Callie, for this movie, Redford and Fonda were NOT cosmetically enhanced, Redford his wrinkled self and Fonda with a long, semi-gray wig, and looking so much like her father, Henry Fonda, and not like her glamorous persona.  (I was glad they didn't try to make them look anything but what they were supposed to be...older folks). I think Radioman has the best review of the movie, and like me, enjoyed the book so much more.

Marilyne

Callie, Tome and Don - Thank you for your thoughtful reviews of Our Souls At Night.  I'm looking forward to watching it, but it will be a few days or weeks . . . not sure?  As I've mentioned before, both my Netflix & Amazon, have lost picture quality in the past couple of months. It's frustrating to watch anything on streaming, so I will continue to try to figure it out.  I would like to get the full effect of the movie, since I enjoyed the book so much.  I was also disappointed with the choice of Redford/Fonda, for the main characters, but I believe they are both excellent actors, so hope I will like them in this movie.

Callie - As you know, I'm also a huge fan of Haruf's trilogy - Plainsong, Eventide and Benediction.  Wonderful books for all ages.  I highly recommend all three!

CallieOK

Tome,  I agree - except for the many rear shots of their slim trim figures.   ;)  (I know:  picky , picky, picky!  ::) )

I liked the movie very much and thought it emphasized the relationship between the two older people very very well.
Marilyne,  I think you'll like it a lot!

I watched it on my Tablet because my t.v. won't do Closed Captioning on Netflix (don't know why).   I had a lot of trouble seeing the night scenes and realized after the fact that I should have lightened my screen.
So, this morning,  I did that and rewatched the scenes I'd had trouble seeing.
Enjoyed it just as much the 2nd time as I did the first time.

I would judge it to be one of those movies we like to go back and watch again, at least once...if not to see what we had missed...then to get more into their characters.
I thought Fonda was a "hoot" ;D when she asked him to "sleep with her" and he looked like someone had hit him with a brick!!!  His lack of response ??? was priceless!  Don't want to give away too much here!

CallieOK

His reactions to several things were hilarious!  Good acting!!

Tomereader1

Marilyne, are you all okay where the wildfires are burning?

Marilyne

Tome - Fortunately, we aren't in the fire area this time, but lots of my relatives live in and around Santa Rosa, which was hard hit.  They are all safe, with no damage to their homes.  It's hard to breathe outside, with all the smoke and ash in the air, so I stayed in the house most of the day.  Thanks for your concern! :)

NitaH

I'm an avid PBS fan too.  I don't have cable, but get about 10 channels through the air , PBS being one. Also streaming with the Roku. What I miss at regular scheduled times I catch later.

I would never go back to cable.  I have Amazon Prime, so have their channel. My grandson lets  me use his Netflix. Roku gives me access to more news channels than I'll ever watch. P!us all of the old movie channels.

Sort of overkill for someone like me who is very particular about what I watch. Unless it's a nature show. :)

Tomereader1

Marilyne, I'm so glad you all are safe and out-of-the-woods (so to speak!)  And the same for your relatives.  I get so concerned when my S&F and Sr. Learn peeps are in areas suffering floods, hurricanes, wildfires, tornadoes, etc.  God Bless us Every One!

Got that new TV yet?  Was Netflix able to address the problem you are having with their broadcasts?

Marilyne

I've seen two excellent movies this week:
The first one was, A Dog's Purpose.  I had never heard of it, and it sounded sad to me, and I wasn't in any frame of mind to watch a sad animal movie. My daughter had seen it and was crazy about it, and badgered me until I finally watched it. I was so glad that I did!!  Any of you who have ever owned a dog, will really love this film!  Yes, there were some sad parts, but overall it was inspirational and uplifting.
The theme or premise of the story is, "A dog looks to discover his purpose in life over the course of several lifetimes and owners."
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1753383/?ref_=nv_sr_1

The second movie I watched today, and have seen before, and I love it.  It's one of those films that nobody saw, when it was released in 2000, and I have still yet to find anyone, except for myself, who has ever seen it?  You Can Count on Me, starring Laura Linney, Mark Ruffalo and Matthew Broderick.  It has everything ... drama, humor, wonderful characters, and a great story.  I think you will all like this movie. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0203230/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_44

Both movies are playing On Demand. You Can Count On Me, was free, on my Comcast.  I paid $4.99 for A Dogs Purpose, because it's a new film. (2016) It was worth every penny! I'm sure it will be free before long.

FlaJean

Marilyne, I made a note of those movies.  I’m not really a movie person and mostly enjoy the old movies occasionally.  But my husband enjoys a good movie but has seen all all the good ones several times.  ;). He’ll probably look for them on iTunes.

