So let me add my approval to the rest... you did good, Janie, passing those cutie pie features right on down.  Cindy looks like she is right at home showing off that baby, but Jim not so sure they don't break that tiny.  Love all the photos & please thank "the kids" for sharing with all of us.  You got a winner, for sure!

This week marked the 6th birthday of Aviv who has done me the great honour of designating me as "sabba"--his grandfather. I was privileged to be allowed to be part of the celebration at his school and these pictures show some of the goings-on. First of all is the schoolyard and then  the classroom.

And then came the celebration

At one point the celebrants sit in the middle of the room and are approached by their classmates who ask permission to express their birthday greetings.

Of course pizza and cake were in great abundance

Great pictures,  Don.  I know you were so proud to be  Aviv's  "sabba" and join in the celebration.     Looks like it was a fun time for everyone.

Happy Birthday to Aviv !

Happy Birthday to Aviv!  And thanks for sharing your honor with all of us, DON!

SHIRLEY, you picked out exactly the same things on the pics that I did.  Jim looks a bit wary but proud.  Cindy is just delighted to be a grandmother.

DON, I have a good friend here at my church who actually looks a lot like you.  And he has the honor of playing ST NICHOLAS for the children on St. Nicholas day.  They leave their shoes in the back of the church and they get oranges and apples and St. Nicholas comes in robed and carrying his staff and tells them the story of his visits and why he does it.  I told him about you and when I mentioned your radio show, he said, "I think I know of him!"  We were interrupted at this point and I must get back to him and pursue that subject.

DON, I've always thought of the St. Nicholas thing as a German tradition.  I bet if I get a chance, Chuck knows.  He's our St. Nick.  The kids love it and I know of several Episcopal churches that do this yearly.  I love being there and watching the children absorb what he says and does.  Chuck is a lot like you, I think.  He really gets into the act!

Jane, new babies, are always beautiful, a sign that life does indeed go on. I know you will love seeing and holding her on your trip!

Don, I can not believe Aviv is now six! He is so serious looking and sounds a right proper one as my grandma would say. What a great classroom party

I Googled St. Nick's tradition which is all over Western Europe and believed to have originated in either Spain or Belgium.

INTERESTING!  I googled it too and my version said it began in Germany and Poland!  It also said that there are many versions of where and how it started.

Since I had a gr-father that was half French & half German.... and it was the German side that came up with St.Nick tradition, we all figured that was where it started.  On St.Nick's Day  (either the night before or night of, at the convenience of parents) we would write our letters to Santa Clause and St.Nick would whizz by & pick them up to deliver to Santa (convenient, huh?)  We put the letters in the biggest sock we each owned and it was filled with an orange or apple, few nuts and a small toy (like jacks or deck of Old Maid cards, etc....  as well as what used to be "penny candy".  My mother delighted in making us happy, her mother died when she was 7 so she thought it her job to make us "joyful".... It didn't matter that St.Nick didn't visit everyone, we were just grateful he visited us!

Love the photos of Aviv's party (Happy Birthday, Aviv! from your old Auntie Shirley in Kansas)...   Sabbas wear smiles all day, right, Don?

Patricia, my father's ancestors came basically from France (Englishman in there & one with Lebanese DNA that we aren't sure where he came from or who he was ... my brother's DNA results).  Some of the French on Dad's side were from the Prussa area,  they came to the US through New Orleans.  The French on my mother's side came through Canada.  We just claim to be "the best from all areas" and smile about how well mixed we are!

We broke cold records last night but warming up nice today... and wind is down!!  Tomorrow to be in the 80s so you can imagine how confused our blood flow is, swinging from thick to thin & back again in one day~~  Enough to give a lady a headache!

Haha, Jane, so here is MY version!
:crazy2:

Cold, wet and windy here.  Had over 2 inches of rain.  Not raining now but cloudy.  Met my son this afternoon for a few beer, went home and Mimi insisted in a walk.  Went to the park, 48 degrees, wet and windy.   Just took a short walk, good to be home.   The tulips do not seem to mind, they are coming along.

...they sure go to the effort of making your park look pretty and inviting...I too, would love to see those tulips when in full bloom...
...as for your Mimi, our dogs still like their walks, no matter what our weathers be...besides our dogs need those outside scents to sniff, that's what they look forwards to the most...seeing and smelling where the other dogs have been before them, then they can mark their trail as well.... ;)

Wow Jack, I never saw so many tulips together - what a feast to the eye.  I look forward to more photos.

Thanks for the wishes old Auntie Shirley in Kansas!!!

In Congo we too had the visit of St Nicolas on the 6th of December.  He was even parading in town with his big staff and  his miter on the head, and long red dress.  What a sight that was, with children following him around.

Looked out the window this morning it is 31 degrees and light snow.   That will not stop my daily walk but wanted to get some yard work done.

I will take more photos of the tulips as they develop.   Some of the flower beds still have to be planted.

