Jeanne, I'm sorry about the fall and your head.  Take care and if you get dizzy, call your doctor.

Darlene, I am so glad you didn't have to evacuate.  Has the worst part passed now or will you have rain for several more days?  Take care and stayed tuned to your weather channel.

I'm off to watch Doc Martin on PBS and then off to bed.  Olyne is picking me up at 9:30 for SS and church tomorrow.

Sleep well.
Sue

SharonE

Darlene, so glad everything is safe at your house. I imagine you can use the rain where you are--if it isn't too much.

Sue, glad Jon has moved a little north and out of the flood plains.  NO has really had a hard time of it between hurricanes and broken dams and pumps.

Marilyn, you need to take a selfie of your new do and post it.

It's 1:00 and I'm still awake. Went to bed at 11:30.  Just took another half of melatonin and have a cup of sleepytime tea.

Lori's younger son, Scott, who just turned 25 and is ready to move to NYC to get his masters at NYU just announce d that he and his girlfriend decided to get married last weekend!!  He wanted her to come with him to NY and she wouldn't do it without a commitment, so I guess he decided he wanted her enough to commit! I think they should just have gotten engaged and waited till he finished his masters, but no one asked me. It was all over before any of the family knew about it.  She is from WA state and they were married there with her family in attendance.  I hope it works out.  She seems like a nice girl but she hasn't finished college yet due to lack of $$$$. If he does get his PhD, she may feel under-educated.

Well, I need to finish my tea and see if I can get to sleep if I want to go to church tomorrow.  Sharon

maryz

Jeanne - glad you didn't get hurt any worse.  We all have to be so careful about not falling.  Be sure to report any symptoms to your doctor.

Darlene - glad you're out of the worst of Harvey.  Reports from Victoria to Houston are horrible.  My friend in Houston write that she has 4 1/2" of water in their house.  I don't know how they're dealing with it.  I hope to hear more before too long.

Sharon, sorry you were up so late.  I must say that I slept with only one potty break until 7, and then slept in the chair for 1 1/2 hours after breakfast.  I hope you can get a good night's sleep tonight.

I just finished watching An American in Paris, one of my all-time favorites.  Margaret just called and they're planning to bring my car back to me tonight. I hope that works out.

It sounds from what I can find as if Corpus /Rockport and north to Houston got it bad and then on to LA.

I hope Joy is OK and Jeanne's family in Houston.

It sounded as if SPI escaped any damage. I read Port Isabel had closed their shelters on Friday and re-opened the causeway to the Island when the storm went north.  I think the damage was north of Port Mansfield...and up to Corpus.

Great weekend in Mpls.  Looking forward now to a trip in Oct to their new home in WI.  The traffic in Mpls is bad for us...so will be glad to have finished with that!   :2funny:

jane

My friend in Houston just e-mailed that the water in their house had been up to 10" deep, but was now down to 8".  They are currently staying put - as advised by local authorities.

Not heard from my Houston grandsons or from My daughter yet.  I don't like to be Emailing them or trying on the pHone. I know the will call when things calm down a little.  I didn't realize that Houston was in for such a lot of rain as it is usually so dry in the summer and this year they have had more rain than we have.  We are in a Drought at the moment.

I haven't had air-conditioning since late Friday night--and my house was HOT Saturday and Sunday.  I didn't realize the unit outside my house had quit--and finally put in a call to my electrician/AC guy this morning early.  He wasn't in yet, but the answering service called and told me they'd tell him as soon as he came in.  It's after 9:00 now and no phone call, but I know he'll call and show up sometime soon.  Fortunately it's over cast and cooler this morning.  I slept last night with windows open, but have closed them already as the heat will come in soon.

Tim will probably stop by about 10:00 as he usually does on Mondays.  I hope he'll be here when Chris comes as he (Tim) will want to help me decide what to do about getting a new unit.  It's hooked into my furnace which is in a sub-basement under the house.  I think they'll take out this one and put in a new outside.  $$$$ coming up and out!

Not much going on here other than that.  I'd like to get out for my walk as it's cool, but am afraid to leave the house before Chris calls.