Marilyne

Jean - Not sure if your husband will like either of those?  I watched them when AJ was busy working on the car or away for a few hours, so I don't know what his reaction would be?  The two main characters in You Can Count on Me, are a brother and sister - both adults.   A Dog's Purpose, follows the same dog through four different lives and families. It's not real sad or sentimental or overly sweet.  It made me think about the possibility of former lives/future lives, etc.  Not something I do or I don't believe in, but it's a comforting thought! :)

I watch very little television so I was pleased that there was an incentive to watch when I noted  PBS was showing the old musical, "She Love Me"..I did manage to view it with its wonderful cast, music,  costumes and no commercials or interruptions...I just  thought I would pass on the information that it still can be viewed until November 3...In case you  want to watch a thoroughly wonderful program,  here is the address..For some reason,  PBS has blocked all TV's outside the USA.
http://www.pbs.org/wnet/gperf/loves-full-episode/7510/
Prepare for a very entertaining  show..For added information,  this musical was taken from an old black and white film "The Shop Around The Corner" starring James Steward and Margaret Sullavan

Marilyne

Chia - Good to see you posting here. :) Thanks for the information on the musical, She Loves Me.  I didn't realize that it's now playing on PBS, but will definitely take a look.  Both my husband I love musicals, so it will be a pleasant evening for us.

I haven't been watching much TV in the past few weeks, so I have to start catching up on new and old programming.  Tonight will be DWTS.  I'm lukewarm on this season, but will stick with it, to see who comes out the winner. (Easy to predict at this point in the season.)

I think I'm the only one on this discussion who watches the long running series, Ray Donavan?  Last night was the season finale, and I would sure like to know what others thought about the ending?  I'll probably find answers and opinions on line?  It was a surrealistic and sad finale.  Although not announced as such, I think maybe it was the end of the series?

Bubble.  You are really into Halloween now.  Loving all the graphics. Wish we had the ghost ones of all the people still in S and F.   Bet you grandson wishing they had Halloween there.  Just let him dress up. You can do it also. Start a new trend is Israel.

Marilyne, I plan to watch DWTS, I really do not have a favorite this year. I know none of the them. EXcept, the one from GHTV. Other wise I listen to the radio, until I go to bed, then I put the TV on and also read. I am enjoying Hallmark right now.

I wanted to do much more, but could not find good photos of all :( With photos from everyone I could do a great graphic for Christmas. Is that a loud enough hint?   ;)

That would be good. Each hanging on a branch of a tree. I envy all you that are good with graphics.
I will have to go back and see. Did I see Don as a ghost. You already have last years Santa picture.

Marilyne

JeanneP - I was starting to get worried about you.  Thought maybe you had gone to Texas for a visit? Good to see you back.

Lindancer

Marilyne, I was not happy with the ending of DWTS ended last night, and you could see the judges were not also.  Only my thought, but I do think the wrong people went home.

Gloria - AJ wanted to watch a hockey game last night, so I recorded DWTS.  I'm going to watch it this afternoon after lunch.  I'll let you know what I think.

Marilyne

Gloria de - I just watched DWTS, and I didn't like the ending at all!  I don't think they've ever done that before??  It looked to me like it was decided ahead of time, because I noticed that the judges gave those couples the lowest scores, and I thought they were just as good as all the others?

I thought the group dance to, Phantom of the Opera, was really good.  They must have put in many hours of practice to be so perfect!

Marilyne, I am not a happy camper with that show right now.  I also did not see the couples onGMA to day.  I agree with you that grouple dance was fantastic .  I could watch it again.

Marilyne

Gloria de - Sorry to see Terrell and Cheryl go last night on DWTS.  I'm surprised that Drew Scott has lasted this long, but I know that The Property Brothers, is a very popular show.  That's one HGTV show that I never watch.  It's not on at the times that I'm watching, so I don't know much about it.  One of the brothers did the Rose Parade commentary last New Years Day, and I thought he was very good.  I don't know if that was Drew or Jonathan?

I'm guessing that Victoria and Lindsay will be the finalists??  They usually don't have two women, so it might be one of those two, and Drew Scott?  Anyway, I'm not happy with this season, for a number of reasons.

This post is not about TV, but movies; well, A movie.  Anyone here remember an old movie with Clifton Webb (now that's a name out of our pasts!) where he was like a
"nanny" and treated all his chores with militaristic precision (can't stop thinking about how he did steps on how to take a shower!  I guess I could go look this up on ImDb, but I want to stir up memories here for a bit!

Tomereader1

Oh I looked it up anyway (my bad)  it was one of the Mr Belvedere films- - "Sitting Pretty" made in 1948.

Marilyne

Tome - I remember Clifton Webb, and the Mr. Belvedere series of movies . . . but when I try to visualize Clifton Webb, I see Jonathan Harris, who played Dr. Smith, on Lost in Space!   I'll have to check out pictures of them both, and see if they are look-a-likes?

maryz

Clifton Webb also played the villain on the great movie, Laura.
"When someone you love dies, you never quite get over it.  You just learn how to go on without them. But always keep them safely tucked in your heart."

Marilyne

maryz - Thank you . . . now I'm seeing the difference in the two actors.  Clifton Webb was wonderful in "Laura", and was in a couple of other film noir movies as well.  Jonathan Harris, was mostly a TV actor, and did a variety of roles besides Dr. Smith.
