I was 8 years old in 1945, but I knew lots of popular tunes.  On Saturdays, my Dad's never married female cousin lived with our grandmother as my sisters and I did.  She was a beautician who only worked half days on Saturdays (forgive me if I've mentioned this before).  I was the oldest and my next sister was only 20 months younger.  So on Saturdays, we walked to town to her beauty shop and when she was finished she walked with us to the news stand which was only a few blocks away.  She bought each of us a comic book (Archie, Donald Duck and other Disney comics) and also an orange or green rough paper pamphlet that had the lyrics of all the hit parade tunes.  We listened to the Hit Parade on the radio and knew and sang all the lyrics to every tune they played.

We also started singing in church choirs when we were very young.  I continued to sing in choirs after High School and College, especially in Navy towns where my husband was stationed.  After he died in 2002, I moved to Auburn in 2004 and only sang once in the choir at my new church.  It was on a special Sunday in the summer when the female vocalists sang.  The following Sunday, the male choir members also sang alone.  Now I just sing in my seat in the congregation.

Hi Gloria and Sue - Yesterday was filled with lots of good memories of past 4th of July's.  Now I remember mostly, by watching the movies that play every year.  We love "Yankee Doodle Dandy", even though it's pretty corny in lots of the dialogue. (Father's bedside death scene in particular). Nonetheless, it's a wonderful movie, and from what I have read, it's an accurate depiction of George M. Cohan's life. I look forward to the stage scene where Cagney sings and dances his famous dance, to Yankee Doodle Dandy.  After that was over, we switched to "The Capital Fourth", and enjoyed all that live music and celebration.

I recorded lots of other movies that were playing on TCM and other channels, so I'll have plenty to watch for a while.  Tonight I hope to see, "Four Jills in a Jeep", which is a fun Wartime movie. I haven't seen it in a couple of years, so don't remember anything except for the good 1940's music by lots of singers from that era. The four Jills are played by Carol Landis, Kay Francis, Martha Raye and Mitzi Mayfair.  I don't remember ever hearing of Mitzi, except for this movie?

Did anyone watch "Holiday Inn", on TCM?  They play it every year also, because of that wonderful Firecracker Dance" by Fred Astaire.

When we lived in Maryland we used to go to live theater in Columbia MD not far from where we lived.  One of the plays was “Yankee Doodle Dandy” and the Star was a professional and did that dance the same as Cagney.  It was a great performance.  Another play we enjoyed so much was “Fiddler on the Roof”.  They usually had some national professionals as well as local actors and all the performances were so good. There is something really special about live theater.

Marilyne

Looks like it's been a week since I posted here!  Wish I could say that I've been busy doing all sorts of fun and exciting things, instead of just the usual. . . but I'm afraid it's been the same old stuff.  Nothing very interesting in sight either.

Jean - Your mention of the dancer in the live theater version of Yankee Doodle Dandy being just as good as James Cagney, reminded me of something similar. Our youngest daughter was in a local theater production of The Music Man, when she was about fourteen.  We were wondering how the actor who played Professor Harold Hill, could possibly pull off that famous Robert Preston rendition of, "Ya Got Trouble".  It was the show stopper number, in both the Broadway show and the movie.  Well, the actor in this local production was fabulous -  never missed a beat, and was every bit as good as Preston himself!   He got a standing ovation, and definitely deserved it.

Nothing much to talk about as far as TV is concerned.  We did watch the TCM movie, Four Jills in a Jeep.  It was a disappointment, but entertaining, because of all the vintage stars who were in it.  I wouldn't watch it again, however.  We haven't watched any movies this week, and nothing much on Netflix or Amazon.  Seems like I'm getting extremely hard to please, when I comes to TV?  Well, lots of new stuff starting up in August and September.

Marilyne

Has anyone seen any TV shows (or movies) lately, that are worth watching?  I've sampled a lot of shows this summer, but haven't been enthusiastic about any of them. Last night we decided to watch Sharp Objects, the new miniseries that just started on HBO.  I like Amy Adams, and because she was starring in it, along with Patricia Clarkson, I figured it had to be good.  We watched episode #1 last night, and it was sad, morbid, creepy and depressing. :(   Amy Adams, never smiled once through the entire hour, which gives you an idea of the mood of the story.  I didn’t realize that Gillian Flynn, author of Gone Girl, also wrote the book Sharp Objects, from which this series was adapted.  If I had known, I wouldn’t have watched it, being as I hated Gone Girl.  Seems that in recent years,  everyone likes dark and creepy thrillers, featuring psychopaths.  I don’t . . . just not my style.

So does anyone have any recommendations?  Being as I have HBO, plus Netflix and Amazon, I can often see shows from regular broadcast TV, that I missed the first time around.  I'm interested in the series, Southern Charm, that's been playing for years on Bravo.  Has anyone seen it?  When it appears on HBO or one of the others, without commercials, I plan to watch it.

