Hi Everyone - I received a message tonight from Pat Scott Halbach. She is going in for hip surgery at 8:00 in the morning. She asked that I let everyone know. She would appreciate prayers and good wishes for her surgery and recovery. She had planned on the hip surgery at a  later date, but apparently they had an opening so this was a bit of a shock and surprise.

I'm looking forward to seeing more posts in this discussion. I haven't been posting (or reading) many of the folders for awhile for various reasons, and I miss them.

Callie - Your gripe about using the word loose in place of lose caught my attention! That's one of my biggest gripes and seems to be used more and more frequently.

Newspapers no longer have proofreaders and the spelling on social media is horrendous! It appears that schools don't stress grammar or sentence structure anymore.

Another thing that concerns me is the trend toward not teaching cursive handwriting in schools. Fortunately, my great-grands attend a school where it's still taught and my 11 yr. old great-granddaughter shows promise of being good at it.

I am so sorry to hear of Hal Kelley's passing. I will miss him!

Just reading through the messages and saw the discussion about the scam.

Mary Ann - Your instinct was right on! DO NOT click on anything in the box that comes up and absolutely don't call the number. We were getting that fairly often and about the only way I could get rid of it was alt/control/delete and then shut down for about 10 minutes. My brother (who is very computer un-savvy) called the number and ran into all kinds of trouble. Everything on his computer was blocked to him including his e-mail and they were asking for money! He lives in Vermont so we couldn't help him but a friend of his came to the rescue. They make it look like it's something official from Microsoft.

The dinner we had at a restaurant on Thanksgiving cost $70 for two, not including appetizers or drinks. Marilyne, I don't know why but it seems to be a trend to serve green beans nearly raw! Broccoli, too. The best part of the dinner was the cheesecake! We really like the turkey dinner they serve at the Cracker Barrel. Ordering the Thanksgiving dinner from there sounds like a great idea.

Cute story........My aunt used to have them box her vegetables and cook them at home to her satisfaction.  She was a very good cook and could never understand why they served veggies "raw".

Received a nice surprise today..........a real evergreen centerpiece with a candle (the everlasting one) from L.L. Bean sent by our oldest daughter.  She also called to say they hope to be here for Christmas.

Good night all. I have bocce-golf in the morning.

We had a quiet day here. This evening we went out to dinner with three friends. Had a lovely dinner topped off with  delicious cheesecake. Our friend, Jim, had to work today so our dinner reservation was at 7:30. Jim works for the Neighborhood Watch here in The Villages.

I talked to several children and grandchildren on the phone. Yesterday our oldest daughter, Donna, called to tell me our great-grandson, Trevor, got his driver's permit. How did he get to be 15 so soon???  :o

It rained all day. At times it was a downpour. We really needed the rain so I'm not complaining.

Jeanne Lee - Sorry to hear you've been in the hospital but glad to hear you are home and on the mend.

Chape is watching the New York Giants football game. Score at the moment is tied, 3-3.

Good night all.

Angelface - You need to have some sort of antenna or cable that brings the signal to your TV. Talk to your building manager about what to do. They may have cable access for the apartments.

edit: If there's a TV station in your city, you may be able to have some sort of small antenna arrangement (like rabbit ears.)

Sato - It's good to see you posting photos again!

Your first photo could be a Rose of Sharon bloom. It's in the hibiscus family and the only hibiscus that survives in the north, where I came from. The hibiscus here in Florida are only found as potted plants up north.

Sandy - Fe is really growing up. So cute!

I've really enjoyed all the recent pictures and will try to be a more frequent visitor!

Have to admit it couldn't have been very comfortable!  :) We had recently moved from Vermont to New Jersey and temporarily rented a small 2 bedroom upstairs apartment.  It's amazing how far computers and other forms of technology have come.

Jack - I was afraid I would break something if I touched the wrong thing.  :)

The talk in Norm's Bait and Tackle the last couple of days has been computers. This is an old snapshot of my husband's first PC, a Commodore PET in 1978

Not sure how he managed to use it from his recliner (which didn't revolve)!  :)

Life is finally back to normal here. I've been trying to keep up with all the posts but not in a very talkative mood.