Have a good day, Buddies.
Sue

SharonE

Jane, I'm glad to hear that SPI didn't get much if any damage.  It is so hard to predict what's going to happen with a hurricane.  We were lucky when we were in HH, although I worried a lot. They did get hit and had a lot of damage from last year's hurricane.  Glad too that you won't have to go to Minneapolis anymore. Is their new place in WI closer to you?  John is from Rockford, IL, so went to WI quite a bit. Our granddaughter, Joc, is in Minneapolis. I imagine our visits with her will be at her mom's in IN.  MI is just too far from SC.

Mary, I do hope the car works and things get back to normal for you. Also hope your friend's house isn't too damaged. I love "An American in Paris" also.

Jeanne, I apologize for not commenting on your fall. That was awful. I'm glad that you were able to get to the ER for care and that there was no serious ddamage.  Hope your daughter is weathering the storm safely.

I did manage to get to SS & church yesterday in spite of being up half the night. I really wanted to go because our good friends and pew mates were there for the last time yesterday. They are moving to a retirement center in Orangeburg.  I did take a nap yesterday afternoon of an hour or two unplanned in my chair.

I fixed my shrimp Greek pasta for dinner last night. It was so good. I hadn't fixed it for a while.

Sue, hope you had a nice day yesterday and that things are cooling down in AL as they are here--at least for now. Oops, just saw your post on your AC.  I hope it just needs freeon or something inexpensive.

Darlene, glad to hear that you escaped any damage.

Joy, hope you aren't being deluged.

Hi Marilyn. Hope you're having a good day.

Sharon

jane

Jeanne....any lingering after effects of your fall?  Those can be so dangerous at our age, unfortunately. As the doc said, get rid of that stool. I also hope you've heard from your daughter.

Sue...seems to be the time to replace AC!

Sharon...is that gizmo they implanted working for you?

Darlene...any rain from Harvey your way?

We were both very tired last night after a weekend away with people up much longer than we're used to and eating foods we're not used to, but it was great to see the Don and Pat and their boys and wives...and dogs.

Sharon...their place is in rural WI and about the same distance from us...more two lane highways than the 4 we used to get to Mpls, but lots less traffic, I know.  If I had to live in or near a large city, Mpls would be my choice.  Lots to do there and the drivers are much more polite than around Chicago, for instance.

Now to try and get a walk in before the heat and humidity return and get the laundry caught up.

Ray's gone to the grocery store and out to the farm where we buy our sweet corn. That'll be coming to an end soon, so need a bit more before then.

When he goes golfing, I'm going to run to WalMart and to the plumber's to drop off a check.

This morning I ordered a battery for this laptop from Amazon.  My niece said she ordered one for her Mac and it works fine.  I figured I'd give it a try for $34.00 and see if it'll charge.  Less than trying to take it to a repair shop somewhere and a lot less than buying a new computer right now.

jane

maryz

jane, a local friend with friends in SPI says it's been evacuated with no cell, power, sewer services, but little damage.

My friends in Houston have lived in their house since about 1960.  With this damage (no water this morning, but lots more rain predicted), they're about to decide to move to a retirement complex.  They're in their early 80s, too.

Sue, sorry about your a/c.  We know that's something that we can't live without in our part of the world.  Good luck!

Sharon, hope you got a good night's sleep.

Margaret and Jesse brought my car back to me last night, and I drove it to the Y this morning. Everything works fine, so I'm happy to have it back.  Margaret is happy to have her car back, too.
"When someone you love dies, you never quite get over it.  You just learn how to go on without them. But always keep them safely tucked in your heart."

Cottoncandy

Jane...we only got about an inch of rain...still having windy conditions...sad for our neighbors on the coast...and Houston area...lots of help going that way...prayers continue for all with loss..I saw on news just now...people and pets still being rescued....I think I may need a battery for my IPad..let me know if you are satisfied with one from Amazon...at least it has been a lot cooler the last few days...have a good day...Darlene

jane

Darlene...if you have an Apple Store...or an authorized reseller, take it there first and ask if they can check the battery.  We thought Ray's needed a new battery...took it to an authorized reseller in Cedar Falls, Ia and he said he'd try something else first.  He held down the power off button for a long, long time and then let it restart.  He held it down much longer than I would have to restart it....and it's worked fine ever since. He says they sometimes just get "kerfluy"...not a tech term......but it sorted itself out.