Israel marks its Memorial Day commemorating the battles that that have been fought, including the 1948 War Of Independence in which the Israelis fought and defeated the combined armies of Egypt, Jordan and Syria. The names and pictures of all those who fought and died in this conflict, including the civilians killed by the Arabs have been broadcast all day on tv and this is a screen shot of one of them

Love the winter snow photos but glad I can just enjoy them and don’t have to worry about driving in those winter conditions anymore.

Jack, I know you hate winter.  It will soon warm up for you.  I’m wondering if many of you will go from winter to summer and skip spring this year. ☹️

Jean, that is what I am afraid will happen.   Mother Nature just can't get her act together.

It is still so cold again today.  We are having snow flurries right now.  It won't amount to anything, but still don't want it.  Still in the upper 30's and not supposed to get much higher.   From the weather right now at noon, it  looks like Jack is getting some snow, also.

I just feel like hibernating until the 4th of July.  LOL   Just makes me feel so depressed.  All I want to do is go back to bed and sleep.

What a variety of photos this morning, for sure something happy and sad to mull over. The mind can switch gears very fast as we scroll down in here.

Love the snow, Amy & Astro.... have not seen any this winter, one time a dusting but nothing to shovel or moisten the ground.  When the robins arrive before bugs & worms, I started cooking "scrambled" hamburger to put out along with a scrambled egg & some bites of bread.... they found it & loved it.  I continued fixing it when one robin adopted us & built her nests within sight of our garage door.  For 8 years she stayed near enough to the house to watch for food & would join us when ever we were out.  I really hoped for snow this winter so thanks for sharing yours.

Jack, hard to imagine those tulips blooming already but guess it is time (even if Mother Nature has a nasty sense of humor this year).  Hope you don't get the hard freeze we had this week.... my jonquils turned brown one night, totally froze the blossoms on the Cleveland pear trees & not sure what it will do with the rest of the greenery.  The forsythia had just opened and blooms were crispy the next morning.  Would be such a shame if the cold moves in on those tulips!  I expect the fruit trees will be damaged as well.  Glad Millie talked you into a walk.

Don, my heart breaks at the thought of so many lives lost fighting over what should be "sacred" ground to the world.  Seems every time leaders think they have a solution it only causes more conflict and more damage to the landmarks that should be revered. You have no idea how much I appreciate what you & Bubble show us, of our own history, not a fairy tale but the actual land where religions began.... and you are there..........what an honor!

Got to tell y'all about my daughter & son's cracks going back & forth about helping Mom get the pool ready for summer.  Before the first hard freeze we drain the pool water down below the lowest pipes, disconnect the pump & all.  We have lived in this house 30 years & have tried everything possible to keep a pool cover down.  Normally sand filled tubes of plastic hold a cover down, not with this wind.  One year my husband even used wire in the grommets & screwed into the seam of the concrete... every few feet all the way around... same result, wind flipped the canvas up & down & dumped the icky dirt & leaves into the water below.  To install one of those roller covers means giving up both ends of the pool for the mechanism, not an option with a deck on one end & fence on the other.  When daughter offered to help the son that has been doing the deed since my husband died, started teasing her to "think of that pool as one big poopy diaper".... she is already looking for excuses to not show up!  She is about 5 years older but all their lives he has teased her to tears....  he worships the ground she walks on, but they continue to try to "one-up" each other.  Once this job is done it is a piece of cake to keep it looking nice all summer.  Everyone thinks it awful I'm not having it open for swimming all the time but I explain that "they don't go rolling in the flower beds just because they look nice so why mess up the pool for me to have to clean constantly?"  The body lotions & sun screens used kill the chemicals & it takes constant work to keep the water sparkling like it does when nobody swims.  Anyway, I love being on the river enough to put up with the pool, quite a few of the houses around have added pools since we bought this place so must be a market for them, even if I have to gripe every spring!  My life.....

Have a beautiful day, where ever you are.  Thanks for the photos & thank you, Bubble for posting them!

Sorry about sending these cold temps on to you, Joy... we broke old records.  Jean, you have found a beautiful spot for sure, but "all my children", grands & gr-grands are here.  10-20 years younger I would love to just take off in the motorhome, drag along either a car or my little Yamaha & enjoy the USA in my Ford (sorry, Chevy).

Jean, what a beautiful color.  I think I had only seen colors in the pink to red family.

I'll have to tell you my experience.  We always had a hibiscus at home, so when I moved here, I bought one - a deep rose color.  One year I left for somewhere and the plant had several buds on it.  When I got back the top of my plant had been whacked off and there were no buds.  I found one of the residents had volunteered to trim the shrubbery so he trimmed my hibiscus.  When I saw him, I told him if he didn't know what he was doing, he shouldn't do it!.  In the location I had it, the plant did not blossom (not enough sun) so my neighbor moved it to our storage building where it blossomed for several years until the condo removed it to put in some rose bushes.  I had no say over what happened but I was most mad about the resident volunteer who didn't know what he was doing!  He did something else that was dumb, but I won't go into that.  Besides, he's dead and could not defend himself!

Anyway, your hibiscus is a beautiful shade of yellow and I like it.

FlaJoan, superb hibiscus.  it looks so velvety.
In Africa, hibiscus were used as edges  for the yards. But they were always red.
