Thank you Jeanne P-FlaJean and Marilyne for taking the time to watch the half hour footage...

Just went back and watched the 2nd part of that video. Must be 20 years later. She looks pretty healthy yet. Think some modernization has been done. Camera sort of picked up a modern cook stove and car. Now I think I would be O.K.living there. LOng as I could head into town.  I remember my grandmothers Cottage. It has water but no Electric or gas. had flag floors like that . It was still there last time I went by 8 years ago. Had to be from the late 1700s. Funny how my house was close to it. all family lived where could see each others homes but all had been knocked down and a new Estate built there. Didn't like seeing that. They had put all modern conveniences into the Old cottages in the area so now they sell for so much money.

Vanilla Jackie, were you the person who recommended this video?  It is gorgeous and what a beautiful story!  I have visited Ireland 4 times--my maternal ancestors came to America from Ireland in the early 1700's.  My mother's maiden name was Carney--once when my husband and I were at a race track in Ireland, some Irish gentlemen approached us--said "Say, are ye yanks!  and What brought you to Ireland?"  My husband replied that my mother was a Carney--and one said "Oh, me mither-in-law was a Carney (Kearney--in their language)!  We had a nice chat and enjoyed the races, too.

It was outside, very chilly, and was the kind where the horses were inside a railing and racing across the turf.  We had stopped in Dublin prior to reaching the racing area some miles away.  I'd looked at lovely large brimmed ladies hats which cost $200 pounds!  At the races there were many young ladies dressed in lovely spring dresses (no wraps of any kind despite the cold) with brand new beautiful hats!  I'll never forget our day at the races!

Jeanne, if it weren't for my children here, I'd love to spend 3 months every year in Ireland.  People are so friendly and welcoming there.

Sue...
...yes it was me, :) I borrowed it from a posting member of my UK site...
Strange to hear of your Irish day at the races...for most of my working career was cashiering and taking bets on the horses...Do you remember the famous hat lady...Gertrude Shilling, she wore outstanding hats to the Royal Ascot Races...

I have been glued to the tv for the last couple of hours...The Commonwealth Day Service...all the Royals attended apart from Prince Philip who has now retired from duty...I of course got up from my sofa and stood to attention as they played our National Anthem, ( yes even I could do that with my MS ) but he who shall remain nameless sat down all through it stuffing his face with his mid- day snack...even if he hadn't been eating he still would have stayed seated... ::)

Sue. Ireland is one of my favourite places also. I am sorry now that I didn't just buy a small cottage years ago in the Lake District area . North of Uk. I would be spending half my years there now. I love the small villages up there. Maybe will try and get over again this year. I just can't stand Airline travel anymore. Not like it was. Messing with luggage now would be the thing. I will never pack as much as in the past. Half of thing never get worn.
JeanneP

SCFSue

Jeanne, one thing I've learned from traveling is how to survive with only one carry-on bag.  I used to wear one pair of dark slacks and put another in the bag, plus undies, and about 5 washable tops.  Also added a lightweight rain jacket and a folding umbrella and a second pair of shoes in case my shoes got wet.  Not need to wait for checked luggage and had laundry packets which would take care of undies in a bathroom sink!  My carry-on-bag could be stowed overhead in the airplane if I turned it sideways and that left room for other people's bags.  I also carried a large "better back bag" which had room for a change of undies, my meds, and cosmetic bag.  Plus a bottle of water.  Very easy way to travel!

I'd like to go back to Ireland to spend 2 or 3 months there in the summer, plus visit other places nearby like Wales where I've never visited--but my sons won't agree to me traveling alone.  My youngest son's wife called me yesterday and is coming up here from New Orleans on the 30th.  We're going up to Birmingham for the weekend with her oldest son who is a junior this year at Birmingham Southern University (on full scholarship!--His younger brother is on scholarship at LSU as a freshman).  That's probably as far as I'll get as far as travel goes this year.

