Oldiesmann: Finally got the AmazonBot situation under control. I basically changed some server settings to tell AmazonBot that it's not allowed to access anything on the site. That should fix the speed issues we've been experiencing lately

Callie - I watched the Switched At Birth series finale yesterday, and thought it was well done.  Compared to the rest of the episodes from this season, it was by far the best. They did a reasonable job of wrapping up the various stories, except for Bay.  She was left alone to pursue her "career" as a tattoo artist. :idiot2: Oh well, it's a tough job, but somebody has to do it! LOL

Tome and Gloria de - I tuned into HGTV right after dinner, (before hockey), and saw the new version of Fixer Upper.  Chip and Johanna are following in the footsteps of most of the other shows on HGTV, and starting to do "house flipping".  I guess that's the style of show that viewers like best??  I preferred their old foremat, but I suppose they got tired of doing the same old thing for so many years.  Their older daughter, Ella, seemed uncomfortable, as Joanna's "assistant".

Sandy

I have just started watching season 1 of "24" on Amazon....

"In 24 hours -- Each hour a separate episode -- Counterterrorist agent Jack Bauer must stop a political crisis, while maintaining a balance with his family life."      It is going to be a long time watching 8 seasons ....  but I am looking forward to it.

The Light Between Oceans - I've been wanting to see this movie for a long time, so finally rented and watched it today.  I liked the book a lot, but I was disappointed in the movie.  It wasn't bad, it was just very slow and maudlin. Not a lot of dialogue, like in the book.  I thought the first hour dragged along too slowly.  Then it picked up and got much better, but still left much to be desired. They stuck with the story fairly well, except for a few things. Like any other movie made from a book - they have to leave out a lot, because of time constraints.

Junee - I'm wondering if you ever watched it, and if so, what you thought of it?  The lighthouse itself, and the surrounding ocean scenery was gorgeous.  The houses and clothing and people, all had the authentic look of the early 1920's. The actors were all excellent!  The movie was just a bit too hopeless and depressing, but of course the book was too.

Yes I did finally get the movie and you said it all.  Was disappointing after reading the book.
I never do know which to do first read or see.

JeanneP

I usually like the books better but the other day I watched the DVD on "Water for Elephants" Liked it better than the book.
Last night I watched. "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" on DVD. Preferred the Book. So good to have choice..
I am all out of DVDs and Books and so, even though rain coming I had better head over to the library.  Going to be a Cold Wet Weekend for us.

It's in between seasons on all my favorite shows, so I've been spending most of my time watching HGTV, with all their many house hunting or remodeling programs.  AJ is watching hockey every night, even though the San Jose Sharks, are no longer in the playoffs.

We did tune in to watch the first episode of a new series on STARZ, called American Gods, adapted from the book by Neil Gaiman.  A weird, fantasy style story, full of computer animation, ridiculous characters and evil circumstances.  After about 40 minutes, both of us had had enough, and we turned it off.  AJ was expecting to like it, because the star, Ian McShane, ("Deadwood"), is one of his favorites.  He was disappointed, and so was I . . . there was something creepy/crawly (disgusting!) about the whole show, which probably means it will be a hit!  ::)  ::)

Tomereader1

My TV Weekly magazine did something I had not seen it do before:  They posted a complete list of all the shows that are coming to their "Season Finales", and the dates the Finale airs.  Can you believe?  Give me some shows and I will send you the dates, okay?

Marilyne

Last night we watched the Oscar nominated movie, Sully, starring Tom Hanks.  I'm sure you all remember when Capt. Chesley Sullivan, made an incredible emergency landing on the Hudson River, in the middle of January?  The press called it, "The Miracle On The Hudson".

I wasn't enthusiastic about watching it, but AJ has been anxious to see it. He's been  a big admirer of Sully, ever since he pulled off that amazing landing, and wanted to know more, and to see how it was presented on screen.  It didn't take me long to get into the story, and start liking it!  It was a great movie, and very realistic.  Tom Hanks, was perfect as Sully, and the scenes of the crash and rescue were excellent.  I was glad I watched it, and would recommend it to one and all.

