Oldiesmann: Finally got the AmazonBot situation under control. I basically changed some server settings to tell AmazonBot that it's not allowed to access anything on the site. That should fix the speed issues we've been experiencing lately

This is in reference to a posting about the "Yahoo" mess. Speaking of technology glitches:  Tuesday our TV was working great, Wednesday evening we turned it on, and the little green light was just flashing on the TV, the Dish  receiver lights were on, and I could see TV on the bedroom TV.
Thought my surge protector had gone completely out, put the plug into the wall socket instead, and rcd. TV but with strange channel numbers.  Couldn't access the Dish service. Finally called Dish (they take a long time but can usually talk you thru a problem).  The nice gentleman (from another country) talked me thru, step by step, into "reprogramming" my Remote control. (lots of steps!!) but got 'er done in maybe 20-25 minutes of following instructions.  Had our viewing pleasure back!  Told the hubby, he could probably get along well without me, but take his TV away, and he is distraught, to say the least.
Phew.  If I can remember the steps the guy took me thru in case that ever happens again with the remote...

Marilyne

Tome - Glad you got your Dish TV, up and running again.  No matter what kind of service we might have, there will be an occasional glitch in the system.  With the Comcast cable, it's usually a matter of getting down on your hands and knees, and unplugging and then re-plugging the cable connection.  It's a real pain, in more ways than one. :P

Longmire, returns tonight on Netflix!  We plan to watch only the first episode, and string the rest of them out over the next couple of weeks.  It's hard not to "binge watch"! :D

JeanneP

Maryz  Now will he be the one demonstrating it. Don't watch QVC but will watch it if I can remember. What is it selling.  The Pans or is is just a cooking show?
JeanneP

maryz

Jeanne, my nephew won't be the one on camera.  He's the chef, and they are his recipes.  His business partner will be the one on camera.  I have no idea how QVC works.  I've never watched it, or any of the shopping channels.

I don't find those shopping channels good entertainment but will watch anything that has to do with Cooking.....

Did anyone watch Designated Survivor with Kiefer Sutherland. I did, I think I will watch it next week and see how it goes. the only other show I watch is DWTS.  Other wise it is back to HallMark

Gloria de - I read that Hallmark will be showing a whole new series of Christmas movies this year.  I'll be looking forward to watching some of those.  I love a happy ending on any Christmas story or movie.

We watched the first episode of the new Longmire, on Friday night.  I thought it was pretty good, and the characters all looked about the same.  After five years, I thought some of them might have aged a bit, but the only two who looked slightly older, were Vic, and Henry "Standing Bear".

Last night AJ was watching the Stanford/UCLA game, so I retired to the bedroom once again, and watched the PBS Saturday Night movie,  The Bridge On the River Kwai. What a great movie it was!  So deserving of it's many Academy Awards. Last Saturday I saw, From Here to Eternity, which was equally as good.  They sure don't make quality films anymore, like those two winners.

JeanneP

Not one thing for me to watch on my TV tonight. Don't care for what Public Tel. Showing.  I have Cable but don't buy into as many channels as some of you here on S and F. Have on.  Not really a big TV person.
JeanneP

Lindancer

JeanneP, I also have cable but I have to get the extra, because I want the golf channel. I love golf and was able to play until 3 years ago when my walking and breathing got so bad. Otherwise I pretty much stick to the two HallMarks, HGTV, antenaTV etc. I also watch GMA and of course GH (soap) which I have been watching from day one.

Marilyne, I am trying the one with Kiefer Sutherland on Tuesday.  This morning I enjoyed CBS This Morning, it was very good the whole program was about Charles Osgood, who just retired.
I also like happy endings.  Of course not always in the real world, but in my dream land it is.

