We were in the low 90's the past 3 days, but dropped to low 80's today with rain and to continue both all week.  I did get a few new flowers planted this morning. Had to pulll out the ones from my poinsetta plant, but I planted them to satisfy John. I also cleaned & filled 2 hummer feeders.

Otherwise I have been on the phone or other things related to John's sister and husband.  Her busband's sister & family are coming in tomorrow to pack up and move them to an apartment in Hubbard , Iowa near them so they can watch over them. They both are suffering from dSementia and are unhappy about moving, but I guess are resigned now. Lori, who lives in Chicago, is going to go over tomorrow to see them off and have dinner with them. She is the only one close enough to go right now. In addition to that, his younger sister has just had 2 surgeries for BC, an aggressive one, but caught early. Then yesterday her husband collapsed and had to be take to the hospital with a so-far undiagnosed infection. Then he went into A-fib last night.  He has had multiple stents put in his arteries and is a diabetic, so this may be the final blow for him.  I swear that it never rains but pours.

Darlene, Sue, & Mary, it sounds like you had wonderful Mother's Days.  Mary, I think I have eaten at that restaurant on Shem creek.  Is it well-known for coconut shrimp? Brian took us there once iff it's the same place.  Somehow, in the south, the shackiest looking waterfront restaurants have the best food.

I went to church book club last night and we had an interesting discussion. Are any of you familiar with Jimmy Wayne, the country singer?  It's a story of his life beginning with home abuse, foster homes, homelessness, etc and yet he has made a name for himself thanks to a ccouple who took him in in HS and cared for him and loved him.  Unusual book.

I need to get going. My cleaning girl just left and I've had requsts for pictures of John to display at his party from the kids, so need to get looking.  Sharon

I don't know the current temperature, but it has been softly raining for about 20 minutes and is already a bit cooler than when I walked in my neighborhood.  I stayed up late to watch a movie that didn't start until 11:00, so I am moving VERY slowly today.  I've had several e-mails about tomorrow's final garden club meeting at the University Club.  I wasn't consulted about any of the details and the location was changed and other officers didn't consult me about the plans--I'm glad this will be my last meeting in which I'm "supposed" to be in charge!

Our Sec/Treasurer has been a long time member and no matter what other leaders propose, she always has the last say.  She has nominated a young woman who has joined us recently for President--and I'm sure we will approve the nomination, although I think I might have been consulted.  The young woman seems like a nice person, but I think will be mostly influenced by the Sec/treasurer.

The rain has stopped and it's definitely a bit cooler here which is certainly appreciated.  No need to turn my AC on as ceiling fans in every room except bathrooms keep the temperature very nicely regulated.

I hope you are all having a good day--and not working too hard!  I am planning to loaf the rest of the day as I stayed up WAY too late last night!

Sue

Sharon, I think Paul said this place was fairly new.  The menu was a mimeographed page that you marked your choices on, and was only shrimp, scallops, oysters, and fish, singly or in combination, grilled or fried.  Definitely a limited menu.  And it wasn't one of those up near the main road.  I have eaten at some of the others, though - all good!

I had one nap this morning (and missed Silver Sneakers), and may get in another one this afternoon - getting caught up from the busy weekend.

I’m tired tonight, but the end is in sight for the last of the spring house cleaning.

Tomorrow is my day “off”.....bridge day.  😇

I bought some 4” fans at WalMart.  I need one by my bedside and bought two more to have on my end tables where I sit in the family room and front “parlor.”  They make the hot flashes more tolerable.

Gilbert and his lady are coming up from Ca Friday night for the weekend, I have been very busy getting the house in order and the spare room. Sonja has som scent allergies so I  amd trying to be careful about that, however I do use Tide with downy and that has an sctong scent. I haven't asked her if that will bother her. I am really glad they have decided to come up for a visit. He told me there had planned to surprise me for Mother's day but she wanted to be home with her two sons.

Anyway I have been here to read and not post. I have been doing one room at a time in  between take Freckles for walks going to Tai Chi and teaching Tai chi as well. Tomorrow and Thursday Freckles and i will be  visiting a residential facility and the hospital.

