Domestic Goddess: Is this correct, if one would like to post/share a recipe, we do so here?  If so, was searching to see if there were separate recipe categories?

I don't think the xxxcactus likes direct sun, but does well in indirect light.  I have some of what's been called Thanksgiving Cactus, which is a pale pink, and I have kept it in my garage at a North West facing window (never gets sun) . I water it once a week and have not used any fertilizer on it. In November when the days get shorter and it gets cooler the buds form and by Thanksgiving I have a good display.  During the year they get very poor attention.

I did put one outside this summer where it did get sun.  It burned and doesn't look well.

Rick, I have heard the cacti do best in north windows, so your location in your garage is fine.  You live in New York; is your garage heated?  I'd never be able to keep any plant in my garage in the winter.

It used to go down to freezing but I tightened things up. Put plastic storm windows up, insulating panels on the doors and weather stripped them. Now it never goes below 50 to55 degrees, and that is with a cold spell of several days.  I recently put in a long workbench and can heat it if I'll be working there.  My garage is under the North corner of the house, so has protection from two sides and above.

Rick, sounds good.

I think putting my cactus on the porch is what saved it.  The sun doesn’t reach it and the house was just too warm for it.  I’m glad I didn’t throw it out which was my first thought as it looked so bad.

Good afternoon, been raining since last night, but up to 50 to day, and back down to 30 to morrow. Now they are saying sleet for Christmas.
FlaJean My Christmas cactus had one bud on it and after a week it fell off. I did put the plant in the bathroom for a month, and it generally blooms for Christmas.  No sign of bloom this year. I had it on the sun porch all summer, but not in the sun.

Anyone know why a poinsettia sheds leaves so bad?  I bought 2 huge ones from Sam's Club (instead of a tree this year), any place else ones this big were $50 & these were only $15. One sits on a bar stool with a burgundy sheet draped to the floor... the other sits on the edge of the sheet on the floor.  Reason I put the one high was because of a furnace vent about 3' away.  Don't know why the one up high looks so ratty already & the one on the floor is perfect.  No place else to put them.  I've been watering every day because they are so dry.  Maybe one had gotten too cold or something before I bought them.

Had to laugh at your beautiful sunset with the people walking along, reminded me of the time we were in FL when the only other person on the beach was a guy from Alaska & us.  It was super cold.  Beautiful photos, Jean. I've never seen a cactus bloom like that.

Jack, we had that sunset tonight but I didn't even go out.  I am still so sore from my dumb/stupid trick day before yesterday, I'm not doing anything I can get out of.  Can't believe I did it... on a ladder, 5 steps up & stepped back because a gust of wind blew the silicone in my face.  You just don't "step back" on a ladder.  The egg size bump on the head was gone next day & no bruises to show but the bones are groaning.  No sense going to ER because they would just X-ray & offer pain pills.  Don't think they do anything for broken tailbone or spine, & I'm not in need of pain pills. I knew I was too tired to do that but wanted to get those slide tracks sprayed so I could close up the slide & up the jacks "in case of freezing mist" overnight.  :dizzy:

:christmastree: In case I don't get back in here, want to wish a Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays to all.

My son went to spend the end of year holidays in Bangkok and travel through Thailand.  He sent colorful pictures that I will share with you.

Bubble a  lot to see and appreciate, and looks like great weather.

FlaJean

Bubble, what interesting and colorful photos.  A trip your son will never forget and will cherish these memories as he gets older.

He loves that country and its people.  It is the third time he goes there.  But this time he visited lots of small villages, traveling by train and stoping 2/3 days in different places on the way.

Shirley

Awesome photos, Bubble.  Your son has a good eye for composing them.  The one of the arch with steps leading up would have impressed my art teacher with the perfect lesson of "everything in the picture leading to the focal point of the arch", or reverse that thought & watch how the arch leads to all areas of the photo. Please tell him "old auntie Shirley is very impressed & thanks for sharing with us sights I will never get to see myself".

Does anyone know how Jeanne Lee is doing?  Better I hope.

Beautiful photos, Bubble.  Thanks for sharing them.

Shirley, I think poinsettias flourish in cooler rooms.  I always place one in our church in memory of my husband and it lasts inside for almost a month(in a room that is not heated unless I light the fireplace) if I don't forget to water it.  I usually plant them outside after the holidays.  And we've been having fairly cool mornings, down in the 50's here in middle Alabama.  I also plant amaryllis outside if someone gives me one for Christmas, but didn't receive one this year.

I hope this helps.

Bubble, very interesting pictures from Thailand.  That must be a huge area in the airport for that large display.  Such a beautiful colorful place.  Thanks for sharing his travels with us.

With the weather, I have only been to the park several times for short walks.  Lots of snow but dry and the wind is clearing the trees so have not taken photos.

This morning I heard a rumble and spotted this at my curb.

[attachimg=3]

Took a walk with Mimi to find out what was going on and if car ok in drive.  Small water leak and they may shut water off but only for short time.

Was 6 degrees this morning and here is the prediction for the next few days.

Mimi had her 9th birthday yesterday so yes, we did go to the park, she insisted.   Here she is.

Happy Birthday to Mimi!

Jack, your temperatures will be similar to ours the next few days, but I think we will be in the teens the next three days, then 30s on the weekend.  We're to go to 19 degrees today and it is already 17 degrees.  I don't have to go out as Tom will get the mail.  I like a clear, dry road to go to the mailbox.

I just looked at Lake Michigan and the ice is almost to the outer lighthouse (the red building).  It isn't ice to walk on yet, but it is icy enough for snow to stay.

Jack, Mimi looks really happy in her birthday photo.  She sure brings lots of happy times and companionship to you.  I still miss my dog Stubby, but decided not to get a rescue dog when I had a bad fall and must wear a brace on my leg until the nerves in my back heal.  I still walk daily, but not as fast and wouldn't be able to keep up with an active dog.  Hopefully when I get the brace off, I may be able to find an older dog at the Humane Society that would be a good companion for me.

Oh HAPPY BIRTHDAY Mimi, hope you get spoilt rotten, and if you dont, your master will have me to answer to.. ;D

Bubble, Jackie, Sue and Mary Ann, Mimi says thanks.  You know she keeps me happy and the last few days there are  more roll overs (her) for a belly rub.

Sue I know it is great to rescue a dog, but there are many sites that suggest small dogs for nursing homes etc.  I still am impressed with the Cavalier King Charles.   You have to be careful and believe I posted where Mimi pulled me down once, 70 pounds is a bit to handle.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MIMI, BEAUTIFUL PHOTO  I wish I could have a dog, but they have to walked.  So I am very happy with my Taffy cat.

HAPPY NEW YEARS TO ALL MY FRIENDS IN HERE.

I used to be a "dog person" but where I am now - no dogs.  I will say at my age, I think I would not want one.  I am boarding a cat, however, and sometimes he keeps me busy and I don't keep him busy enough.  He's been with the family for four years and with me for over two years, maybe three.  He really belongs to Tom's daughter who cannot keep him because her boyfriend is very allergic to cats and breaks out big time.  The cat, Kendrick, and I are happy with the present arrangement.
