Oldiesmann: Finally got the AmazonBot situation under control. I basically changed some server settings to tell AmazonBot that it's not allowed to access anything on the site. That should fix the speed issues we've been experiencing lately

alpiner, sorry about the precancerous place, but the early catch is good. And the freezing isn't too bad.

Darlene, can't believe you're around 80*.

Sharon, I had to laugh at your "French" showing up in your Spanish class. Year ago, when we were hosting exchange students from Venezuela, I took a Freshman Spanish course at the community college. I was amazed and how often a French word would pop up when I was trying to translate - and I hadn't used French since my multiple years when I was in high school and college. Funny.

jane, I just heard on the news about your wonderful governor. Sorry about that. But ours isn't much better. Oh, well...  Stay warm!

Our Gov. refuses to Mandate masks, but the CDC has said that wearing two masks is much better than one.

alpiner1

maryz  I asked about the spot because it looked like the early stages of another skin cancer I had removed a couple of years ago .  That one was huge & the dr. removed a gob of tissue  I still have an indentation where it had been .  I have had others frozen too .

jane

I've been double masking for quite a while.  It started when I got to see and hold the new baby in the family.  I have a tendency to sneeze in cold weather, and being able to throw away the inside paper mask is a plus.

-2 temp this morning.  Brrrr!

Good morning...good idea Jane.....have a great weekend buddies

maryz

Had a great visit with Margaret and Jean. They brought a delicious lunch from a little local seafood place - crab cakes with huge chunks of crab, spicy shrimp - Yum! And they stayed for about an hour and a half, rather than the prescribed 30 minutes. Nobody else was scheduled, so they just stayed.  :smitten:

Mary, lucky you--family visit and seafood lunch! Mary, I took 4 yrs of French in HS and then took both my 1st yr in college. The prof told me he was going to give me half credit in each for my Spanish class because of my French influence, so I dropped the Spanish.  Some people can compartmentalize different languages, but I'm not one of them. I can read Spanish and understand simple Spanish, but I run into trouble when I try to speak it. Of course, I continued with my French through my Masters and taught it for 20 years, so I suspect I shall continue to have problems.

Jane, yuck on your low temps.  John actually put Bunny's coat on her for her walkie a while ago in our 40 degree temps. The coat was a gift from a neighbor because it was too big for her little Yorkie and perfect for Bunny.

I've done 3 loads of laundry and finished my 3rd recipe book. Will do the 4th after dinner. We'll take them to the PO on Mon.

I double mask too.

Hi Darlene. Hope you have a nice weekend too.

Today is Marilyn's birthday: HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MARILYN! :dog2:   :party2:

The midwest is a tad chilly today!  :2funny:

It was -19 this morning when I woke up!  But, it's warmed up and is now -5.  Nope, I only went out to take some seed to my cardinals.   :coolsmiley:

I've been reading and watching Hallmark Movies and Mysteries and now some hockey.  Yep, I'll watch the SuperBowl game later.
 :idiot2:
Yes, our Idiot Governor still has stayed with NO restrictions on masks, social distancing, number of people anywhere...indoors or outside.  It'll be interesting to see if she just did this for today, or this is our future.   :uglystupid2:

SharonE

Jane, that is terrible about your governor's lack of mandates!  Also terrible on your temps!  I have several Hallmark movies and mysteries on my DVR that I dip into from time to time.

If any of you know who Marcel Marceau, the French mime, was, there is a movie on Showtime called "Resistance", which tells about his early life through WW II.  It is pretty depressing, but I found out a lot about him. He was actually a hero and won the French Legion of Honor for all the Jewish children he saved or helped to save.  I saw him perform at IU once back in the early 80's or maybe earlier. I had taken a group of French students down to see him.  Amazing!  John found and watched the movie and saved it for me, so I watched it this afternoon.

I didn't get my 4th recipe book done, so need to go do it now.

Hope you all are having a nice day and enjoying the game if that is your choice. Naturally, I opted out.  Stay safe.  Sharon

jane

Nobody seems to be out and about today.  This morning there were some pickup trucks going by with snowblowers, etc. but everybody seems to be wherever they're going for the big game.

Stay safe and healthy,

jane

maryz

We got about 2" of snow overnight, just on the grass, not on the streets. We've had heavy cloud cover, so no warming or sunshine to do any melting. And the temps stayed around freezing all day. Fortunately, nothing like jane's weather in Iowa.

Don't know what I'll watch tonight. I mostly watch CBS, and that's been Super Bowl stuff all day long.  I don't do football stuff, but I'll find something.