I figured a new battery for $34.00 was worth it.  On my PC laptop, the battery is outside the case..snaps into the back...so easy to get in and out and replace.  We'll see.

Mary....thanks for news on SPI.  The video I saw didn't look like damage...just A LOT of rain...and, of course, being at sea level, there's no place for it to go.

Hope Jeanne's daughter is OK in Houston.

Dark clouds over here and sprinkles of rain...and the joints say more rain coming!  I'm not doing much more...been out to pay the Plumbing Co., get some $$ at the bank for the house, and to WalMart.  Now defrosting some potato soup for lunch.

jane

Marilyn

Sherry, I am not good at selfies but I will try next time I curl my hair and put on makeup. No pics without makeup.  :2funny:

We are getting smoke and ash here on the coast from all the fires burning in Oregon. There is a very big on just about 40 miles south and a few miles east of us. It makes it hard for me to go outside and this house is not air tight. We need new windows and the sliding door in the bedroom has a big gap at the top. I have asked Keith about getting new windows and he doesn't want to spend the $$ to put them in, he doesn't like to spend $$ on improvements unless absolutely necessary.I won't invite anyone over and very few friends have ever been here, The furniture was Keith's parents and is pretty ragged, the carpets are old shag and I have never been able to get them cleaned, they\ve been in the house for 30+ years. I feel like I am living in someone else's house (his ex wife's). Even his sister has told him  he needs to get new furniture to make the house mine.  Sorry Too much information.

JeanneP

Not heard from Houston yet. That means they are working hard. They always just call when trouble over. Each of the boys lives in different areas of the city. so suppose each are looking out for the others.
Sue. Could be only the Freon on your A.C if it just went sudden. Usually if Tech problem they act funny for awhile. Hope so. Good idea to bring up above ground if you put a new one in. I no others that had them in the Crawl space. When made a widow she was never able to go down to it.

Mary. Did you decide to let them Total your car and just get it fixed? Hope so. LIke me, hate to go buy a new one.  I am still playing around with mine. Did have them do a full check up and all is O.K. was thinking starter acting up but now  working fine. A/c still needs work on. All that comes to under $350 so may just fix mine up. I love driving it  and doesn't look that old. Body good.

Went grocery shopping early today. Monday seems to be the big stocking up after the Sunday sales.
Picked up a family pack of nice size chicken legs.(Usually so skinny)
So as usual spending a day cooking. Have baked all the legs. Put them into small baggies. 3 in each. Ready for freezer.
Also got a frozen pizza. Dr. it up with mushrooms. more cheese. Baked it. Cut into 6 big pieces. Put in separate bags. Into freezer
Going to try and use sweet potatoes that they say are good for you. Never really liked them. Bought a large on and cubed it. Boiled it 5 min.
While oven on I did this.

Recipe
Directions. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C). In a large bowl, toss the dry onion soup mix, sweet potatoes and vegetable oil until the sweet potatoes are well coated. Arrange the mixture on a large baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven 40 to 50 minutes, or until the sweet potatoes are tender.

Just tasted some.  Not to bad . Used the Lipton Onion Mix

Back of my head started hurting but seems O.K Now.  It hard to not turn and sleep on the area that got hurt. Never did get a headache. good sign

JeanneP

Marilyn

Jeanne, the sweet potato recipe sounds delicious. I hope your boys are OK there in Texas.

Cottoncandy

Jeanne..thanks for the cooking ideas..I was just thinking today I need to cook up some and freeze it for later...I'm going to try your sweet potato recipe...would like more ideas. Darlene

maryz

Darlene, if you want cooking ideas, you should go to the What's Cooking discussion.  Lots of ideas there.