If you have HBO, it's now available for free, and is also
On Demand.

FlaJean

Marilyne, Sully was an excellent movie.  I agree Tom Hanks did a great job.  He also did a great job on Bridge of  Spies, another excellent movie.

Marilyne

FlaJean - I agree with you, Bridge of Spieswas another excellent movie.  Tom Hanks is such a versatile actor, and is especially good at playing real people, as in "Spies" and "Sully".  Another true story was, Captain Phillips, where he played the captain of the cargo ship that was taken over by pirates, off the coast of Africa.

CallieOK

Marilyne,  thank you so much for mentioning that the movie "Sully" was on HBO.  I don't see that schedule and keep forgetting to check and see what's being shown.
After reading your comment, I did a channel search and recorded it.  Watched it tonight and was fascinated!
Thanks again.

Marilyne

Callie - I'm glad you enjoyed "Sully", as much as FlaJean and I did.  It's a pleasure to see a good quality movie, about truly decent people.  I hope others who look into this discussion, will like it too.

JeanneP

Still in the 80s here but very windy. Trying to put the house in order but took a break. I just watched the movie. "A Man Called OVE" what a great on. I am still on the library list for the book. It can't beat the movie.  I don't care much for Subtitles. )This Swedish. But after 10 min. you don't even notice. Yes. you do get a few tears every so often.  Now back to the sweeper.

If you have HBO, there is a new show on tonight (Saturday) called The Wizard of Lies, starring Robert DeNiro and Michelle Pfeiffer.  it's about the rise and fall of Bernie Madoff, who pulled off the biggest Wall Street swindle of all time. Sounds like a fascinating story, of how he got away with it for years, and his wife and adult children knew nothing about what he was doing.  The review says that DeNiro is amazing as Madoff, and even looks like him.  Michelle Pfeiffer plays his unsuspecting wife.  I think it looks like its going to be an excellent drama, and I plan to watch it.

maryz

And HBO is free for a few days, too.  I have it set up to record.  Last year (I don't remember the network or service), there was a special called (I think) Madoff, starring Richard Dreyfus.  It was wonderful.  I hope this one is as good.
"When someone you love dies, you never quite get over it.  You just learn how to go on without them. But always keep them safely tucked in your heart."

FlaJean

Marilyne, that sounds interesting.  I'm going to look on the HBO schedule and see when it shows here.

Marilyne

I thought that the HBO drama, The Wizard of Lies, was television at its finest. The depiction of a true American tragedy, brought about by sheer greed on the part of Bernie Madoff.  After the show was over, I was so affected, that I went directly to the computer, and looked up web sites on Bernie, his two sons, and his wife, just so I could learn more.  I'm wondering how the rest of you liked the show?  Please give us some feedback?

FlaJean

Marilyne, I agree that it was television at its finest and it affected me also.  I think the part that touched me the most was when his son (during his cancer treatments) spoke to the college class.  I was left with the feeling that Bernie was sorry only because it all fell apart and easing his own conscience by blaming others for being greedy.

Marilyne

FlaJean - I'm glad you liked The Wizard of Lies, as much as I did.  We seem to be on the same wave length lately, as far as TV shows and movies are concerned! :)

A couple of nights ago, we watched the highly acclaimed and much nominated movie, La La Land.  It was good . . . very entertaining, with likable characters, no bad guys, and lots of nice music.  It's a pleasant and enjoyable movie all around.  Nothing negative to say about it, except for a few minor things that were done on purpose . . .  like the fact that it was a musical, yet the main characters couldn't dance or sing.  They were so sweet and sincere, that you really didn't care. A refreshing change of pace, compared to most of today's movies.

I haven't watched any of the new shows or continuing series on TV, as yet, but will soon be getting back to House of Cards, and all the others that I've followed that I've followed over the years. We did watch the first episode of the new, Twin Peaks, and laughed all the way through it.  :idiot2:  We couldn't figure if it was meant to be funny, or whether the preposterous events in the show were supposed to be taken seriously??  Either way, I doubt that we follow it.

