I don't get these at all.  Think that my carrier has good filters on them.

Did anyone read about Amazon trying to use Facial Recognition?  How do you feel about it?  I can see it would be great try to catch a terrorist, find a missing person and maybe a few other features.  But..... our privacy keeps dwindling and we wonder what happens to our children and their children.  Am I paranoid?

SCFSue

Rammel, I think those calls are a scam.  I have started deleting every post I get that I don't recognize the individual person and never a business.  I got burned on that a couple of years ago.

These iCard things were telephone calls. None today.  Maybe they got the message.  I'm sure they were SCAM

My email tonight  had a "communication from "Social Security" to which they wanted a reply.  None of the URL's in their email even had a .gov address. But the whole email did look official. - Scam, scam, scam.

"Am I paranoid?"  I don't think so.
I seem to recall some European soccer matches using facial recognition to spot the usual soccer game upstarts. Made it easier to spot and eject them.
So many things, if used properly, are good things. But it seems to be difficult for the powers that be to limit their use to what was intended.

For the phone, I have Caller ID and if I don't recognize the name or number, I don't answer.  Almost none of those leave a message and they're easily erased.
Some of the e-mail goes directly into Scam.  I do check to see the address on the e-mail but do delete it.
For the few that make it to my regular e-mail, again, I check to see the address.  Almost always the complete address has nothing to do with the subject matter.

How stupid do people think we are?

MaryAnn, going by the spam I see on my email spam filter, that's a surely a rhetorical question?

I have Gmail's spam filter as well as my antivirus's email filter and still one or two slips through. But the practice of showing the subject line makes it easy to send it back to spam.

I also use a VPN or virtual private network provided by my antivirus that allows my internet browsing to be untraceable.

A first for me today: a call with an Asian accent (Indian? Pakistani?) which I answered as usual in Hebrew.  He asked if I spoke English and at my answering 'yes', started to tell me something was wrong with my computer!
I promptly interrupted with "thanks" and cut off the call.
They even get to Israel now? lol

SCFSue

I always check my phone which shows incoming telephone numbers.  If I don't recognize the 3 digit area code, I just don't answer it!  The only long distance calls I answer are from either of my sisters or my sons families who don't live in Alabama.

Sue

Mary Ann

Bubble, from what I understand is that you now have to be careful in answering any question with "yes" because that seems to give the caller information about your credit card or account and they use it to make large purchases.  I am sure you have read about that.  If you don't have Caller ID, I'd get it.  My cost is $10 a month and well worth it but I don't know about costs in other areas.  I hope you've heard the last of it.  But beware!

Good afternoon, Beautiful day, been setting out side reading the paper and having my coffee,

Mary Ann, I have head about saying yes on the phone to a simple question.  I have caller ID on TV and phone. If someone knows me they will say pick up, Gloria and give there name.

Bubble, now that is a smart way to answer the phone :)

Bubble, I get that call on a fairly regular (but spaced out) basis. To me it always sounds like the same person and he always tries to imply he is calling from MicroSoft. When you state that MS doesn't call people he starts to "sing and dance". I have thanked him and said that I already took my computer in.  Other times I say I don't have a computer, or just hang up.

My wife gets mad that I even answer. But if I don't and they leave a message it is heard on the other extensions.

I only hope it is a lone occurrence. I get plenty of local calls asking money for odd charities. mostly at meals time or late at night. :(  Usually recordings.

Carol

Rammel:  Thank you for mentioning I am not paranoid.  We have ALEXA and use it often mostly to bring special music into the house.  Our daughter is suspicious of ALEXA and in her line of work for a tech company from home - she won't have it in the their house.  We have nothing to hide - or, at least we think that way today.

Bubble:  As fast as anything is invented, all over the world the lazy crooks want our money and information so they can sell it off.  I am glad to read that Radioman Don is recuperating - I will check in on another site.

For any phone call, I ask right up front - Who is calling, please?.  We have friends and relatives all over plus Don has the VA call and that can be a recording, so many things.

Gloria de:  You may be a bit shorter but your mind and soul are in fine shape.  Hugs

I am pretty sure that our Military Intelligence could clear up everything for us as to snooping on our information - because of our freedoms, this will never take place in our time.  As for email trash - I check several daily for SPAM and that will alert the server to look into the issue.  At least, I hope they keep up with SPAM.

BIG GRIPE today

Our refrigerator conked out.  Thought it was iced up due to high humidity and being opened up too much. Had it apart, cleaned it, and replaced the fan and thought it was OK -------- BUT-------Today it was getting warm again and the ice cream was soft.

