One of his best is “The Man Who Never Was.  I watched that again in the last several months on Netflix.

Marilyne, you know that old saying "the older I get the behinder, I get" Well that is me, but forgive me as I am in a couple of months, I will be 94.  I did watch DWTS this week, I too, thought Drew would have gone long ago, and I like him, he and his brother seem like nice people.  People mag. had a nice write up on him, a while back.  DWTS is also a popularity contest. Over the years some good dancers have gone off, because of it. It is the only new show I still watch.Cozi, TVOne and the HallMark TV is what I watch mostly. If I am not listening to the radio.  Remember radio.

I remember Radio and think that I enjoyed listening to some of the old soap opera's back then than I do now. Always like the mysteries when just had to listen.  Its for sure that the music was better. Unless I play my own tapes the rest on radio not worth listening. Can't understand the words at all and so loud.

I used to have the radio on all day, and most of the night, until just a couple of years ago. Then all the local stations in San Jose and San Francisco, were bought by big nationwide companies, and the old shows that I liked with local hosts, were cancelled.  Now there is really nothing of interest to listen to anymore, except for music.  I especially miss the night time talk programs.  They were great for poor sleepers, like me, who find it hard to wind down at night, and "turn off" the cares of the day. They gave me something to concentrate on, and helped me to relax.  Lots of good music stations on all night, but it's not the same as live voices.

FlaJean

Marilyne, talk radio at night reminded me of “Sleepless in Seattle” when Jonah called into the talk-radio program to find his dad a new wife.  Then Sam gets on the phone and talks about his feelings.  Do they still have those talk-radio programs that are not political?  We used to listen to them when we were driving at night taking our daughter back to college.  Years ago!

Marilyne

Jean - Yes, the kind of radio programming I liked at night, was more like "Sleepless in Seattle".  A wide variety of subjects, and no politics.  Local shows, as well as cross country.  There was one that was nationwide, called "Night Owls", that I really enjoyed.  People would call in from across the US, as well as Canada, and talk about all sorts of things.  That was at least 30 years ago, and of course is no longer on.  There was another that came later, but can't remember what the show was called?  it was hosted by Art Bell, from a radio station in Nevada.  It was mostly about conspiracy theories, and extra-terrestrials! LOL  People would call in with all sorts of crazy stuff, like how they were kidnapped by aliens in a space ship, etc. :yikes:  It was totally bizarre, but fun to listen to.

Lindancer

Marilyne, Would you believe I use to listen to the station that talked about all the people that were here from outer space. I also enjoyed the other talk shows, not political ones.  the station  I listen too, all night sometimes is WLNG, from Sag harbor,NY  I listen to Sat.Night Hop. which still plays my music and a lot of their other shows. Some of the announcers have been on for 30 or 40 years. It is also all local news.

I listen to a local PBS radio station from breakfast time through supper.  Then I turn on the TV for the local and PBS evening news.  I've been upset the past 2 Sundays as my Spectrum TV has muddled up the PBS Sunday evening programs and now I'm 2 weeks behind on Poldark!

We've been watching mostly old movies on TCM, or the free ones on our premium channels.  I record lots of them, so if there is nothing of interest on any of the channels, we pick a movie. Last night we watched The Racket, starring Robert Mitchum, Robert Ryan and a whole lot of good character actors that show up in most of the old movies from the 40's and 50's.  The Racket was your typical good cop, (Mitchum) going up against bad racket boss, (Ryan).  The most fun to watch, was William Conrad, as a good/bad detective.  Remember him?  A short heavy set man, who played both the villain, and the cop, in lots of films and long running TV shows.  He was The Fat Man, on that old radio drama, who stepped on the scale, at the beginning of each episode.

Marilyn, I was so disappointed with DWTS, as the couple I wanted to win were sent home Victoria and Val.  But she still proved that she could dance when they thought she would never walk again. They even called her parents on the floor, which I thought was nice.

Marilyne

Gloria - I agree about Victoria and Val.  I thought she was very good and graceful, in spite of her handicap.  I think Lindsey will be the winner.  Definitely not Drew!  I like him, but he isn't the best dancer.

Marilyne

No hockey game tonight, so I hope to find a movie to watch that we will both enjoy.  Nothing good playing on TCM, but I do have one recorded that we might watch . . . Calling Northside, 777, with James Stewart.  I've never seen a movie of his that I didn't like, so this is probably a good one.

