Vanilla Jackie, my late husband and I were touring Ireland on our own sometime ago--more than 15 years.  It was cold and rainy every where we stopped.  We decided to go to the steeple chase races, can't remember the city.  We were bundled up in long pants, sweaters under jackets, etc. and were amazed to see beautiful young girls there in skimpy dresses and those gorgeous large brimmed hats that I had swooned over in dress shops and cost over 200 Pounds each.  We had a seat near the top of the bleachers and kept hearing loud cheers above us.  We turned around and saw a room full of young men who were watching a soccer match on TV.

Then when we walked down to the area near the fences where the riders were to race, two Irish men stopped us and said, "Hey are ye, Yanks?"
Bob said, "yes".  They wanted to know why we were touring Ireland and Bob told them my mother was a Carney.  And one said, "ooh, me mither-in-law is a Kearney!"  We had an interesting talk with them and they gave us tips on things to see.  It was a fun day despite the rain!

Sue...
...now I have to ask..on that day, did you come away with more than you went in with? ;) hope you had the luck of the Irish with you...

I found your story experience delightful...Ahh yes, when we were young, we never felt the cold, did we? dont think we could get away with skimpy dresses...we know how to, and what it takes to keep ourselves warm...Hats to the races, now that brings me back to the famous lady of...Gertrude Shilling...she would always stun us with her " rather outrageous,  extravagant " and over large hats...she was always hitting the news headlines at Ascot...

Oh, Mary Ann!  They're adorable twins!  You are lucky to live not too far away.  Enjoy them!

Mary Ann they are lovely.

Mary Ann

Thank you all for your comments.  Part of my luck in living near them (40 miles) is that their paternal grandfather (Tom) lives with me!  Alicia's parents live in Milwaukee.  They are good little girls and give a lot of us a lot of cheer.  This was Easter Sunday and the girls were 14 months old at the time.

They are very cute little redheads, MaryAnn. And each one seems to favor a different parent.

Mary Ann

We've discovered the same thing,  Patricia, however, they do favor each other too.  One day I noted an expression on Ellie's face that reminded me of Tom's older brother when he was young.  I mentioned it to Alicia and she said she thought Ellie favored our family and Jo had characteristics of her family.  It is interesting how those things show up when the child is so young.

They really are darling, Mary Ann.... about the same age as my gr-grandson who happens to also be a "fire engine red head".  Remembering seeing photos of you & Norm, they do look a lot like you two, but their parents even look a lot alike.  Maybe Mother has a little more red in her hair?  So cute and such fun to watch which genes they end up with, isn't it?

angelface555

MaryAnn, I've heard that identical and fraternal twins DNA have different ratios due to the complexity of ancestorial DNA and the instances and intricacies of gene development in the womb.

Thank you, Amy and Shirley.  It is fun seeing the girls advance.  Alicia had fertility help and the girls are from separate eggs.  Alicia's hair is orange color and definitely her own red.  James hair is now auburn, but he was orange red at one time.  We just knew both babies would have red hair.  But Jo's hair has curl and body like James hair and Ellie has Alicia's straight hair.  For a while, that was the way we could tell them apart, but now they have their own mannerisms and looks that we know who is whom!  Or is that 'whom is who'?

Norm had a great-grandson born a month after the girls, but he lives in California.  His family does make it to Michigan so we see him occasionally.  He has an interesting background - his mother is Chinese.  He has coal black hair and looks Oriental, but he does have some of his father's looks.  He is a darling child.

Patricia, I think the girls' DNA would be like those of other pairs of sisters, who are not twins.

Mary Ann

angelface555

From what I understand, while identical twins' DNA is close, usually within two to three percentage points, fraternal is as you say more like other pairs of sisters and can vary as much as five to eight percent. I remember seeing a YouTube DNA video about a set of male triplets.

They, the parents said that two were identical twins and one from another egg. It was shocking to them to find out from 23andme that one of the identical twins matched up with the fraternal percentage wise whereas the other identical twin was entirely different percentage wise. However, a genetics professor said that this wasn't unusual due to one child may have more genes from one parent than the other, even identical twins.

Mary Ann

Patricia, I had read that in regard to siblings.  I think people who don't read about DNA assume siblings DNA is the same since they have the same two parents, but, as you wrote, a person may get more genes from one parent than the sibling.  Norm never had his DNA tested so we'll never know how we compared.  Of course, my parents did not have it done, either.  I can tell you, on Ancestry, I have almost 500 4th cousins or less who have tested and I have no idea how many others 5th cousins and further, because I haven't bothered with that far back.  4th cousins would go back to my 3rd great-grandparents, some of whom I can identify.

...both myself and " he who I reside with " have not seen one like yours, nor with its paler colour of blue...I find this one unusual as we have never seen one with singular spaced out flowers, which each flower has its own four or five petals...I do have to add, it is stunningly beautiful...

The first time I saw a hydrangea such as Sato's photo was in British Columbia, Canada, a few years ago and it was shortly before Sato showed his video - so then I knew what I had seen.  It is rather dainty compared to the hydrangea I had seen previously.

I am more familiar with bearded iris and I think the Japanese iris is so pretty and rather delicate.

Keep 'em coming Sato; we love your flower pictures.

Beautiful photos of beautiful flowers, Sato!  Sadly, my Japanese iris (all a pale yellow) did not last long this year, not sure why.  They had lots of buds on each stem but each turned brown the same day they opened.  My wisteria growing up the elm tree down by the river had only a few big clusters of blooms that were brown the day they bloomed, a late freeze did that damage, I think, maybe just too dry this spring.  Always happy to see your perfect blooms, Sato, (I am a little jealous)......

We had storms 2 nights in a row, last night one little town west of us (the direction our storms come from) had 80 mph winds and lots of rain.  Our local stations were on "storm watch" with warnings for flooding rain, hail and that wind.  Last I heard our winds were only about 60 mph but did have a power outage not far from my house.  Our electricity only blinked enough so had clocks to reset.  A real heat wave of near 100 tomorrow, I'm dreading that.  Had to go "back flush" water out of the pool, we had only an inch & half but all water on the concrete around the pool pours into the pool (away from the house).  Plenty of little leaves to clean out.... later tonight.
