Amy

Jack, they don't sound nice. Not sure if we have stink bugs here will ask .

Including a photo of Golden Girl trying to relax...do you think she has the right position?. I hope I have done this right...

Amy, evidently Golden Girl thinks she's comfortable.

I was able to see the picture and I clicked on it to get a larger picture.

Mary Ann

Amy

Mary Ann, she is such a sweet dog..and as age creeps slowly up on her she is finding it difficult to get into the van so she now has a step to get up on first. Also a big step for her to get up on the bed.....no, she/they are not spoiled, just well loved.

The difference ten days makes, from plus sixteen degrees after an ice storm to minus thirty-five, after an earlier snow froze on those ice covered trees. A bit of Northern Arctic lore. Notice how the smoke from the left is bent over at the top? That means the cloud cover is keeping the warmth in. If the smoke is headed straight up, no cloud cover, get out your longjohns and heaviest parkas!

Here is a photo from the 19th at plus 16. I know MaryAnn is familiar with icy trees just not such severe temperatures.

And the same two White Birch just ten days later at minus thirty-five. The second tree has broken under the icy snow's weight.

Angelface...
...I know trees are of tough making but so sad to see that Birch buckling under that heavy weight of snow at minus 35....Just shows how sudden our climate temperatures can change, in the blink of an eye...

Love the pose of GG, Amy, she is a beauty & know how it hurts to watch them have to slow down.

I shivered as I scrolled along your photos, Patricia.  Great shots, my brain actually "felt the cold"..... Ice is so wicked for breaking down trees.  One year I took photos every half hour or hour of a huge tree across the river, as the branches broke off.  It had a big cluster of branches below at the end of the day.  The "nub/stump" sprouted new growth next year.  We only had the one day of ice here this winter, and no other moisture, so desperately dry.

Jack, I got my iPhone ordered today, it is supposed to be "an updated 5"..... some reviews say better than the 6 or 7, so I am just eager to get one that works every time!  Also got my next year of service with talk, text & data.  Phone should be here tomorrow or next day & then I'll probably be sitting in a corner crying because I don't know how to operate.

Jackie, we had a small group years back that I called the Lumix Loonies.   We had various models.  I know there are many fine brands but am sold on Panasonic.

Amy, Golden Girl like most will find a position that works, cute photo.  Giving you a link, a long one but it shows a Solvit Dog Ramp I used for several years with Jessie, they only way I was able to get her in the suv.  Really impressed with the way it would close and store.

Patricia beautiful photos but agree they give me the shivers.

Shirley I mentioned I have the iPhone 5 and real pleased with it.

Jack, that ramp is good to have to enable pets to get to higher ground.  The cat who lives here doesn't need anything at present; he's not quite five years old.  If he needed anything, I would not be able to lift him anyway.

Yes, Patricia, I've seen many trees with ice and/or heavy snow on them,  I remember working during an ice storm where we had to get crews from other electric utilities to help us.  Those are beautiful pictures, regardless.

Jackie, birch are rather fragile trees anyway, but they are very pretty trees.

Mary Ann

Amy

Jack ,thank you, I will look into those the next time I get to the city.

Patricia, beautiful photos. We have had ice storms in the past that have knocked power out for weeks  to some people . A lot of folks invested in generators after that one. Some trees do recover from the weight of the ice but others are permanently bent now.

Mary Ann, I find the weeping birch especially pretty.

Jack, if that ramp was 24" wide instead of 20" it would be perfect for the wheelchair to access places with 2/3 steps entrances.

Patricia, beautiful photos, but now I need a hot coffee to feel warm again! I liked the photos better without "fake" sun. :)

Shirley the robin is amazing in all its sharp details.

Golden Girl looks very relaxed like that :)  When his sight was failing, my old dog liked to sleep close to a wal or next to a heavy furniture.  I suppose it gave him a sense of security.

jackwv

Bubble the instructions made it clear it was not for people (probably wanted to avoid law suits)  I have seen ramps for wheelchairs.

Here is a photo of my sweet Jessie, she was 15 years old and still wanted her daily walk.  I took a print from a video I had of her walking down the ramp.

Ramps for wheelchairs are very cumbersome. I suppose they are more sturdy that is why.

FlaJean

Enjoyed the photos of the Goldens, Jack & Amy.

Angel, I wouldn't want to be out in that weather, but I love those winter scenes.  I remember years ago in Virginia that we had a bad ice storm in nearby Williamsburg.  The pictures in the newspaper were amazing but I don't think the beauty was appreciated at the time.

We have missed seeing the birds fly in and out so much that Larry has installed a couple of bird feeders.  We are enjoying the birds once again.  I know there is a forum for wild birds but don't think anyone checks it out anymore so am posting the bird here.

I've searched the bird book and believe this is a migrant bird for us in Florida called a Blackpoll Warbler.  It looks like the winter bird coloring.

Amy

Jack, what a beautiful girl!!! Jessie has such a sweet face. That would definitely work for getting in and out of the vehicle.

This little furry creature watched Larry install the bird feeders.  Larry greased the poles so the squirrels couldn't climb up but this fellow managed to jump from the bird bath.  So Larry had to move the bird bath.  Now he and his friend are feeding seeds on the ground.

Amy

FlaJean, that is a great close up photo!!! I enjoy feeding and watching the birds here. I just put out seed that my cockatiel didn't eat as I sure the wild birds will clean it up along with their bird seed.

FlaJean those little fellows Red squirrels are very clever!! You should see the stack/pile of pine cones they have tucked away in our wood pile. They are workers for sure but really tease both these dogs.

If you have not been there, then you missed the wonderful photos that Chocky adds there.

Bubble, here is a picture I took this AM while it was snowing.  We were suppose to have and inch, and this is what we got. Squirrel is upper limb.  Note the snow on the roof of the bird house.

Good morning.

Bubble, fake sun or do you mean the weak sun coming over the foothills into our cleft valley? We hardly noticed it either...

Jack, Jessie always seemed so good natured and sweet!

Jean that was a great closeup! Here on an upper floor, you see them running back and forth on the wires between the poles. They prefer the spruce and fir trees over the birch. They usually show up again mid-March.

Gloria that is also a brrrr.... photo, loved your birdhouses and that "flamingo" must be freezing!  ;)

Thank you, Jackie, Amy, Jack, Shirley, and MaryAnn for the comments!

There is a Wildlife site in Photos altho as of now, Chocky remains the main contributor.

Gloria de, Nice on the photo but I am glad I am not there :)  Poor squirrel...

Mary Ann

Jean, that bird looks a lot like our goldfinch in winter coloring.  In summer they are bright yellow.  I didn't check to make sure which of us is right, just going from memory.  I'm glad to see you now have a bird feeder because you always had such interesting pictures in Ocala.

Mary Ann

Bubble, thanks for posting.  the squirrel just blended in the the tree. Our less then 1 inch, became 8, with schools closing. The west end and NYC, hardly got any snow, and we in Suffolk county got a blast.

Amy thanks, all 4 of my goldens have been sweet girls.

Gloria you can keep the snow, we just had a dusting, and I have not been out. Nursing a cold and do nothing but sleep. Love to see new fallen snow like in yours and Patricia's photos.

Jean wonderful photos of the bird and squirrel, good to see Larry is back in business, know your had numerous visitors at your previous home.

Here is a photo, not taken by me, that shows the area to the left of the city's outskirts. I'm posting it because it shows the first ring of the three sets of foothills surrounding our city.