Tomereader1

Marilyne, and anyone else interested, if you have Amazon Prime, there are two series which are imminently watchable.  "The Last Post" set in Adan (Aden) with the British Army, c. 1965.  Be sure and put the CC on, though it's not as hard to understand as some British-made series.  It has some violence (war time), some sex, but excellent story lines.  "The Heat of the Sun" set in Kenya, very good series. (Not to be confused with another movie more recent called Heat of the Sun).  Both movies have few episodes (I think about 6) so you can binge watch without being tied up forever.  Let me know if any of you watch, and how you felt about the two series.

Marilyne

Hi Tome!  Good to see you posting. Thanks for recommending the two Netflix shows.  I'll probably pick one of them to watch tonight, and will let you know tomorrow what I think.

Tomereader1

They are Amazon Prime, not netflix.

I try not to watch any sad shows. This last month we got a new TV Station. Yes TV.  It shows a lot of old shows, I watched Sonny and Cher the other night also at 10PM on Sunday they show the Old Johnny Cash show.
I always watch GMA, the Create TV and a few of the old game shows and one soap GH for over 50 years Of course at night I watch Turner channel, or one of the 3 Hallmarks. Of course a lot of golf. I do pay extra forthe golf channel At 94 I do not enjoy the new programs

Tome: we watched episode #1 of The Last Post, and both us liked it a lot!  Finally, a show with some substance and some history!  The acting was great, and the story was different.  I liked it right away which is a good sign.  I've always leaned toward books and movies that are based on a true event, or that take place during an important or changing time in history.  I'm looking forward to this whole series.  Thanks so much for the tip! :)

I just added Bravo Now to my Roku  (free if you have a cable account that
carries Bravo) ......   And started watching "Southern Charm",
which I wasn't sure that I would like,  but it is pretty interesting... and I
intend to watch from Year 1,  Episode 1....

Being from New England,  I don't often relate to
stories from the south...   But I think that I am going
to enjoy this one.

Plus I think that Bravo Now  probably has a lot more good series
for me to watch..

Thanks Marilyn ....    I will try to make a list of
shows that I like on Netflix,  Prime and hulu etc...
The list will be long,  and not necessarily for everyone,
but I do enjoy them.       :knuppel2:   :coolsmiley:

Sandy, thanks for the Southern Charm suggestion.  My Cox cable has Bravo so I can check it out thru my Apple TV (similar to Roku).  I didn’t realize that Bravo had series.

SCFSue

I don't watch daytime TV anymore, although I was once a fan of the long running soap, Days of our Lives.  Now I spend the afternoon reading library books and when I run out of them before my son takes me to the library on Friday, I reread a favorite or two.  I did happen to turn on TV one day recently to see the weather channel as we were expecting some rough weather and decided to check out "Days".  It has the same characters and pretty much the same plots, so I won't be looking at that any time soon!

Tomereader1

Marilyne, I'm so very glad you liked #1 of The Last Post.  Of the two series I mentioned, this one was my favorite, but Heat of the Sun is very, very good too.
I love books and/or movies/TV that deal with different periods in History, as all of us didn't get a really good indoctrination about history in other countries.

Enjoy!

Marilyne

Thank you all for responding!

Gloria - Those old variety shows from the 70's and 80's, are fun to watch.  I used to like Sonny and Cher, and would like to take another look after so many years.  I remember the beautiful gowns that Cher wore on that show.  Two others that I liked at that time, were The Andy Williams Show, and The Carol Burnett Show.

Sandy - I have Roku, so I'll add Bravo Now, and see if I can get Southern Charm. I had never heard of the show, but was scrolling through the cable channels, and happened upon it and started watching it.  I saw the one new episode, and liked it enough that I did some research online, and was surprised at how long it's been playing.  It looks to be all about relationships between a group of friends who have know each other all their lives.  The setting is Savannah, which is a place I've always wanted to visit.

SCFSue - I don't watch daytime TV either, but I do enjoy relaxing with it in the evening.  AJ and I are usually following a series together, but there are others that he likes and watches, that have too much violence for me.  We both like Turner Classic Movies, so we can always turn to that channel, or watch some of the classic movies we have recorded on our DVR from Turner.

Jean - If you have Amazon, you and Larry might also like the show that Tomereader recommended, The Last Post.  It's a British series, of six episodes, so isn't overly long and drawn out.  As Tome said, be sure to turn on your closed captioning, as the Brit accents are sometimes are to understand.

Tome - I'll keep you posted on the show.  We'll most likely finish it by next weekend.  Then we'll start Heat of the Sun.

