Heard on the news tonight there is a dam in North Carolina in danger of being broken by the flood waters, adding enormous property damage and suffering down there.  I pray the waters don't get high enough to do that.

Yes, Sue, Greg is Our Anne's husband of 46 years, and we love him to bits.  I have recently, for some 8 years, done his books.

Back in the early nineties I helped out my son in law Steve, too.  I came over here from Virginia on weekends, at his request,  and took a week's vacation, as well, and uncovered a humongous embezzlement his trusted bookkeeper had perpetrated on him and his company.  Too, too sad.  We were all devastated, and she was someone I had liked.  A lot.  Steve is Our Debi's husband of 38 years.  He is retired now, and has Parkinson's.

She was fired instantly, and, of course, denied all.  She hired (but never paid!) a CPA to do an audit and prove she had embezzled less than half of the amount I came up with.  The audit was done.  The CPA agreed with my findings TO THE PENNY.  And it was a very large sum of money.  I think the woman could not believe that I had uncovered all of her tricks.

In the late eighties, I worked in Greg's office one summer for several weeks, helping him get things reorganized.  That was a fun time.

Yes, I am very fond of all of my sons in law, and we are a very close family.

SharonE

Hi Gals, a quick note for now as I have to leave shortly for my hearing appt.

Mary, I'm glad you have all your prep work done for your surgery and we will be praying for a successful outcome & quick recovery on the 20th and beyond.  I'm so glad Jean will be able to be with you.

MP, prayers for Greg too. Sounds serious.  You must be quite the accountant to discover the embezzlement.  Did he ever get his money back?

Sue, John is learning the laundry just in case I am no longer able to do it.  He is just realizing that I took care of everything in the house + finances all these years and he needs to learn how to pick up the reins.

Jeanne, I agree with you that most men of our generation left everything to the wife.  John certainly did, but our son and sons-in-law have been very good about helping with everything, including changing diapers.  Glad you're getting all set for winter. Hope it isn't a bad one for you.

I put our HVAC on auto yesterday.  Our high was about 62 and over night it got down into the 40's.

Marilyn, did you get an estimate on your mirror yet?  Maybe you can find one in a junk yard. Brian used to find bits and pieces he needed for his car there at a much reduced cost.  You were very llucky not to have a bad accident.

Jane, enjoy your lovely fall weather. We are.  We're just feeling so bad for all the coastal communities that are still flooded and expecting more after the rivers above them crest.

HI to all. Gotta leave.  Sharon

joyous

MaryZ: Yes, my son, dtr., and grandson are still flooded out and working to rebuild (and get along w/Fema.  >:(
Each one of them was completely flooded out and has been for about 2 months----lost everything.

Joy, such an experience is just beyond imagining.  Losing EVERYthing!  The first thing I think of is photographs, the second thing is books.  The third is all of the shoes and clothing that would need to be bought.  And the paperwork involved.  I mean, good grief, if you OWN a home, and have a mortgage on it, you have to go on making those mortgage payments every month, even though you are reduced to nothing but a debris covered piece of land!
I have been feeling really, really bad for you and yours.  Do please, if you can bear to, keep us in the know as to how things go along.  It would be a good experience for us to know what total loss is like.  So many, many tens of thousands of folks all over this nation have been suffering such sudden wiping out of their assets in the past few years, what with the tremendous increase in violent storms of every type.
Today would have been my second husband's 81st birthday and my third husband's 93rd.  I remember many happy times with each, but the last was the Great Love of My Life.

JeanneP

Its warming up now today. Not in the mood to stay home. So making choices. There are 2 movies on I want to see.  Birth of a Nation and The Girl on the train.
think will be Birth of a nation first.  And if still in the mood will pop into the next one The girl on the Train  Take a bottle water, Banana and candy Bar.  Dinner I have in the freezer.
I am so tired of the Politics on TV . Can't wait for it to be over. Never have I seen such goings on with picking a President ever since I came into the country.

I have never voted. Meant to on Clinton and then Obama. but still not registered and would not do it this year for sure.
Did I see a Priest on yesterday telling Catholics that if they did not feel right voting for Pres. Can just leave that spot blank. Vote for who they want in others running for office. Not to feel guilty.  Maybe they should allow the President now in to stay for awhile longer.  Doubt he wants to.  What must the rest of the world be thinking on this.?

Need to take my new glasses back also. Not working for me on the Reading part.

Thats my day.....

Mary.  I hope you knee Operation goes well.  Then I can let my daughter settle on a time and get hers done.  She keeps putting it off.

Good to see,  that number three,
was the great love of your life !