Stay warm - and may your favorite team win!
"When someone you love dies, you never quite get over it.  You just learn how to go on without them. But always keep them safely tucked in your heart."

jane

I've been out and got my haircut and by the grocery for a couple items and picked up some fast food for lunch at the drive through so home now to finish up laundry and relax.  I do see people still wearing masks, though a few in the grocery (Amish couple and another older man) were not.  I'm still wearing mine, but I'm not going out.

It's still bitterly cold here and to continue for next ten days.

Supposedly the health care providers will contact us, their patients, when vaccine is available.  I bet that'll be months for now.  The providers say they don't know how much vaccine is coming or when it's coming.  They say they know people are frustrated.

jane

maryz

jane, have you called your county Health Department? They might be able/willing to give you some information. I got a text from my HD this morning, giving me the time and location on Friday for my #2 shot.  :)

It's warmed up to around 50 today, and the snow is all gone (sorry, jane!).

I hope the game-watchers enjoyed the game last night. I watched stuff on PBS (Miss Scarlet and the Duke and All Creatures Great and Small).

Hi Gals. Finally got the recipe books in the mail this AM. Had to put them in Priority boxes, so it cost a bunch, but they're worth it. I also have Bunny's surgery/dental cleaning scheduled for the 26th. I'll be glad when that's over.

Jane, I'm glad you could get out and run your errands today in spite of the cold. It's supposed to be about 50 here, but still feels cold to me. No snow here. Sure hope you get a shot soon.

Mary, I watched 2 Hallmark movies I had taped. I'm a CBS watcher too.

Hi to everyone. Stay warm and stay safe. Sharon

JeanneP

I just can't believe that some people getting into th 40s and 60s. Here it did not get about 8 deg and tonight will be 7 deg. below. What a day.  My pipes all frozen and so no water. I have a man suppose to come in the morning and see what can be done. Says lots all over town with frozen pipes. Some told me have a 4 day waiting list.
We also have 2 ft of snow and more tonight. Good thing for waht is down as I went out and brought 2 big kitchen garbage holders of snow. Will be able to use one bathroom and maybe was a few dishes when it melts. Can't stand dishes in sink/
Now i got my first shot on Jan. 16 and they Called me Sunday and gave me the date of Feb. 19th. for the 2nd shot.  Be glad to get it as it does make a person feel safer.  I still am going to stick to the 2 mask, staying away from people and not visiting.  Don't really think they are 100 % as to what this shot is going to do. Took a long time before they were happy with what the Flu Shots did. Even now it works at only 75% can still get the flu but not has bad.
They tell you later on this coved shot not to take Ibrahim tablets for 2 weeks prior to the first one and 3 weeks after. Looks like it would be listed on the TV more. Also so prescriptions not recommended when taking these shots.I just take the blood pressure one so its O.K.

Maryz. Sounds like your place is doing great. I have not yet been able to visit my friend in hers. Been a year now and not even family can go in.  Hers is quite a large place so maybe your is smaller. She was having a hard time remembering people prior and so I am afraid that she will have dementia much worse when I do see her.

I am trying to keep a stiff uper lip as they use to say. (I  never did figure that saying out). Reading a lot. not much TV as it seems like the are pushing more Commercials now than shows. All my Tech stuff need working on. Fact think I really do need a new Ipad. Lot can't be done on my 5 years old one now. My Desktop W10 really messed up colour wise. Been playing with it and made it worse.
Even with all the mess we have I still getting at least 5 Robot calls . Have had 4 today.  Even my Mobile gets them.

So all stay well as one can. Hope for a early spring. Last year went so fast and now this one seems to be doing the same.

Night all. At least I am getting lots of sleep.

Gosh I had forgotten that I put the picture on after getting my short hair cut. I think It is showing up here.  She really messed up with a razor at the back. Had a big hole. Been taking  lots of Biotin to help it and now it is lot better. Will wait awhile now before I get another cut.  The man I want to do it is really busy as he only opens 3 days. I will wait...

What are Ibrahim tablets?

jane

Good to see you back, Jeanne.  Sorry about the frozen pipes!

Hi, Tome!

Mary...our Public Health works with the hospital.  I'm on the list to receive emails and phone calls when they have a covid shot clinic.  According to npr, Iowa is now LAST in distributing the vaccine!  And NO restrictions, according to our Governor.

Sharon...hurrah on getting your cookbooks finished!

Dangerous cold and wind chills continue...and I'm inside with heat turned up!

Stay safe and healthy!