I finally got back to playing duplicate tonight, but we didn't do very well.  It was still good to be playing bridge.

Mary....how wonderful Jesse could fix your car and you can have it again!

Misty, foggy morning here...leaves are changing color, soybeans are beginning to turn golden, so fall is quickly approaching.  I guess, for me, fall begins this Friday, Sept. 1.  I go by what they call the meteorological seasons...Sept/Oct/Nov = Fall; Dec/Jan/Feb=Winter; March/April/May = Spring; June/July/Aug = Summer.

Not much going on here today...more laundry to finish up and that's about it.  Good day to read.

SCFSue

Good morning, Buddies.  It's almost 11:00 a.m. and I'm trying to reach Stacie and/or Jon by phone as I'm thinking they may need to come up here if the Hurricane comes close.  So far no luck.  The cell phone numbers I have don't work and don't have the phone number of their new apartment--and the apartment manager won't give it to me.  I may have to call Alex this afternoon or early evening when his classes are over and when he can return my call.

My Molly Maids cleaning crew were here about 8:15 this morning.  I'd finished eating breakfast, but not much else.  As usual they changed the sheets on my bed and zipped through the rest of the house, damp mopping all the floors--hardwood everywhere except the family room which is tile.  So I'm pretty clean for the next 2 weeks.

I hope Darlene and anyone else in the vicinity of the hurricane has a place to shelter if it comes near.  Take care Every Buddy.  And hopefully the hurricane will spin itself out before too much more damage is done.  A WVa high school friend lives in the city under siege and has moved from her first floor apartment to another on the 3rd floor of that building.

Have a nice day and try to keep dry if you are getting lots of rain.

Thank you Mary..Darlene

SharonE

Mary, glad you got your car and also that you're back to duplicate.  I think I will check that link you gave Darlene out.

Sue, I hope Jon and family are safe.  Odd that they would change their cell #'s without giving them to you and then not give you the new landline.  I hope you can connect with Alex or Nick.

Jeanne, you cook and I do laundry!  Lots easier to do the laundry!  :D  Sounds good though. I bake sweet potatoes and add butter or butter spread. YOu can also sprinkle cinnamon over the buttered, mashed sw. pot.  Yum. I often have that with a center ham slice.

I've been to the pain dr. and thought I was going to see the rep to be reprogrammed. Unfortunately, it was just a recheck with the PA. Didn't amount to anything. They did connect me with the rep and I will see her on Friday.  I see the ortho on Thursday, so this is dr. week!  Yea Rah!   Kind of chilly here today. Only 70 degrees. I put on a long-sleeve shirt when I got home and wore a jacket to the appt.  I guess Fall is about here, Jane.

Jane, I'm glad it will be an easier drive for you to WI than MI.  I'm surprised to hear that Minneapolis is easier to drive in than other big cities.  I think I've heard Melanie complain about it, but maybe not. The good fresh farm corn sounds delicious, but I'm a little afraid to try it with my stomach/diverticulosis problems.

I did stop at Lowes and picked  up some fertilizer for John to put on the cherry trees. While there, I also got another rain gauge.

Stay safe, all of you on the coasts.  Sharon

Hi every Buddy, The smoke is not much at this time. It has been pretty damp overnight and this morning so I hope that will cut down on the smoke and ash from the fires. It was pretty bad yesterday and if the wind turns NW like the forecast says we will get a lot more smoke or if it is coming from the NW it will blow the smoke the other way.

It is terrible what is happening in Houston, Texas and other communities there. Oregon is dealing with quite a few fires but is getting a group of volunteers together to go to Texas to help there.

I was able to get out with Freckles this morning and not have to wear a surgical mask. I do have to be careful to take care of my lungs since I have COPD.

The damage from the winds and 50”+ inches of rain is hard to fathom.  Two of our favorite towns to stay, enroute to S. Texas, have both also been hit hard....LaGrange has 24” of water and Victoria was slammed hard, according to the news.

Beautiful, cool morning here.  Will need to het my walk in and then get ready for lunch and bridge out at the golf club.