Interesting talk about our early computers. When we were living in Oklahoma and my husband was traveling so much, he finally talked me into trying the internet (approx 1995). Once I found SeniorNet (by accident) I was turned into a computer junkie!  :) Tried my hand at simple HTML and loved the MSN chat. Nearly every night Mary de Boer (from New Zealand) and I would have long chats.  Imagine how exciting it was to meet her years later at one of the SN Bashes! It took a lot of patience to stay with the internet between the dial-up modem and being kicked off periodically with AOL's cheery "Good-Bye!).

My husband's first PC was a Commodore PET in 1978. I have a snapshot of it that I'll post in Photos.

Yesterday afternoon our group played golf. We almost always play early but couldn't get a morning tee time........Something I won't do again! I felt sick when I got home.  Not all of the courses are open yet. Some of them had a lot of flooding with Irma. We should be cooling down soon. October and November are usually some of our nicest months.

The house washer is coming this afternoon. It really needs it. We had a wet summer and the north side of the house is developing mold. Guess I should go outside and move some plants before he gets here.

Mary Ann - Please DO NOT use the stainless steel cleaner for pots and pans on the dishwasher door. It's abrasive. We had to get a new dishwasher recently and our only choice was stainless steel. Our other appliances are bisque, which is no longer available. I love how quiet our new one is.

Thank you for the recipe.

Got up this morning to find that everyone had their trash and recyclables out for pick-up so I was able to put my "contribution" out.  :)  The announcement must have been in yesterday's paper. The usual day for both is Monday.

Larry - They used to have an Orange Julius place in one of the malls in Burlington, VT. I really liked them but haven't found them anywhere since. Glad the storm has passed by you. My cousin, who lives near you, has a lot of trees so I hope his home is okay. I'll be calling him today.

Mary Ann - The pineapple slice added a touch of tartness to the English muffin tuna melt, which I liked. I'd also like the recipe you mentioned.

Shirley N. commented on one of my Facebook posts today indicating she was okay and also had no damage. It's possible she's without power now, as much of Florida is.

My niece in Daytona Beach has a big mess to clean up. Their house has two floors and the lower floor was flooded with 2 ft. of water. She posted videos on Facebook.  :(

Chape's youngest sister lives near Tampa and evacuated to Atlanta. They were in Vermont while we were there but flew home to secure their place. They're returning tomorrow.  She's been told her house is fine with no water or wind damage. We were really worried because the hurricane hit hard on the west coast.  Everyone I know in Florida is safe and that's what is important!

FlaJean - Glad to hear you weren't affected by the storm.

Johann - I hope your daughter is safe and dry tonight.

Larry - Hoping the the remnants of Irma missed you!

Mary Ann - All the talk about tuna melts makes me hungry. There was a restaurant in Vermont where they made a version of a tuna melt that I loved.  It was made with an English muffin and tuna salad, a pineapple slice, and topped with Swiss cheese. I've made them at home also.

We (especially Chape) were exhausted today. We made the drive home staying only two nights and Chape did 99% of the driving. The first day was through heavy rain. Since we got home we've been running on adrenaline but today we could relax.

Chape has been in bed for an hour and I'll be turning in soon. Good night all.

All is well here! We were spared any damage to the house and very little in the yard. I have a niece in Daytona Beach and a long time friend in Jacksonville, both bad places to be with this hurricane. They are okay but clean-up will be difficult.

Larry - No, we don't have the storm shutters. They don't seem to be common this far inland.

Waiting for the hurricane to reach us and hoping and praying for the best. It's supposed to reach our area by 5 a.m.  Lots of tornado warnings are all over the state. It's been raining here for hours.

We arrived home Wednesday night.  Could have (should have?) stayed in Vermont till it was over but there were some important things to take care of here. On the way down,  I-95 had cars going north as far as the eye could see. All our neighbors are staying here as well. We should be fine according to the predictions.

I now have a toad in the house!  :) He must have come in while we had the door to the garage open. I tried to catch him but he got away and now I can't find him.