Jeanne, tell your daughter not to wait "forever".  The worse the knee (or hip) gets, the harder the rehab and recovery.  That's why I'm not waiting any longer.  Good luck to her, too.

Darling Sandy Dapph,
Love is not something you go out hunting for, that's for sure.  Lots of wasted hours, if not real trouble, if you take that roadway.  Best keep to yourself off the beaten path and speedy interstates.  Love bumps into you when you Least expect it!  Indeed, often when your mind does not even harbor thoughts of expectation!
I was 74 when I wed my prince.
And we lived happily every single moment, if not ever afterwards.  I cannot believe he has been gone over ten years now!

Yes Mom,
I know...

I gave up the "search"  a few years
before I reached  50 ! (close to 25 years ago..)

But I always enjoy it when I hear that
couples (of all sorts) meet  (or
re meet) and share their lives
together,  for what ever time
they have left together,  in their elder
years.

It doesn't seem possible that it has
been 10 years since  Bob passed.

good morning  Sherry yest I got the estimate, it will be $303.  with labor, the labor is only 44. So next week when the new one comes in it will be done in a jiffy. He did find  a used one but it wasn't the right color, so we are getting the new one rather have to paint on. Mine is also heated as well as electric and houses one of the blinkers.

I have been trying to reach my sister in law in Wilmington NC and no answer on either phone. Have any of you  in that area heard anything about Wilmington NC.

Sue it is so refreshing to see your long posts once again.

I remember the news saying Wilmington got pretty hard hit.  Do not remember the details, but you can probably Google Wilmington NC Matthew and read their local papers.

GinnyAnn

It looks beautiful outside today.  I haven't been out yet.  My mouth is hurting and I am a bit light headed. We had one of those incidences of a large bleep from our electric service. Well it got one of our 'minders' to bleeping. Ray is volunteering at the hospital, so I have had to put up with it.  The way my balance isn't I sure can't do it.

maryz

Ginny Ann, I hope your dental problems settle down soon.  How annoying about the "bleeping" -- I hope that get fixed quickly, too.

Sandy, it's always good to see you checking in.

We had a food committee meeting this afternoon.  The food has started to improve with the new chef who started last month.  And he does sound like he has good ideas and plans.  So we're all hoping this works out.  But now, I'm sitting out on the deck with the laptop.  The weather is glorious, so I'll just wallow in it for a while.

SCFSue

Good Afternoon, Buddies.  I had a busy morning--up early to get ready for Circle meeting.  I had to present the lesson today on the book of Matthew.  Our lesson guide had some good suggestions and some of the members were ready to discuss the material.  When I came home, I got into my old jeans and a flannel shirt, had a light lunch and then took a lie down for a while.  I went outside to finish planting my pansies and violas.  When I was almost finished, Lue's son who is the airplane pilot had been over to give some paperwork to his sister who lives in Lue's home.  He saw me tending my flowers and came over before  going back to Georgia.  He and his wife brought their 3 children over pretty frequently to spend a few days with Lue.  She loved teaching Elizabeth how to use a sewing machine and also always made cookies with the 3 kids.  The younger 2 are boys.  Now that I've finished planting, my flower bed near my side entrance looks pretty nice.

Mary, our weather is lovely, too, but we sure need some rain!  It rained once in June while I was living at the assisted living, but only for about 10 minutes.  Nothing since then.  It sounds like your new chef could be a real winner--I hope so.  I know you'll be glad Jean will be able to stay with you while your are recuperating.

GinnyAnn, I'm sorry your mouth is hurting.  And I'm glad to hear that you are being cautious about the bleeping.  Better to put up with the racket than needing to recover from a fall.  I hope Ray comes home soon.

MaryPage, thanks for the link to the flooding in Wilmington.  These recent natural disasters have been pretty awful everywhere.  It makes me wonder just what is causing it--or if I just can't remember worse storms!

Hi Sandy.  It's good to see you here today.  How's the weather in Portland?  I'm thinking lots of pretty leaves on the trees and falling down.  BTW, your new "grand" is a beauty!

Marilyn, I'm always surprised to learn that a small part for a car can cost so much.  I guess I shouldn't be though, as car prices seem to be through the roof these days.

Jeanne, I'm definitely going to vote--but might have to write in someone else for President. I'm not enthralled with either candidate.   :tickedoff:

Joy, I'm sorry to hear that your family is still having so many problems with the flooding.  And especially that working with the Fema folks is not helpful OR timely.

Hi Darlene.  I just saw your message.  I've had a good day--coolish, but sunny--and happy I have the new plants in the flower bed.

Have a nice evening, Buddies.
Sue

Hi Sue .. The weather here in Portland is
true to form for Fall....   It is getting cooler and
windier as the days go on.     Soon all the beautiful
colors will be gone as the leaves start to fall
from the trees.