Jane

SharonE

Jeanne, good to see your post. I really like your short hair. I read recently that Biotin is not a good supplement to take. I used to take it for my nails, but it didn't help their strength. I sure didn't need it for hair growth. I'm sorry for your frozen pipes. Didn't you run your water when the temps plunged? Be careful that none of the pipes burst. We had that once in IN. Glad your 2nd shot is scheduled. Ours is too.

Yes, Jane, I'm relieved to get the recipe books done. I wanted to do them, but most anything is a chore for me these days. The Dr was here a few minutes ago to check my vitals per the hospital's instructions. All fine. BP 120/62.

Bible Study this afternoon.

The center is having a special Valentine's dinner Friday evening in the dining room with prime rib!! I got us signed up stat as there wasn't sitting for everyone.  Nice to have a special dinner without having to go anywhere, which we wouldn't do.

Stay warm everyone and stay safe.  Sharon

jane

How nice to have a special dinner right there, Sharon!

I just ducked out, looking like Nanook of the North, to put out some feed for my cardinals.
It's COLD out there, so I did NO dilly-dallying!   :coolsmiley:

Nothing planned for today but to sit and read.

Stay safe and healthy,

LazyJane

maryz

Good to see Jeanne back with us. Sorry you're so cold and frozen. Our place is pretty small. I think the maximum in assisted living is 35 or so, plus about 12 in the Memory area. Some of our residents do still drive, but most don't.

I get my second shot (Moderna) on Friday.

Your dinner sounds great, Sharon. I hope your prime rib is good - it's not easy to get it right.

jane, glad you got your babies fed. Mine have gone hungry for a while. I hope Margaret can get them fed this week.

Marilyn, how are things going out there?

Hi to Darlene and Alpiner, too - and others checking in.
"When someone you love dies, you never quite get over it.  You just learn how to go on without them. But always keep them safely tucked in your heart."

JeanneP

Mary. Yours is a small place. I would say they are better. Now the one my friend is in is 3 seperate big buildings. One for Retired people with good health  but need assistant living. Another area like Condos.. then Memory care for dementia. This is where my friend is. I would say maybe over 275 people if not more..Not a place I would care to live in.Lot of people do.

I have a man working on my water lines right now. Poor guy. It is 7 deg. out there. Having to replace one 60 ft water line.
JeanneP

maryz

Jeanne, I really like it here. It's great having no worries about maintenance/cleaning or food prep/buying, etc. For now, I'm pretty close to "independent" - don't use the nursing services. But it's there when and if I do need it.

Another futile attempt to get a vaccine appt.  They only had 160 doses and ONLY way is to call a number over and over.  I did multiple times and only get busy signal and then message that appts are filled.  Very frustrating.

Another cold day with high in single digit, and even colder to come this weekend.   Stay safe and healthy,

Jane

SharonE

Mary, your facility is really small. We have about 300 people in Independent living + assisted, nursing, & dementia care. However, by us being in a villa, we are safer and not bothered by lots of people unless we want to be. Then we go to the main building. My main disappointment is not having a place for my bird feeders. I miss my feathered friends. I see them from time to time on the balcony or in the woods, but it's hard to identify them in the woods from the distance.

Jane, I'm sorry you weren't successful getting an appt for the vaccine. Do you have redial on your phone?  That is so handy for such a situation and what I used to get our reservation for the Valentine's dinner.

I finally got an appt to get my hair cut for next Wed. No openings this week. They just reopened the salon after they shut it down after the Covid outbreak a month or so ago.  So, I am really shaggy.

Hi to all. Stay warm and stay safe!  Sharon

jane

Sharon...yes, I do have redial.  I'll wait for the next batch next week.  Not any other choices.   It's odd to hear of things just opening where you are.  We're ALL open...everything...no restrictions...no social distancing...no limit on restaurants, bars, businesses, no masks...and no vaccine.

jane

maryz

Sharon, the size is one of the things I like about this place. You get to know all of the staff - and they know all of the residents well. This is a smaller, mostly rural county and community. But there is an unusual amount of professional people in the area. Arnold Engineering (an Air Force test facility) is the primary employer (where Margaret and her husband worked for their whole careers).  Anyhow, it works for me.

jane, keep trying - you'll get that shot soon (I hope). As will the rest of y'all.

Sorry Jeanne I can't read your posts. they are too small. If you nade it bolde I could read it.

I finally got through to our local health and wellness office and was to to sign up on line and that  this county hs not received anymore  vaccine doses. I had signed up on line when I was eligible for the 1A shots along with healthcare workers and live-in caregivers. I told them that and that I am 81, will  no more vaccines available was the an swer. Damn!!!!!

maryz

So sorry, Marilyn.  Keep trying!
