it.    Meaning I "tune in" each
night and listen in for a while.
Especially when someone is getting
booted off.

For me it is entertaining to follow along
and watch  to see how silly and foolish
it is...  but I am hooked on it and have
watched just about every season.
Partly because Summertime most of the
good shows that I like go on hiatus,
so Big Brother is a good filler.     (a few
minutes of it a night) ....

(Summertime "fun for the feeble minded?" ..

Marilyne, well, I found out the mistake I was making.  The name of the series is "River" not The River.  River is the guy's name obviously.  It will be available on DVD from Netflix and I put it in my queue for when it comes out.

Since my hockey team didn't make it, I guess I can say  "Go Sharks" if that's your team!

Marilyne

Sandy - tell us about Big Brother?  Is it a late night TV show, or a radio program?  Sounds interesting.  I used to listen to late night radio talk shows in the long ago, but haven't gotten hooked on anything in recent years.
As for Bloodline, I thought all the actors were excellent - just that Danny seemed to be the major character in that first season.  However, I know I'll like season #2, (with or without Danny), and I'm looking forward to it next weekend!

Tome - Yes, the San Jose Sharks!  First major league pro team we've ever had in SJ, and hoping they win the Stanley Cup.

If you like psychological drama, you will enjoy "River".  When you get your DVD's, be sure to turn on the closed captioning.  Both AJ and I have a hard time with the British accents, so cc is a must!

Tomereader1

"Big Brother" is one of those awful "reality shows", much worse than "Survivor". THe only reality show I watch, not even regularly, is The Amazing Race.  I love to see the countries the contestants get to go to, and the culture of those areas, with the contestants having to perform a skill relative to that country.  There is all the back-stabbing and "playing" of the different teams but nowhere on the level of Survivor.  To me, IMHO, Big Brother is just another effort to see how many of the contestants can hop into the sack with the others.  But, to each his own.

Sandy

We watched the final episode of River, last night, and I have to repeat myself once again . . . I love this series!  I'm sure I'll watch it again, especially the last episode, where all the loose ends are finally resolved.  However, AJ and I were not in total agreement, as to the ending . . . which is why I need to see it again.
I highly recommend this show, but only if you like psychological drama.  It is not particularly violent at all.  The characters are all likable, and the story is about as unusual a one, as you will ever encounter!  Stellan Skarsgard, is my new favorite actor.

FlaJean

Marilyne, I only watched one and part of another one because my husband just didn't care for it at all.  I'm going back and look at it from the beginning.
