Hi Sandy
Try watching the original UK House of Cards!

Absolutely brilliant

Kelly

Joy

Thanks, Marilyn for the welcome.  I don't know why I have been so lax in not paying attention to this board.  Between the Internet and the television, I pay a lot, but I consider that my entertainment.  I don't need a whole lot of "things" anymore and I don't go out that much anymore, so I don't feel like I am wasting my money.

Sandy, I watched Days of Our Lives from the very beginning. Years and years.  For some reason,  a couple years ago, I kind of lost interest and now when it comes on,  I can't make heads or tails out of it.  I see that Stefano keeps re-appearing and don't know any of the young family members anymore.  And, I also see that Patch has shown up again and Julie and her husband.  They are some of the ones who have been around since the beginning, almost.   Lots of new faces.  Since I stopped watching it, I am not interested in any others.

I cannot get interested in any of the British shows. I just have a hard time understanding the British dialect.

I also like the History and Discovery Channels.  I don't get National Geographic anymore.  They change the package deals every once in a while.

The soaps kill people off and
bring them back all the time...
No rhyme or reason to it.
I use the TV  as a "companion" so that I can
turn off or at at will!   :2funny:

I will get around to watching the
British House of Cards soon.
I just have to remember that they
are two completely different shows
and enjoy each one  (US and British)
for its own very special content.

Marilyne

Hi Tome!  So glad you're back here in Television Today, as well as all the other Leisure Activities boards!  Let us know what you've been watching over the past week??

Joy - We also pay a lot for our full TV package, plus Netflix and Amazon Streaming. Like you, we only go out on special occasions,  and we don't travel anywhere anymore, where we have to stay overnight.  So TV is our main entertainment also.  Besides all the movies and channels like HBO, Showtime, et al, our Comcast package also has a lot of sports programming that we don't get on regular broadcast or basic cable.  I don't care about sports, (except for during the Olympics), but my husband likes hockey, baseball, and college football.

We have a hard time understanding British or Australian accents too, so we are dependent on closed captioning. In fact we are dependent on cc for ALL of the shows we watch.

sandy - I'm so happy to see someone else who watched Bloodline!  I thought it was excellent, and was totally stunned at the end of season one. What an ending! :o  I haven't heard if the show will continue on, but I don't see how they can make it work, without Danny?

Sandy

Marilyn
Bloodline was great...
I am sure that they will work
around danny having died.

Probably by flash backs to
the past (that we missed the
first time around)

Hopefully it will be back to
continue the Bloodline saga!

Right now I am on Season 1 Epi 10 of
"Being Human"  (US Version) !

Fun!

Hi Joy
I watch some of the American dramas and comedies.

But for the same reason you say about the English accents.  I cannot always enjoy the American programmes because of the regional accents in America.

Though I can understand the Australian accents regarding television programmes.

Kelly

Kelly

Hi Marilyne
I find as I said to Joy some American accents hard to understand. But I don't with Canadian accents and as I said Australian accents.

Kelly

so_P_bubble

no Kelly, I much prefer books and letting my imagination work on how the people there look.

Also I find sitting in front of that screen more tiring than being with a book in hand.

Kelly

Hi Bubble
You have a good point.

I do like to read books, but mostly history books.

Kelly

so_P_bubble

I don't know what I would do without  books or without knitting.

Kelly

Hi Bubble
I only tried to knit once!

Kelly

so_P_bubble

Maybe try carpet making with latch crochet.  Many males like to do that.

JeanneP

Did all who follow it watch the opening last night of the new. "Call the Midwife" ? Was good.
JeanneP

Kelly

Hi Bubble
My hands won't let me do that.

The mind is willing, the hands sadly won't.

Hi Bubble

The Saturday Night Movie on PBS this past weekend, was Sense and Sensibility, from 1995.  This film version of the Jane Austen book, is especially good - starring Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant, and Alan Rickman. Sometimes the same movie plays on PBS channels across the country, so I'm hoping that some of you also watched it?

JeanneP - I forgot all about Call the Midwife, so missed it Sunday night.  Fortunately, I can catch up On Demand!

so_P_bubble

Jane Austen books are usually quite good on films.  Pity I cannot watch this one here :(

Kelly

Hi Everyone
I watched on catch up last night Father Brown, very good.

But I read the there was a film called Father Brown, starring Sir Alec Guiness.  I must look to see if it is on DVD.

Kelly

phyllis

Unfortunately, our local PBS does not have a "Saturday Night Move".  I would have watched Sense and Sensibility for the umpteenth time!   ;D

Alan Rickman was one of my favorite actors.  Had a wonderful voice and was so much fun to watch as Snape in the Harry Potter films.  It is sad to think that we will see no more new movies by him but I can still enjoy the old ones when I come across them.

Hi Phyllis
I liked Alan Rickman in 'Robin Prince of Thieves'.

In which he played the Sheriif of Nottingham, part of the Robin Hood story

Kelly

phyllis

He played so many different kinds of parts, Kelly, and played them all well.  He was a wonderful character actor.

Hi phyllis

Indeed he was.

Kelly

Alan Rickman - I do not remember the name, so went to see his picture.  Looks very familiar.  Did he do any of the series on TV?  he reminds me a little of Jack in 3 is company.

phyllis

I think he did some work on tv but mostly he was a movie and play actor.  Do you agree, Kelly?

Marilyne

phyllis -  Along with Sense and Sensibility, I'm also a fan of  the many different versions of Pride and Prejudice.  My favorite is the most recent movie, starring Kiera Knightly and Matthew Macfadyen.  I would dearly love to see the 1940 movie of P&P, starring Greer Garson as Elizabeth, and Laurence Olivier as Mr. Darcy.  I'm sure it must play on Turner Classics, but so far I haven't seen it listed?

Kelly

Hi Phyllis
As far as I know Alan Rickman was  mostly in films.

Marilyne, some time this past winter, TCM had the Pride and Prejudice film made in 1940 with Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier--it was not on prime time as I recall, but I think on an early Sunday afternoon.  Garson was lovely and Olivier was a bit hammy, IMO.  However, just being able to watch it was a real treat.

Sue

Kelly

Hi Sue
Lord Olivier is thought to be the finest English actor there has been.
