Sandy - I'm enjoying the final season of Girls, so far.  When it's all over, I plan to go back and watch a few of the episodes from other seasons that I liked the best.  My very favorite was in Season #4, I think?  It featured Hannah's grandmother, mother, aunts and cousin.  Not only was it very funny, but there were so many true things in that episode that I could relate to. When I locate the name and number of that particular episode, I'll let you know.  I think you'll like it too.

JeanneP

I had never heard of "Girls" but see the Library has 4 seasons. I just ordered no 1 and 2 to see if I like it.
Spent 12 hours last 3 days watching "The Affair". I had not seen that either. Got hooked on it so watches season 1 and 2 . A waiting list for Season 3.

My daughter just told me about having watched - live - the races from Epsom Downs in England.  She loved getting to see all the races, not just one, and the horses and the ladies in all their finery.  And even the Queen, since she attended every day.  Of course, with the time difference, they were on early in the morning.  This was a couple of weeks ago.  She thinks they were broadcast on MSNSN (MSN Sports Network).  In any case, they might show reruns sometime or you might be able to find them On Demand.

Maryz - Thanks for telling us about the Epsom Downs races in England.  I'll see if it's available On Demand.  I love to watch events in England, where the Royal Family attends in all their finery!  Those hats are fun to see.  Reminds me of my favorite scene in My Fair Lady, at the Ascot Races?  All spectators dressed in black and white.

I've never attended a horse race in England, but did go to a wonderful steeple chase race (actually races) in Ireland.  It was a chilly drizzly day there, but all the lovely young Irish ladies were dressed in colorful dresses and huge hats (which I'd priced in Dublin at 200 pounds and higher) with no coat, jacket or wrap.  The temperature couldn't have been higher than low 40's!  Many of the young men attending were above the bleachers in a bar watching a soccer match between Ireland and some other country and not watching the races at all.  They were drinking beer, cheering and yelling.  They had on winter jackets!

Afterwards, we toured the stables at a nearby horse farm where many of the horses were stabled. Despite the drizzle, we enjoyed the spectacle and the races, too.  We had gone down to the rail for a couple of races and were approached by 2 Irish gentlemen about our ages.  They said, "I say, are ye Yanks?" and then what brings you to Ireland?  My husband said , "her mother was a Carney".  One of the men piped up with "me mither-in-law is a Carney (which I'm sure she spelled Kearney).  We didn't find any connections, but enjoyed the chat!

Ireland is a beautiful Emerald green all seasons of the year.  It's one of my favorite places to visit.

I was always around horses in my teens and later as Family were breeders, Did the shows and trainers. Went to most of the big shows but enjoyed the small one more. Always enjoyed watching the Jumpers. My mothers husband bred, trained and sold some to people in the USA many went into Kentucky.

My elder brother was the last one and he passed away a few year ago.

I thought I left a message here about the 4th of July TV specials and movies, but I don't see it, so  I guess I didn't click on the Post box?  I can't believe that was almost a week ago!  Time goes by so quickly, that sometimes it's almost shocking.  Summer is half over all ready. :o

As for television . . . not much on, except for reruns, and movies that I've recorded on my DVR.  We've mostly been watching the shows on HGTV, and the movies on Turner.  I've been catching up on the final season of Girls, but haven't found it as funny and fresh as the earlier seasons.  I've only seen about four of the final ten shows, so maybe it will get better??

Do any of you have a favorite HGTV show?  I like Fixer Upper the best, but I still watch a lot of the House Hunter style of show, where the couple looks at three or four houses, and then chooses one to buy.  My favorites are the ones that take place at the beach side cities, or on the many islands that are located in the USA.

Does anyone have any viewing suggestions?  I'm pretty much open to anything that sounds  interesting, and I have most of the available channels.

Lindancer

Marilyne, I watch a lot of COZ and antenna TV. I still enjoy watching Johnny Carson, comes on at 10PM and 2MA. to night Lauren Bacall is on.  the other night was a show from 1978 with Lucy Ball.

Of course I still watch Murder She Wrote, even though I know the story.

I've been catching up on my DVR'd programs.
The machine only had 7 hours left for HD recording, although many hours if I want to record in SD.  I had the entire season of "Genius" about Einstein, so over two or three nights, hubby and I watched those.  Still have about l/2 an hour of that finale.  It was an excellent series, very informative, and so well acted.  Geoffrey Rush in anything is great acting!  IMHO.  Watched the first episode of "Feud" about BettyDavis/JoanCrawford feud.  DVR'd the rest, and am catching up one episode at a time.  Boy that was some "war" between 2 Hollywood stars.  I think Sarandon's role was much better than Jessica Lange's, in that she was more believable as Davis than Lange as Crawford.

