Patricia....and I even spelled it right!!!!      A vague memory popped up after I looked at the link; I remembered seeing that picture...somewhere.

Marilyne

Thank you Patricia!  I really enjoyed looking at all three websites!  I don't remember the name Phil Spitalny, but I definitely remember, The Hour of Charm Orchestra!  There was also another all girl band at that time that I recall - The Ida Ray Hutton orchestra.

I never missed Let's Pretend, on Saturday mornings.  My brother and I would sit on the floor, close to the big console radio, and sing along with the "Cream of Wheat" theme song!  Brings back wonderful memories. :)

Tomereader1

Marilyne, tonight on TCM, three straight Jeanette MacDonald/Nelson Eddy movies!!!

Did you get an email from me the other day?  My computer bottomed out, and I don't think anyone got emails from me, or sent any to me.   Actually, it wasn't the computer, but the Wireless Router, which wouldnt let me get on-line.  Phone company had to come fix me!

Marilyne

Tome - No, I didn't get an email from you!  I guess it's lost out there somewhere in cyberspace?  Send again!

We watched a new show on AMC this week, called Lodge 49.  Sort of a light comedy, with a bunch of odd-ball characters and implausible situations.  We sat through the one hour opener, but not sure we'll stick with it??  Seems that the writers are trying too hard to be quirky and clever.  Did anyone else see it?

Other than that, nothing much that's worth commenting on.  AJ watched the TMC movie, Fat Man and Little Boy, last night.  The names refer to the two atomic bombs, dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, that ended WWII.  It starred Paul Newman, and looked to be pretty good, but I didn't feel like watching it.

Marilyne

Tome - Just letting you know that I got your email, and I answered it . . . so if you don't get my response, you'll know the problem still exists.

I did record a couple of the Jeanette MacDonald/Nelson Eddy operetta movies, this week.  I watched New Moon yesterday, and I loved it!  Yes, the story itself is corny, and is very much like most of the "Mac & Eddy" movies from the 1930's . . . but the music is absolutely beautiful.  The Victor Herbert songs in this one were "Stouthearted Men", "Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise", and "Lover Come Back to Me".

I hope to watch Naughty Marietta, this afternoon.  This operetta features the music of Sigmund Romberg.  Two of my favorites are "I'm Falling in Love With Someone", and, "Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life", at last I've found thee.

Lindancer

Marilyne, I love all the movies with J. McDonald.

Tuesday night I watched the Castaways, I never watch any of the new TV. I will not watch next week, just could not get interest with any of the lost. They kept talking about being lonely, I know it is a TVshow. but a camera man was right in their face. I guess Ido not have any imagination for a show like that , what do they call them?  Reality

Marilyne, the movie of "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" is now showing on Netflix.  It is a very good movie.  I couldn't remember if they stuck to the story line of the book, since it's been a couple of years since I read it, and also read it in my f2f book club, but I think it was pretty close.  Exceptionally well done, nothing X-rated or objectionable.  I think all here who enjoy a good movie, will enjoy this one, and if you read the book...even better!

FlaJean

Tome, glad you mentioned the Guernsey Literary movie on Netflix.  Netflix was supposed to add it to my list when it became available but I haven’t even gone into Netflix for a week or more.  I loved the book and hope the movie is as good.

Tomereader1

FlaJean, "Guernsey" is well worth your time to watch it.  Good cast, excellent acting, all-around great movie.  Do watch it.  It is streaming now on Netflix.
Enjoy!

Marilyne

Tome - I loved the book, so I'm looking forward to seeing the "Guernsey" movie on Netflix.  Like you, it's been years since I read it, so if they don't follow the story exactly, I probably won't notice.  I just remember really enjoying it.   I most likely won't watch it until the weekend, since I have stuff going on every evening until then.

I haven't really seen anything else this past week, except for the "Mac & Eddy" movies.  I love that term! :D  After doing some research online, I discovered that that is the term fans of Jeanette/Nelson use when talking about them.  I hadn't realize that there was such a large following of fans!  I did discover that when you go to On Demand, you can scroll down to the section that says Networks, and then go to TCM, and view the free list of movies that are available. (Besides the ones that are playing on the regular daily schedule.)  TCM lists all of the Mac & Eddy film that were produced, so I had a good time viewing my favorites.  So far I haven't seen the one where he plays a Canadian Mountie, but lots of people seem to love it.