SharonE

I made a real booboo this morning. I thought this was the 4th Wed instead of the 3rd so thought I had bridge! I got up early, dressed and went to the golf club and there was no one there! I called John to see which Wed it was and he told me the 3rd, so I turned around and went home!! It was pouring down rain too!  I checked my calendar and sure enough I didn't have anything scheduled for today. I've had so much going on that I just had it in my mind that it was bridge day.  Oh well, no harm except to deprive me of an hour's sleep!

Sue, you should have stood up to that gal in Garden Club. If I were President of something I would want to be in charge.  Maybe you should warn the younger gal.  It started cooling down here yesterday and is a decent temp.

Mary, I don't blame you for napping and catching up after such a busy weekend.  It sounds like that was a different restaurant but I bet it was good with fresh fish & seafood right out of the water.

Marilyn, I don't know how you find time to do everything!  I know you will enjoy Gilbert's visit though. By the way, both Tide & Downy have "FREE" versions with no scent.  They come in white bottles. That's what I use.

I think I'll do some laundry this afternoon. The house is clean. I do need to clean out a couple drawers though.

Jane, I hope you have good cards today.  Glad the spring cleaning is done.  I'm so glad I have a cleaning girl to help me with mine.

Have a good day.  Sharon

Sue....sounds like the Secy-Treasurer is the Decision Maker, and the other Officers go along with it.  It sounds as  if they turned the President’s job into being their assistant...call these people and tell them what WE have decided.

Sharon....I have to post a weekly appt list on a white board on the fridge so we know where to be when.

Marilyn...nice Gilbert is coming up.

Beautiful morning here.  Ray’s been to the barber, and now he’s at the golf course.  I’ll be headed there in an hour or so for lunch and bridge.   Tough day, huh!

SCFSue

The Garden Club luncheon was the usual boring event due to the Sec/Treas. monopolizing every word.  Our District Director who lives nearby in Opelika was our guest, but didn't speak, either, as there was no opportunity for anyone except the Sec/Treas.  I will never accept another elected or appointed position there (just as the 2 previous Presidents have done).  At least my lunch was tasty!  Our last President hasn't attended a meeting since I was elected.  I'm sure she was fed up, too.

I've been doing laundry and out to walk already.  I have one load of wash in the dryer and plan to start another in the washer so that I can get it dry before time to go to bridge at Olyne's.  Terri is picking me up about 12:15.

I hope you all have a good day.  Jane, you are right about the Sec/Treas.  She is a long term member and is accustomed to having her way.  When we start the new year in October, I will only attend meetings which have programs that interest me.  We did vote to invite 2 young sisters who are college students to become members, but they weren't there yesterday as they are having exams now.  I don't know how long they will last as members.  If I were a young woman and exposed to this bossy B+++h, I don't think I'd take precious time out of my schedule to attend, either!

Have a nice day, Every Buddy.  I apologize for the griping.  It is "not nice" as my Grandmother used to tell us when we were young girls.  However, this forum seems to be the only place I can gripe without causing hard feelings!

Surely has been quiet in here.  I guess we're all busy - or in the "spring doldrums" - or something.  I skipped swimming this morning.  My back has been killing me.  Plus, I'm fending off a UTI and taking AZO, with it's obvious yellowing side-effect - so I thought it was best not to get in the pool.

It's lovely and cool here this morning.  Our area has had a lot of brief, hard rains the last couple of days - which have mostly skipped over my place.  Still it's cloud this morning.  Instead of the squirrel, I've been fending off mockingbirds.  They like the mealyworms I put out for the bluebirds, and I don't find feeding everybody like that.  But mockingbirds are territorial, and I'm afraid they'd keep the bluebirds away.  Oh, well - it keeps me busy.

Enjoy some spring,  Buddies!

SCFSue

Good morning, Buddies.  I'm in a better mood this morning--and am trying to forget the Garden Club mess.  Bridge was nice yesterday except that Terri had what looked like a rash on her arms--she'd been working outside the past few days.  Peggy, who is a nurse, took one look at the arms and said "I think you have the shingles!".  So Terri went to the doctor and we played without her, alternately to bid in her place and play if the player didn't have to return to the other table.  I need to call Terri this morning before Tim gets here for our library, lunch and Kroger shopping date.