Sue.  I think I would be better now with my packing. I always took so much because  I dressed up a lot when over.Shoes were my worst things as I use to think to have a purse and shoes to each outfit.  Never wore slacks until the last few trips. Now for last 2 trip people over there have gotten like in the US. Pants. Jeans, Tops all very casual. Now don't bother with the places where can't go into if not wearing right dress and men suits. Was fine when got there as always stayed with parent, family and no problem with luggage other than me in the US Airports. I think I left Jeans and warm jackets and sweaters at my cousins house last time over. So packing next time will be light .
Now Wales border is within  a hour drive from my area. I went in often. Love the place.  My youngest daughter has gone back with me last 2 trips. She wanted to see Wales and all the Castles. then we took 2 of my grandsons with us time before it. Spent a lot of time down in London then. They liked up North better though.
Granddaughter Just this past summer took her 9 year old son and he loved London. Didn't want to leave. they never got up North. Now she is going to take the 6 year old twins over.  Her Husband there about once a month as his company owned by British. She ties it into when he is over there. Now I will no longer go over to Europe. Glad I got to see most of it before all changed. I don't ever go down to London anymore. We just take the train down for the day. fact don't visit the big cities.
I went by ship 4 times in early  years. "Cunard"

' and get things from them all the time. I am tempted now to do it that way. Prices not that much higher than Airfare. I don't want to even think of going Coach air anymore. Business class worth the extra dollars. Will see how the year goes.

I can't seem to drum up any interest in the many (too many!) series shows that are on Netflix, Amazon and the Premium channels like HBO and Showtime.    Last month we finished the second season of The Man in the High Castle, and are looking forward to season #3.  We are also anticipating the return of Game of Thrones, which is supposed to be in April? The only show we are watching right now on a weekly basis, is Homeland, starring Claire Danes and Mandy Patinkin.  Other than that, most of my TV viewing lately has been the HGTV home shows.

I did see a wonderful movie a couple of days ago, that I would like to recommend to everyone . . . especially those who have daughters!  It's called Lady Bird, and was nominated for lots of Academy Awards.  It won the Golden Globe award for Best Picture, I think.  Anyway, it's a worthwhile film, and an enjoyable way to spend two hours.  I think you will all like it as much as I did.  The actress who plays the title roll, is the same one who was the star of the movie Brooklyn, that a lot of us saw last year and liked.

Tomereader1

I haven't watched "Homeland" since season Two.  This year, I understand, it has quite "gone off the rails".  Tried to watch the first episode, but neither hubby or I could get into it, or figure it out.    I'm watching on TNT, "The Alienist".  It was an award-winning book by Caleb Carr, and I've checked out the book to see if the movie treatment is sticking to the story...It Is!  It is rather gory(both book and TV) the TV series has wonderful ensemble cast, so I'm enjoying it.  Several new Netflix series coming up soon.  Hope I can get thru all the ones I am semi-bingeing on!

FlaJean

Marilyne, I’m glad you mentioned “Lady Bird”.  Sounds like a movie Larry and I would both enjoy.  iTunes has it for rent.

To day I am back from almost a week stay, in the hospital, so I did not get to see many shows that I like, as the TV is very limited to what you can see. Had another heart attack Sat. feeling better.

Funny,  I am watching "Homeland"
on Showtime,  and I am liking it better
then before!

Also I am watching "The Looming Tower" on
Hulu ...

(Tracing the rising threat of Osama bin Laden and Al-Qaeda, it takes a controversial look at how the rivalry between the CIA and FBI inadvertently might have set the stage for the tragedy of 9/11 and the war in Iraq. ")

With all that is going on in  our Government
these days  (I will not elaborate),  as this is
not the place for that,  I am
finding both of these shows very interesting,
compelling and a bit frightening but I
can't stop  watching them.

Gloria de - Sorry you had a heart attack, but great to see that you are okay, and back home again!   Your nephew Keith, is such a nice young man. He kept us informed every day, on how you were doing.