"Fi"  is progressing normally, thank goodness.

now the only "baby" in our family.

Hi MaryZ!   I wish you well with your up
coming surgery....   I am glad to see that
you have help coming to stay with you.
That should make all the difference while you
recuperate!

Have a great Evening,  Everyone!

A cool 50 degrees and rain on the way....frost predicted for tonight.

I'm about ready to leave for lunch and a couple hours of bridge.

Have a good Wednesday.

Hi Gals, I didn't get back in yesterday as it was a stressful one. My GPS stopped working so I got lost twice on the way to my hearing appt and then again had to stop for directions to get home. I think I am going to call Beltone and see if they will service my hearing aids and do the tests in the future. They are close by.

Marilyn, $300+ sounds like a lot for a mirror, but  I know that parts are ridiculously expensive. Hope you can get it replaced quickly.  You asked about Wilmington and MP gave you some good links, so hope you found out what you wanted.  Electricity is out in much of the Carolina's coastal areas and probably cell towers as well, so don't assume the worst. Just keep trying.

I just went down to Ms Frances' to check on her since she didn't answer when I called. She was fine, but cold and didn't know how to adjust the heat, so I was glad I went.  She had a growth removed from just below her jaw a couple weeks ago and the path report came back cancerous, so she is going to have to go in for more extensive removal of the spot. Her daughter is flying in to be with her and I'm so glad.  I would have been glad to go with her, but I imagine it will need care afterwards and I wouldn't be there for that.

It sounds like everyone is enjoying lovely fall weather now.  We are too.

Mary, I'm glad the food is improving and I think it is wonderful that you have a deck to go out on and enjoy the lovely days.

Darlene, glad it's cooling down for you tool.

MP, are your geraniums still flourishing?  HOpe your weather is great too.

Has anyone heard from Molly?  I don't think she has posted in a month and I"m worried about her.

Sue, I bet your garden looks lovely with all your new pansies and violas.  Good for you for getting it all done.  I haven't bought any yet. My flowers in front have rejuvenated with all the rain & cooler weather. My red hibiscus is blooming beautifully and so are all the other flowers.  I'll probably do my pansies in Nov.

Jane, frost already?  Ugh!  Have fun at bridge.

John's birthday is Friday and we're going out to dinner with friends to a fish place.

All the news here.  Sharon

Marilyn

Good morning everyone. I think the reason that mirror is so expensive is because of the electronics  within, ( the blinker and the heat.)

I took Freckles to my hospice class yesterday, She is so well behaved and I am trining her to be my Service Dog and she did great, she never moved from her spot unless I said it was OK. I don't let anyone just come to pet her they had to ask first and she didn;'t go up to anyone unless I told her to "go say hello", that is something we arew working on because she has always tended to go up to everyone.  In public places if I am sitting she is to lay at my feet. If I am standing she is to sit at my side. If I seem to be upset she is to jump into my lad and distract me. I don't know if I ever mentioned that I have PTSD it is a side effect  of previous domestic abuse, (a long time ago.)

SharonE

Freckles sounds like such a smart dog.  I hope she works out as a service dog and helps you with your problems.  ((((Marilyn))))    Sharon

JeanneP

MaryP.  Yes it does sound like 3rd. Time lucky for you.  Now what age was husband number one when you lost him? I met some really nice men from age of 35 but just never wanted to marry again. Got so use to my independence after the 2 daughter grew up and married. Now all the men other than the one who was 9 years younger have passed away.

Gosh. they said nice and sunny but I hear the rain on my windows.  Weather men...

.I don't think they know any more than we do.
Did you see where Donald Trump told people to make sure that they went out and voted NOVEMBER 28.  should have said the 8th.  Now the TV making fun of that.
Now the ones not happy who are Republican seem to be wanting Trump to step down and let the Man who he picked for Vice President to take his chance. I had never heard of him.

Can't make up my mind what to do today. For sure not housework. I thought that it wasn't going  to warm out but not bad. Talked my Yard grass cutting man into cutting down the big Hosta's. They really need thinning out although they do fill up the whole area in Summer.
I know I need to take some DVD back to the library. I have gotten into the habit again now of going out to see movies on the Big screen. And boy are they big. We have some big movie Theatres here in town. Each showing about 10 different one . Seat so large and Plush. Some serving beer and wine and snacks now. I sneak my own in in my purse.  I go to the 1:30pm shows and usually just about 8 people in the whole place.
I saw "Bridget Jones Baby" last week so cute.  This week so far I have been to "Birth of A nation" About the slave uprising of Matt Turner.  True Story. Read the book of about 20 years ago its good. I enjoyed the movie but it is showing the cruelty back then.   Still want to see "The Girl on the Train". Sort of a strange Book. Want to see what the movie like.

