Callie, I have not watched to much of the Olympics. I think I like the indoor the best,  I don't feel so cold :)
I am watching Victoria, what night is P?K her Majesty serv.? Sounds like one I would enjoy.

CallieOK

Gloria, PK...Her Majesty's Service is broadcast on my PBS station on Saturday night at 8:00 (CDT) and rebroadcast on Sunday night at 10:00 p.m. (CDT).  There are four episodes in the series.  The second one was about Windsor Castle and was broadcast here last weekend.

Marilyne

Callie & Gloria - I haven't seen "Her Majesty's Service" yet, but plan to watch it after the Olympics are over.  It will be waiting for me, On Demand, along with the new season of the series, "Homeland". Other than those two, I'm not missing much regular programming. Its refreshing, every two years, to take a break from my usual TV shows and movies, and step into the world of the Olympic Games.  I’m enjoying it a lot this year, because I was getting bored with the HGTV shows that I watch, and have recently finished most of the continuing series that I follow.

Last night we watched Shaun White, win his Gold Medal in snowboard, after a twelve year break from competition.  Almost immediately, a woman came forward and accused him of sexual harassment in the past, so that may force him to give up his Gold Medal?  I didn’t hear the details, so don’t know how long ago this occurred, or how credible it sounded?

Then we watched the Women's Luge, and saw USA competitor, Emily Sweeney, suffer a horrendous crash in her final run. It looked bad, but apparently she was okay after a trip to the hospital.  We ended the evening by watching the Pairs Figure Skating short program.  Interesting to see the couple from North Korea. They were very good I thought, but ended in 11th position. The winners of the pairs short program were #1, China: #2, Russia: #3, Canada (not sure?)

Tomereader1

#1 Germany; #2 China; #3 Canada.
Germany had the highest point count ever.

Tome- Too many men skaters last night!  I think they should have had an earlier elimination, and only shown the skaters from the last group.  We wanted to see Nathan Chen, but got too restless and tired of waiting, an recorded the rest. (Can you tell that I'm an impatient person? ha ha)  Then we watched the Skeleton, and the women's downhill skiing.  Came back to skating later and saw Chen's disastrous performance. I felt so bad for him, coming in 17th, when he was predicted to get the Gold Medal. I think the media hypes the favorite athletes way too much. The same thing happened to Michaela Shriffrin of the USA.  They've been talking non-stop all week about how she was slated to win all the skiing events that she entered.  It didn't happen. :(

Marilyne

Almost finished with Olympic Figure Skating! Ice Dancing, my favorite skating event ended last night, with the Canadian couple winning the Gold.  France won silver, and the USA's brother and sister team, won Bronze.  It was a pleasure to watch all the couples who performed, and to me, they all looked like winners.  I favor the ice dancing over all other figure skating events, because it does not involve any “jumps”.  Today starts the Women’s Individual Skate, which is the most popular with viewers.

I used to love watching the women, but now I almost dread it.  Reason being that both the individual men and women’s events has changed over the years, and have morphed into . . . which skater can do the best and highest jumps.  The doubles, triples and quads, is what it’s all about now.  I don’t like to see them jump, because about half or three quarters of the skaters fall at least once, and often fall many times. I find it an unpleasant viewing experience now.  I'm all tensed up, just waiting for the triple or quad, and the inevitable fall.

Not sure,  but we may opt out of the Women's individual, and watch the other events instead.  I do like the fast moving speed skating, and the short track.  The Luge, Skeleton and Bobsled are thrilling and fun.  I’m getting tired of all the downhill skiing, but I do like it - in small doses.  Curling is interesting to watch, but seems to be shown at odd hours here.  We have learned to record the events we like, especially if there are two playing at the same time.  Oh yes, my husband loves Hockey, so he has been watching lots of the games.  I will take a look, but don’t have the patience for watching a complete game.  I hope that others here are also enjoying the Winter Olympics?

Marilyne, I agree with you about the skating.  The ice dancing is also my favorite.  I also get very tense with all the jumps in the figure skating.  I prefer the Peggy Fleming style.  I had forgotten that the 1961 skating team had gotten killed in an airplane crash.  Peggy Fleming’s coach was killed in that crash.  The crash was in Belgium.  The team was on its way to Prague.  Peggy Fleming was just 12 when this happened.

Just curious if anyone has seen the movie “I, Tonya”.

I used to be glued to TV during Olympics, but somehow I haven’t kept up with the Olympics as much this time.  I can’t seem to get on their schedule.

Good afternoon
Marilyn, I also like the ice dancing, and my husband would have been watching all the hockey. Last night I watch the rescued dog show, it was different, but I did enjoy it.