As an update to my TV problem of the other day: worked great for one day.  Next day, tried to turn it on, and TV just would not come on.  Tried the on-line Chat with Dish, and that person was totally unable to walk me thru a fix., nothing worked.  Next day, I hauled out my Smart Samsung TV which I'd had in the back bedroom for about a year, still in box, waiting on daughter to help me hook it up. She's a whiz at electronics!  She came Saturday, and after an all-day moving out of VHS tapes and other junk that had collected on my entertainment center, we got the old TV moved out, the new one hooked up, and wow, does it have an awesome picture, and all the Smart goodies, Amazon, Netflix, etc.  Only one problem, well two actually, my Sound System won't hook up to it, and the DVD player doesn't have HDMI to hook up to it.  Gotta get a new DVD player.  The sound system has either not enough or too many of the cables that hook into the TV.  May have to get a new one of those too!  But hey, the Dish still works.  Now to do some shopping for electronics!  I think I need to ask somebody over in the forum for electronics to coach me on some of the wording for choosing a DVD player.  Wish me luck!

Marilyne

Hooray Tomereader!  I'm really impressed that you and your daughter, got nearly everything straightened out and put together!  Yes, I think the folks in the electronics forums can not only help you with a DVD player, but also with your TV sound system.

Marilyne

Jeanne - There are lots of good shows on your cable channels that you might enjoy.  If you don't like commercials on either network or the cable channels, you can record the show on your VCR, watch it later, and scroll through the commercials.

A strange thing happened to our TV last night.  The color went out, or I should say - the color went bad!  All of a sudden, skin tones are a mustard yellow, and other colors are there, but not right.  Everything looks very dark and unnatural. Both regular TV, and Netflix/Amazon streaming are affected.  Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Marilyne

I forgot to mention The Great Debate, tonight on TV! I wasn't going to watch, because I dislike all the media hoopla, but I think it would be wise to take a look. It really annoys me that the press is calling it "The entertainment event of the year"!  It should be serious and thoughtful, but I'm afraid it will be mean and accusatory, on both sides.

CallieOK

Marilyne,  I feel the same way about the Debate.  I'll probably turn on closed captioning and mute the sound.  Remains to be seen how long I last.
The debate begins at 8:00 CDT and the tv guide says DWTS will be on at 7:00 for an hour instead of the usual two.

Marilyne

Callie - The debate beings here at 6:00 PDT, so should be finished by 8:00, when DWTS starts.

Our power was out for almost two hours . . . just now came back on.  Not a good day for it, as the outside temp was exactly 101 degrees when it went out!  The house heated up quickly, without the AC, as you can imagine. :P  It may likely go out again, before the debate, since I'm sure the system is overloaded in this heat.

Marilyne

We watched the debate, and were both underwhelmed. That's probably all I'd better say about that subject. ::)  I was tired of sitting, when it was finally over, so I didn't feel like two hours of DWTS.  I'll catch it this afternoon, I hope.

#2 daughter went to see the movie Sully, over the weekend, and was quite impressed. I looked in the paper this morning to see where it was playing, and noticed that The Light Between Oceans is already gone!!  I'm surprised, as I thought it was an excellent book, and figured it would make a good movie . . . but obviously, nobody in this area gave it a chance.  I think it only played in theaters here for two weeks?  The only good thing, is that it will show up On Demand, fairly soon - and I plan to watch it as soon as it does.

Tomereader1

Hope you didn't have any power problems again Marilyne.
We got that lovely cold front they were blathering about, yesterday our high was roughly 70, it showed to be a little bit cooler on my front porch, but we had a nice breeze.  It's not awfully hot today, 77 degrees.

SCFSue

I watched the debate for about 25 minutes--but couldn't take anymore of it.  Too much posturing, arguing, and not enough pertinent points.  This election year has been the most disturbing of almost any since I was able to vote.  And I wasn't able until 1972 because we were not able to register in my husband's home state of Alabama until then.  He was still on active duty then and that year Navy, Army, and other services were permitted to register by mail in their home states for the first time that year by mail (at least that was the first time we were able to register).