Went and changed those new glasses I got last week.  I just use for reading but Doctor gave me a new prescription to  add a little to distance for driving.  Not ever kept glasses on only when reading. I didn't like the ones last week so they are making a new pair a little different.  Will give them a try. This time just a Bifocal not the 3 way.

I am trying to set up the Texting on my mobile phone also. I don't even want to use it but seems soon one will have to have it on as now seems its all businesses and everything else are saying. We will text you. And you have to have a 5 digit to allow this.  I also did not have my Voice mail set up right. Got to work on this.
Now it is really storming so looks like will be stuck in the house anyway. so can play

JeanneP

maryz

Marilyn, how great that Freckles will be able to help you personally - as well as the good you do together.  John's niece helps train golden labs (the puppy/socialization part) to be service animals, and loves doing it.  I've seen a dog working with a woman with a seizure disorder, and it was great.

Jeanne, wish you could share some of your rain with me.  We need it so much.

My big (and only) accomplishment today was to vote.  The county election commission comes here so residents can vote.  The state early voting starts on the 19th, so this is essentially an absentee ballot.  I'm just glad to have it done before my surgery.
"When someone you love dies, you never quite get over it.  You just learn how to go on without them. But always keep them safely tucked in your heart."

I have just had great good news: my beloved son in law Greg had quadruple by-pass surgery today, and it was a success and his heart is beating much stronger and he is now resting quietly.  My daughter Anne and the 3 granddaughters (grown women, and one a cardiac nurse), Tracy, Paige & Melissa, who have been there all day, will be able to see him in about an hour.  He  will not be awake, but they just want reassurance.
I mailed my absentee ballot last Friday.

maryz

Wonderful news, MaryPage.  Huzzah!!!  I hope Jean can report such good news next week.

I went out to the University club today for lunch and bridge.  Helen, our 97 y.o. member wanted us to meet there instead of her home.  I had the special salad with strawberries and pecans with salmon and a yummy bread pudding for desert.  The service was very poor--which is unusual.  However, I noticed that most of the employees were trying to set up for a large reception at their covered pavilion outside the dining room.  Only one server was working in the dining room and we had 9 at our table and there were at least 3 other tables with 4 diners.  So it took us a long time to get our meals and then eat them.  We did manage to finish by 1:30 and went into another room to play bridge.

I got some good, some bad cards, so didn't win any money, but I enjoyed playing.

The weather is beautiful here, sunny and cooler, but NO RAIN!  We haven't had more than 3" total since April.  My Azaleas are suffering.  I just don't have enough oomph to drag the sprinklers into the back garden.  I just keep hoping it will rain--and soon.  There is none in the forecast now.

I hope you've all had a good day.  MaryPage, hurray for the good news about Greg.  I'm sending up prayers for a full and speedy recovery.

Sleep well, Buddies.

Fantastic news, Mary Page.  It made me happy, starting the day :)

The Holiday 2016 catalog put out by National Geographic has a new item listed on page 63.  Yep, a Mexican Train set.  Only being that this is National Geographic, they have added a little historical bit which the normal instructions that come with the game do not (at least, mine do not) include.  Here t'is:
"Despite its Mexican nickname, the roots of the game date to 14th century China."
Anyway, you may have a set for $59.95, plus tax, shipping & handling.  I remember I bought mine about 10 years ago at Tuesday Morning and paid about $29.95, plus tax.

jane

MP...good news on Greg.

Pricey set of Mexican Train. We've bought sets at WalMart for $19.95 and maybe a bit more that had a circular thingy and an annoying "train whistle" with a battery that a winner could press!  :2funny:  we see them pften at the huge outdoor market in Donna-Weslaco, TX as well as lots of extra  plastic trains which apparently get lost by some.

We had 12 for bridge yesterday and I came in 4th or so, so got my .25 back.  Our numbers will be diminishing now...several gals leaving for FL and TX at the end of the month, etc.

Mary....Friends had signed up for the Mississippi River cruise and they were called and said the route had changed...no more St. Paul to NO.  They'll fly to Nashville, then the Cumberland River back to the Mississippi and then on to NO.  Flooding and high river up here means ship can't get under the bridges.  They were very disappointed as they wanted to see the leaf colors on the upper river.

Beautiful cool day here...35 now and there was frost on the roof.  High only into 50s.  We may need to make a trip to a Lowe's or Home Depot for a new porch light.  It looks like a good day to do that.

Jane
