Oldiesmann: Relevant links can be found in topics in the Homemaking, Food & Garden board. I'll see about moving them over to articles here when I get a chance.

Oldiesmann: I'm not finding anything related to recipes on the site. I'll do some digging through the Internet Archive and see if I can dig them up. It's possible that got lost in the big server crash back in 2016

Rick, I put in what Gloria wrote and it led me to the above.  Of course, it is too dark to see anything.

Mary Ann,
I googled "NY Harbor Webcam" and came up with what you posted.  The Statue Of Liberty ids there over to the right.  Look in the upper right corner for a "more" dropdown.

Rick, I found the Statue of Liberty and looked at the "more" suggestions.  Since it is dark, I could not identify anything.  Incidentally, I have never been to New York City.

You'll see a ferry go by in the left foreground once in a while.

Big thunder Boomers just passed - on it's way to Gloria.  Lightning hit very close but no damage here - I don't think. Will look in the morning.

Rick - That's a beautiful sight!  I've never been to NYC, so it doesn't look real to me.  Wish I could be there in person.

Mary Ann

Rick, is that land at the left the end of Long Island?  Where Gloria de lives?

I would guess it is Staten Island to the left. Gloria would be way off to the upper right. Some of those lightning flashes were probably from her area. I meant to go back to that cam today when it was light but I missed doing that ;-(  The weather bureau mentioned four tornadoes (cat 1) in the area.

If I scrolled down on that page there were many more camera sites there.  Times Square is a good one even at night. The City never sleeps, and lots of light there even at night.

Rummel, I live 100 miles from the city. On the left side could be Battery Park, where the ferry go out to the statue and Ellis Island. I also check Time Sq.  I miss going into the city like we use to.    Went to TV shows and lot of plays, now I have got to old and they are expensive The last time I have been in I think was a week after 9-11..  we use to go to see the dressed window at Christmas, of course go to Radio City and would eat in the Twin Towers.

By the way a tornado hit Ronkonkoma last night about 20 miles west of us. We had wind, heavy rain and terrible lighting.  Taffy stayed under the bed all night

That tornado was one of the four in the area.  The lightning was pretty wild here too. We shut off most of the electric stuff lest there was a power spike. With one flash the boom came immediately after it - very close.

I never was a big fan of going into NYC but my son goes there often.

Just looked at a map and think the area to the left in the cam shot might be Bayonne, NJ.  The Statue Of Liberty is visible and I think we are looking (sort of ) North toward NYC.

I'm enjoying the talk about NYC.... only been in & out when going to England.  Heavy heart the morning we passed the Statue on the way out & had tears running down my face when we saw her 3 years later on the way back.  My brother & his wife were meeting us and I was afraid he had bad news to tell me.

When my brothers were in during WWII they had all agreed that any bad news would be told once "they" got in the States, BEFORE coming home.  Because in those days, (mid '50s) we didn't call home but the day our baby was born & I didn't get to talk to my parents even then.....

Seemed like it took a week to get the ship docked & down that gang plank... I went over on the SS United States, he didn't have rank to have a wife join him, but I had a Civil Service job & knew "they" couldn't object to a wife going on a tourist passport & paid her own way and came home on a troop ship with husbands all "in the hole" & wives 3 or 4 to a room with 3 or 4 kids ... NOT a pleasure trip.

All was okay when we finally got to get off, no bad news & because it was days before Easter, my brother had installed a rack on the back of their station wagon & picked up our trunks at the dock & we drove straight home to arrive at meal time, Easter Day.... more tears.  My mother had always said that "she steeled herself to have her sons go overseas with military, but had not considered a daughter being gone for 3 years".  You really brought up old memories.... and that sad, sad feeling as the Statue disappeared from sight.  Quite a trip for a 19 year old bride.....

Gloria, rain today, but color starting to show so the photo will be coming.

Shirley

Just got back from a quick trip to MO for a 65th high school class reunion.  Hot days & nights but finally cooled down about half way home today.  Had some rain, always love driving in the rain, but today I managed to get off my beaten path going through KC, highway road work & detours so got caught in the wrong lane & spent half an our (at least) going in circles to get back on the right route.  Trees are just starting to turn in MO so when I go back for a family reunion in a couple weeks, should be in all their glory.  The maples in MO are so pretty, almost as pretty as the aspen in CO.

The total cloud cover caught me not knowing if I was going N/S/E/ or West in KC.... and my GPS is not working, won't charge & not sure if it needs a new battery or new charger.  BUT, I sure have to get something going since my built in GPS fails me all the time (I have NO sense of direction).  I did pull off at one spot called the "Cattle Pens" to take a couple photos through the window.... a fine mist that was almost like fog.  Normally you can see for miles & miles but today it was almost eerie.

jackwv

Shirley nothing holds you back.  I gave up on the GPS and now get directions read to me on the iPhone.    Oglebay is packed this weekend so stayed away.

Was doing some yard work when a neighbor pointed out the tall plant in my gutter.   Looks like corn, but believe it is just tall grass from a seed carried by a bird.   Will just let it go, it is on the second story of my home and I have given up climbing ladders. It is on the high side and the gutter slopes down from it to the down spout.    If I get a larger crop I will have to get someone to remove.  At this point it is interesting.

Jack, quite an interesting picture.  Proverbs says there is nothing new under the sun, but I don’t know.  :D

Shirley

Haha, Jack, that is really a sight!  Under my bird feeder I find those plants growing all the time, from the mixed seed I buy for the birds.  I think that's what they like least of all because so much lands on the ground!  The birds have a knack for re-planting a lot of seed, ::) but never saw it growing in the gutters.

Not getting anything done since I got back from church.  Fog & mist & more rain to come, in fact we have a flood watch until next Wed, so guess I'll have to put the slide out & empty the closets & drawers between showers. I don't like to close the slide when it's wet, not sure it matters but I "picture" mildew.

so_P_bubble

Jack, you have a blue roof?  I never saw one before, always red or grey.  I wonder if it is cooler...

MarsGal

Jack, I am guessing that your plant is one of the Sorghums.

Mary Ann

Bubble, it goes well with a red brick fireplace and, I think, a white house.  Red, white and blue?

Mary Ann

Vanilla-Jackie

Jack wv...
...that is quite a sight...looks like the plant is walking your gutter....

jackwv

Bubble and Mary Ann, strange with the color, and from my camera.   The roof is dark green and the home yellow.

Shirley

MarsGal, I think you are right about the name.... we see a lot of it grown in KS, understand it's good feed for a lot of critters & some farmers leave a patch for the pheasants.  Pheasant hunting brings a lot of hunters to KS, big business!

My computer shows the roof is blue, too, Jack.... maybe a filter on your camera?  No.... but as true blue as you could mix.  My iPhone knows how to give directions but the driver isn't that smart.  Son has his even "talk to him" but I did better with the old phone. #2 son said the iPhone was more "user friendly" but mine hates me.
:crazy2:

Mary Ann

Jack, I know I've seen full pictures of your house before, but this picture didn't show any of it so I took a guess.  But the roof does show a bright blue!  I hope the brick of the fireplace is really red.

Mary Ann

MarsGal

Shirley, when I was a youngster and teen, I used to love to see the pheasants in the fields. Then they disappeared. I later found out that the Game Commission had to stock they regularly for the hunters. They stopped doing that, so the pheasants died out here. I did see one, dead on the road, many years later while traveling from Allentown back to Harrisburg. Sad. I always thought they were a beautiful bird.

A few days ago we talked about the game MahJongg and I promised to post some pictures of the colorful tiles.