Mary, you were posting while I was writing.  I hope you can do something to get rid of the mockingbirds.  I'm sure the bluebirds feel intimidated by them.  I'm sorry about the UTI and missing swimming.  Probably best to miss it, though, until the UTI clears up.

It's going to be pretty hot here this afternoon.  It's already bright and sunny after our showers late yesterday afternoon.  Have a nice day, Every Buddy.

Hot in Texas..having to walk early..Mary I love feeding and watching birds..I have a woodpecker I would like to scare off...Im not seeing bluebirds like usual...wonder if woodpecker is running them off..Have a great weekend..Darlene

SharonE

Mary, stop putting out the mealy worms for a week or so and maybe the mockingbirds will leave. Other than that, there is nothing you can do.  Sorry you have a UTI. Those are no fun.  Drink lots of water!

Sue, best to forget the Garden Club fiasco. Hope your friend doesn't have shingles.  It could be a poison ivy or allergic reaction too.  Enjoy your time with Tim today.

Yesterday was so awful and stressful due to John's sister, but Lori drove over and took them out to dinner last night and tried to calm things down. They took the cats to the Humane Society and had to put the 19 yo to sleep, but they will try to adopt out the other one. Milly was sad but beginning to accept it.  They were to leave this morning.  They had 2 freezers full of food that they packed up in coolers and Lori was taking it to a mission center in Chiccago this morning.

On top of that, the pet sitter we had scheduled for next weekend can't take Bunny because her husband has come ddown with a staph infection.  Fortunately, the kennel we have used down in Lancaster had space for her, so that is good.

My sil is having a hysterectomy today because of a small cancer. She is 87 and has heart problems, so worrying about that. John's other bil is in the hospital with pneumonia & a pulmonary embolism. He has had multiple heart surgeries and is diabetic.  I pray everyone lasts through next weekend and that we don't have 2 funerals to attend.  How is that for a depressing outlook?  But, it is in God's hands and what will be w
ill be.  But I have been so looking forward to the family get together next weekend.

It's been rainy and cloudy all week. Yesterday, not much rain, but it looks like we'll get some today again.

Hi to all, forgive my lack of sunshine today.  Sharon

SharonE

My sil came through Ssurgery fine.  Pretty good for 87 yo with heart problems.

Sharon, so sorry to hear about all your family stress.  It seems to happen more and more at our age - but usually not in such bunches.  Hugs!

And Hugs to the folks in Santa Fe, Texas -  can't believe there's been another school shooting.

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Jane

Sorry you're having a flare, jane - No fun for spring.  But I guess the changeable weather can bring it on.

Our facility is having a "Spring Fling" festival-type thing in the parking lot today.  I probably won't be going, but there should be lots of stuff going on.  Except it just started a nice slow rain.  I don't know when things are supposed to start, but I'm sure folks have been setting up.  The rain certainly doesn't help.  As much as I love to see it, I hope it stops soon.

Some of the bluebird babies have fledged.  Their colors are not as bright as the parents, and their flying is so funny to watch. They pretty much flip and flop from one perch to another close by.  But they do love the food set out.  And they're getting too big for the house.  This morning, there was one sitting on top, and one hanging onto the side of the box.  :smitten:

Did anybody watch the wedding this morning?  I didn't, but will undoubtedly see the important parts on the news during the day.  And, as Margaret says, wedding are "pass/fail".  At the end of the day, if the couple is married, they "pass", no matter what happens.

Happy weekend, Buddies.

Good morning, Mary--and every Buddy looking in.  I've had a slow start this morning.  Slept until almost 8:00 which is late for me and piddled around reading the news paper and eating breakfast.  I have just returned from walking and am planning to read more and hopefully finish the C.J. Box novel about the ranger who has gone to Yellowstone Park for an assignment.  It includes lots of information about the geysers and other natural phenomena.  More than I wanted to know, although I would have liked to tour Yellowstone when we were living in Albuquerque, but with 2 kids in H.S.  and one in Junior high, there was never enough time to do that.

I'm planning on a quiet day.  I have a bit of a tummy upset and am going to take it easy.

Have a nice day, Every Buddy.

