I like “This Old House” on PBS.  I just don’t care for HGTV anymore.  They show the same stuff hour after hour and they are pretty much scripted.  We have Apple TV (similar to Roku) and have recently subscribed to Acorn (6.99 a month) and have found a lot of programs that we like that were once on regular TV.  Neither of us are binge watchers so just watch one or two a day.  And, anyway, all the stories we have watched are concluded in about 44 minutes (no commercials always a bonus).

Lindancer

Jean and Marilyne I use to watch house Hunters regularly but as you say it is the same thing.  When we bought our first house in 1957, cost $12.000 and was a fixer upper, The kitchen sold us, cheerful 5 window, old fashion sink and store.. The first
christmas, I was upstairs washing dishes in the bathroom. My husband did all the work. by the way we had a coal furnace, which I never could keep going.  So the kitchen and new oil burner was the first things we did. The kitchen was 18X18, 30 years later we were still happy with our counter and kitchen.  I had so many happy memories in that house, It was old when we bought it seaweed was in the walls for insulation. It was on 3 acres my son got married in the orchard.

Jackie, I Had heard of CornationSt.  I have watched General Hospital for 55 years, and as you say, they try to have up to the minute thymes which some people want. I watch to relax.  If I want upsetting new I can read the paper

Jean, I meant to say my husband and I use to watch This Old House.  My son was a big fan of I think his first name was Norm, forgot his last, who use to be on theshow. A lot of the show was done in Mass, years ago and Mark lived on Cape Cod

Gloria de - Where was your first house located?  I've never heard of seaweed used for insulation, but I can imagine that it would work very well.  We used to watch the original This Old House, many years ago.  I didn't realize it was still on.

We get a kick out of House Hunters, and the way they follow the same pattern on every show.  Husband wants a Ranch style house, and wife wants a Craftsman.  So they see three different houses, but in the end, they always agree on the same house. We know it wouldn't be that easy in real life!  ha ha!

Lindancer

Marilyne Often wonder how many of those marriages lasted when they could not agree on anything

Marilyne, I forgot to say, our house was in Southampton,NY the property had a huge barn, corncrib and a one room house when we bought it. We maedthat into a building my husband use to pour all the molds, when I went into teaching ceramics.  Sorry you just ask one question and I gave you a story

Not much TV or movie talk happening in here??  I've been sidelined by the hockey finals, but now that the Sharks are no longer contenders, I'll be watching a lot more TV.

The only program of note that we've watched in the past couple of weeks is, The Pacific, a WWII series that is available on Netflix.  There are 10 episodes, and that's it.  I know that most of you don't like War stories, but as I've grown older I've become a real fan of any movie or TV show that takes place during those years and right after.

As I said before in this discussion, (or maybe it was another one here in S&F?), I feel like our generation is the last one, who was alive during the War years, and who remember what it was like from the Homefront.  My dad served in the Navy during the war, so lots of the events on the remote islands in The Pacific, have real meaning to me.  I was school age during The War, so old enough to remember a lot.  This particular series was produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, so it's high quality and well documented.

Tomereader1

As far as TV goes, I have an affinity for British/UK series.  Their actors look and seem like "real" people; downplay of the "glamour" ladies, except in supporting roles, and the men, with a few exceptions ("Grantchester), are real. I know that very few of you here care for deep, dark, nowhere near "cozy" mysteries.  PBS/Masterpiece Mystery have run several episodes of "The Unforgotten" it is a Police Procedural/Mystery whose leading character reminds me a good deal of Mirren's 'Jane Tennison'.  Thorough, doggedly persistent but not without empathy.
She was in a British series that ran on Netflix ("River") which was also a detective/mystery, really quirky though!  If The Unforgotten comes on again, or with episodes, those of you who like that type thing, be sure and catch it.  Each "case" is about 2 or 3 episodes, that last one was over Sunday.  Don't know if there are to be more.  My husband likes it so much, he asks me on Monday, when's that "detective program" going to be on?

Tomereader1

P.S.  I sometimes think that, other than Marilyne and myself, nobody watches TV and cares to talk about it anymore!