Jean, I had front row seats in the old Madison Sq. Gardens many years ago to see Sonia Henie (spel) ice skate.

Click for Riverhead, NY Forecast

FlaJean

Gloria, that must have been a real treat.  I’ve seen a few of her old movies.

Marilyne

Gloria de - My favorite Sonja Henie movie, is Sun Valley Serenade, from l941.  It plays on TCM a couple of times a year, and is really worth watching.  It's a comedy, with some great music from that era.  Besides being a champion ice skater, Sonja, is a very good comedienne!  Others in the cast, are John Payne, Joan Davis, Milton Berle (long before his TV show!) and Glenn Miller and his Orchestra.  Some classic Glenn Miller hits are played . . . At Last, Moonlight Serenade, In the Mood, and a cute number called The Kiss Polka.  The best one, is Dorothy Dandridge and the Nicholas brothers, dancing and singing to Chattanooga Choo Choo.

FlaJean - My daughter saw the movie, I, Tonya, and she liked it.  I don't think it was a big box office draw. She said there were only a few people in the theater when she went.  It will probably be available soon, On Demand.

RAMMEL

Just a reminder, assuming it has been mentioned before.

There are loads of free Movies and Vid stuff available from Amazon if you have Amazon Prime. The newer vintage TV sets with "Smart TV" can get this stuff directly (I believe from an internet router wit WiFi capability). It also can play Youtube directly.

Thanks Marilyn, for telling me about that movie, I will watch for it.

Gloria & Tome - Will you be joining me for the Academy Awards on Sunday night ?? :) I think you two are the only ones who watch every year, besides me?  I still remain faithful to the show, even though I have rarely seen any of the movies that have been nominated.  It's still fun to see all of the celebrities, and watch the short clips of all the top movies.  I hope to watch one nominated movie On Demand, before the show.  Not sure what's available, but I'm willing to pay $5.00 to see something really good for a change.

We started watching the new season of Homeland, the past couple of days.  I think this is Season #7, but not sure? We've seen two episodes, and so far I'm a little disappointed.  The main character, Claire Danes, works as a CIA agent, here and in the Middle East.  The past couple of seasons have taken place in the USA and looks like this one will be here also. I preferred the ones that took place in the Middle East.

Tomereader1

Marilyne, you know I will be treading the red carpet for the show!  See ya' there!

Lindancer

Marilyne, yes I do plan to watch, although I know few of the actors anymore.  I have not seen any of the movies, but do enjoy the red carpet. did I tell you I watched on TV a couple of weeks ago The Russians are Coming. Some parts of it I laugh out loud. after all the news, I need something light

Click for Riverhead, NY Forecast

Marilyne

Gloria & Tome - The Academy Awards show starts at 5:00 PM, here in California.  I plan to look at some of the Red Carpet talk earlier, but at five, I will start recording the show, while we watch the news for an hour.  Then I'll be able to scroll through the commercials.  It helps to do that, so the show runs smoothly, with not so many interruptions.  We also did that for the Olympics, and it made for pleasant viewing.

Callie -  Now that I'm thinking back over the years, I remember that you were also an Oscar Awards watcher??  I hope you'll be joining us this year, and that maybe you have seen at least one of the nominated movies?

CallieOK

Marilyne,  haven't seen any of the movies but plan to watch the "main show" and the Red Carpet part....if I remember.

My PBS station has begun several weeks of "fund-raising" programs.  There are a few "premiers" scattered here and there.  "The Young Hyacinth" is one of them - about the early life of that character in "Keeping Up Appearances".   It's being broadcast at 11:30 p.m. (of all times!!!!) so I have the recorder set.

Off to polish my tiara and press my gown.   See you at the "theatah"    :party2:

Marilyne

Callie - I finally saw one of the AA nominated movies! Last night we watched Dunkirk.  It was not my choice, but hubby is a WWII buff, and has been anxious to see it.  He was very disappointed, and I was very confused! ???  It was the oddest war movie I have ever seen.  I can't believe that it has been nominated for Best Picture.  No chance it will get the Oscar, IMO.  Maybe will win for cinematography, but that's as close as it will come.

Next movie choice is mine, and it will probably be Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, starring Francis McDormand.  She's a great actress, and I love to watch her in anything.

Marilyne

Last night we watched, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.  I knew it would be good, but it was even better than I expected.  Lots of award worthy acting!  Frances McDormand should win Best Actress, and two of the nominees for supporting actor are very deserving as well.  Either Woody Harrelson or Sam Rockwell will likely get that award.

I’m looking forward to the AA show, especially now that I've seen two movies, and have a few actors to root for . . . or not, in the case of Dunkirk.