Sandy -  I'm really liking this season of  "Homeland" - better than the last one.  I have high hopes for Kerry and Dante!  "The Looming Tower" sounds good.  I'm not sure if I get Hulu, but will check again.  I wanted to see "A Handmaid's Tale", playing on Hulu, but could never figure out how to get it?

FlaJean - I hope you like "Lady Bird", as much as I did.  AJ went to a Sharks hockey game that night, so he didn't see it.  I'm curious as to whether Larry will like it or not?

Sandy

If you have not already signed up for hulu,  you
can get a free weeks trial to see how you like it...
and during that free week get the whole first
season of A Handmaids Tale.

I like that we can sign up for channels
like showtime, cinemax, hbo,  hulu etc  and
can see them one month at a time and cancel
when we want to ...   I am on Roku so I often
sign up for them via Roku.   Where I control
what special stations that I want to watch,
whenever I want to watch them.

Hulu is a great station that I stay on.

Once I finish watching  "The Looming Tower" ,  I
am going to have to watch it again....  each time
finding out more and more about the "story"
behind it.     My memory is giving me fits
ever since I suffered a number of strokes 5
years ago....  so it behooves me to re watch
stories that  contain a lot of information...

(Oh woe is me)..  any how,  at least I have the
time now to re watch whatever I want,
as many times as I want to.   :idiot2:

I need to find something on my TV to enjoy. Seems to be bad this last few months. Even some of the new shows not worth watching.
Now I have never looking into such as HULU. I have Comcast but not all it offers.  How does HULU work. How to sign up?
JeanneP

Tomereader1

I think go to Hulu.com and it will let you sign up.  You get a few days/weeks free, and then it's $7.95 a month (I think-don't have my bill handy)

Marilyne

Tome and Sandy - Thanks for the information on Hulu.  I think I'll wait a bit before signing in for my free trial.  I already know that I'm going to like it, so would probably want to subscribe! ::) Not a good idea, since I already pay enough, for my Comcast Premium channels, plus Netflix and Amazon.  I still have plenty to watch and catch up with on all channels, so don't really need more at this time.

Over the weekend we watched Mudbound, a movie that was nominated for a number of Academy Awards.  It was excellent, with superb acting by everyone in the cast.  However, it was an extremely depressing and hopeless story.  It takes place in Mississippi, in the 1940's.  Shocking scenes of racial prejudice, with a horrific Ku Klux Klan scene, that will stay with me for a long, long time.

Marilyne

Last night we started watching a new Netflix series called, Seven Seconds.. It's about a police coverup, following the accidental death of a black teenage boy.  It certainly held my interest, and the acting was excellent, but I'm not sure whether I will stick with it or not?  I'm getting burnt out on sad, hopeless drama's.  I tried watching the Netflix series, Narcos, but after one episode, I was done!  Takes place in Colombia, with drugs being brought into the US, abuse of women, sociopathic men, even animal abuse. It was extremely depressing.  Not sure about "Seven Seconds", but I'll probably watch another episode and see how it goes.

My dil, recommended another Netflix show called Sneaky Pete?  I haven't looked it up yet, so I don't know what it's about?  Seems like with all the hundreds of shows and series on TV to choose from, I should be able to find something that I really like?  I did enjoy all of the Oscar nominated movies that I watched - especially Lady Bird, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.  As I mentioned before, I didn't care much for Get Out!, but it was entertaining in a weird sort of way. :o The only nominated movie I haven't seen yet is, The Shape of Water.

JeanneP

I just saw "The Face of Water" A strange film.Would not have wanted to have paid the $8.00 to see it. It keeps your interest for the hour and 45 minutes but at the end still wonder what is was about. Yet it won awards. Maybe just me. You see it and let us know. As a actress the women was good.....
JeanneP

The Shape of Water. Can't wait to see it.  I think its already out on DVD.