Marilyne

Tome - I wonder if River is still available on Netflix?  I'll take a look, and if it's still there, we will very likely check it out.  We mostly watch shows on Netflix, Amazon, or the Premium Channels like HBO and Showtime.   We also watch a lot of movies, and have seen all of the Oscar winners, except for The Shape of Water, which I hope to watch soon.   Did you ever see Mudbound?  Free movie on either Netflix or Amazon.  I thought it was great.

I do think that there are a few who post here, who are fond of all of the PBs shows.  I don't follow them like I used to, but I did take a look at Little Women, this past Sunday.  It was mentioned in the Library Bookshelf folder today, and I'm in agreement with what Callie and maryc, had to say . . . disappointing! It's a story that didn't need to be remade yet again!  I loved the 1949 version with June Allyson, Elizabeth Taylor and Margaret O'Brien, which is still fun to watch when it plays on TCM.

As for the network TV shows - Roseanne, is the only one that we're still following.  I can't explain why, but I get a kick out of Roseanne Barr!  Laurie Metcalf, the gal who plays her sister, is great, as well as John Goodwin, and the two daughters.

Yes, we do still "veg out" on the HGTV shows such as House Hunters, Lakefront Bargain Hunt, Fixer Upper - etc., etc, etc!!  They are staged, of course, but fun to sit and laugh or criticize some of those couples who are choosing between three houses!  Why do they NEVER pick the house I like best?? :D

CallieOK

I'm not watching much on t.v. or Netflix.
I guess I'm burned out on themes of police, lawyers, politicians (Madam Secretary, Designated Survivor), competitions (The Voice, American Idol, DWTS),  HGTV and the like.

The current DWTS series has only lasted 4 weeks - with 3 couples being eliminated each time. Finals are next week.  I haven't watched the entire show every week but have usually caught the last 30 minutes or so.  However, it's becoming the "same old same old", too.

I/we enjoyed the long-ago 30 minute sit-coms but I just haven't gotten "into" the current ones.

I have never rented a movie although there are 3 On Demand that I might watch....some time.

Maybe I need an attitude adjustment.    :crazy2:

Lindancer

Callie, I think I am through with DWTS, last night just seem to rushed, and I could care less, who wins.  I guess I will be watching the wedding.  I like HGTV.   Lately I just enjoy light movies, with happy endings.  I can watch the new if I want something serous.  Of course I still watch Murder She Wrote and Diagnosis Murder. Know the by hart.  I just saw The Russian are coming a couple of months ago, and I think that is one of the funniest and feel good movies I have seen.  Very old. I guess at 94  what  ever makes me happy :)

Yes, I did watch Mudbound.  Very well done.  But also, depressing.  I'll check Netflix for you to see about "River".  I DVR'd Little Women.  I haven't watched ANY of DWTS, no one "star" appealed to me, maybe Mirai, but she's gone now.  I have the DVD of
"The Shape of Water"..was gonna watch with my daughter on Mother's day, but she wanted something silly and happy, so we watchedHallmark Channel.
Callie, I just love Madam Secretary, and also, Designated Survivor (which has kind of gone off the rails in MHO). Was good in the beginning.  I'm not into the "reality shows".  I'd like the Voice if the singers were mostly singers and not screamers!

CallieOK

Lindancer,  I completely agree about "whatever makes you (us) happy"!!

Tomereader,  On Sunday nights.  I usually start with "Call The Midwife" (now watching "Little Women"), then Hallmark for "The Good Witch" (I like some syrupy  ;)) and ending with "Madam Secretary".  Sometimes, I watch "Masterpiece Theater" and record "The Good Witch" but haven't been too interested in MT recently.

One show I've watched every week this Spring is PBS' "Live At Lincoln Center" on Friday nights.  It's a series of what I call "recitals" by various Broadway performers who may have leading or supporting roles in shows but don't do big tours, etc.

I saw a commercial for "Game Night" starting pretty soon but I don't remember what night and can't recall what channel.   "Family Feud" and "$10,000 Pyramid" are two of the shows and I think there were one or two others mentioned (maybe the one with Alec Baldwin?).   I really enjoyed "....Pyramid" the last time it was on but didn't care for the mc on "....Feud" and thought the other one (whose title I will remember as soon as I leave the computer  :P) was stupid.