Chia

Marilyne I am a bit late in my comment, but just wanted to put my 2 cents in about the Academy Award Program..I am another who watch it every year without seeing too many of the pictures nominated..I did not see any of the pictures that were up for awards this year, but I was aware of all that was written about those pictures and their casts ..Ever since I saw Frances McDormand in Fargo, I have been a fan of hers. And when  watching more movies, she played a variety of roles..which I suppose a real actor is supposed to be able to do.
But I stayed up to the bitter end.
I give the producers of the show credit for wanting to make this current program  entertaining  in as little time as possible..I personally think they did with the selection of  Jimmy Kimmel as Master of Ceremonies..not an easy task... but...all in all, I thought it made the mark compared to other years....and I noted that not one critic agreed with me...Such is Life...

Lindancer

Marilyn and Chia, I am surprise there are not more comments about the Academy Awards

Again, I am surprise to see not as many people watching this year. I for one in general thought it was smoothly run show, better them some years.  Of course this is my thoughts.  I thought most of the dresses were very nice, some I wondered how they set down in them some  slinky and others had so much material and one had a large bow or fold, that seem to be in her face. But still they were lovely and not over sexy I also thought Jimmy  Kimmel, did very well, as it was a rough year to make comments.

Chia & Gloria - I always watch, and enjoy the Academy Awards every year.  Some years are better than others, and I do think this year was one of the better ones.  The show doesn't seem as long for me, as it does for the two of you, because it starts earlier here.   Because it is live, it starts here in California, at 5:00 o'clock, so this year it was over before 9:00.  You folks on the East coast started at 8:00, so it was almost midnight by the time it was over

This year, for a change, I had actually seen three of the nominated films, so that made it even more interesting for me.  My favorite movie won for Best Actress - Five Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.  I really like Frances McDormand, and she was so deserving. I also liked Jimmy Kimmel, and thought he did a good job.  The women's dresses were beautiful I thought - not as revealing, as in past years.

There are very few members here in S&F, who watch any of the awards shows. That's been the case, all the way back to Senior Net.  I also watch the Emmy Awards every year, and the Golden Globes.  I don't care much for the Grammy Awards, because I don't like today's popular music.  However, I do watch every year anyway, because my son and his wife attend the show.  Her brother is one of the producers of the Grammy's, so they get tickets every year.  I always look for them when the camera pans the audience, but I've never seen them.

A movie is  shown every night downstairs in the large Activities room.  Tonight will
be Keys of the Kingdom. I would to see it  again(it is an old one)but I cannot cope
with the UNCOMFORTABLE chairs in there.

Hi Joyous:  Joy, my advice is take a cushion to sit on!  Just joking--and I hope you are feeling well.  I've missed you in Bosom Buddies!

Joy, be sure to tell your management and/or activities director that the chairs are uncomfortable.  Maybe they can bring in some others, or at least think about replacing them at some point.

Half hour documentary produced for the BBC in 1992 that has proven to be very popular from its first broadcast, and continues to attract interest from across the world in 2018...Margaret Gallagher from Belcoo, Co Fermanagh, N. Ireland, enjoys her rural lifestyle, living without modern amenities...

And I bet she is one of the healthiest people around, as in lifestyle - location.... in health, mind and spirit...She has a much healthier glow than her UK based sister...

Marilyne

Jackie - thanks for posting the documentary about Margaret Gallagher's life in Northern
Ireland.  It caught my interest, and I watched it through to the end.  Unfortunately, I had a hard time with the Irish accent, and missed a lot of the things she said.  I would like to see it on a TV screen, with closed captioning, so I could understand everything better.  At the end, it shows the picture of a young man, and Margaret saying that she hoped he would return, and live out his life there.  Was he her son?  If so, I wonder why she left that part out of the telling of her life history?

FlaJean

Jackie, I really enjoyed that documentary.  I could understand most of what Margaret said.  For not having a school education, she is certainly an intelligent woman.  Her sister moved to England to earn a living and help the family.  Margaret said there were times when her sister’s income in England kept the family going.

Marilyne, that young man is her sister’s son.  Apparently her sister, husband and son live in England but hope to retire in Northern Ireland close to her sister, but she said she wants a modern house and has become used to modern ways of doing things.  Margaret is leaving the house to her nephew (Kieran?) and hopes he will take care of it even if he doesn’t live there, and she believes he will.  Margaret hopes she can live out her life in that house.

JeanneP

Jackie.  Really enjoyed watching that Video. I loved visiting Ireland. What a spot to own a cottage in.  Doubt I could stand that much peace and quiet for all the time but would for when in the mood to be alone. Use to see areas like that . We have them in UK also. That one has really been taken care of . It must be on the Tourist to see list.  Now I would need a few more modern conveniences . Can get by not seeing people but not going to get water. Wonder what it is like in the winter months.
