I stop watching old movies when I can quote the script.   :D

There are 3 movies available "for rent" on my cable right now that I'd like to see but I can't seem to manage watching an entire movie without falling asleep.
Age?  Oh, surely not!!!   :2funny:

Lindancer

Dave, is and old movie use to be free, now they want  $4 to rent  When I went to watch it.???? I enjoyed the clean humor in it.  One scene was a little risque, if you moved your eye :2funny:

Gloria - I also like the movie Dave, starring Kevin Kline. He is one of my favorite actors. He's been in so many wonderful films over the years, both comedies and dramas.
A Fish Called Wanda, is a hilarious comedy.  Sophies Choice is a drama, and he was fabulous in that one.  Others that I liked a lot, are Grand Canyon, which is also a drama, but with lots of comedy as well. He was also in two musicals, where he sang.  One was The Pirates of Penzance, and the other one was De-Lovely, which is the life of Cole Porter. He played Cole, and sang a lot of those classic songs.  I thought it was wonderful, but not many people have ever seen it.  If you get a chance to see it, I think you'll like it, and also "Grand Canyon".

Lindancer

Thanks Marilyne, I will lookfor Grand Canyon

Marilyne, "DeLovely" is in my DVD collection (but I bet you knew that!)  I just love "Dave".  "A Fish Called Wanda" makes me laugh till tears come.  "Sophie's Choice" was such a wonderful book, and the movie was excellent too.  Grand Canyon,  I can take it or leave it.  He was also in a comedy called "In and Out", which was also a lot of fun!  He gave an excellent performance in "the Big Chill".

Marilyne

Tome - Looks we're both Kevin Kline fans!  I also have the DVD of "De-Lovely", and the CD as well.  I used to listen to the CD a lot, but unfortunately I no longer own a player that works, so can't play any of my soundtrack CD's. :(

I wish you would take another look at "Grand Canyon"?  An extremely thought provoking movie, IMO.  In hopes that it will encourage you, I'm sending you this excellent review by Roger Ebert!

Tomereader1

Okay, I am encouraged, Marilyne.  I will see if I can find it on Netflix or Hulu, and give it a close watching.  I liked Ebert's review.  Always liked Ebert's take on movies.

You should be able to play the CD on your computer, or your DVD player.

Marilyne

Tome - Tonight we'll be watching the final episode of The Last Post!  I hate to see it end, but so glad that you recommended it.  For any of you who have Amazon, this show is high quality TV viewing!  We'll probably take a look at The Heat of the Sun, sometime over the weekend.

Unfortunately I can't listen to CD's on this computer.  I could on my old iMac, but not on this new one.   The DVD player is in the living room, which is a long way off from anywhere that I would be wanting to listen.  I especially like listening to CD's here at the computer or when I go to bed at night.  I'll have to check, and see if they even sell CD players anymore?

FlaJean

Marilyne, you can buy an Apple CD/DVD attachment for your Apple computer.  When we bought a MacBook Pro laptop last year we bought the CD/DVD attachment.

Marilyne, my movie buff bestie has recommended another movie, which I watched last night.  Title:  "Leonie", a Japanese made film (in English however) starring Emily Mortimer, who is excellent in the role.  She plays the mother of half-Japanese artist and sculptor, Isamu Noguchi.  I had never heard of him, but obviously he was very popular and important in the art/sculpture world in the 30's/40's.  (I intend to Google him later on today)  At the end of the movie, they show several of his sculpture pieces (though not very close-up or clearly) and he also designed buildings.  Good, good movie, more of a chick flick, but perhaps AJ will enjoy it too.

Marilyne

Tome - Last night we watched the final episode of The Last Post, and I want to thank you for recommending it.  Excellent viewing!  I will save Leonie, for watching in the future, as I have a few others in my line-up to see first.  Unusual, to actually have a good choice of movies or series to watch for a change.  The show that started immediately after "Last Post", looked good, and we almost started watching, but decided to wait until tonight.  I can't recall the name of it right now, but it stars Benedict Cumberbach. (sp?)

FlaJean - I think you and Larry will really like The Last Post.  I remember that you lived in Morocco, in the 1960's, so you would be able to relate to the British Army families, stationed in Yemen, in 1965.  An excellent series we thought.

Thanks for the tip on the Apple CD attachment for my computer.  I'm planning to order some things from Amazon today, so I'll see if they have it, and what the cost would be.

Marilyne

Hi Tome - Are you referring to the massive wildfires?  If so, never fear.  All is well in my foothill community . . . at the moment anyway. I live a few blocks from downtown, with plenty of pavement and sidewalks, etc.  However, there are also lots of eucalyptus and tall pine trees, both of which are known to catch a spark if a fire is close and the wind is right. Look for an email from me.

SCFSue

Marilyne, I'm glad to hear you are OK and hope you stay that way.  Those fires look voracious and there is so much destruction in California.  I pray that the fires will be extinguished soon.

Marilyne I am also glad to see you posting.  Did someone say fire and water. This past year fire and water has done a lot of harm t us.