I'm usually outside until "dark-thirty" in the summer  (between 8:30 and 9:00 p.m. around here) and am then ready to take a shower and read an e-book.

I've never watched daytime t.v. so can't comment on any of those shows.

Marilyne

Tome - I guess we were wrong.  Everybody still watches TV, but just forgot to let us know! ;D

I didn't even take a look at DWTS this season.  I just couldn't generate any enthusiasm for the "stars", and even the pro dancers weren't the usual ones that I recognize.  They say that every TV show runs its course, and I think DWTS has come to the end of the course!  They hit their peak about 4 or 5 years ago, and it's been a steady decline since then.

There are still some old favorites that refuse to die, like Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, and Family Feud, but maybe they have survived because they're games, and not comedies, dramas or reality shows?

Gloria de - Like you, I always get a laugh from The Russians are Coming,  no matter how many times I see.  Another one that I still get a kick out of is, It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.  Both cycle through TCM a couple of times a year.

Callie - Live at Lincoln Center, sounds like a show that both AJ and I will enjoy.  We love Broadway,  or movie musicals.

Tome - Tonight I looked up River on Netflix, and realized that we watched it a couple of years ago, and liked it a lot! (I thought that title sounded familiar!)  I remember recommending it in this discussion.

I am still watching TV, Marilyne, in the evenings, but hardly ever watch mainstream TV.  I spend a lot of time cruising Netflix, On Demand, Amazon Prime, and a couple of premium channels (Starz and HBO).

I just finished watching a short series (on Netflix) based on a book by William Golding, To The Ends of the Earth, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and several very good British actors.  It was good in spite of the fact that I always think Cumberbatch is over-acting.  But, I felt he over-acted as Sherlock, too, and still I always enjoy watching him.   ;)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/To_the_Ends_of_the_Earth_(TV_series)

"River" is still on but somehow I was turned off by the idea of his "ghost" partner.  I'll have to try it again....perhaps I've changed my attitude.

Cumberbatch is now starring in a D-R-A-A-A-M-A on Showtime, titled "Patrick Melrose" about a man who was obviously abused and traumatized by his father (upperclass, pretentious BORE). The young man is now a drug addict, headed for the rock bottom all addicts eventually hit.  Talk about an actor "chewing the scenery"! But I guess what else would you expect?  I don't know if I could handle a second episode of this.

Tomereader1

Phyliss, yes "River" was somewhat strange, but kept my attention and interest.  The "ghost partner" is the lady who stars in "The Unforgotten" which I mentioned. A great role, and she gives it 110%.
"Live At Lincoln Center" is a terrific one hour musical programme, featuring Broadway Musical stars.  You might have heard their names, or not, but they are talented.  They sing in that "hear them in the back row of the balcony" style, which is sometimes grating on the ear.  (think Ethel Merman)!  We've watched three so far, and because it is so "different" from what usually airs, it is very enjoyable.  Each singer has their small band on stage with them, with a panoramic view of a bit of nighttime New York, thru the glass window.

I'm still a "Jeopardy" nut, and as we get two episodes each evening (one from the previous year) then one (I guess it's live) current.  I even like the "old" Password with Allen Ludden!  Weren't those prize amounts a "hoot"?
Once the announcement comes out about who will be a "star" on DWTS, I decide right then whether I will watch it, or not.  Lately, mostly Not.  It should have ended about year 10.  It's well past its prime now.

CallieOK

I agree about DWTS having "run its course".

Tomereader, thank you for the wonderful description of the Live at Lincoln Center programs.  I couldn't come up with the words.
Did you see the one in which the singer's husband sang a few numbers with her - and was the actor who plays a supporting role on "Madam Secretary"?   I didn't catch his name in the credits of either show.

