Mimi is a pretty birthday girl.

jackwv

Jean thanks, she gives me a lift.  I have had four female  Goldens since 1985 and obviously love the breed.  We got our first, Kibbles, 1985 as a pup and she was with me for almost 16 years.  She was a support for two years after I lost Shirley.   After Kibbles I got Jessie and several years later Zoe so had two with me till I lost Zoe and then a little over a year ago lost Jessie.  It did not take me long to decide I wanted/needed another and so now it is Mimi.   Here is a little piece, the dates may not be clear.

Jack, having seen several pictures of Zoe, it was easy to pick out her picture even without her name.  She always looked like she was having a lot of fun.

Mary Ann my Zoe was always a clown, seldom quiet but never a problem.

I am sharing your weather.  Was 6 degrees when I went to the barbers, long overdue, then to the bank and some groceries.  Dropping below zero tonight.   Just looked out the window and took a photo of a small section of my Barberry Bushes.  The entire length is covered with birds.  Have had this for the last month. Hard to believe they are finding anything left to eat.

Mary Ann

Jack, it's hard to tell, but your birds look to me like juncos.  They seem to gather beneath shrubs.  They are winter birds so will probably find something to eat on your barberry bushes.

Mary Ann

jackwv

Mary Ann  Thanks, do not know the different birds.  They do like the berries on the barberry, but doubt there is much left.   Here is a close up of two of them.

Jack, now they look like English (House) Sparrows.  A very common bird in the US.  It was hard to tell in the other picture because of the distance.   Juncos have plain black backs and whiter breasts, but as I said, it was hard to tell.  If I were to put out a bird feeder, I'd have lots of sparrows.  Years ago someone put up a martin house and before any martins could occupy it, the house was filled with sparrows.

Thanks for the enlarged picture.  I'm not a bird expert but I can identify some.  There are other similar birds and someone may correct me.  Birds migrate and ones I might think similar are not around here.

I just looked at Grand Haven - Brrr!  Several people are on the ice and I think one person was very foolish to stand at the edge of the ice.  Evidently the ice is thick enough to hold a person, but I would not trust it.

Mary Ann I had looked up juncos and read they are winter birds, not sure of the Sparrows.  I have not put food out for years and hope they will move on when the berries are off the bushes.    Never saw this in prior years.
Gives me the shivers to look at Grand Haven, just looked in and may not again till spring.

Lindancer

Jack, I agree with MaryAnn, they look like sparrows, which there are many types, 'During the storm this morning, we had what Mary again described, but we have always called them snow birds.  There were four of them looking for food, tried to put some seed out, but it was covered in a few minutes. to night there is light snow.

Mary Ann and Lin  I found an email address for identifying birds.  Sent them a photo and they also said they are House Sparrows.  Did a look up, and decided it best to not feed them and encourage them to stay and multiply.

Here is the site I read and you might want to check it out.

Wanted to give you the email address that I used to send the photo of the birds for identification.  This is a screen shot and I x'd out several buttons to avoid.  You simply follow their instructions and email to the address given on line 6 .

Another place which identifies birds is at Cornell University (I think--it's been a while since I looked any up).

In the house where I grew up in town, the house was called a story-and-a-half and we had a dormer across most of the top of the house.  Where the roof was at the sides of the house and joined the dormer was a place the sparrows loved.  My dad finally nailed some boards in the joint to keep them out but they found a hole and nested in there.  After Dad died and the house was mine, I had aluminum siding put on the house and Dad's boxed up area was sided. I don't think birds could get in there after that.  By then we had bats and that was another story that I will not get into.

Another interesting bird that lays its eggs in other birds' nests is the cowbird.  The cowbird then leaves the egg there for the other mother to raise her baby.  Unfortunately the cowbird is much larger than most of the other birds so the cowbird gets fed first and the other babies may starve.  With animals and birds it's "me first".

I have a cat wanting me to change his food and water and he's persistent!!!

I also just looked in on Grand Haven and it also gives me the creeps seeing all of those people with animals out there on that shoreline ice.

I would not trust it either!    But I tend to be leery of
ice in the Winter.   As a child,  I went out on thin ice and was called off from it before I could have fallen in ...
So i am always aware ,  even to this day, of the dangers of ice
in the Winter.

Been a busy couple of weeks & still on "holiday" time.... trash pick up is tomorrow instead of today.  With my non-interesting life the weeks/days go by trash, church, hair wash, etc...  sure messes me up when trash day is different because of Christmas & New Years.  Guess I'll survive.