Morning, Buddies!

It's a beautiful morning here, and nearing 80 already.  Like Sue, I need to get out and walk before it gets higher.  I do have the sheets in the wash and another two loads for later.

Rain to come tonight into tomorrow, I understand, so joints should feel better after that.

Thanks, Mary, for the hugs. I definitely needed one yesterday.  But today is a new day and I'm praying for all good things.  My sil is already home and will have a health care person coming in daily for a while.  I haven't heard from Milly, the sister who has moved to IA. I imagine she is settling in. We don't have their phone # yet. I hope all is peaceful there. Just realized I hadn't updated about my bil.  He did pass away yesterday evening, but he is to be cremated, ashes scattered and no service. So if we do go out, it will be later.  What a week!

I loved your description of the BB fledgelings.  They are so sweet.  I had a squirrel try to climb up my den window this morning to reach the feeder on the top window.  I yelled at him and he scampered off. BTW, did you know that the BB's usually have 2 broods and sometimes 3?  After the babies are gone for good, try to open the box and clean it out. They often have ants & stuff plus the old nest, so they need it cleaned.   Glad the rain cleared off.

Sue, enjoy your book.  We went to yellowstone in 1078 with the kids and covered much of the Rocky MTN area as well--CO, WY, Montana, S. Dakota. Later John and I did AZ, NM, Utah, Nevada and some of each end of CA.

Jane, I'm sorry you're hurting today.  Are you anywhere near Hubbard, IA (near Ames)? , We will probably be going there sometime this , but we haven't gotten the maps out yet.

We're to have scattered showers today and low 80's, same as the past 3 days!!

I'll probably do one load of laundry left and then read.  I'm reading Danielle Steele's THE PERFECT LIFE. It's about a star newscaster.  Pretty good.  Have a good day.  Sharon

jane

Sharon...What a week you’ve had.  I hope it all settles down for you now.  Hubbard is going to be quite a change for your SIL.  I’d not heard of it before, but see it’s very small...population of 830 or so.  It’s in the central part of the state, apparently, and I’m in the NE.

Darlene...sounds like summer has come to Texas.  Be careful.

Alpiner...how are you doing without oxygen now?

Mary...we don’t seem to get bluebirds here in town....sometimes see them in the country.  Right now Baltimore Orioles, cardinals, goldfinches, and an indigo bunting are our colorful ones, with some colorful woodpeckers thrown in.

Sue....I’d do as you are thinking of....go to Garden Club only when a program of interest.  That woman would drive me away.

Still working on laundry.  I tried a walk, but joints rebelled, and I didn’t get far.  Maybe tomorrow.  It’s quite humid now and in mid 80s, so House is closed up and ac on.

Jeanne and GinnyAnn....hope you’re both ok.

SCFSue

Good afternoon, Buddies.  Olyne picked me up for SS and church.  I enjoyed both and was glad I could go.  This is a 2 game bridge week.  On Tuesday, I'll go to Azalea Place for my once monthly luncheon and bridge afterwards and Wednesday, that group will meet at Olyne's.  She had the Thursday group last week.  Did I tell you that I did talk to Terri yesterday?  She had a Shingles shot at her GP's office and is feeling much better--even went to an investment club meeting.

I made a sandwich and an apple salad for my lunch and ate it outside on my deck.  I have started reading a new library book (at least new to me) and will do more of that while it's pretty warm outside.  If it gets cooler around supper time, I'll probably walk at least around the block.

Have a nice Sunday, Every Buddy.
Sue

jane

We're having a lazy day.  Ray's cooking ....short ribs, bean soup, and meatloaf....and we'll get them into the freezer for quick meals later on.

It's just 60 today, so quite a change from the mid 80s of yesterday.  We also had thunderstorms overnight...rain was very much needed.  More tonight and tomorrow, I guess.

jane

SharonE

Jane, Milly lived in Belvidere all her life, so any change will be hard. However Belvidere was very small when shewas growing up. Bigger now with a Dodge plant.  The big change will be moving into a very small apt ad leaving her house that they bought when they were first married.