Now Guernsey and Jersey were the first 2 Islands that the Germans moved into at the start of WW2. England fastly sent many Small boats to try and get some people off them. The Germans let some of the mothers and Children leave but then started shooting at the boats. None of the Men let leave. Many of the people were then sent to my town and I made many friends until 1946. These Island very popular for holidays from UK and many English Retired there. Now back popular. 2 of my friends left their Husbands on the Island . The Red cross found out they had been shipped into Germany to work in Camps. They did then get back to UK in 1946. People in US.  do not realize just how close that the Germans got to UK. Those islands the closest. UK then tried getting children in UK out to Canada. Bothered me as my youngest brother was only 5. I was to old to be on the list. Had to stop doing it as one Ship of children got torpedoed of coast of Ireland.

Jeanne, I'm so sorry that you and your family had to suffer through the terrible tragedy of WWII.  I'm glad you survived.  War is terrible as we all know, but even though we read about it here in America, it was hard to realize how bad it was.  I was 6 when Pearl Harbor was bombed--I think it was a Sunday.  We'd come home from church and were listening to the news when President Roosevelt came on the radio with his famous "This day will live in infamy speech".  I also remember the day that Japan surrendered as it was about 4:00 in the afternoon.  Our grandmother got us dressed and we walked up to town to attend a prayer service of Thanksgiving for the end of the war.   I was about 8 years old then.

Marilyne

JeanneP = thanks for the information on Guernsey and Jersey.  I didn't realize that any  English territory had been occupied by Germany during the War.  it wasn't until I read the book, "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society".  Now I'm anxious to see the movie, and will probably watch it this weekend.

Marilyne

After a long summer, of not much to choose from on TV, looks like lots of new and returning shows are available now!

Tome, recommended "The Darkest Hour", a movie playing on Netflix, about Winston Churchill, and the British entry into WWII.  I haven't seen it yet, but hope to watch it tonight.  Another WWII movie, "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society", is also playing on Netflix. (As discussed in recent posts here.)  After we watch those two movies, we plan to start on the series "Ozark".  Season #2 has started, but we haven't seen Season #1 yet, so will start watching it soon.  Our son & dil, really like that show and keep asking if we've seen it, so we'll give it a look sometime over the weekend.

CallieOK

I watched "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" last night.  Enjoyed it very much!! I had read the book. One of the main characters is played by Penelope ? , who starred in the "Last Tango In Halifax" series.

Haven't really had time to take a look at any other new Netflix offerings.  Looking forward to those mentioned here.

Marilyne

The Darkest Hour: a wonderful movie!  We watched it last night, and enjoyed it very much.  Gary Oldman, received the Oscar for Best Actor, and it was definitely deserved.  The entire cast was excellent.  I thought it was going to be a bit boring, but it wasn't at all.
Tome - Thank you for recommending it.

Tomereader1

Marilyne, as regards "Ozark", my General f2f Book club has only one man, we call him our fearless leader, as he was instrumental in getting the Club together and has been active all these years.  We tend to devote the last ten or fifteen minutes of the Club's meeting to each of us mentioning a Netflix/Amazon movie that we enjoyed.  He has been trying to get us to watch "Ozark" since it began.  I guess I will give Season 1 a try, and see if I like it.  I have so many that I have started, and tend to watch one or two episodes, then move on to another in my Watch List.  I'll catch up on all of them eventually.  Did anyone here watch, or care to watch, the Stephen King series "Castle Rock"?   Sissy Spacek is in it.  It is pure "Stephen King": mystery, psychological and all that jazz.  Marilyne, I know this is not your cuppa tea .Maybe some here might be King fans.  I think it's on Hulu, so I don't know how many subscribe to that.  That's the same channel that has "The Handmaid's Tale".

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society: we watched it last night and liked it a lot! I was struck with the realization that when you watch British movies or TV shows, you will see the same actors over and over again . . . and they are all so good!  The main character in "Guernsey", is Lily James, who played Juliet.  I had seen her just the night before in, the Darkest Hour.  I looked her up, and found out that she was also in Downton Abbey, playing Rose, the middle daughter.

Callie - as you mentioned, another of the main characters in "Guernsey", was  Penelope Wilton, who played Isabel Crawley, in Downton Abbey, and was also in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.  She is such a versatile actress!  Others,  I recognized from Game of Thrones, and other TV shows.

Tome - Next on the watch list, is Ozark.  Since your book club friend recommended it, maybe you'll watch it too?  You're correct - I'm not a big Stephen King fan, although I do like some of his "gentler" books and movies.  I loved Stand By Me, and The Shawshank Redemption.