CallieOK

I was also sorry to see Victoria and Val leave DWTS.   I think Jordan will win.

I'm recording my Sunday night shows because there's a "casual concert" at my church.  "Poldark" and "The Collection" episodes are both Season Finales. Guess there won't be any new series until "next year".
Don't mean to sound like a Grinch,  but I do get a little weary of Christmas programming for 6-8 weeks.

Radioman34

One of my favourite shows from the 60s was the Twilight Zone; as a matter of fact I still watch it today in black and white. So you can imagine my delight to read that this programme is being brought back to life, possibly mid-2018.  I hope I'm not disappointed.

Tomereader1

Was everyone pleased with the DWTS  "send home" last night.  It was the first time I had watched the show this season.  I was impressed with Drew, but all four couples were "awesome".  The routines were excellent too.  I don't much care for all the group dancing in the background that they are using this season (maybe last season too, I didn't watch).  Did anyone spot "Jenna" in one group, she was previously on So You Think You Can Dance.  She was one of my favorite performers, both as contestant and as an "All-Star" on SYTYCD.

Marilyne

Tome - I like Drew better than I used to, when I only knew him from "The Property Brothers".  He seems like a really nice guy, and I hated to see him eliminated. I hope the winner will be Lindsay.  My daughter and granddaughter are here for the week, and are big fans of DWTS, so we will all be watching tonight.

Lindancer

Tome, the strobe  light they are using I do not like. My favorite was sent home last week. Drew got so far I was hope he would be here for to night. Now I am for the violin player.

I must be the only one who thinks Jordan will win.  It will be close!!

Marilyne

Callie - you were correct!  Jordan won, and Lindsay was runner up.  They were both very good.  We didn't watch the whole show last night. I don't care for the holiday shows, when they have pop singers, dancers, et al, that have nothing to do with the show or with the season.

Back in the "olden days", I used to like to watch the various television Christmas specials, every year. The Andy Williams Christmas Show, was my favorite, and also, the Bob Hope Christmas Special.  Sonny and Cher also had one, and I think Carol Burnett?  Times have changed, and variety shows are long gone.

maryc

Good morning and Happy Thanksgiving everyone!   I noticed that the movie The Christmas Train will be on Hallmark this Saturday Nov.25.    I enjoyed the book and hope the movie will be as good.  ;)   I'm not a follower of  David Baldacci but did like this book and also another he wrote called Wish You Well.

We now have a new "Smart" TV, so I'll be able to catch up again to lots of my favorite programs on Netflix and Amazon.  I'll be looking forward to the second season of the British drama, The Crown.  I thought the actress who played Queen Elizabeth was wonderful, as was the actor who did such great job as  Prince Phillip.  John Lithgow, deserves all those awards for his portrayal of Winston Churchill.

I am also anxious to watch Our Souls At Night.  I loved the book by Kent Haruf, and although I was disappointed in the casting of the main characters, I am curious to see how it turned out.  I have heard very little about it from anyone?  It's been a while since it's been mentioned in here, so bring  me up to date on what any of you thought about this show?

CallieOK

Marilyne,  I highly recommend "Our Souls At Night".  I had also read the book by Kent Haruf and agree that the casting did not fit my idea of a couple living "out in the boonies" of northeastern Colorado.
However, Jane Fonda and Robert Redford each portrayed their characters very very well.

The only disagreements I had were RR looking more like a "slicked up city dude" than the guys he met for coffee - and with the gown JF is wearing when they go dancing at the hotel in Denver.  I cannot imagine her character having an outfit like that - or even buying one after she got to The City.

Oh well,  I suppose "they" had to show off JF's slim trim figure "at her age" and RR probably wouldn't look like a "good ole country boy" if they did hide his hairdo under a dirty baseball cap and not "light" him well.   ::)

Marilyne

Callie and maryc - This afternoon, I watched The Christmas Train, recorded from the Hallmark channel. The color was gorgeous, on my new TV set! I thought the movie was better than most that I've watched on Hallmark.  I might get the book at the library, and see if I like it.  I'm not fond of David Baldacci, but have read a few of his novels over the years that I liked.

