Been playing Rummikub for yearsâ€"helps keep your mind sharp.  Sunday we played a domino game called Mexican Train.  That game takes concentration and also keeps your mind nimble.  Our family has always loved playing games.

Lindancer

Jean, when we first got married the only thing my husband I could afford was listen to the radio and play games. My mother gave us a cribbage board, which I still have. Just throwing this in, we also had and ice box.  It was just after THE WAR and we were on the waiting list for a refrigerator  It was two years before we got a washing machine.

Interesting game, but with my memory --------

To the park today, the tulips and daffodils are gone and they have dug up the beds for new plantings.   Took this photo of allium plants, fortunately Mimi does not eat them, would smell like onions.

                  [attachimg=1]

Shirley

Hahaha, Jack, she isn't smiling, looks like she kind of has her nose turned up at the onion smell!  The allium is pretty, sure looks a lot like my chives only larger & darker.  Mine aren't blooming yet.

They sandblasted the pool this morning & put the tile around the top this afternoon.  Hopefully (weather permitting) the plaster goes on tomorrow & then we fill. I expect the pool man will put the filter together & make sure the pump is okay... everything come apart for winter.  Such a pain.  Yard crew came after one group left and finished before the others got here so they didn't have a problem.  That sandblasting is a nightmare.  Hopefully all will be over soon & once the chemicals are stable, won't have to mess with it much.  I am worn to a frazzle tonight.

The kids & I played a lot of Monopoly..... I swear my oldest son learned to read & count money so his big sister couldn't cheat him!!!
Don & Bubble, you both look so serious, are you sure that game is for FUN?  Sorry to see it is almost time to part, but you've had this time that most of us would envy, of being in a whole different life from what we deal with every day.  Like my mother used to say to me, "enjoy this special time and remember it with love, after all, if you ate candy all the time it wouldn't be a treat, would it?"  Thanks for sharing your days with all of us, the joy of having someone to talk to and care for.

Early but I'm off to bed in hopes of getting 5 hours sleep tonight.  Been getting 3 & 4 hours and that isn't enough.  Got to be out & unlock gates by 7:00 am with no let up all day, this is NO GAME!  Sweet dreams to all & to all a good night~~  I've heard that before.

Gloria and your fascinator!  Lovely.  I remember the picture you had wearing a red hat, you looked so lovely in that picture.

I haven't worn a "dress" hat since I was one of four women in church wearing hats and the other women were much older than I was.  It was about the time of the bouffant hairdos and most women quit wearing hats.  The hat I wear now is worn in winter and is a stocking cap I knit and is nice and warm.

Gloria, what a lovely photo of the hat but also of you! Is that a flower fascinator?

Lindancer

Thanks MaryAnn, Everyone get dressed up for a meeting, like we did years ago, plenty of jewelry

Jackie, I was on my way to a RH chapter meeting, photo was taken in my back yard

Patricia, also thank you and yes it is supposed to be a flower

Such a great photo Gloria, you have a twinkle in your eye!

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

Gloria,  Beautiful picture of you and your fascinator!!!  You would have fitted in perfectly at the Royal Wedding this past Saturday.   My mother was a "great hat" person.  She loved hats.   I love them on other people, but just don't like to wear them myself.

Thanks for sharing !

I still have my "going away" hat from my wedding in 1958.  It is a Schiaparelli and a gift from my Aunt.  However, my head doesn't want to fit into it now.  It is navy straw with a yellow straw crown and is lovely--I don't know how or why it doesn't fit now, but I can't bear to give it up.  My son will probably sell it when I pass on to my (hopefully) heavenly reward!  I only wore this hat twice--once at my wedding and again at a tea party for officer's wives in Brunswick, Maine.

Mary Ann

Sue, I once bought a hat with three mink paws (?) and it was fine as long as I wore hats, but when I discontinued wearing them, I think I never wore a hat again.  But I still have that hat.  I couldn't bear to part with those little mink pieces.  The hat probably will go in a garage sale after I'm gone, maybe even to Goodwill or Salvation Army.  Some things we just hang on to forever.

Planted some impatiens in front of the little hibiscus bush.

Always liked impatiens, and the hibiscus really adds to the view.

Mary Ann

Jean, I like the way it looks, too.

Looks so nice, Jean.  I never had much luck with Hibiscus, but yours looks nice and healthy.  I guess your temperatures are good for them

Jean, I like the color.  I put in about 30 inpatients plant this year. Just water and the bloom all summer.

I’ve found impatiens one of the easiest plants to grow.  A little water and a few hours of shade and they bloom in this area from spring and into the fall.

We are still anxiously waiting for the little Bluebirds to fly out of their house.  Mama and Papa are still feeding them but it shouldn’t be long now.  The little Chickadees were gone before we realized it.  Larry took the nest out of the Chickadee house and it was neatly made entirely of moss.  Mrs. Chickadee is a very clean housekeeper. 😁. Before the Chickadees left I did see her (or maybe him?) once leaving with a white pouch of debris which she dropped on the ground and then flew back into the house.

jackwv

Jean, keep Larry busy and send us photos of the birds.

I second that, Jack... are you listening, Jean & Larry?  Your flowers are so pretty.

I have not planted a thing this year, but do have lots of columbine blooming along with the Japanese iris that took over the tiger lilies (I didn't think anything would crowd out tiger lilies).  The blue cornflowers are blooming all over where the mowers don't get them, and the yarrow is blooming, I have only the native white kind. Anything that blooms in my yard is a "do it yourself" type.  I also have some yellow blooms, look like cosmos but are not, they bloom off & on all summer & leaves are not like cosmos.  I will try to get a camera after them tomorrow, when yard guys are done.  The pool is all finished & looks great.  I just vacuumed the bottom & turned off for the night, chemicals are about as perfect as you can get.  The people that plastered did a beautiful job & the new tile so nice.  Only way I could be happier is if I didn't have a pool to worry about at all.   ::)

Joy, my mother was also a hat lover & never went to town without her white gloves & hat.  She even took a hat making class & had a ball making all kinds.  When my friend & I worked in Kansas City we would walk from the office to a little hat store & try on hats for a while before catching the street car to go to our apartment.  Remember the bee hive hair dos & hats?  Ah, found a sale & could not resist, it really did look like a white foam bee hive.... I wore it & kept until I got married & left home.

Sue, I ran across the belt to my "going away" dress not too long ago.... can't believe I'm telling this, but it wouldn't go around my thigh today!  Also, remember those garter belts we wore before panty hose?  Cannot believe I was ever so skinny.  I still have not thrown either item away, always good for laughs....

Better go take my shower or it will be too dark to go for my "twisty" (chocolate & vanilla) yogurt cone.... been almost a nightly thing.  So far the scales have not changed.

There where so many beautiful hats at the Royal Wedding. When I first came to the USA I had one trunk that had nothing but hats and gloves in it. Always bought a hat with every outfit. I have 4 still that I have bought at least 45 years ago. All in hat boxes. Have a wedding coming up in October. I think I will wear one. Be the only person I bet.....

Jeanne, when I was growing up, women had a lot of hats.  Plus you would never go to church with out a hat on.  Easter Sunday we would get all dressed up and walk around with gloves and a new hat.

To see some brilliant - fascinating, some bizarre and some clever hat wearings, watch or go to our Royal Ascot ( ladies day ) horse racing annual event...I think a day for the ladies to outshine each other with their choice of the day...