Last night we watched the old movie The Searchers, starring John Wayne. I know that most of you have seen it in the past, but if not, it's a good Western story about two men who spend five years searching for their niece/sister, who was captured by Indians. The time Fram is the late 1860's, after the Civil War.  It's very good, but it's not my favorite John Wayne movie.  I guess my fav would be True Grit, followed by They Were Expendable.

Our DVR is almost full, mostly with movies . . . so we plan to either watch or delete them over the next week or so.  Mostly they're old favorites from the past, but a few new ones on there as well.

FlaJean

Coming Friday, August 10th on Netflix.. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.  I read the book and liked it but I think the movie is going to be even better.  From the trailer it looks interesting.  It is set in 1940s.

CallieOK

FlaJean, thanks for the "heads up".  I liked the book, too - and will be SO glad to have something on Netflix that I think I'll actually enjoy watching.  Haven't seen anything there that sounded interesting in a long time.

Marilyne

Jean - I'm also looking forward to watching The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, on Netflix.  The book was very good, and I think it will make an enjoyable movie.

Callie - Like you, I'm disappointed in the selection of shows on Netflix, in recent months. I think we have too many programs to choose from now on too many different networks and channels, and only a very few of them seem to interest me. We also have the Premium Channels like HBO, Showtime, Starz, etc., and now Netflix, Amazon and Hulu.  It's overwhelming when I slowly scroll through the hundreds of available shows, and see nothing listed that I want to watch.

Some of the series shows that I liked this past year were, The Crown, The Pacific, The Man in the High Castle, and The Last Post.  Of the movies available on Netflix, I enjoyed Our Souls at Night, Mudbound, and a couple of the Jack Black movies, for a little humor.  I haven't yet seen, A Handmaids Tale, but I do plan to watch it.

Today I watched a documentary about Penn Station in NYC.  Held my attention for the whole thing.

It was streamed from Amazon.  I have a Sharp Smart Tv which allows viewing from several sources and Amazon is one (with a Prime account).  I think you can do it to your computer also. Do a search for - penn station -. One of the "hits" should be  "The Rise And Fall Of Penn Station".   Select it and enjoy.

This might be a link to it on the computer -

Rammel, that reminds me that years ago I went on a tour of Grand Central Station, when Jackie Kennedy.  wanted to restore it. After that we went to the Waldorf for High Tea  Those were my fun days :)

Rick & Gloria - There is also a fascinating documentary about Grand Central Station, that used to play on, The History Channel, a long time ago.  It was so good, that I watched it a number of times.  They had photos of the early years of the building of Grand Central, and what it looked like when it was in it's heyday!  The footage from the War years, was wonderful . . . seeing the massive crowds of people moving through the station, many of them in military uniforms.  It also showed the different trains, coming and going from across the country, and secret underground tracks, for special VIP use.

Then it showed the downfall of the station, when it fell on hard times over the years.  The photos of the neglect and deterioration were shocking.  Homeless people living there, and trashing the interior, etc.  There were plans to demolish it at that time, but Jackie Kennedy and others stepped in with plans for the complete renovation.   I hope this documentary is still out there, and maybe is shown on other channels?  I would love to see it again.  I would especially like to know what it looks like now?

As a high school graduation gift, I took my oldest grandson to NYC when he was on his spring break during his senior year.  We did all the touristy things there, but one of his favorites was going to Grand Central Station.  There was so much activity and so many people it was almost overwhelming.  He lives in New Orleans when he is not in college and thought it was a great place.  Two years later, his younger brother didn't want to go there and I was disappointed!

RAMMEL

When I was still working I had to go to NYC for meetings once in a while.  I went by train that went to Grand Central and it was always during the commuting hour(s).  I was always fascinated by the amount of human movement through the terminal.  The main lobby reminded me of an ant farm.  If one was able to watch it from above it would look like ant farm - and no one ever ran into someone else - amazing.
Another observation was that if a drop of rain fell there would immediately be someone selling umbrellas.  Seemed like they just came out of nowhere.

The documentary I mentioned about Grand Central, played on PBS, not on The History Channel.  So there is a possibility that it can be found On Demand by going to PBS archive selections.  It's worth watching.  That reminds me - all my thinking about that documentary, made me remember an old radio program, that was on on Saturday morning after "Let's Pretend". The voice of the announcer would intone, "Grand - Central - Station", as if he were speaking over a loud speaker system.  Anyway, that was the name of the program, "Grand Central Station".  Does anyone else remember it, or "Let's Pretend"?

Lindancer

Marilyne, I remember Let Pretend, Last night I watched Desk Set, of course it was a fun and relaxing movie.

Marilyne and Lindancer,  I loved "Let's Pretend"!  I would line my dolls up in front of the radio and give each an animal cracker and myself some juice.  Then "we" listened to the program.  (Of course, you know who ate the crackers!   ;D )
Does anyone remember Phil Spitalny (sp?) And His All Girl Orchestra on Sunday nights?  (How did we know they were all female?)