I'm hoping Shirley and Danny went to a shelter.  The storm changed direction and their area could get hit hard.

I know FlaJean lives near the water so praying she'll be okay.

If we lose power I'll try to check in with Chape's smartphone.

Good evening from Vermont! We left home on the 15th and it's been quiite a trip. Wev'e managed to fit a lot into the past two weeks. One of the highlights was a short stop to see Larry and Pat Hanna. Such a nice couple. I wish we' d had a little more time  to visit but the long trip loomed ahead of us. The night before we had stayed with my cousin in North Augusta, S. C.   Still have several more people to visit before leaving the middle of the week. It's been unseasonably cold here especially at night. This morning it was 39 degrees.  I haven't been posting because I have my tablet and using this keyboard is work! Wishing you all a good Labor Day week-end.

Hoping all of you still remember me! It's been a long time since I last posted.

I wonder if any of you have been hit by that scam where a page comes up saying it's Microsoft,  and says you have a serious problem and completely freezes up your computer. They give you a phone number to call, DON'T DO IT! I have a neighbor friend who did and now they are insisting that she pay them $150 for fixing it. My brother clicked on their link and ended up losing his internet and e-mail! Neither of them are very computer savvy. Both Chape and I have had it several times but recognized it as a scam.  Our solution is the 3 finger reset (alt, control, delete), highlight your browser when the box comes up and click on "end task", then shut your computer off the normal way. Wait for about 15 min. before turning it back on. It  happened to me again last night.

We are driving to Vermont to spend a couple of weeks with family. Leaving Tuesday morning. Our oldest daughter has planned a reunion including both sides of the family and extended family.  Hoping for good weather as it will be a barbecue at her house. She lives in the country with plenty of space so should be fun. Lots of room for the younger ones to run and play.

Larry - We will be spending Tuesday night at my cousin's home in North Augusta. Is there any chance you would be available for a short visit on Wednesday?

Mary Ann - So glad to hear that Kendrick returned!  My beloved cat, Calei, disappeared when we lived in Oklahoma but never did return. Still miss him! We looked everywhere. He was an indoor cat but also spent time outside. I went to neighboring houses and at one place when I described him the woman said "Oh, you mean Sunshine"! He used to visit their house afternoons, where her two little girls played with him and fed him! He was leading a double life.  :)

Hope you are all having a good summer.

Hope you all had a good day! We went to a 4th of July party at a friend's........Several of us went for a dip in their pool. The water was nice, just the way I like it! Lots of good food with pulled pork with all the fixings and fun conversations. Tonight I can hear non-stop fireworks. Makes me glad I don't have a dog. The noise can be so hard on them!

My friend, Dee, lost one of her cats today from congestive heart failure (and he's not an old cat) Sad, as she adopted the brothers together and the other one is already missing him.

Now to go look at Mary Ann's babies!

My thermometer said it was 105 this afternoon. I think it exaggerates sometimes.  :)  I want to get another one that also shows humidity.

My daughter called today to say they are home from their trip. One they will always remember, I'm sure! They were also able to have a short visit with my niece in Frisco, CO and SIL's niece in the same area.

Carol -  They traveled to some point that was nearly 12,000 ft. elevation, according to the sign, and also through some passes that would make me nervous.  I've never been to that part of the country but I can visit it through their pictures! (Sorry about that crown!)

Marilyne - I've read that people in other countries don't understand our need for A/C. I wouldn't want to live here in Florida without it!

Mary Ann - You made Kendrick's day!  ;)

Mary Ann - Like you, I don't post pictures that are unflattering of anyone. I wouldn't want them to do that to me!

Very warm out today and as usual is supposed to rain later today. Lots of sunshine since this morning, though.

Still hobbling around with my back/hip. Hope this changes soon.  Our youngest daughter is flying down late Sunday night to spend a couple of days with us. I am really looking forward to it. Seldom have a chance for one-on-one time with her.

Larry - Thanks. I've had small problems from time to time but never anything like this!