Callie - Tonight I hope to start watching Our Souls at Night.  Thanks for the great review!  I've read a few comments on line, mostly about how the makeup department had a hard time trying to make JF look 70 years old! ha ha  She's had a ton of cosmetic surgery over the years, which she readily admits to.   In reality, she will turn 80 this month. (born December 1937)

Speaking of aging actresses.. . I received an email today, from the DDAF - Doris Day Animal Foundation.  It was about a fundraiser, to be held in Carmel, in March, 2018.  The March date will be Doris Day's 96th birthday!  It will also be the 50th anniversary of her last movie, With Six You Get Eggroll, which they will be shown at the event.  It didn't say whether Doris herself will be there?  I have heard that she shows up at most of the fundraisers for her foundation, so she will likely put in an appearance if she is able to.

Callie and Marilyne,   I'm smiling at the conversation about Our Souls at Night.  I thought that JF really "turned out" quite glamorous for her evening in the city.  I suppose I'm pretty back country but couldn't imagine such a drastic change of wardrobe.  That would be one of those dresses that you wear once then hang it in the closet forever, me thinks!   The other thing that had me thinking was why she didn't warm him up with a few dinner invites before she popped the big question....at least get on a first name basis.   :)

Marilyn, When you are looking at David Baldacci's books take a peak at one called Wish You Well.  I think you might like that one.  I did and it is not his usual style.

Back on October 5th posts, three of us members, talked about "Our Souls At NIght"
Don had the very best review!  Among Don's other talents (music, acting & Santa)
he has an excellent writing style!  He should write a book, about all the things he's done in his life (hear that, Don?)

Marilyne

Our Souls At Night:  I watched it, and liked it a lot!  Both RR and JF did a good job with the characters, I thought.   They stayed with the story reasonably well, but did skip over a few details that I thought were important. However, screen writers always have to pare down a story, to make a movie fit into a specific time frame.

I thought RR looked his age, which I think is about 82?  His face and eyes definitely show his age.   I think that in the book they were both  supposed to be 70 or 72 - don’t remember exactly?  Jane looked like a young 70, but as I mentioned yesterday, she will actually be turning 80 the end of this month.   Her long, thick, wavy hair was lovely, but was pretty unrealistic I thought . . . and with all of her cosmetic surgery, she must have also had something done to her upper arms?  None of that hanging flab, that most of us contend with!     I noticed that she was in sleeveless blouses a lot, to show off those arms!

mary - I agree that her proposal to RR, would have been more real, if she had come over and invited him to dinner first!  Then, tell him what she had in mind!  They seemed to not know each other at all. When he answered the door, he called her Mrs. Moore!  The men at the morning breakfast, looked very typical of what you see at coffee shops everywhere in small or medium size towns.  My dad used to meet a bunch of “regulars”, every morning at the coffee shop near him.

Tome - Thanks for referring me back to the messages in early October.  I remember reading them, but had forgotten what everyone had to say.

I plan to get the book at the library, and read it again.  I think the ending was changed somewhat?  Her son was just as hateful in the movie as he was in the book!  However, the movie hhelped to explain why he was so bitter.

I'm curious as to whether the movie made any money for Netflix or the producers?   I remember that there was just a little promotion before it opened on Netflix, and then nothing more was said about it?  I'll have to look at some reviews online?  Seems to me it would be of little interest to any viewers under age 65?  I can't imagine any of my three adult children watching it - much less my grandchildren!

Marilyne

We started watching The Crown, Season 2, a couple of night’s ago.  I think it’s excellent, and AJ is enjoying it too.  So far we’ve only seen two episodes, but they were both very good. Those British actors are so good!   Is anyone else watching it?

Other than that, I haven’t seen much to comment on, except for the usual HGTV shows.  Some good, and others not so good.  At last, they are showing some new episode of House Hunters, Fixer Upper, a and others. It's getting so that we can't tell whether we've watched a show already or not?  They are all beginning to look the same.  All buyers want exactly the same things! ::)

AJ has mostly been watching Hockey.  The Sharks are starting to do a little better.  It's still early in the season, so here's hoping it will be a good season for them?  Last night was family night at the Sharks game, and our son, dil, and two grands were there.  We looked for them when the camera panned the arena a couple of times, but didn't see them . . . had to be satisfied with a Facebook photo that they posted.

FlaJean

Marilyne, we watched the first two episodes last night of The Crown.  I agree it is excellent.  Will probably watch another one or two episodes today.  There is so little that I really enjoy on TV that we will watch it gradually and not binge watch like so many people do.