Have a good Wednesday.

Jane

SharonE

Marilyn, I hope they get the fires under control soon.  It must be very hard on anyone with breathing problems, not to mention the damage done by the fires.

I'm sure everyone in the nation is praying for the victims of Hurricane Harvey in TX and LA.  They say we in SC may even be impacted with rain and wind.  Nothing life threatening here though.  The amount of rain in TX is unbelievable!

I woke to the news  that Ms Frances had been taken to the ER. Apparently she fell sometime in the night, but fortunately was able to reach her phone to call 911.  The word is that she hit her head, that she has a UTI, but so far nothing life threatening. Nancy supposedly is rearranging her schedule to try to get down here soon, whenever that is. The poor thing really needs to be in a nursing home with 24/7 care.

I've got my last load of laundry in, but my back is really hurting. I did do my leg exercises, but that shouldn't affect my back.

Enjoy your bridge, Jane.  I hope that by the time you go south, the towns you stay in will be okay.
Hi to all. Sharon

It was raining here this morning when I finally got out of bed about 8:30.  It was cool and dark, so pretty easy to sleep in.  I haven't accomplished much this morning.  I've had breakfast, read the paper, and finished today's crossword puzzle and that's about it.  I haven't gone out to walk, but might do that later if the rain is not heavy.

I did talk to Jon and Stacie yesterday and they think they are going to be OK.  They moved out to a suburb this past year and are higher than New Orleans.  I also talked to Nick at LSU and he was attending classes and no talk of closing school has been mentioned to students.

I'm fixing frozen salmon for lunch and will have some more pear/cottage cheese salad as I cooked another batch of pears yesterday.  I have an ear of corn that needs cooking, so will zap that in the microwave.  Probably have a BLT without the lettuce for supper.

Sharon, I was just ready to post when I saw your message about Ms. Frances.  I sure hope her daughter gets down there right away and takes some responsibility for her mother.  I can't tell you how much I appreciate Tim's care for me--and I'm so happy he is self employed so that he can check on me.

Have a nice day, Buddies.
Sue

jane

Bridge was OK...has 3 tables, but my cards were mediocre.

That was the excitement for the day...except for seeing 3 guys I used to teach with.  They were over to golf...hard to recognize them...it's been 20 yrs!  Geez...they've sure gotten older and grayer!  hahaha..

jane

SharonE

Sue, they did admit Frances to  the hospital. Nancy says she's going to try to rearrange her schedule to get down here right away. I hope that's a fact and not just her spin on things. She often says what she thinks you want to hear, or at least IMHO.  Ellen has taken charge (her housekeeper) and has kept me updated. She did ask me to go over and copy the list of meds she's taking, which I did.  I am so thankful for Ellen. Otherwise, it would probably fall on me and right now, that would be difficult.  I can't help judging her daughter even though I know I shouldn't.  My kids are so caring, it's hard not to see the contrast.  Sharon

Sharon, I'm sorry about your Miss Frances.  It's a shame about her daughter, but maybe the hospital won't discharge her to come home without fulltime care.  Like you, I'm very thankful for my four wonderful daughters.

jane, too bad that your co-teachers have turned old and grey.  Glad it's just them and not US.

Marilyn, I hope the fires are about out in your area.  I've been so attached to news about Harvey that I haven't paid much attention to anything else.  Breathing is definitely important.  LOL

The rain started here about noon and has continued on and off since then.  We're supposed to get more of the spin-off from Harvey tonight and tomorrow - about 2" here.  Nashville and West TN are due to get maybe up to 11".  The devastation is just incredible.  My friends have been able to get come clearing out done, with the help of grandchildren.  But I don't know what they're going to do long-term or where they'll be staying.  They have a son living nearby, but he had 3" of water in his house.
----------------------------------------
John died two years ago today.  Like my wise friend told me on the first anniversary of her husband's death, it doesn't hurt any more today than any other day.  But it's still a day to be especially close.
"When someone you love dies, you never quite get over it.  You just learn how to go on without them. But always keep them safely tucked in your heart."