JeanneP

I just got through watch the last of the Series on Chief Insp. Alan Banks. A british one I had missed over the years. Went through 5 series. Each DvD was about 2 and 1/2 hours. Fantastic. So sad that they have now ended.
I don't have all the stations on TV where can bring these BBC shows up. I can usually just go into my library under. BBC and amazing how soon the Library get the DVD. Need to look into it and nothing seems to be worth watching on regular TV anymore.  Looks like there could be a few good ones starting Sept. and Oct.
JeanneP

FlaJean

I’ve seen “Shawshank Redemption”. Several times.  I didn’t realize that was written by Stephen King.  I always associate him with those wayout scary stories.

SCFSue

Shawshank Redemption is one of my favorite films.  I watch it every time it comes on.  I haven't seen it recently, though.

Neil Simon, playwright, screenwriter, and TV comedy writer, died yesterday in New York City, at the age of 91.  Most of his plays became Broadway hits, and then were later made into award winning movies.  He is most famous for The Odd Couple, Sweet Charity, The Goodbye Girl, Barefoot in the Park, and many, many others.  Two of my favorites are Lost in Yonkers, and Cinderella Liberty.  All of his movies play often, on Turner Classics.  I'm sure TCM, will be doing a retrospective on him in the next week or so, and will be playing most of his movies.

Marilyne

Has anyone else taken a look at the Netflix series, Ozark?  We started watching Season #1, last week, and I'm not sure if I'll stick with it or not. AJ likes it, but I'm tired of this same recycled old plot . . . innocent nice guy gets mixed up with a drug cartel, that escalates out of control with violent killings, threats, FBI involvement, evil gangs from Mexico or Central America, etc., etc., etc.

This "nice guy", (Jason Batemen), literally takes the money and runs. Quickly leaves Chicago, and moves with this wife (Laura Linney), to the Lake of the Ozark, Missouri, where he begins money laundering the $8 million   This involves dealing with plenty of redneck characters, sociopathic women, lurking FBI men in disguise, and one wise crotchety old man.

The thing that really annoys me, is that when they ran off to Missouri, they took their two precocious children with them . . . a boy about 13, and a girl, 15.  Not believable at all!  If you took the money and were being chased by a violent drug cartel, would you take your children with you?? :yikes:  I think not!

Tomereader1

I've been off-line since 8/31.  Squirrels chewed through some of my outside wiring, totally destroying my Broadband, so I couldn't get on-line, watch Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, do searches on my Kindle, and my Ring doorbell didn't work either!  What a mess up.  A.T&T did schedule appt for today, and he got me all patched up and working. (I guess till the squirrels come back!)  I don't know how he patched it, I can't see anything really, but it's up high near the eave of the house.

Marilyne

We have a squirrel problem here too.  They seem to have multiplied, now that we no longer have a cat.  Not that he ever chased or caught one, but I think his presence on the deck and around the back yard, always kept them at a distance.   I didn't realize squirrels could do so much damage to outside wiring!  Good that you're all fixed now, and can get back to the computer, as well as some serious TV watching! :)

Sandy

I watched the first season of Ozark,
and have been waiting patiently for the second season...

Yes,  there are a lot of unconventional
things happening here....

I absolutlely love this series,  and have not
been disappointed watching the second season.

The characters are flawed.  But I find much of
humanity is also.

Here we get right inside a number of families...
Which is unusual,  because I believe that
in real life, we don't usually get that close
and up front and personal, to most other
people that we encounter....

I may think that I know what is going on
inside my neighbors home...   but do I really?

Most likely,  NOT.

I am looking foward to season three.

Sandy - Tonight we'll be watching the final episode of Season #1 of Ozark. I'm really liking it now, and glad that I stuck with it. I know I was ultra critical of the first episode, but from then on, I started liking it!  Jason Bateman and Laura Linney, are always good, in any movie or TV show that I've seen them in, so it figures that I would like this if I gave it a chance.   I can't get over the fabulous actors in this show!

In fact, I'm aways impressed with the high quality of acting in all the Netflix shows, and also on Amazon and in the HBO and Showtime series.  There is so much talent out there!  Now there are plenty of shows being produced all the time, so gives lots of actors the chance that they never had in the past.

CallieOK

Marilyne, do you....or anyone... watch "The amazing Mrs. Maisel" on Amazon?'

Tomereader1

I tried, Callie.  But I just could't get into it.  The guy in my f2f book group highly recomended it,, he and his wife love it. Not for me, at this time, maybe later.

Tome,  reason I asked is that my granddaughter, who lives in NYC, was hired as an Extra for one episode of "....Mrs. Maisel".
Don't know much about her experience but she told her Mom she had to wear a cone bra, a girdle and crinoline petticoats.  I don't know when it's supposed to be aired.
However,  I don't have Amazon so probably won't get to see her.  Of course, she could be in the back row of a crowd and/or the scene(s) she's in could end up on the cutting room floor.