Last week was awful, but we will be going to Brian's on Friday, returning Monday. (Flying), i
I've been hurting a lot for the past week, but the weather has been so rainy, it's no wonder.. And supposed to continue all this week too!  I hope it is nice in IL.

How lucky you are that Ray cooks! Nice things for the freezer.  I made a tuna pasta salad for dinner tonight.  It sounded good and light.  I've also done 2 loads of laundry since we got home from church.

We had a lovely confirmation service + Pentecost. A nice finish to last week's chaos.

Sue, glad you were able to go to church today.  I play bridge on Wed.  and have my final eye appt tomorrow.  I finished my book last night and have to look around for another to start.

Jane, we never had many bluebirds in IN, but they are everywhere in SC.  I love them. However we don't have any Baltimore orioles except passing through..

Have a good week, everyone.  Sharon

alpiner1

Jane I've been off oxygen for several weeks now . I doing good but because of COPD & asthma I get short of breath still . This is an on going condition & will get worse with time .  I do what I can do & rest when I have a problem .

alpiner1

Yesterday I was on the freeway going 70mph on a 6% grade I had a flat tire .  I managed to drive to the off ramp & turned into a mini mart parking .  I called my husband & he came to my rescue , then took my car for a new tire . The tire was still under warranty , so he got a free replacement & paid $25 for a warranty on the new tire . Several people asked me if I needed help , its nice living in a small town !

maryz

alpiner, how scary!  And what great presence of mind and reflexes to get yourself safely to a place to stop.  I get shivers just thinking about it.

Sharon, I hope all goes better for you over the next week and your trip.  And that you get some good cards, too.

Sue, I wish good cards to you, too - both times.

jane, Yum, and hooray to have a cook in the family.  John cooked outside, and I cooked inside - never getting that mixed up.

We had some thunder this afternoon and about 15 minutes of rain, but it seems to have moved off now

Hope everybody has a good week!
"When someone you love dies, you never quite get over it.  You just learn how to go on without them. But always keep them safely tucked in your heart."

alpiner1

maryz   All I could think of was to get the car off the freeway .  It is very dangerous to simply pull over to the shoulder & wait for help to come .  As a friend said a driver on drugs or alcohol could have ran into my car ! I knew the tire was shot , so it wasn't my main concern .  Surviving was !

jane

Alpiner....good end to your tire situation!

Sharon...I join you in the awful pain this past week with the weather changes.  Rain again today.

We got the new Shingles shot this morning.  One pharmacy was out and the other had 2 shots...so down we went.  Our Clinic told us to go to pharmacy to get the shots.  Our Part D covered part of the cost. Pharmacist said they hope the shortage will ease by June.  This one is a two parter....a second shot 2-6 months after this first one.  We'd had the other back in 2006, so glad to get this new one now.

SCFSue

Good almost afternoon, Buddies.  Tim didn't come by for his usual Monday check up until after 10:30 and we had a good bit of paperwork to take care of.  So I was late eating lunch and after I get my Seniors & Friends visiting finished I'm going to lie down for a while with a new book.  I'm waiting now to finish one light load in the dryer and then I'll put 2 pairs of jeans in the dryer.  This might be the last time for heavy denim jeans this summer.

Alpiner, I'm glad you're off the oxygen for a while and VERY Thankful that you were not hurt when your tire went flat.  It was good that tire was still under warranty!

Mary, we haven't had rain yet, but it's been predicted as a possibility every day this week.  My flowers could use some, but are OK for a few days without it.  I haven't seen my mama and papa Cardinals today.  I have seen a squirrel hanging out under the feeder, though.  The cardinals just ignore him and come on under it and he gets out of their way.  I have a blue bird box back in my woodsy garden, but haven't seen any birds in there this year.

Jane, I got the new Shingles shot earlier this year.  I try to get every booster as Bob suffered greatly from the Shingles when he had the last reoccurrence of his cancer.  My grandmother used to get them, too, when she was in her 80's and was miserable with them.  No shots then.  My insurance plus the military supplement Bob paid into covers the cost.

Have a nice day, Every Buddy.  Sharon, I'm playing bridge on Tuesday and Wednesday this week.  Tuesday is lunch at the retirement center with bridge afterwards and Wednesday is the usual group and we'll play at Olyne's.