Mary Ann - I'm so sorry you've lost your friend. So nice you were able to see her sister and daughter. It's a sad fact of life for us. I graduated high school in a class of 25. 18 of them were girls and we had all known each other most of our lives.. There are now only 9 of us left and my best friend is the one with Alzheimers.  I'll have to go find the three generation pictures of the twins.

Shirleyn - We may be feeling the heat here, but thank goodness we're not in Arizona! I have two cousins near Phoenix. The temp there today was 119. Sorry about the problems with your teeth. That's no fun! Chape has some serious dental surgery the end of this month and he's dreading it.

Joan - I saw Dan's graduation pictures on Facebook. Very nice!

If anyone here lives in the Louisiana/Alabama area, stay safe. That tropical storm is due to hit the area tonight. From what I've seen flooding will be a problem.

I've been nursing a back problem the last few days. Lot of pain and could barely walk at times but I think it's getting better. I did a lot of lifting etc. and should have known better.

My daughter and her family are still traveling. Today they posted pictures of the Arches National Park. They plan to get home on the 25th.

Good evening all.

As Joan Lavelle (Biscuit) used to say on SeniorNet, I had my hair kinked this afternoon.  :) I can usually go 4 or 5 months between perms but this last one fizzled out in less than 3 months. I have thin, very fine hair and the perm makes it easier to deal with.

We had a lot of storm clouds but nothing developed. Rain is in the forecast for tomorrow. Hope they mow our lawn soon. With all the rain lately it's getting very long.

My family made it to Mt. Rushmore today and took some more beautiful photos. My daughter and SIL bought a new 50x zoom camera before they left. 14 yr. old great grandson, Trevor, is also posting pictures, probably taken with his cell phone. He has used the word "awesome" several times to describe the views.  :) When my daughter first told me about her plans for taking this family vacation, I said that I hoped they still liked each other when they got home.  :D

Mary Ann - I think Kendrick is good company.  Long ago I decided that if I am ever alone, I will have a little dog I can take anywhere and doesn't require a lot of walking. I haven't lived alone since we were married just before my 19th birthday, though Chape did travel quite a bit for his job. That's pretty much a whole lifetime!

Larry - Bocce-golf is played on a bocce court with a putter and golf balls. The object of the game is the same......the winners are the team who gets the most golf balls nearest to the pallino  (ball). Hard to understand how they sent the shirts to your old address. Have you ordered from Costco since you moved?

Marilyne - I know what you mean about bad/sad news. Years ago when things happened you only heard about it on the 5 o'clock and late night news and then you seldom saw graphic pictures. Sometimes it's good to just turn off the TV.

Jeanne Lee - I don't even want to know all that happened with that fire. What a horrific thing! I fear fires and know I wouldn't want to live in a high-rise. Haven't "spoken" to you in awhile. How have you been?

Town Talk / Re: Norms Bait and Tackle
« on: June 13, 2017, 11:32:49 PM »
Mary Ann - I came in here to read today's posts and saw your wish, so here I am!  :)

I played bocce-golf this morning and lost! Next week we start again with regular bocce. I'm much better at that and also like it better.

Tonight we went to the monthly pot-luck. They usually don't have them in the summer but decided it's a good way for everyone to get together and stay in touch. We have two new couples on our street I haven't met yet. Will meet one of them at a "meet and greet" at one of the neighbors on Thursday.

Larry - I never leave the house unlocked, even for a short errand. And our garage door stays closed! There have been burglaries in the past but none near us. If the door is unlocked I am home.....of course that's no guarantee someone won't break in!   :o

Just saw the news about the apartment high rise in England that's on fire. Praying for them...... Not a good thing to see before I go to bed.

On a happier note, our oldest daughter and her husband are on a road trip with her daughter, son-in-law and two grandsons. The boys are 14 and 8.  Their  first stop was Niagara Falls and today they were at the Badlands National Park in South Dakota. Their destination is Yellowstone Natl. Park. I imagine the return trip will be on a more southerly route. They plan to be gone two weeks. I'm keeping track of them on Facebook. They've posted some beautiful pictures.

Good night all.