Jack, my face is frozen in a grin at Zoe's photo.  Bless her heart, she was an entertainer.  Kibbles was a beauty (all were), Jessie the dignified lady and Mimi the serene grandmother of all.  I don't think you mentioned before that Mimi had pulled you down... my fear of getting a big dog.  I remember how strong our German Shepherd was & not a chance I could control her now.  I ate dirt a few times even back then. I miss not having a big dog listening for noises & knowing she would hear something different before I did, but don't think I am ready for all the uproar of getting the cats used to a dog.

Good shots of your sparrows.... we had lots of them years ago but they moved on when I cut down shrubs along the sidewalk in front.  They loved to stay in them because the dryer vent would warm them.  They multiplied so much we started calling them our "bush babies".... would flush & startle people that walked up to the front door.  Cas' golf buddy came to lunch many times the year after his wife died & he thought it was the neatest thing to watch 20-30 sparrows flush out of the bushes as he came to the door.

We used to have a lot of the Juncos, most people around here call them "snow birds" because they come when it snows.  They are in danger with cats around because they like to perch in low shrubs & eat seeds off the ground under feeders.  Now that we have cats around the birds moved on.  Most springs we see the house finches, look like sparrows except the males have red heads & chest & females lighter than sparrows.  They really do like to nest any spot they can find close to the house.  We fight the cowbirds because they push out the finch eggs & lay theirs.... and poor little finches feed them until cowbirds come back to get the kids as soon as they can fly.  The red winged blackbirds even push out the cardinal eggs & I have a photo of a male cardinal feeding a blackbird bigger than Papa.... We had birdhouses in the sweet gum tree that I could watch from my kitchen window..... and had to take them down when starlings pulled out the sparrow babies & tossed them on the ground.  They are not nice birds, I chased them off but the babies were damaged & couldn't survive.  Squirrels also tried to pull eggs & babies out of the houses when we put them up out back, so no birdhouses in our yard anymore.

Mary Ann, I am also getting used to cats instead of dogs.  Tom & Tiger are mellowing with age & their mother is so grateful to join us inside for meals, such a pretty & loving cat, but can't get over worrying about her wanting to mark her spot.  She is always willing to go out to the pool area if the others are going out but is happy to go to "her" garage & heated bed now that it is cold.  It would be such a relief if they could all stay inside & be happy, but these are born to be free & impossible to get that out of them.

Sue, I had a serious talk with my poinsettias today, think it is time to move the sick one to the back bedroom that is cooler.  Not sure why it is dropping so many leaves & the other looks so healthy, but still think it may have been damaged before I bought them... too cold on the truck or something.  Thanks for the tip.

Bedtime in Kansas.... was heading that direction 2 hours ago .... cats are all snoozing in the other end of the house.  Thanks for the pics, Jack, & another Happy Birthday to Mimi!

jackwv

Shirley it has been 11 years since I took a video of Zoe running wild in an agility contest.  We stopped trying but Jessie was great and listened :)

I will not feed the sparrows and attract more, hope they will soon move on.  They are not bothered by Mimi and she normally ignored them but yesterday every 15 minutes or so she apparently had enough and would run along the bushes and chase them.  When she would sit back down they all returned.  I do not want a feeder, and have a number of cats that wander the neighborhood, and do not want to deal with them marking.

-2 outside, no walk today, Mimi does not mind the cold, I do!

It's 38 degrees here this morning.  I've walked over to the library and back, but fortunately I still have winter clothing and was warm enough.  Yesterday my son Tim and I went out to lunch and then to Kroger where he helped me shop--and we bought a large bag of bird seed for my feeder.  He gave me a lovely new pottery bird house which he put on a tree just outside my kitchen.  I don't think I'll get residents right away, probably not until warmer weather.

Aki, a wonderful performance.  She is both skilled and beautiful.

Aki...
...I know I have said this before, but you have very talented grandchildren...and I also know that you shrug it off by saying this is just a hobby- pastime but, they really are very talented and with such elegance, grace and beauty, you must be very proud of them indeed...I know I would be if they were mine..

Delighted to see Moe again and listen to her play.  That is a very pretty dress she is wearing, perfect for the performance. Hope all is well with your family (and that young man still has a twinkle in his eyes).  A joy to watch your grandchildren grow up, thank you.

Don, are you missing your radio job or just rolling over & going back to sleep on Sundays?