Ordered a new one and that will take a week for delivery. So will live out of Styrofoam boxes

My Gripe We have an older house and the doorways are narrow. In order to get the old Refer out and a new one in I have to take apart the kitchen door jamb.  Seems I'm not as young as I used to be  :'(  Twelve years ago when we redid the kitchen it seemed easy. ----- Now, NOT SO MUCH

Had that problem with narrow door here too. We unscrewed the fridge door because opening it flat did not help in turning it in. That was not too hard.

angelface555

Guys, there a lot more brass and rust in those old so-called golden years! Who knew in just four years that I could manage to only deep clean one side of the kitchen, rest the next day and on the third day, deep clean the other half?

I used to manage apartments back years ago and could clean a one bedroom in a half hour and a two or three bedroom in an hour. I  ran miles around the cleaning staff and assistant managers. Now it takes five to six hours to do a weekly clean in my apartment with more than one rest period and do laundry! :(

RAMMEL

Pat,
When you had that apartment cleaning job you weren't one of those that only had ONE rag for all jobs, were you?   :tickedoff:

It always bugged me when they came in and did the bathroom, then wiped the phone and the "sanitized" glasses (wrapped in special paper to prove their condition).

Rick, I was an apartment manager for two hundred apartments in three complexes plus a walk in condo in Wasilla and a three bedroom apartment in the Alyeska Ski Resort, while the owners lived in Germany. My ex-husband, co-manager; did all maintenance while we had a six-person cleaning staff and a married couple who were assistant managers.

There was no wrapping anything in paper, and we didn't have the time or energy to do make arounds. We were the sandwich between the owners and the renters, not a comfortable place to be and we lasted six years when the average was three. Many of the apartments were rented in blocks by companies, (This was in the pipeline era.). Alaska Airlines rented six apartments in Anchorage for their staff layovers.

Carol

Pat:  How can I complain about housework after your description?  I can truly see that it is tough work - even what I have done over the years has seemed to be exhausting some days.  It never was day after day though.  I hope you have some help - any little help is welcome at times.

My gripe:  Driving in the city of Denver --- it is clogged and there seems to always be someone whipping through & changing lanes thinking they will get there faster.  Must always get ahead of the vehicle in front - just to stop at the next red light.  Don't forget - lights turning red mean speed up and race through it.  Housing is totally out of control - we could sell our place in ten minutes but "where would we go"?  Should I tell them that those cute Prairie Dogs carry the Bubonic Plague?  That is true!

angelface555

Carol, we have several local military bases, and it was in the paper a few years back that driving here was the same proportionally as Los Angeles, so I understand. I have relatives on the other side, long time farmers from Grand Junction, Ouray, and Colorado Springs so I hear about it.

The housecleaning fights with old bones and no natural up and downs anymore. It helps that last year I finally decluttered but my gripe such as it is, revolves around shopping is no longer an enjoyable past time. I used to enjoy an afternoon or morning out with friends followed by lunch but now no one shops, we donate.

Carol

Pat:  If your relatives are still farming, bless them!  It is so dry everywhere - a disaster.  I cannot remember how many states get water from the Colorado river - it is not producing enough for everyone.

I guess my gripe would be - people should stop building pools in their yards, stop growing the green grass that needs so much moisture, etc.  My biggest gripe is:  developers still grading everything to to build homes and then the entrance has a "water feature".

Another gripe while I am at it:  the city crooks (politicians) pushing for winter Olympics when we are in a huge downturn in the snowfall area.

angelface555

Carol, my relatives, moved from Salinas, Kansas in the twenties and thirties to Colorado and a few to Northern California. My other relatives farmed in Joplin, Missouri and the surrounding areas on my paternal side.
I'm not sure how many of the generation after mine still farm. I do know that my mother's uncle never married but became caught up in researching our maternal family"s Irish lineage, pre-computers; back through sixteen hundred in Ireland only to find we were still farming!  :)

Here, everyone wants to live on one of the foothills or by one of the rivers.

Carol

Isn't it interesting on how our ancestors lived and made a living?  Supporting family - and including cousins, nephews and nieces, grandparents in their homes many times.  They lived such kindly lives.

Gripe:  I have to go into my mail and check off the SPAM now - it is about 4 to 6 SPAM daily.  Crum!

CallieOK

I do, too, Carol - and my son told me if I "block sender" or "block sender's domain", I'm just telling them they got a real e-mail address.  So I've just been marking new ones "Junk" and that's where they automatically go when they come through again.

Carol

Callie:   Don't you wish you could send them to jail?

Carol

Good Morning all!  We have moisture in the air but at the cost of mudslides in the steep hills.  It looks like a Seattle sky here this morning but I don't hear the fog horn.

I have been downloading library audio books for years on an old iPod.  Yesterday, the iPod just did not take the newer version from the library.  Another worthless and once expensive electronic device - Don said "That is how Apple makes so much money".  Another Crum Bum experience.  First, the library keeps messing with (changing) their access - it was so easy years ago.  Next, the corporations bring out new versions and make sure the older versions are not compatible.