Marilyne

Is anyone a fan of HGTV's Fixer Upper?  I am, and so is my husband. :)  An interesting article on line today, on how Chip and Joanna Gaines, have transformed the city of Waco, Texas, into a tourist attraction.  I'd love to be one of the Waco tourists!  Looks like such fun, if you enjoy the show as much as we do.  See the link below:

Marilyne

Well - looks like I'm the only fan of HGTV's Fixer Upper. :(

Moving right along . . . tonight we watched an old Alfred Hitchcock movie, titled Rope, from 1948.  It's the only Hitchcock movie that I had never seen, and as is true of all of his films - very well done, with lots of suspense.  I liked it.  James Stewart, Farley Granger and others.  It was more like watching a stage play.  The entire movie takes place in one room, with a cast of only seven actors.

Tomereader1

Hey Marilyne, I like FixerUpper!  In fact, of any of the "fixer" shows, that is the only one I will watch with any regularity.  I found it much too easy to get hooked on that type of show, as it is with cooking shows, for me.
I think I gain 10 lbs. everytime I watch a cooking/food show.  I like "The Best Thing I Ever Ate".

Marilyne

Hi Tome - Glad you are in agreement with me on Fixer Upper.  I thought the article on how Chip and Joanna had changed Waco, was fascinating.  I'd love to visit The Silo's, and also tour the city itself, but unfortunately, that won't be happening.

I don't cook much anymore, so I'm not familiar with any of the newer cooking shows. I used to love to watch any show that dealt with New Orleans style cooking.  Remember Emeril?? :D  I've never seen, The Best Thing I Ever Ate, but it sounds like fun to watch.

Tomereader1

Best Thing I Ever Ate, showcases the various cooking show hosts, visiting places where they've eaten something awsome/delicious.  They show some stuff I might not like to eat, but mostly it's stuff I would love to
have one serving of!  Various CHOCOLATE goodies, wild sandwiches, etc.  Yumm!  I'm getting hungry.

They say it takes standing in line for hours to get tickets to the Silos in Waco, TX.

Marilyne

I hope you're all looking forward to a busy or a relaxing 4th of July?  The days of picnics, beach parties or neighborhood gatherings, are long gone here.  It used to be my second favorite holiday, (Christmas being #1), but now it's just another summer day.

Not much TV viewing here lately.  Mostly we've been watching old movies on TCM, or HGTV shows.  Yesterday I started watching the final season of the HBO show, Girls. It aired in January of this year, but is available On Demand. (As are the first five seasons.) It's an unusual comedy/drama, written by, and starring, the controversial Lena Dunham.  I found the series to be a fascinating look at the young 20 something girls of today. Could it be that they really live outrageous lives like that in NYC? :o  Anyway, it's definitely not for everyone . . . lots of sex.

Lindancer

Marilyn, I am looking forward to watching the 4th. concerts. I like to watch feel good shows.  Nothing depressing, I guess that goes with my age of 93. I do not have anymore mudpie friends left.

I am looking forward also to see Sully.  I do not have any premium channels.  I would like to see La La Land, I use to like the old time musicals. I do watch HGTV programs.

With my morning coffee, I watch GMA.

I will watch some of the Independence Day concerts, but at 9:00 p.m., I will take a chair out onto my driveway and hopefully see some the cities' fireworks which will start shooting into the air.  I'm about a mile and a half up the hill from the high school football stadium where the fireworks will be launched.   When my youngest grandsons came to visit me for the month of June, we tried a few times to go to a parking lot near the stadium, but the view wasn't as good as here at home and the traffic getting down there and back was pretty heavy.

I just found the series "gIRLS".
which I had started to watch a few years ago..

So I am going to try to go to the end this time.
It is different but also very well written.   By the star
of the movie, Lena Dunham for which she received
two Golden Globes and six Emmy nominations. In 2010,