Since I seem to be having a few "Intellectual Interludes" with detailed facts this morning - I'd better concentrate on Domestic Duties.  TTYL

Marilyne

Phyllis - so good to have you back with us!  Give River, another chance.  At first I was reluctant, but it quickly grows on you, and you come to really care about River, and his chaotic life.  I thought the concept of his "partner", was very well done.
I don't know if you had a personal connection to WWII, but whether you did or not, The Pacific, is an excellent drama, and based on a true story, written by one of the survivors.  Another series that I liked a lot, is The Man in the High Castle.  It's playing on Amazon.
Also, a movie on Netflix -  Mudbound.  It was nominated for a number of awards, in all categories, but I don't think it was a winner? I will definitely take a look at To the Ends of the Earth

Tome - I read about Patrick Melrose, and decided to pass on that one. I don't care for stories dealing with drugs or drug addicts.  I agree, that Cumberbach is an excellent actor, but does tend to "chew the scenery".  The Cumberbach series that Phyllis recommended, sounds good.  I'll take a look at it tonight.

Tomereader1

Yes, Callie, I saw the one with the singer's husband and their very sweet duet.  I immediately recognized him from Madame Secretary.  About "Madam Secretary"; I think that show is absolutely tremendous.  The acting ensemble makes me remember the awesome "West Wing" series (which I have the full set on DVD).  I think Secy. of State rivals the perils of the POTUS in some ways.  Wouldn't want that job either.  I'm so proud of Tea Leone, who does such a great job; and who knew she could really give some depth to a role.  You know, some actors/actresses
(yes I still use that outdated, non-PC word) can surprise you when a role comes along that really gives them an opportunity to utilize their acting talents.

CallieOK

Tomereader,  completely agree with your opinion of "Madam Secretary".  I like the way her family is worked into the story, too.

Lindancer

Callie, I am going to check out Live at Lincoln Center. The last time I was there was many years ago with my son to see the Nut Cracker.  He bought me the angel  for the top of my tree, that I will never part with.

Lindancer,  Live At Lincoln Center is broadcast on my PBS station on Friday night at 8:00 CDT.   The performances are in a small theater - more like a recital than a concert.  So far, it's always been a soloist accompanied by a combo - not an orchestra..  I'm enjoying the programs very much.
My granddaughter has gone to The Nutcracker at Lincoln Center every year since she moved to NYC - sometimes by herself if she can't find anyone to go with her.

SCFSue

I'm also a fan of Live at Lincoln Center.  It's broadcast here on PBS on Friday nights at 9:00 p.m.  It's a great way to end an evening!

I contribute to the local PBS station so get a monthly "magazine" with articles about the programs and a schedule for the month ahead.
"Live At Lincoln Center" is not scheduled for the rest of May.  No indication if there will be re-runs or a new season.
This week is something on the royal wedding and there's an opera something-or-other listed for next week.

I already have my recorder set for the 3:30 a.m. beginning of The Royal Wedding on Saturday.  I am not a morning person so the whole thing may be over before I get around to watching anything.  However, I'll be able to fast-forward through the "speechifying" by commentators.

FlaJean

Since we subscribed to Acorn, we have been looking at all the British shows.  I especially like “ Vera”, a detective that is short, plump and takes no guffâ€"refreshing for a change.  We use the sub-titles so we don’t miss anything.  😁

Marilyne

Callie - My older daughter is a "Royal Watcher", and plans to stay up all night to watch the wedding!  I'm not that anxious . . .  but I will definitely record it to view at a later time.  I'm amazed at the sideshow going on, with Meghan Markle's father!  What a jerk!  She must be embarrassed, but appears to be unruffled over the whole fiasco.  I wonder who will give her away?

I saw an ABC website on my news page today that was titled,  Meghan Markle: Six reasons why she divides people â€" even Americans.  Interesting reading, as I didn't know most of this information.

I was in junior high school when the present Queen Elizabeth was married.  I stayed up all night listening to the radio with the coverage of the wedding.  I can't remember the month/date of the wedding, but I think it was during the summer.

Sue

Marilyne

Sue - I also remember the wedding of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, and also the Coronation of Queen E, around 1953 I think?  I hope that you watched the Amazon series, The Crown? Very well done and authentic, with excellent actors.
I also watched the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana, and then Prince William and Catherine. (Now titled Dutchess of Cambridge, I think?)  I do plan to record the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and will watch it tomorrow.