Sue

JeanneP

The light between Oceans was only on for a few days here also. Not even a week.

Yesterday I went to see. "Bridget Jones Baby" Is is cute. goes over 2 hours though.
This one theatre has put millions into it this year. Seats like lounge chairs. Even rock. Only thing is now place to put a drink between seats.

Gotten cold here today. Needed a jacket.

Watching "Designated Survivor" tonight...

I think that it is going to be good,  and a
bit scarey.

As we never,  ever  know, now
do we??

Designated Survivor is really looking like a great show!  I missed the very first episode.  Maybe they'll show it again soon. Or I might be able to get it on the computer.

Lindancer

I also watched Designated Survivor, last night. so far I thought it interesting and differnt.

Designated Survivor looks to be the best of the new TV shows.  I haven't seen it yet, but will watch it tomorrow night or over the weekend.  Anyone who has On Demand, can scroll to Network Channels, and then to ABC, and then to "DS".

I recorded the show featuring the mac and cheese recipes from maryz's nephew, but haven't watched it yet either. Our cable has been out of whack for the past couple of days, and we've lost our color!  The shows are all there, but I don't want to watch anything in this strange sepia tone that we now have. Mainly yellow, gray, a dull pink, and all black background.  Anyway, the Cable Guy is coming in the morning, so I hope it's something he can fix?  :-\

maryz

I ordered some of the mac & cheese (expensive, but looks good).  The segment starts at 7:40 (40 minutes into the first hour), if you don't want to watch the whole thing.

Tomereader1

Marilyne, I hope your TV problem is something that can be fixed.  As I posted earlier, I had to go to my new TV that I had gotten on sale roughly a year ago and still had in the box!  The new Smart TV's are at a good price, but will probably get cheaper as we approach the Christmas sales. I sure hated to see my old JVC go by the wayside.  I guess it might possibly be "fixable", but it would more than likely come at a price where I could buy a new TV!  Good luck to you.

Yes, that Designated Survivor show is gonna be on my regularly scheduled viewing.  So much of the rest of the new shows are just tripe.  On the TV ads, they are saying that "Bull" is the #1 new TV drama, and I can't reconcile that with just one episode having been shown.  I gave it a second chance with Epi #2, but didn't get that much better IMHO.

"Bull" :   The character  "Dr. Jason Bull"
Played by Michael Weatherly  is
definitely different then the  character
that Michael played on NCIS:  "Tony DiNozzo".

I loved the character "Tony" on NCIS
and still like The character "Bull"...

But they are very different characters,
IMHO.

I admire Michael Weatherly's   ability
to play this very different role after
his  very successful run as "Tony" on NCIS.

I like Bull, and will continue to watch,
until I don't ...

maryz - I watched "In the Kitchen with David" this afternoon, so finally got to see the Macarollin' presentation, and all the recipes!  Wow, they were delicious looking. Can't decide which one looked the best to me . . . maybe the Philly Cheese Steak??  I know you are proud of your nephew, and I'm sure he has a great future ahead of him!
(Oh, and also - that Flapper Pie at the beginning of the program sure did look good!)

maryz

Thanks, marilyne. I hope it's a success for him

What I missed that cooking show again. Didn't watch that channel only one other time.  Mary let me know if it will be shown again. As it was a hour different for me.

Anyone still watching DWTS?  So many conflicts here, that I have only caught portions of the show, the past two weeks.  However, I did see most of the dancers on Monday night, but then missed Tuesday.  I was kinda surprised that "Babyface", was eliminated.  I thought he was a pretty good dancer.  The other one, "Vanilla Ice", was not nearly as good, so I wasn't surprised to see him go.

It's pretty obvious, that gymnast Laurie Hernandez is going to be the winner. She sure is cute, and is an excellent dancer.   The little gal, Terra Jolie, is doing very well.  It must be extremely hard for her to do those dance moves.