I watched Jesus Christ, Superstar last night and was surprised that I rather liked it even though the rock style is 'way past my era.  Not sure about the casting of Alice Cooper as Herod but thought it was interesting.  The man who played Judas was especially good in that part.  I thought the costumes for the Jewish elders were a little strange.  To me it looked like something out of "The  Matrix" movie.  Did anyone else here watch?
phyllis

Marilyne

Hi Phyllis - YES, I watched Jesus Christ Super Star!  I had mixed feelings about the presentation, but overall, it was very entertaining, and I liked it.  The screaming and yelling from the audience was a little distracting, and I had a hard time with the dialogue.  We turned the closed captions on, which helped, but they were a couple of beats behind the action - speaking or singing.

I agree that the man who played Judas, was excellent. I like John Legend, and thought he was good in the title role.  Both my husband and I thought Alice Cooper stole the show, with that ragtime version of his song.  Whether we like him or not, he does have a lot of charisma!

I had forgotten that Andrew Lloyd Webber was only 21, when he wrote "Jesus Christ Superstar".  I'll have to look him up and see how old he is now?

FlaJean

Larry and I watched “Easter Parade” with Fred Astaire and Judy Garland on Turner Classic Movies.  I didn’t realize “Jesus Christ Super Star” was on or I would have watched it.  I’ve never seen it, but sure would like to.

JeanneP

Now I have been to see "Jesus Christ Superstar" in the Theatre 4 times. Have the Original on record and dvd. Have most of the Lloyd Webber shows. (He Was 70 years old in March). Along with not liking that way and the commercials that ran every 15 minutes I just could not sit and watch it. Notice that the main player was wearing modern Tennis shoes along with A sweat shirt type jacket on. Surprises me that Lloyd Webber did it. I thing it was Live and just for American TV. I saw the same type of thing done to another favourite of mine that I have again seen 5 times and got the original Opera. that was "Carmen" done in English. Had to leave that.
They need to leave all these good Theatre shows the way originally done. Not be Jazzing them up for TV.
JeanneP

Tomereader1

I think that "they" are jazzing up the musicals and opera in order to reach a wider, and younger, audience.  I saw JC,S live, back when it was "new"  (what? 45 yrs ago?)  The cast wore clothing that was, for the most part, as people were dressing then, so this presentation was not something all that new.  I DVR'd it, since it was 3 hours, and now I can go back and watch, fastforwarding thru the commercials.

Lindancer

Marilyne, I watched the last half, just hard for me to get use to the setting was Bensonhurst, Brooklyn (saw that in the review) It was hard to get use to the modern dress.   It is hard for this 94 old brain to except some things.  The reviews were very good in the morning paper.  you don't   see many live shows.  Alice Cooper is not a young rock star, like he use to be.  He seem well received.  I had read they were going to use the audience for the sound of the crowds.

Jeanne, I also saw JCS a couple of time with my son. The first time was on Broadway, then the next was Gateway, summer theater, they also did and excellent performance, beautiful customs and of course Jesus look like paintings we see of him Most of the opera Ilike, just not the screaming part. Of course they are playing for a different generation.    Of course, this is all my own opinion.

Click for Riverhead, NY Forecast

JeanneP

Yes, it is sad that now they say they have to do what the young people want to listen to and see.  So sad that they will never listen to the music, Songs. See the type of shows we did years ago. Hear the big bands play are recognize the words they are singing. No romantic words anymore. I sure don't know how young couples get romantic to the music I hear them listening to.  Even TV shows so different. Nothing to cheer people up.  At least we still get some things from such as "Masterpiece theatre" once in awhile. And can still enjoy a book. That is something that I don't see most of my young people reading. But we can see find something we enjoy.
JeanneP

phyllis

Weber wrote JCS to adapt an age old story to modern times and we were in the rock era when he wrote it.  I think it is a production that can always make a nice transition to each modern age and taste but still tells the same timeless story of the last days of Jesus on earth.

I found the audience noise distracting, too, but understand they wanted to use it as part of the crowd scenes.  I was very impressed with the staging of the Crucifixion.  The studio where the production took place must be enormous.