Still have "To Walk Invisible" about the Bronte sisters to watch.  Also, "King Charles III" on Masterpiece, just 2 hrs
worth of recording.  We've been watching the Sunday night PBS shows, "My Mother and Other Strangers"; "Grantchester" and "Tennison" prequel to the "Prime Suspect" series.  You can tell we've just been staying out of the heat 90+ with heat indexes in the 100's.  Poor old A/C unit keeps plugging away, PTL it will keep on till end of Summer.

Marilyne

Gloria de - I looked to see if I get the COZ channel, and I do!  However, I don't have Antenna TV.  I'd especially like to see some of the old Johnny Carson shows, as well as Carol Burnett, and The Rockford Files.  Three of my favorites.  I'll take a better look, and see if I can find a listing.

Tome - Thanks for some great suggestions. You've given me a lot of ideas.  I had forgotten about the Genius/Einstein, series, but I'm sure it's available On Demand. I know my husband would like that one. I like Geoffrey Rush, and have enjoyed all of his movies over the years.  One of my favorites is Frida, where he plays Leon Trotsky.  All actors did an excellent job in that film.  I don't recall if Salma Hayek, was nominated for an Oscar that year, but she certainly should have been.  If you haven't seen it, I'm sure It's available On Demand.  As with any film where the actors speak with foreign accents, be sure to turn on the closed captions!   If you don't, you miss a lot of dialogue.

It sounds like you're enjoying, Feud?  We watched only one episode, and were not too impressed.  I expected to like it, because I'm a big fan of "old Hollywood", but it just didn't grab me at all.  Maybe I should give it another look?   The PBS shows sound good too.

FlaJean

There are two seasons of "Dr. Blakes Mysteries" on Netflix which we enjoyed.  This is the description found on the Internet.  We are just hoping Netflix picks up more of the series.  Although the end did stop at a good place.
"Accompanied by haunting memories of his service time in World War II, Dr Lucian Blake returns home to Australia after 30 years to take over his deceased father's medical practice. As he deals with his own personal loss and changed by his war experiences, the wry, personable doctor performs his other role as police surgeon with gusto. His unconventional and unpredictable manner unnerve some, but it becomes clear Dr Blake is ahead of his time in his use of forensic science, and in his own understanding of the human heart, to help solve murder mysteries in the country town of Ballarat."

Sandy

I am going to start to watch Dr. Blakes Mysteries on netflix.

I particularly like Aussie Films (if that is what one calls them)...
perhaps because I can understand them better.   :coolsmiley:

Marilyne, when I watched the 1st episode of "Feud", I also was not impressed.  Didn't think it would be something I would care to watch 7 more episode of.  However, giving shows a second chance, usually gets me to a real decision.
So, I DVR'd Epi#2 and watched it later, I thought maybe there would be some interesting stuff, so I just DVR'd the entire series.  Like I said, watching one episode at a time, at my leisure, helped me get into it.  I just loved seeing so many of today's stars portraying people in that Holly-
wood era, and hearing the off-the-wall stories/behind the scenes finagling/back-stabbing.  The actors gave good performances. (I must say here, that I have ALWAYS intensely disliked Joan Crawford so Lange's portrayal did not help me with that one iota!)

Marilyne

Tonight we watched West Side Story, for the umteenth time!  I didn't intend to watch it, but it's an easy one to get caught up in.  It isn't my favorite musical, but it's definitely one of the greats!  Speaking of musicals, a couple of weeks ago, son and dil went to San Francisco to see Hamilton.  They were very impressed, and loved every minute of it.  Dil said that all the hype is definitely deserved!  I didn't ask them what they paid for tickets, but I've heard that for this SF production, prices start at $450,and go up to over $1,000. :yikes:

FlaJean

Sandy, hope you enjoy the Dr. Blake series as much as we did.  Another series we enjoyed a lot was Murdock's Mysteries (Canadian series) starring Yannick Bisson. They have many of the series but disappointed that I never got the last couple that showed  Murdock marrying the coronor Dr. Ogden.  I think they are on Acorn but we decided not to join it.

Sandy

I found "Murdock's Mysteries " on Acorn...
And have started watching the series and episodes.

I also just finished the Boardwalk Empire series.   This was
really good,  except I was disappointed in the ending...

Since "Crime does not pay",  then the ending was entirely realistic.

Living back in the 20's was and exciting and very dangerous
time.  My parents were teenagers then and not so much
involved in the politics of that time.

I liked this series, very much.

Sandy - I liked Boardwalk Empire a lot.  One of my top favorites of all the series I've watched.  Like you, I was disappointed in the ending.  It seemed rushed and incomplete. I thought Nucky and Margaret would end up together, but that would have been too trite, I guess. It looked like Margaret went on to have an affair with Jos. Kennedy? I surely did like Steve Buscemi,  in this starring role.  Other characters that stand out in my memory were James/Jimmy, Chalky, and Richard.  Interesting characters and excellent actors.