Marilyne, I don’t have Amazon.  It does sound interesting.  Maybe Acorn will eventually pick it up and I can watch it.

CallieOK

Thanks for the info on Southern CharmI have Bravo and notice that two episodes are on tonight.  I'm recording them in case I'm not paying attention to the time.
Neither one is marked as a "new episode".  Are there currently reruns being shown?

Could someone give me a run-down on the general story line?

I've been to Savannah several times on tours and loved it.

Tomereader1

I turned Bravo on last nite, guide said "Southern Charm" and it was a bunch of folks sitting on couches, discussing breast feeding, or not. LIke a talk show.  Is this an actual show?  Didn't have anything about Savannah. Or any storyline.  One gal sitting there with her "Obviously Augmented Boobs" trying to escape from her dress.  If this is the show "Southern Charm", y'all can have it.
What?????

CallieOK

Same here, Tomereader.

FlaJean

I haven’t seen any episodes of Southern Charm yet, but plan on checking it out soon with the first series by streaming it on my Apple TV.  Just finished a couple of series on Acorn and looking for something new while watching Pie in the Sky now and then.  I am so tired of the Food Network which shows mostly Guy and Diner shows or reruns, and HGTV constant reruns.

It’s too hot to do much outside and I am sure looking forward to autumn.

Marilyne

Callie and Tome - I must have seen an episode from another season?  It featured two  different couples - both in their early thirties.  One couple went to a lovely old park in Savannah, and were playing bocce ball, and just talking.  You could see the horse-drawn carriages going by in the background.  Also the camera scanned the statues in the park and I'm pretty sure one of them was the statue of the girl from, "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil"?  I think the series has evolved over the years, from when this group of friends were in college, until now, they're in there 30's, and unmarried.

Sandy

Many seasons of "Southern Charm" are on
"Bravo Now" which I get on my Roku....   They just talk about life in Savannah  and relationships along the way...

I am not really interested in this so I  haven't watched many episodes.        (like lifestyles of the rich and famous)

There are many many episodes over many many years.

Just a "for what it's worth".

Lately I've noticed that the TV Guide (on the TV) has errors, especially for the PBS stations.  Could this have been the "Southern Charm" problem?
It's the WINDMILLS

Tomereader1

This was the Guide in my TV Weekly, and I tried it again today, and it still had "chat" going on (this one was more like Jerry Springer without the fights!)  And my Dish network Guide showed it as "Southern Charm" so unless everything has run amok, I don't see myself becoming a fan of this "so-called show".

CallieOK

There were re-run episodes of "Southern Charm" during the afternoon so the "cast party" must have been something extra.
Sounds as if they're trying to copy the popular show "Friends".   IMO, it isn't working!
Not interested.

Tomereader1

Me too, Callie.  Rather spend an hour reading!
There is so much absolute "junk" on cable (Dish) nowadays.  Everything is "reality shows",  with zero reality.  I think back to when A&E had such good programming and even the History Channel seems to have gone down the tubes.

SCFSue

I don't turn my TV on anymore in the daytime.  Just too much time wasted on silly and useless programs, IMO.  My favorite activity is reading and my son takes me to the library every Friday so that I can get plenty of books for the following week.

I agree with you all, on the quality of daytime TV programming.  At night, it's not good either, on most of the old standard "free" channels like NBC, CBS and ABC. This is why cable, premium channels like HBO, and new programming like Netflix, Amazon and Hulu, have taken over.  The monthly cost is minimal, and you don't have to sit through long and repetitious commercial breaks.  I just don't have the patience anymore.

The main thing that I rely on, is movies!  When all else fails, there are always good movies to be found.  I'm not fond of most of the recent ones, but the Academy Award nominated films are worth watching.

TCM, (Turner Classic Movies), is my mainstay!  Both my husband I enjoy watching most of what is shown on that channel. The old musicals from MGM or 20th Century Fox, are entertaining and feature all of the talented singer and dancers from generations past.  The Westerns and the war movies with John Wayne are really good.

The Alfred Hitchcock dramas are timeless!  I never get tired of watching James Stewart in Vertigo, Rear Window, or The Man Who Knew Too Much . . . or Cary Grant, in North By Northwest!   Gregory Peck, Audrey Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart, Vivien Leigh, and Clark Gable are all still there for us to enjoy!  If you don't have TCM, it's worth the extra money!

I enjoy TCMâ€"even the black and white “Thin Man” movies with William Powell and Myrna Loy.  There have been some good recent movies such as: Bridge of Spies, Sully, and The Post.  I’m not really a big movie fan so I don’t bother with most of the recent movies.  I prefer a movie based on a real event that follows the facts as much as possible.  Dead Poet’s Society was a really good movie with Robin William’s outstanding performance.  I didn’t realize until recently that it was based on real events.