Sandy

This afternoon I watched "Snowden" on showtime..

The NSA's illegal surveillance techniques are leaked to the public by one of the agency's employees, Edward Snowden, in the form of thousands of classified documents distributed to the press.

Certainly a movie that made me think about "whistleblowers",   how they are treated and
the service that they perform in our democracy.

Eye opening,  to say the least.

Marilyne, I watched West Side Story last night also and enjoyed it immensely, plus shed some tears.  What a sad and tragic story of prejudice and hatred.  Afterwards I continued to watch on TCM and thoroughly enjoyed the Shakespeare play--the one with Denzel Washington as the commander of troops (Much Ado about Nothing) and have already forgotten the other actors, almost all famous.  Also on Wednesday night I watched the broadcast of "Will" which I think may be the first of a series on TNT about young Will Shakespeare and his start as a play wright.  Another excellent program.

I finally got to see The Wizard of Lies - the Bernie Madoff story with Robert de Niro.  (HBO had a free weekend, including On Demand).  It was wonderfully done - albeit of a terrible event.

Sandy, I haven't seen Snowden but I did watch Citizen 4 which is the documentary by Laura Poitras.  It won a lot of documentary awards and I think objective in its presentation.  Whether or not one agrees with what Snowden did, it is very interesting how it all came about and filmed as the aftermath was happening with the real people involved.  It is well worth watching.

Sandy - We watched Snowden last night.  I thought it was very informative and interesting.  I still need a lot of things explained to me?  Fascinating stuff, but hard to understand some of what happened?

maryz - Glad you had a chance to see The Wizard of Lies. It was very well done, and I imagine it will receive lots of Emmy nominations.  Lots of good TV programs now available about real people.  Besides Wizard, there is Feud- Bette Davis & Joan Crawford, Genius- Einstein, Snowden, and To Walk Invisible- the Bronte sisters.

FlaJean - I had not heard of Citizen 4, but I'll read up on it, and probably add it to my "watch list".  Maybe it will clear up some things that I didn't fully understand in Snowden.

Watched "Snowden" on Saturday.  It was very good, and enlightening (IMHO).  The young actor did a terrific job in the role.

Dr. Zhivago  is on to night, have not seen it in a few years.  LOve the music.  I even watched some of the Christmas shows ??? on Hallmark last night.

Gloria de - Doctor Zhivago is in my Top Ten favorite movies, and one that I never tire of watching over and over again.  I have the DVD, but also have it on my DVR recorder, which is good, because I won't be able to watch it on TCM tonight. :) There are some scenes in the film, that are so spectacular, I look forward to them every time I watch it.

Tome - The actor who played "Snowden", is Joseph Gordon-Levitt.  He's been in movies since he was a child . . . comes from a show biz family.  I've only seen him in one other movie, 500 Days of Summer, with Zoey Deschanel.  That was a very entertaining film.  If you've never seen it, I would recommend it.

Marilyne, I will be watching on my 42' inch screen this time, should make a difference.

Gloria de - How did you like Doctor Z,on your bigger screen?  I missed it last night, but I have it recorded, so maybe this coming weekend I'll enjoy it all over again!

Tonight I didn't feel like a movie or anything long, so just watched a bunch of HGTV shows.  We saw Fixer Upper, which was a brand new one.  Chip and Joanna's four adorable kids are looking much older. Then we saw two all new episodes of House Hunters, and that was enough TV for me.  AJ is now watching the Western Channel, and I'm going to get caught up on answering emails.

Lindancer

After watching Dr.Z, it would be hard for me to go back to my 24inch one in the bedroom.   When my husband bought me this new very large screen for my birthday one year, I was not happy with him.  I kept saying why did you buy such a large screen.  Now I cannot imagine watching my main show on anything else.   I do watch my bedroom TV 20 years old. when i go to bed at 11 and read.  I can still play my VCRs on it also it holds DVDs, which I play in the middle of the night.  I have the whole set of Dr. Quinn, Northern Exposure, Benson  etc.

Is anyone else following the long running TV series, Game of Thrones?  I've never cared for fantasy style books or movies, but somehow I got hooked on GOT!  In spite of the witches, dragons and sword fights, I'm devoted to this show. ::)

Like any other TV series, you become fond of certain characters, and must find out what's going to happen to your favorites!  Last night was episode #2 in this new season #7.  I'm hoping someone else in here is watching, so we can commiserate on some of the latest happenings??  In the past, I think Phyll was following the show, but she hasn't posted in here in a long time?

The show is adapted from the series of books by George RR Martin, A Song of Ice and Fire
